Black or white, those living in poverty/ghettos today have so much more than those of the past. There is education available, medical care is assured, food stamps removes the fear of not being able to feed their children, When you have two parties regardless of skin color, same circumstances and background, one makes it and the other is still sitting in the ghetto, blaming everyone else, there is a missing link that no amount of welfare can provide. Motivation/determination. Between my husband and I we see several medical specialists. At least 3/4 of them are minorities. My husband's black oncologist did not get where he is by "looting, burning, and destroying what belongs to another. He is there because of a lot of self sacrifice and grueling hard hours. To many, black or white without family aid pull themselves out of the ghetto. They put the taxpayer support to good use to better themselves. You don't better yourself by destroying and stealing what belongs to others.3 points -

Sounds to me like one disgruntled former Adventist!! Anyone know who wrote this article?? Personally the Sabbath does influence my life!! You know why?? Because the Lord of the Sabbath, Jesus Christ influences my life. I might not do a great job of following that influence, but if I put him at the center of it, than by extension, it most definitely should influence my life.2 points -
Adventists Exclusivness

It seems the SDA beliefs and denomination have little to offer that is good. Interesting that if this said Catholic or Muslim or ?? then the criticism would be that it was anti and we needed to get the beam out of our own eye. Contrary to what the author and the poster would like to imply I am very grateful that I have four sons with four SDA wives. I am pleased that somehow bumbling thru this cruel exclusive club of adventism my boys grew up to be christian SDA husbands and fathers. They never had any problems forming friendships in and outside the church. They have friends that have left the church and they maintained friendships with them. They do not badger them or try to guilt them into returning. They are born in a Seventh Day Adventist hospital to Seventh Day Adventist parents. I cannot think of one friend ,acquaintance or family member that has been born in a adventist hospital. But so what? My granddaughter was born in a Catholic hospital, does that make her a exclusive catholic. They then go to an Adventist preschool and make Adventist-only friends Actually there are very few adventist preschools compared to other private and state run pre-schools. They then head to an Adventist grade school and make Adventist-only friends. Alternatively if they belong to very exclusive parents they are homeschooled, and their only contact with other children is at their church. Maybe other parents feel the need to apologize for sending their children to our schools,I will be eternally grateful that we were able to. Home schooled children do not only have contact with other adventist children. My two grandchildren are homeschooled and most are not SDA. They interact and have many activities together. They even have sleep overs with those "others" They then go to an Adventist high school. Best thing we ever did was to send our boys to an adventist high school. In public school there were activities on fri they could not take part among other things They then go to an Adventist university and college (and while there, most likely study to become either a nurse, a teacher of a pastor). That is so foolish it really doesn't deserve an answer They then get a job in an Adventist business/institution. These are particularly appealing from a practical perspective, because these businesses will forcibly be closed during Sabbath hours (or if they are a hospital, it is OK because they can work during Sabbath). SDA's work in all types of positions. Hardly exclusively Adventist business/institution They will then get married to an Adventist spouse, as an SDA pastor is not allowed to marry an SDA to a non-SDA. I would certainly hope so. I know many don't think the biblical command to not be unequally yoked ,but biblically that still stands. This is really grasping to try to find a negative. With all the family members and church members that I have known over the years that have spent their final years in a nursing home not one so far has done so in an adventist facility "Adventists pastors will marry two non-Adventists, or two Adventists. But they will not mix the two, because it goes against SDA theology to do so. SDA’s are only allowed to marry other SDA’s. This idea is also theologically applied to a lot of other relationships too. It is applied to close friendships, and close business relationships. For a fascinating insight into regular SDA’s discussing the issue of marrying a non-SDA to an SDA, click here. You’ll notice that some say they wouldn’t even attend the wedding of a close family member if it broke the SDA bonds." It is not adventist theology that is against a SDA marrying a non SDA. That comes from a little higher power. "As I have mentioned, Adventists have a lot of rules, many of which greatly impact on the practicalities of their lives. I cannot begin to explain how keeping the Jewish Sabbath greatly influences your week-to-week life. And practically, not drinking an alcohol limits where you can go and it means that Adventists find ways to amuse themselves compared to the rest of the population. They also are encouraged to engage in church activities throughout the daily week, taking up a lot of their free time. So Adventists do a lot of things together, and they have their own jokes, their own favourite activities and know each other in ways that outsiders would never understand." How terrible. I would hope the seventh day Sabbath influences your day to day life. How awful that not drinking limits your drinking activities. Engaging in church activities really has to rank right up there as the cardinal sin2 points -

WORDS of Wisdom from ELLEN WHITE on dealing with Catholics
Kevin H reacted to Stan for a topic
Like others of the mid- 1800 Adventists who came out of Protestant thinking at the time, were very much, "in your face" type of confrontation with Catholic. As Ellen White grew and matured, she counselled going away from that. We used to have a thread on that but I can not find it. Many were disappointed as they viewed slamming Catholics as what they should do. Lets get this going again.. so - - -- -- - - WORDS of Wisdom from ELLEN WHITE on dealing with Catholics.1 point -

