2015 CNN TOP 10 HERO, KIM CARTER, and her TIme For Change Foundation!!!! Good Morning, Everyone. I am so grateful to Stan for allowing me to share this. I am writing about a friend of mine from San Bernardino, CA. Her name is Kim Carter. Kim and her Time For Change Foundation, have been named a Top 10 CNN Hero for 2015. Kim has helped over 800 women and children who were homeless. She has had SDA's working for her, and SDA women. She always makes exceptions for Sabbath. Every woman and child that comes to her homes, learns about Jesus. A She is an amazing woman of God. On Sept 8, she was named to the top 10. We have till Nov 16, to get EVERYONE to vote for her daily, (from every e-mail address they have), and share. It is going to take a village. There are 9 other awesome people. "It will fail miserably," said Mike Demastus, a pastor at Fort Des Moines Church of Christ. "For Donald Trump, as a name-only Presbyterian, to be criticizing somebody else for their faith statements is laughable. This is a guy who can't even quote a Bible scripture to someone." Several influential Christian conservative leaders in Iowa, even those who publicly back GOP candidates other than Carson, came to the defense of the Seventh-day Adventist Church on Monday. Trump touched off the controversy when he said at a campaign rally in Florida on Saturday: "I love Iowa. And, look, I don't have to say it, I'm Presbyterian. ... Boy, that's down the middle of the road, folks, in all fairness. I mean, Seventh-day Adventist, I don't know about. I just don't know about." Trump didn't name Carson, then he denied in an interview on ABC's This Week on Sunday that he was trying to plant seeds of doubt about his chief rival, who's now the front-runner in Iowa, polls show. But Republican caucusgoers say they got the message. "He cast questions about Carson," said Andrea VanBeek, a 63-year-old Orange City Republican who intends to caucus for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. "In some ways, he's pretty smart in the way he says things without saying them, you know." The Des Moines Register, in an article published Saturday about the 100 days until the Iowa caucuses, had noted that some conservatives have argued Seventh-day Adventists aren't Christians. Trump's support in Iowa has plunged, although he remains securely in second place, according to a Register/Bloomberg Politics Iowa Poll and three other recent Iowa surveys.

Alexander Bryant, NAD Executive Secretary, was invited to appear on the Glenn Beck Program as a spokesperson from the Seventh-day Adventist Church to answer questions about who Adventists are and what we believe. Oakwood's Community Health Fair a Success Oakwood University's Praise Station WJOU 90.1 FM, along with Good Samaritan Hospice, hosted its third annual Community Health Fair on October 28, at the Millet Activity Center on the campus of Oakwood University. More than 70 vendors were present to provide diabetes screening, BMI Testing, dental consultation, flu shots, healthy product presentations, voter registration, other health screenings, affordable care act counseling, senior citizens info, home health care services, and healthy cooking demonstrations. Each year, two individuals from the community are awarded the WJOU-FM/Good Samaritan Hospice Health Fair Community Award. This year's recipients were the Honorable Mayor Tommy Battle, Jr. and Oakwood Alum Donna Green-Goodman, health educator, author and television host. At the event, organizers also provided three scholarships to Oakwood University students in the areas of communication, allied health and nursing. "Not only do we want to make sure we let the community know about health, we want to help students out as well who are looking into going into these health and communication-related fields," said Reggie Hicks, WJOU general manager. Oakwood on the Road - Atlanta Oakwood on the Road (OOTR) is a series of regional receptions where alumni, friends and prospective students and parents get to see and hear from OU administrators, faculty, and staff about what's happening at Oakwood University. The most recent OOTR trip to Atlanta, held on October 24, at the Berean Seventh-day Adventist Church, featured Dr. Leslie Pollard as the Divine Worship speaker and an evening concert by the Aeolians. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported this event. Oakwoodites Attend Communication Job Fair at Howard University by Naomi Coggs, student writer Several of Oakwood's communication students had a chance to let hard work meet opportunity this past week at the Howard University 2015 Job and Internship Fair. On October 21, 15 students from the department, and their sponsors Angel Baron, communication department office manager, and Dwayne Cheddar, M.A., assistant professor, left on the five-day trip to Washington, DC. Starting in 2007, the department jumped on this opportunity to expose students to networking, seminars, and internships with high caliber companies in the industry. The conference began on October 22 in Howard University's Blackburn Student Center. The first half of the conference was dedicated to seminars where students gained a plethora of insight and knowledge from panelists representing various companies including Associated Press, CBS, MSL Group, POLITICO, CNN, Sirius XM Radio, and many more. Following the informative seminars, students were able to interview