when we believe our authority is the authority of God, and feel it is our responsibility to make others know the truth and make children obey the Lord... we step into all the risks of abuse of power. What makes God real to you?
Margie and one other reacted to JoeMo for a topic
Like Jessie-Jess, I believe God is real because of things I have seen or personally experienced. I have "seen" people be healed of horrible things like lameness, blindness, and deafness. I have taken part in the spontaneous healing (aka "miracle") of a man with crushed vertebrae and herniated discs in his neck - hearing bones pop and watching muscles move. God has "spoken" to me (not audibly; but "in my head"); and what He told me came to be. When I was stressing about being unemployed a few years back, God sent a literal sparrow to me that sat on my head and sang to show me that "his eyes are on the sparrow". God is real to me because I believe He has interacted with me; and experience is hard to deny (or maybe I'm a French Fry short of a Happy Meal).2 points -

I've kept a journal for some 38 years now - since I went through a dramatic conversion experience. I wrote in my journal about some 23 "miracles". Those miracles definitely strengthened my belief in a supernatural force. Seven times - during those 38 years, I "heard" a "voice" say things to me. Once it seemed audible. My husband "heard" the "voice" once (audibly) and once (in his mind). All of those miracles were not sufficient to teach me well founded doctrine. No. For that I had to search the Scriptures - intently. I'm still searching them. The amazing complexity of biological systems - also leads me to believe in a Designer. The accurate prophecies concerning Jesus, written hundreds or thousands of years before their fulfillment - lead me to believe in Him. And yes - I agree - the completely insane actions of those under the control of the Evil One, convince me there is a force for Evil, fighting against the Force for good in this world. The WAR has become more and more evident. I will share just one miracle story. In June of 2005 we had monsoon rains just like this year (2016) here in East Texas. We live up a long winding country road. It's about 3/4 of a mile from our house to where our road meets the road going into town. At that junction there is a large culvert running under our road. It is a large one now. It used to be a much smaller one. That night as it rained and rained, we didn't realize the culvert had plugged up with brush and debris, til the road completely washed out. Left was a big gash across, 10 foot wide and about 8 foot deep, with the small culvert laying in the bottom. I will attach a picture to this post if I can. My husband used to play racquet-ball at the Y, and he would leave our house about 4am. He was so used to our road, that he would drive it kinda fast - though I always worried about him hitting a deer with his little Chevy pickup. This is country, and there were no lights along the road. Back then there were only a couple of houses, back off the road. So the only lights were his headlights. As he drove down the winding road, he suddenly saw deer - I mean a big herd of them - running alongside of him. He slowed way down to let them pass. But instead of passing, they just stayed right with him. He was now going only 5 miles an hour - really creeping along. He was irritated, thinking he wouldn't have as much time to play his raquet-ball. The deer gathered in front of his pickup. They wouldn't move. They just stood there. Finally he got out of his pickup - in the rain. Then the deer dispersed. Then he saw "something"?? in the road. The road didn't look right in his headlights. What he saw about stopped his heart. The road was completely washed out, with angry water rushing through the crater. He came home and called the Sheriff and any neighbors we new. We were trapped for 2 days - cause that was the only outlet to the main road, and any off-road soil was too boggy to risk driving on. I am absolutely convinced that the LORD's angels herded those deer, to save my husband. I've gotta go search for those pictures. They're in a digital file somewhere on my husband's computer. I loaded a picture of our property back then, just so you can see how country it is.1 point -

You are misunderstanding or twisting what I said and missing the point. I did not say that on this issue that EGW gave corrective guidance to the very point in question. Very much to the contrary, there is really no evidence that she said or wrote anything to discourage women from full ministry, including preaching, teaching and pastoral ministry. Her own life and over 10,000 worth of sermons preached rather pointedly confirms her own position that a woman could and should be able to "stand in the sacred desk" and preach. There were historical accounts of her being opposed from doing so before she stood up to preach. Church leaders addressed the concerns raised, which included many of the same Biblical objections to women in ministry we keep hearing and seeing right here. After that, EGW got up and preached. And then there is her own acceptance of the ordained minister credentials, year after year for over 30 years, without a word of objection from her. The evidence is very much on the side of her support for women in ministry. If she was the messenger of the Lord as we believe, where is the clear and unequivocal word from her condemning any of the historical evidence of women fully participating in the preaching, teaching and pastoral ministry, and leadership within the Church during her lifetime? Are the three Angels' Messages Dead or Alive?