Sweden Responds to Murder and Beheading by Banning Knives and Watching for ‘Backlash’ Against Muslims 14Aug, 2015by Warner Todd Huston If this isn’t typical of the idiotic response of left-wingers to the outrage of murderous Islam, nothing is. In Sweden a rampaging Muslim immigrant who was supposed to have been deported stormed into an IKEA furniture store, took some knives from one of the kitchen displays, and murdered two shoppers, beheading one of them. So, what was done about it? The store banned knives and the authorities geared up to prevent “backlash against Muslims.” So, it was the knives’ fault and instead of eyeing Muslims, the authorities put a watch on regular Swedes as the potential danger.1 point -

Sojourner reacted to Gail for a topic
This topic came up today in conversation at work and I mentioned this thread. The cultural phenomenon will occur within any institution (school, jail, hospital, church, office, etc). It was one of the reasons I was glad to be a homeschooling mom. We were not limited in our opportunities to socialise. People will form cliques, or comfort zones, within any such group structure. I have always thought it to be wrong, to keep to ourselves so much. Because I work for the church, I see it all the time. I know people who have no friends outside of their church circle. For myself I would find that stifling, smothering. But the question arises- How can we be salt in the earth, and lights, if we are not among those outside our church sphere?1 point -
Adventist Education

Deaconess: Just wondering what you mean about being worried about where Adventist colleges are headed? There are different directions we can go there. There are those who are against education and want's our colleges to only continue to reteach what some of their favorite theologians taught 100 years ago. My concern is that too many of our schools are focused on topics like Church growth or church history and have gotten away from the Bible. There was a level of Bible study with people like Thiele, Horn, Wood, Heppenstal, Leona Glidden Running etc. that continued into the 1980s but which we have been getting away from. Even the Desmond Ford issue would not have been an issue if people read a book that has probably been in most of our libraries, by Henri Frankfort and others: Before philosophy. http://www.amazon.com/Before-Philosophy-Intellectual-Adventure-Ancient/dp/014020198X I am worried as to how we know the writings of Chuck Swindell, Joel Osteen, and other popular writers (which is not that bad in itself, but who are too superficial) but at the expense of knowing William Foxwell Albright, Carol and Eric Meyers, Yagel Yaden, John Bright, Yohanan Aharoni, Abraham Joshua Heshel etc. who were deep Bible scholars and who can lead us to studying the Bible deeper than we do.1 point -

And you are the only one doing the critical thinking? Can you show one post, especially from mine, where I or anyone has made a statement about one race being inferior or superior to another? And who is not listening? Who is not doing some critical thinking? It wasn't just me who was asking what changes Laz and the protesters/rioters/looters would like to see, but there has been none offered. Laz would rather talk about their feelings, of rage and anger about hopelessness, fear, and depression. If you fall into a latrine, how long are you going to talk about your feelings about the indignity of feeling malodorous and start the critical thinking of getting out of it? If you find that your perspective doesn't seem to be working but the other person's perspective seem to be working well, isn't it time for some critical thinking and try something else? I'm a solution-oriented person. To me, if you want progress, state the problem as clearly as you can, then let's do some critical thinking and find the solution. It doesn't do anyone any good to just keep repeating, "We've got a problem, we've got a problem, we've got a problem!" As for the actual experience of slavery, we all have our own history which are no less relevant than those of have come out of slavery. The question is, do you want to walk forward while looking backwards? Do you want to commemorate the life of a petty thief and a bully instead of someone like George Washington Carver? Idolize rappers with their vile verses or admire the likes of Dr. Carson? Listen to Jackson and Sharpton or listen someone like Barry Black?1 point -

We had two young men that were totally deaf. One lived at home with his parents because he was deaf and it was to hard to live on his own. The other worked another full time job and then the early morning shift. The one constantly complained about the unfairness of life, being deaf there wasn't much chance he could ever really succeed. He lasted about 6 weeks and then he was let go. He blamed being deaf on the termination. The other deaf man worked roughly 18 months saving every dime of his part time job and then began his own landscaping business. He claimed he was far to busy to worry about someone not liking the fact he was deaf1 point -

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/may/19/hired-black-lives-matter-protesters-start-cutthech/#ixzz3acmWpseK For five years I worked with just about every race on the planet. Because of the flexibility it was ideal for entry level, families wanting to supplement their existing income around their other jobs, students etc. It offered excellent opportunity for advancement, classes in the various depts, regular bonus, and additional pay for those wanting to work over and above their 4 hour shift. During that time those singing the "I can't I am discriminated" against, were still singing the same song when I left, just a new verse concerning their plight. Skin color was not the deciding factor in I can. Backgrounds were varied but those that wanted either to advance, work the extra hours for higher pay and wanted the bonuses offered were not in the same place when I left. The I can't crowd had not progressed since their first day, still waiting for someone to pave the way for them. Regardless of skin color, gender,or nationality those that had the motivation and determination succeeded. The worst dressing down of the I can't crowd came from a middle aged black woman who literally clouded up and rained all over a young black man singing the racist blues. Even being a black on black confrontation I am totally amazed she didn't get fired. Everyone within hearing distance more or less froze . He was as shocked when she told him he made her ashamed to be black,in fact she was ashamed to admit they both belonged to the human race. Her life had not been one of privilege, had never taken a dime of welfare, her and her husband always had a job. Might not be the best but they kept at it until they found something better. When I left four years later he was still singing the same some, while the middle aged black woman, without a high school diploma was now head manager of one of the larger depts1 point -