with several leading companies in their respective industries during the job/internship fair. Forty-two recruiters were in attendance and accepting resumes for companies such as Bloomberg, The Boston Globe, C-Span, Creative Artist Agency (CAA), CBS News, Edelman Public Relations, Fox News, NBC, Public Broadcast Systems, and Turner Broadcasting System. Each student in attendance gained valuable information and made many new connections. "I learned the importance of networking because you never know who you are going to meet in the future," explained Mahalia Latortue, senior broadcast journalism major. "This trip helped me realize what my calling is in life," shared Nora Smith, junior, broadcast journalism major. Social Work Club Hosts Local Entreprenuer On October 1, the Social Work Club hosted entrepreneur Courtney Adeleye, founder and CEO of the Mane Choice. Adeleye (pictured, left, with her associates Lauren Smith and Alexia Amerson) inspired students with her story of turning her passion for healthy hair and science into a successful business. Adeleye's company, Mane Choice, in Madison, Alabama, produces hair products made from natural, organic ingredients. During her visit, Adeleye motivated students to believe in themselves, work hard and focus on finding ways to make a difference in the lives of others. Attendees had an opportunity to win cash giveaways, gift certificates and gift bags. The Social Work Club would like to thank The Mane Choice for being such a positive role model and for taking the time to share her testimony with the students. Oakwood Professor Lectures on Faith and Learning Francisco Burgos, Ph.D., M.Ed., MA, associate professor of English and Foreign Languages, recently participated in a video conference presented by the Southern Union Professional Learning Community (SUPLC). He presented on the topic of "Language Acquisition Resources Within Communities of Practice: Integration of Faith" to language teachers at the day and boarding academies in the Southern Union territory. Staff from several self-supporting academies were also invited. The SUPLC provides professional growth and mentoring for Southern Union secondary teachers in partnership with willing and qualified Seventh-day Adventist university professors. Dr. Burgos' willingness is evidenced by his passion for facilitating the learning of language. A follow-up letter of appreciation from Jim Ingersoll, associate director of secondary education at the Southern Union, indicated that a number of teachers are requesting Dr. Burgos' textbook series: "IFELE (Integración de la Fe en la Lengua Española -Integration of Faith in Spanish Language)." He has finished five textbooks so far: SP101 (Beginning Spanish I), SP102 (Beginning Spanish II), SP103 (Beginning Spanish III), SP201 (Intermediate Spanish I), and SP202 (Intermediate Spanish I). Allied Health Club and Dynamic Performance Host Sports Medicine Boot Camp by Naomi Coggs, student writer In celebration of National Physical Therapy Month, Oakwood University Allied Health Club and local community partner Dynamic Performance Physical Therapy, hosted a Sports Medicine Boot Camp, on October 27 at the Millet Activity Center. The free, hour-long boot camp aimed to bring awareness to the importance of physical therapy as well as injury prevention. Allied Health Club President Eryn Peeler shared, "It is very important for you to know how to do things properly, like exercise and play different sports properly so that you don't get these injuries in the first place. So, a big part of it is learning how to prevent different types of sports injuries as well." The boot camp also informed students on exercise while suffering from an injury. Students had plenty of activities to participate in as it featured exercise injury prevention, wheel chair races, prizes, and much more. With a successful event in the books, the Allied Health Club has plans to take a trip to the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) to visit their School of Health Professions next month. Alumni Notes Congratulations to Clifton Davis, '84, on his recurring role on the CBS television program "Madam Secretary." The first episode will air on Sunday, November 22. Davis will also continue to portray Princess Jasmin's father in the Broadway play, "Aladdin." When he changes clothes at night, he takes the sticker off, sticks it on his drawer, and every few days he puts it back on again. At least once a week (sometimes more) he wears his 'I ❤ Oakwood' sticker." The sticker was given to Tresor at the General Conference Session this summer in San Antonio, Texas. Our will is strengthened with exercise, but we cannot free our will from what we have applied it to when we have willed to sin. It is the supernatural grace and work of the Holy Spirit to inform us and free our will from service to selfishness when we become willing to place our will into the service of unselfishness. Being a collaborator with God, we exercise our will to do His will when he frees it from sin, after he has enlightened us. Then we may give up our desire to sin because we do not want it anymore. And then our will is free to serve God. And remains free to sin if we will to. There is only an illusion of freedom of the will when we are slaves to sin. It is merely... which form is sin will we slide to "choose". We are no longer free to praise God or serve God or do His good Will.
