    Adventist Education

I am a strong supporter of Adventist education for at least grades 1-8. I believe more needs to be done to make this affordable and accessible. The schools we have need to be promoted more among our churches and should be involved more with the churches. The facts in the NAD are not pretty. While our denomination is growing in number, the number of children attending our schools is decreasing in number. I have mixed feelings about it once kids get to high school. High school grades are very expensive and undeniably take money away from other ministries. Many churches have been very successful with after-school programs for their high school members. Some evangelical churches even train their high school students to be missionaries. The high school years are a time when many children start questioning authority. While it is good to protect them from the world, the strict rules at Adventist high schools can turn a child's attitude against the church. I have two children and two step children. All four of them are attending a non-denomination Christian school. The grades are 6th, 7th and 9th. I have two 7th graders. I didn't force my 9th grader to go to the school but gave him a choice between public school and this private school. He wanted to get into a charter school for medical careers but it was full so he decided to go to the Christian school.

I really don't care how many "flavors" of adventism there are. What is the biblical flavor? You have given two fairly lengthy posts. Much of what you posted would make the average person's head explode in going to his/her bible for guidance. My dad always cautioned my brothers and I to be wary of two groups. The ultra conservative that expects to slide into heaven on his vegeburger and the liberal who can't lose his salvation now matter how hard he tries and is so open mined his brains would fall out if he bent over. The rules and regulations that the ultra conservative believes will get them eternal life is as dangerous as the liberal that believes loudly proclaiming you love the Lord and that is really all that is required. I am not real sure what a moderate in his religious belief is. To me,religious belief might not hold up when the going gets rough if your belief is only moderate As for marriage it is hard to dispute the following..... Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?” And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.” -Matthew 19:3-6 Jesus is clearly defining marriage as one man,one woman. It doesn't say two men,two women, one man three women or any other "flavor" you wish to throw in there. "From the beginning would clearly cover the OT regardless of how anyone wants to spin Sodom and Gomorrah “Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper…” -Romans 1:24-28 Is the above only a cultural caution? “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.” -1 Corinthians 6:9, 10 Again the question in light of some stated beliefs here. Will those living as fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, effeminate, homosexuals, thieves, the covetous, drunkards, revilers, swindlers when Christ returns obtain eternal life? Or at that time will they be suddenly changed? “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.” -1 Corinthians 6:9, 10 If there is any truth to the following. It says when Christ returns those that are unjust and filthy will remain that way. Or is this more of those ultra conservatives trying to run the church or wrong adventist theology REV 10And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand. 11He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. 12And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. 13I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. 14Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 15For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. Is there any truth to the above underlined. Or does it read differently depending on what sin you want to justify 10And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.

Doesn't leave a lot of room for repentance and forgiveness, although my natural tendency is in agreement. If God can forgive murder and use the man in a position of leading a whole nation to the promised land, I'm unsure of any decision for judgment that has no wiggle room. Perhaps a case by case decision after investigation could have some redeeming value. God is Love! Jesus saves!

We had two SDA schools in our county but one closed down. It was a K-12 and the Conference planned to open a new K-8 school but a law suit has prevented that so until it is settled, that campus will sit unused. The other school is on the other side of the county and not close to the expressway so it would be about an hour drive each way for our kids to go there. I wish our denomination would have a homeschool program available for parents. Communities without a school could form a homeschool association.

    A Clean Sweep

Moishe Goldberg, owner of Moishe’s Kosher Grocer, decided to do his friend Herb a favor and hire his grandson David, fresh out of college, to work in the grocery store. David reported for his first day of work and Moishe greeted him with a warm handshake and a smile, gave him a broom and said, "Your first job will be to sweep out the store." "But I'm a college graduate," David replied indignantly. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know that," said Moishe. "Here, give me the broom – I'll show you how."

    Trust and Common Sense

I agree Deaconess, in principal, yet I wonder if we sometimes dig our heals in and fail to compromise (without devaluing our principals) on non-salvational issues, (for lack of other comparison). Most definitely God is our only rock of safety ... our human companions have spent our entire lives on a sinful planet and we will fall short many times ... in our relationships and in our personal private decisions. I submit that if a person has a different faith or lifestyle than ones self, run don't walk away. Yet, do not be judgmental ... just apply self preservation. long term friendship is difficult with a different set of values. Let the conversation began ....................