The answers to the questions of Laz seem to demonstrate the above statement. When it comes to issue of racial problems, a pronounced lack of listening. Laz gives some possible reasons and yet persons keep asking why we have the issues of unhappiness and rioting from time to time. Some responses to Laz... >From slavery and it being illegal to teach a slave to read, to free education for everyone, to rioting. I honestly don't know how we made that awful turn.< >My theory is "Victim Mentality". < >accept accountability, and work on improving herself. No one can do it for her.< >So who are they rioting and looting against in Baltimore? And for what reason? < >appalled at the behavior of: Many Blacks in this country and all the rioting, etc, going on. Many men are finding that a woman from another country will make for a much more pleasant relationship.< Is any one listening or doing any critical thinking? So far, not! Many of the same thoughts are expressed about persons on welfare.....victim mentality! How convenient. I will repeat it again, unless you have a history, long history of oppression/ slavery, you can't give flip answers or ones that may be true for others. We need to think outside our little boxes, ask questions, listen to the responses, try to understand what those responses are saying about us as a nation. We don't have to agree with what is happening, but we do need understand that the concerns are real and legitimate to those expressing them. I do not see that happening in many of the posts to this point. Laz is a good sounding board, listen and think about what he is saying/suggesting. He isn't running for any office.1 point -

This story demonstrates what could be just the beginning of government-mandated morality. It is a sad development. Whether or not I agree with the stance Phillips is taking, the fact is that they are taking away his rights to religious freedom. If he's willing to lose business and money because of his religious convictions, so be it. Let gay couples go elsewhere for their cakes. It's not like Phillips bakery was the only game in town. I'm on his side from a religious liberty point of view. His stance on gays is immaterial at this point. His constitutional rights are being violated.1 point -

I have already repeated that most of the major grievances such as citizenship, voting rights, segregated schools, housing, public businesses, miscegnation laws, discrimination in the workplace, designated quotas for minorities, etc. have been addressed, that's why I'm cynical, so what else do you want to change? Or are you just going to play the victim and just continue to say, "You just don't understand?" Yes, I don't understand, that's why I am seeking for answers as to why people continue to riot and loot. You continue to see property burned and looted and people killed, yet you refuse to say what changes you are expecting to be made! Take Baltimore for example. It is 63% Black. The mayor is black. The police is 54% black. I can't find the stats on the racial make-up of the politicians that run the city of Baltimore, but I wouldn't be surprised if the vast majority is not black. The businesses are 35% black. So who are they rioting and looting against in Baltimore? And for what reason? Why do I venture to say that most minorities share my views? Talk to any Korean, Vietnamese, Indian, Filipino, or any Asian immigrant and see how many of them are not confounded and appalIed by the violent protests going on in different parts of the country. Talk to immigrant Carribean blacks and see how they feel. I just read recently that Nigerian immigrants are among the most successful immigrants in the USA no matter who you compare them to, white, brown, yellow, or whatever. Why We have a president whose father was from Kenya. Talk to my brother who worked himself through college, or his wife. He is married to a Virgin Islander who is part black. I'll give you his phone number if you want. You want to explore the emotions that drive rage and anger, and you mention hopelessness. And yet we have illegals by the millions the vast majority of whom do not even speak the language and yet find hope and opportunity in this country.1 point -

None of this makes sense to me. I don't know how much is semantics or not, but I'll ask questions to clarify what's is not making sense to me. First of all, the "weakness of mortality", especially in the context in which you wrote this, looks to mean simply that one dies. We die for various reasons, but what is it in the fact that we are mortal what would cause us to sin? I don't see the connection here. I especially don't see why mortality would make it so we could restrain sin, but not prevent it. What connection is there between mortality and being able to restrain but not prevent sin? Secondly, why wouldn't you be able to sin with a glorified body? Lucifer and 1/3 of the angels were able to do this (or something equivalent, since they wouldn't have had "glorified bodies", per se, but they weren't mortal, and didn't have any of the weaknesses that mortality would bring).1 point -
God will never give you anything you cannot handle?
DreamWeaver reacted to Sojourner for a topic
This is a cut and paste from Church Leaders.com because I do not want to pass it off as my own work, yet the point they drive at is one I agree with also. God will never give you anything you cannot handle. "Why should we stop saying this? Because it’s a lie. … We’ve completely twisted 1 Corinthians 10:13, as this verse is pointing toward temptation, and even then it states God will be there if things get too tough. The reality is that God just might give us things we can’t handle so that we will gaze toward him for the extra help. Mind blowing right? Realize that not everything is going to go the way you plan, think or hope. Sometimes stuff is going to hit the fan, and in order for you to get through it, you are going to NEED to rely on God’s comfort, peace and understanding. We weren’t meant to do life alone.1 point -