In Joel 3:1-3, the prophet quotes God as saying : “For behold, in those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, 2 I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. And I will enter into judgment with them there, on behalf of my people and my heritage Israel, because they have scattered them among the nations and have divided up my land, 3 and have cast lots for my people, and have traded a boy for a prostitute, and have sold a girl for wine and have drunk it." The Valley of Jehoshaphat stretches from the north to the south between the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives. This is precisely the valley Jesus was overlooking while delivering His Olivet discourse. This is the exact location where Joel says that the judgement of the nations will take place. In Matthew 25:31-46, while looking down at this valley, Jesus talks of how He Himself will judge the nations; gathering the goats on His left and the sheep on His right. By "coincidence", the valley of Gehenna, often referred to in scripture as the place of eternal punishment was on Jesus' left. Could Jesus have been discretely telling his disciples that He was the same God (YHVH) to whom Joel was referring? If so, Jesus is absolutely God.1 point -

Rossw quoted the following statement from Ellen White, below: If one accepted as truth that statement in the year that EGW made it, is should be noted that nowhere did EGW state that right down to the end of time there would never by a time in which that ratio changed. To apply such a statement to our time today is to put words in her mouth that she did not say. Perhaps it is exactly true today? Perhaps today it is less than 1 in 50? Perhaps it is 1 in 5? One cannot know and EGW did not say. To speculate today would be going beyond any inspired word, pure speculation without Biblical support and judgemental even if it were said today to be 1 in 1,000.1 point -

Since you singled out this one, yes there is such a reference in 1Timothy 5:9-10. This is about the older (elder) widows over the age of 60 in the context of their role as the mentors of the younger women. Remember that this is in the passage where Paul is talking to Timothy about working with the body of elders. (The textual evidence that he is including these in the discussion of the body of elders is that he is still expressly continuing to talk about the elders in verse 17.) There is some suggestion that these widows were a special office for these widows to mentor and teach the younger women. And notice specifically that Paul indeed uses the same 3 Greek words when he qualifies them if they were the "wife of one husband". The same qualification for an elder/deacon/bishop is phrased as the "husband of one wife". The literal Greek is "one woman man" or in reference to the elder widows "one man woman". In Greek this is really not gender specific phrase. The phrase appears to be a Greek idiomatic phrase that simply means "monogamous" and even today its literal English translation is used informally in popular culture to convey the same meaning - A man/woman who is a one woman man, or a one man woman is not a philanderer and is faithful to just one woman/man.1 point -

Eph 5:22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body..... 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her... Christ is the head of the church. No man or woman is the head. The wife is to voluntarily subject herself to her husband as she does to the Lord. Does the Lord coerce? Does the Lord force? No. So if the husband becomes a tyrant she is not to subject herself to such. The husband is to love his wife as he naturally cares for himself. Furthermore the husband is love his wife as Christ loved the church. We must keep in mind that the majority of God's people turned against Christ and had Him nailed to a tree. Nevertheless, Christ still loved His bride, the church. That's how the husband is to love his wife.1 point -

It is a solemn statement that I make to the church, that not one in twenty whose names are registered upon the church books are prepared to close their earthly history, and would be as verily without God and without hope in the world as the common sinner. They are professedly serving God, but they are more earnestly serving mammon. This half-and-half work is a constant denying of Christ, rather than a confessing of Christ. So many have brought into the church their own unsubdued spirit, unrefined; their spiritual taste is perverted by their own immoral, debasing corruptions, symbolizing the world in spirit, in heart, in purpose, confirming themselves in lustful practices, and are full of deception through and through in their professed Christian life. Living as sinners, claiming to be Christians! Those who claim to be Christians and will confess Christ should come out from among them and touch not the unclean thing, and be separate. . . . {ChS 41.1}1 point -

Purely conjecture. I don't believe those who are shaken out are shaken by a 'popular' movement. Likely it will be an unpopular movement that will shake out the popular group. We have an idea the unpopular view ultimately wins out because we know even most SDAs won't be saved. Seems very similar to the unpopular beginnings of the Reformation. We know it is a "thus saith the Lord" side that will always prevail which obviously is not a popular view even here. My personal opinion is this forum is very anti-fundamentalist. The fundamentals of what sets SDAism apart is rooted in Scripture. Without fundamentalism where is the SDAism? We might as well just be any other denomination and join hands with them. But going to the Scriptures alone is what SDAism is all about yet it is my impression this forum goes everywhere but to Scripture. It is amazing to hear SDAs reject Scripture.1 point -