    Fentanyl overdoses

Fentanyl isn't available just from medical facilities. It's being illegally distributed from other countries. Nobody is getting drug administration warnings when they buy Fentanyl from those sources. from Medscape News, March 2015

    Fentanyl overdoses

Wikipedia sez: "Fentanyl is approximately 80 to 100 times more potent than morphine and roughly 40 to 50 times more potent than pharmaceutical grade (100% pure) heroin." Lot less margin for error with overdose for a recreational user with something that potent. With heroin, you could get it wrong by a bigger margin and survive.

    Fentanyl overdoses

While patches are listed as causing problems, much of my reading indicates it would be inappropriate to prescribe the patch out of a Dr.s office, and I agree with this. It should only be done inpatient where someone can be monitored and after determining the total amount of painkillers used over the course of a day. Then a fraction of that amount would be covered by the Fentanyl patch with meds for breakthrough pain. Do keep in mind that a significant number of patients being given Fentanyl patches are those being cared for under hospice rules and for whom the usual concerns of side effects are irrelevant. Are you really going to be concerned whether someone is going to become addicted when they are going to die? I would suspect that many who get into trouble with these patches are those who steal from someone who really needs them and being "opioid naive" are overdosed with tragic results. And there are those careless with the care of someone, both in and out of the hospital, on the patch who stick on more patches without removing the old ones. http://americanhospice.org/caregiving/use-of-opiates-to-manage-pain-in-the-seriously-and-terminally-ill-patient/ I would add that pain control in the hospital has been woefully poorly managed and people suffer needlessly under the staff fears of turning people into addicts. Unless they are a drug seeker, that is unlikely to happen with good management of medications. Pain levels are now considered the 5th vital sign and hospitals are monitored by accrediting agencies such as JCAHO for the proper assessment and management of pain.

    Fentanyl overdoses

I 2006 I had total knee replacement surgery. The post-op period was extremely painful for me. My orthopedic surgeon didn't want to give me anything stronger than IM Demerol, so he called in a pain specialist. This doctor put me on a machine which I could control to give me doses of Fentanyl periodically. The pain specialist told me I could use this drug for no longer than 3 days, because "it is very addictive." I was happy to be able to ease the pain for three days, and after that I didn't need it any longer. I had exercised the new knee joint and it was working properly by then. But my use of Fentanyl was carefully managed, by a trained specialist who knew that drug. I was lucky; I had no ill effects.

Missing the point. Everyone limps, stumbles, or crawls across the finish line. It is not about hanging onto favorite sins. It is hanging onto Jesus not matter what sins are so deeply embedded that we have no control over them. It is not about us hanging our favorite sins. It is that our sins hold onto us with such a deeply embedded deep grip that humanly speaking they we are hopelessly beyond fixing. It is only a miracle of grace that gets us across the line to be changed on the other side. If one just stops and thinks of all the memories of sin stored between their own ears, where our real deep and unalterable sinfulness really resides it is overwhelming to realize how hopeless our sinfulness really is. We cannot erase or delete any of that from our head. That requires a powerful miracle that changes us all in a twinkling of an eye. Otherwise we bring it all with us.

In reading The Revelation of Jesus and really understanding its message for the first time not so many years ago, I was struck by the picture of the saints, those who are saved and the sense portrayed tha they were not looking around in surprise at others, amazed at how that person was there. The humble realization was utter wonderment at realizing that they themselves are there and that it is deep gratitude only because of God's tremendous grace that they are there. It is in that moment or supreme thankfulness that the presence of everyone else, no matter their past or the defective mess that they were only makes sense in the bright light of grace. All is forgiven. Everything is new and restored to a sinless perfection as God had intended at Creation. What any of us was before is no longer relevant.

    Fentanyl overdoses

Properly prescribed prescription medications may still have very severe side effects in some cases and this is a drug with the potential to cause serious harm and should be carefully monitored and only taken if essential. If someone has chronic pain due to a non life threatening illness and is planning on taking this indefinitely, it would probably be good to go to a pain clinic- a specialty center to treat pain- and see if they had other effective options available. If someone has a condition which is more serious such as cancer where the pain can only be controlled by this drug it should be monitored carefully.
