    Praying for a Miracle

Little Moishie Rosenberg called Rabbi Fine, the rabbi of a local synagogue to come by his house to pray for the speedy recovery of his mother who had been very ill with the flu. Rabbi Fine knew the family but was aware they had been attending another shul down the road. So Rabbi Fine asked, "Shouldn't you be calling Rabbi Felder from Shaarei Shamayim congregation where you are members to come by to pray with your mom?" Young Moishie replied, "Yeah I could but we didn't want to take the chance that Rabbi Felder might catch whatever it is that Mom has."

    Flying off the Handle

The Goldsteins were traveling back from Florida where they spent the Passover holiday. Waiting in line to check in, Shifra Goldstein was trying in vain to get her group of rambunctious boys to calm down. Finally, Shifra reached the counter, where the ticket agent asked her, "Have any of the items you plan to take with you on this flight been out of your immediate control since your arrival at the airport?" The young mother replied honestly, "The luggage, no; the children, yes."

    A Post Turtle

Dr. David Weinstein decided to move his practice from the city to the country because he liked the slower pace of life and the down to earth nature of the locals. He particularly liked the unique perspective of some of the local farmers. One day, Dr. Weinstein dropped in on old farmer Higgins. They got to talking about politics. Farmer Higgins said, "Well, ya know, that candidate is a 'Post Turtle'." Not being familiar with the term, Dr. Weinstein asked him what a 'post turtle' was. Farmer Higgins said, "When you're driving down a country road you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle'." Farmer Higgins saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain. "You know they didn't get up there by themselves, they don't belong up there, they don't know what to do while they're up there, and you just wonder what kind of dummy put them up there to begin with."

    Jesus and Divorce

In North America, most churches do not impose a ban on remarrying. I do not think the historic, Protestant interpretation of the divorce is correct. That is that Jesus taught Moses was wrong for allowing divorce. I do not see that Jesus was contradicting Moses. Moses allowed divorce because of the hardness of the heart. It is thus consistent that the church today allow divorce because of the hardness of the heart. However we need to support the family and address the hardness of the heart issue. If a man's heart is hard or a woman's heart is hard, is it really a good idea to force them to stay married? That is what the historic, Protestant position leads to. I do believe Ellen White was a prophet but does that mean everything she taught came from God? Isn't it possible that in some areas she was influenced by the prevailing religious thought of her day?

The Dark Day... brought about by forest fire?

Yeah, but it is interesting how often people want to find a natural cause of a supernatural event! It is like there has to be a physical natural world explanation for every supernatural event in the Bible. I still wait for an explanation of the turning back of the sun dial for Hezekiah's benefit! As mentioned, it has in all my reading never been mentioned that there was a smell of smoke in the air during the dark day. And a "dark day" from a forest fire would not have been over in a day. I highly doubt that from the distances involved that a forest fire could have rendered a whole region of the country dark as fast and as dark as the dark day has been reported to occur.

The Closing of a Texas Church

EGW said her writings, in her lifetime, were often misunderstood and misapplied. Countless hours of online dialogue with numerous individuals indicate that their interpretation of the Bible has no basis in the context of the passage in question. A remarkable ignorance of the meaning of Scripture is often evinced, ignorance which could be abated by simply allowing the context to inform the understanding. What's lacking is basic reading comprehension i.e., inadequate skills of literary analysis, which should be acquired with a basic education.
