    Thankfulness

Today, as I regularly do, I spent time providing food to people in need. These are not people displaced by the current fires in California. Food is collected from local grocery stores. It is put out on tables for display. and people come in to chose what food they may need in order to feed their families for the coming week. Many of them, we see week after week. Often they come with their young children. The selection varies some from week to week. Due to the California fires, today we did not have some of the food we generally get as it went to those affected by the fires. But, we actually had some that we do not normally have. People can pick and chose the food that they need. We do not give them a standard basket as we believe they know best what their needs are. Our gifts do not fill all of their needs for the coming week. But, it is probably that for some people, some of what they receive is likely to be all they will get this week of that product. Often, city officials, to include the Mayor give a couple of hours of their time to work with us. Today we had some Girl Scouts working with us. This is Thanksgiving. Many of us are blessed with more than some others have. Even if we to not live "high on the hog," so to speak, we are better off than are some others. We are blessed in many ways. By the way, we served some 80 families today.

As to my comment related to living "high on the hog," I assume you all know that I meant to write "high on the Loma LInda whog." Just a simple typo on my part. To those who may not understand the above, it is an "in house joke."

Which teachings are essential? Which are supportive?

Which teachings are essential? Which are supportive?

If asking about my definition of "doctrine," I see doctrine as being an explanation or statement about a belief or viewpoint. If I say "I'm saved by Grace," that's doctrine because it expresses my view on how I'm saved. Does this doctrine save me? No, I'm saved by Grace through Faith. So from that aspect NO doctrine saves anybody. It is one's belief (Faith) that saves. If I say "Jesus is the Son of God" that is also doctrine. The doctrine does not save me; believing it does. So, IMO, there are NO essential doctrines, and NO doctrine saves anybody. All are saved by Grace through Faith. But doctrine is useful for expressing our views, and hopefully some else will adopt those views (doctrines) that will lead them into a relationship with Jesus and they, too, will be saved by Grace through Faith. If I say the second coming will be after the 1000 years, that is also doctrine, but nobody cares if Christ comes before the 1000 years, after the 1000 years, or during the 1000 years because THAT belief doesn't save anybody. So from that aspect it is "nonessential," but still doctrine.

The Blog: Where We’ve Been and Where We’re Going

I thought I’d take a moment and let you know where we are with the various blogs and series that have happened this last year and moving forward. In 2017 I began sharing the book I was working on, summarizing the ideas of Graham Maxwell’s series Conversations About God. I covered the first ten of […] The post The Blog: Where We’ve Been and Where We’re Going appeared first on Jon Paulien's Blog. View the full article

    Trivia

5 Things You Didn't Know About The Gettysburg Address On November 19, 1863, Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address where he stated that all men are created equal. Here are 5 things you didn't know about one of the most important speeches ever made in America... Lincoln Wasn’t the Main Speaker Edward Everett, a famous orator and Secretary of State under Millard Fillmore, was the keynote speaker at the dedication ceremony for the Gettysburg National Cemetery. While Fillmore's speech went on for two hours and he talked about history and the Union’s heroics at Gettysburg, President Lincoln's speech was short. Afterward, Everett wrote a letter to Lincoln saying that he had said in several minutes what took Everett several hours. Lincoln Did Not Write His Speech on the Back of an Envelope Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was only 270 words long, but it was a myth that he wrote it on an envelope while on the train traveling to Gettysburg from Washington, D.C. Lincoln put a lot of thought into his short speech and started writing it the night before his trip to Gettysburg. It was completed after he arrived in Pennsylvania. The Phrase “Of the People, by the People and for the People” Was Not Original Lincoln has been credited with first saying the above phrase, but it came into being much earlier. In 1384, John Wycliffe, the philosopher and theologian, used it in an introduction to the Bible, which he had translated into English. Theodore Parker, an abolitionist preacher, also used the term in an 1850s sermon book, a copy of which Lincoln had in his possession during the early part of the Civil War. Only One Photo Exists of Lincoln at Gettysburg The one existing photo of Lincoln that was taken at Gettysburg shows only his head among the crowd. Since he spoke so briefly, it is speculated that photographers did not have enough time to set up equipment and take photos while he was on the stage addressing the audience. This photo was taken by David Bachrach, age 18, who was the uncle of Gertrude Stein, the novelist, playwright and poet. Only Five Copies of the Gettysburg Address Exist Following the Gettysburg address, some newspapers reported the speech, but it is doubtful that the words were an exact copy of what Lincoln said. Lincoln wrote it out afterward and gave copies to his two secretaries, John Nicolay and John Hay. All of the five existing copies vary slightly, and two do not contain the words “under God.”

Which teachings are essential? Which are supportive?

Absolutely right JoMo. Kinda makes one wonder if they are in the "Non-essential" category. From my studies of the Early Church, Christianity is today (largely) Trinitarian mainly due to the majority of (early church) adherents siding with Orthodoxy (Trinitarianism) rather than Arianism, and not from a solidly defensible Scriptural argument. I do not personally pray to the Holy Spirit. I pray to the Father, in Jesus' name. The Pope IS NOT the anti-Christ. And Replacement Theology is on shaky ground. (Although in this case, there being many permutations of RT, one would have to define just what one meant by the term.)

Which teachings are essential? Which are supportive?

Just like there are no texts to directly support a Trinity or that we should worship (pray to) the HS, or that the papacy is the anti-Christ, or that Christianity has replaced Israel as God's chosen people.

Dan Jackson's closing statements NAD, Nov 5, 2018

That's funny right there, as if, some of the other websites haven't been in full blown "Wilson Derangement Syndrome" for years! However, one of the things I look at when evaluating some of these websites are the comments of the readers. Way more telling about these sites are the kind of people they draw. However, you do your own evaluation of the reader comments.