Mrs. Musicman (after your saying Jesus' calling the Holy Spirit a "He" is misogynistic, I don't dare call you one either, do I?), Samie was clear in his post. He asked you a question, and he even answered it from his perspective himself. How, when he answered it already, can you reasonably say "you don't really know the answer to my question, and are stalling"? Your assertion that Jesus was incorrect tells any Christian nearly all they need to know about you. I'm surprised Samie bothers to continue this discussion. Your further linkage of the personality of GOD to the entirely unrelated issue of HUMAN gender roles is a comparison of apples and oranges. While I can understand your gut-level involvement with the human end of it, do you really dare to bring God into it this way? How confident you are! You are so confident that you can assert to everyone that you know better than Jesus?! Regarding 2 Peter, I'm sure you don't accept Mrs. White as a true prophetess of God, for if you did, you would not be asking these questions. However, many others here do accept her, so for them, this is sufficient evidence upon which to base one's faith: In the second letter addressed by Peter to those who had obtained "like precious faith" with himself, the apostle sets forth the divine plan for the development of Christian character. He writes: {AA 529.1} . . . Looking down through the ages to the close of time, Peter was inspired to outline conditions that would exist in the world just prior to the second coming of Christ. "There shall come in the last days scoffers," he wrote, "walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of His coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation." . . . {AA 535.2} [Compare to 2 Peter 3:1-2.] "In other words, Paul is saying that the Jesus and His message are from Satan; and that is blaspheme." These are very strong words, Mrs. Musicman, and straight from the Father of Lies. The Bible calls Paul's writings "scripture," and the Bible also says that "the scripture cannot be broken." (Shall I let you do your own homework to find it?)1 point -

On another post of mine: Yes, Green, Martin Luther was a great man and used by God. Yes, he attempted to take a stand solely on the basis of the Bible. While he often did that, the reality is that he also failed and it might be said that he failed more than he succeeded. There is much in the teachings of Martin Luther that is not soundly based upon the Bible. He may have been one who started the Protestant Reformation, but he did not finish it.1 point -
Are the three Angels' Messages Dead or Alive?
JoeMo reacted to 8thdaypriest for a topic
Revelation 5:13 “And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth . . . I heard saying, ‘Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!’” In the New Testament Scriptures, two divine beings are worshiped - the Father and the Son. That being said, the Father is ABOVE the Son. God the Father is the GOD of Christ. Long after the resurrection, Jesus called Him "my God" (Rev. 3:12). In the final END the Son will give the kingdom over to His Father, and will Himself be "subject to" His Father (I Cor 15:28). The angel's message is: "fear God and give glory to Him (singular)". In my opinion "God" in this command, refers to God our Father, and to no other. Paul said, “There is One God, the Father, of Whom are all things, AND One Lord Jesus Christ, through Whom are all things” (1Corinthians 8:6). He also wrote, “one God and Father of all, Who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:6).1 point -

Hebrews 1:6 "And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship Him." Philippians 2:10-11 “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” I don't see any exception here. EVERY knee is every knee. Jesus name is "Mighty God" (Isa. 9:6). 1 Corinthians 15:47 “The Second Man is the LORD (meaning Yahweh) from heaven.” John 20:26-29 Thomas called Christ “My Lord and My God.” (Christ did not correct him.)1 point -

Paul wrote of the need to overcome evil with good (Rom 12:21). Christ said that overcomers will not be blotted out from the book of life but instead will be seated with Him in His throne (Rev 3:5, 21). I don't think the gospel Paul preached is against the gospel Christ preached. Sorry to say this and remind you of what Peter wrote, but I have the impression you are simply misunderstanding what Paul has written. KJV 2 Peter 3:14-16 14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. As my brother's keeper, I felt obliged to remind you of the above not only because of what you were saying about Paul but also of your teaching that the Holy Spirit is a SHE. All Foods Clean?

The Pharisees would ceremonially "wash" their hands and their food before eating. Any meats were "clean" meats - according to Leviticus, but they subscribed to EXTRA ceremonial cleansing. This was part of the "heavy burdens" of the "Oral Torah" - Pharisaic code. They also strained liquids - just to make sure there were no unclean bugs in it. Remember the Pharisees complaining that the disciples did not "wash their hands" before eating. Pharisaic Law commanded it - NOT the Torah. Matthew 15:2 "Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread." (NKJ) Mark 7:3 "For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders." (NKJ) This is NOT about doing away with the Torah. Daimler is often called "the father of the motorcycle" for this invention. Even when the three steam powered two wheelers that preceded the Reitwagen, the Michaux-Perreaux and Roper of 1867–1869, and the 1884 Copeland, are considered motorcycles, it remains nonetheless the first gasoline internal combustion motorcycle, and the forerunner of all vehicles, land, sea and air, that use its overwhelmingly popular engine type.
