AVOIDING THE SINS OF SODOM AT CHRISTMAS The statement "sins of Sodom" often makes quiet people very vocal, and vocal people even more so. Memories of TV evangelists speaking of the evil come back to life when these words are heard. But before we go much further, what is the biblical definition of the sins of Sodom? "Sodom's sins were pride, gluttony, and laziness, while the poor and needy suffered outside her door" (Ezek. 16:49, NLT). I hear religious groups state that we need to "put Christ back in Christmas," calls to protest stores that say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas," and even read about boycotts of entire shopping centres. But I believe that if we want to put Christ back in Christmas, we must avoid the sins of Sodom — by practising sincere Christianity. James 1:27, "Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you" (NLT). We can help struggling single mothers by providing gifts for their children and tasty food for a Christmas dinner. We can help the widows who face spending the holidays alone by inviting them to our family table. That is putting the Christ back in Christmas. I know a group of people that sends gifts to children with a tag that reads, "Love, Mom." The kicker is that they send these gifts on behalf of mothers who are in prison. I remember the story of a police officer that came to arrest a single mom who was caught shoplifting presents for her children. The officer told the store manager that he would personally cover the cost of the goods. There are students at our Adventist boarding academies who cannot go home at Christmastime, so staff and community welcome them in to their own homes. We can avoid the sins of Sodom by doing things to give folks a helping hand and strengthen their families and lives. Show them love and let them talk about love. These are very interesting for sure!! Here's a set of wedding vows with practical merit. They might sound unconventional and unromantic. They're certainly not poetic, but these promises, if kept, will go far in sealing a marriage for the ages. When Jesus spoke about THE abomination of desolation, was He referring to more than one? The setting up of the AoD will trigger the great tribulation or time of trouble. Since according to you there are three AoD's, are you saying there will be 3 different great tribulations that will be triggered? I think this will go against Christ's specification that there will only be one great tribulation. Really... I didn't go anywhere or do anything that would interest anyone. I took my Mom to appointments, mowed her quarter acre lawn every week, planted her flowers and walked down to her place to water everything every morning... Took care of her house while she was gone visiting my brother in California. Took Dashley for walks. Planted my garden which the slugs found fascinatingly delicious, to my disgust. About the most interesting/maddening thing that happened was when some knothead stole my special blue lightbulb out of my front porch light fixture. Oh, and I watched three idiots pull up in a car in front of my house last week. One got out, ambled back behind the car, crossed the street to some bushes, and took a paper-wrapped package that was hidden there. Then he hightailed it back to the car, and they took off. Obviously a drug pick-up. The cops weren't interested unless I could give them the name of the men (like I was going to go out and interview them), or give the license plate number of the car (impossible to see with all the snow coming down). I *have* found quite a few new cousins from my genealogical research. I don't feel quite as alone now, what with having more family to chat with on FB. .... Dashley thinks I'm the most wonderful person in the world, and considers me to be "she-who-provides-doggie-cookies-and-peanut-butter-treats-every-day"
