Age is in the Eye of the Beholder

While waiting for her first appointment in the reception room of Dr. Marvin Cohen, her new dentist, Miriam Kleinman suddenly remembered that a tall boy with the same name had been in her high school class some 40 years ago. Upon seeing him, however, Miriam quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was too old to have been her classmate Marvin. After Dr. Cohen examined her teeth, Miriam asked him if he had attended the same high school. "Yes," he replied. "When did you graduate?" Miriam asked. Dr. Cohen answered, "In 1957." "Why, you were in my class!" Miriam exclaimed. Dr. Cohen looked at Miriam closely and then asked, "What did you teach?"

    Old Friends

As I age, I have had a yearning to get in touch with old friends from my "glory days". Evidently, some of my old friends have had the same urge. I have heard from a flurry of them over the past several days. My old college roommate - whom I have seen maybe 3 times in 50 years - stopped by the house for a few hours. One of our mutual college friends called me a few days ago. I wished an old girlfriend a happy 68th birthday; and we chatted a while. It was bittersweet. It made me think of two old songs - "Old Friends" by Simon and Garfunkel and "Glory Days" by Bruce Springsteen. One of the most poignant lines in either song is "Can you imagine us years from today, sharing a park bench quietly. How terribly strange to be 70". I'm in my 70th year now. Some of you are there or beyond, I'm sure. As I age, I find it more difficult to make new friends. Oh, it's easy to make acquaintances but friends like I had in my glory days are few and far between. And so many of them are very ill or mentally out of it. I see it in my siblings as well. I am thankful to still be relatively healthy. I am thankful for old friends who still stay in touch. I am thankful for the few new friends I have been able to make (to replace those who have died or left). I look forward to reuniting with many of them in the Kingdom. Thank God for my faith that gives me the hope of being reunited with those I have lost over the past 69 years. I thank God for you all as my "social media" friends - my only social media fans. 5 Interesting Facts About The History of Emoticons On Sept. 19, 1982, Scott E. Fehlman, a professor at Carnegie Melon University, invented emoticons using characters on his keyboard. Here are 5 interesting facts about the history of emoticons, the precursors to emojis which are used on social media today... Emoticons First Appeared in 1881 Emoticons technically first appeared around 1881, which is the same year metal detectors were invented, Charles Darwin published his final book and a long time before anyone ever thought of Coca Cola. The first emoticons were used by Puck magazine on March 30, 1881, and referred to as typographical art. They feature the emotions of indifference, joy, astonishment, and melancholy. The Sideways Smiley Face Was the First Internet Emoticon It is unknown whether those at Carnegie Melon University were a little slow at picking up on a joke or the first emoticon was just used as an added tweak for messages. Scott Fehlman placed the first emoticon, which was a colon, hyphen, and parenthesis to indicate a smiley face, on a message board online so others could tell that it was meant as a joke. The smiley face emoji is credited to ad man and graphic artist Harvey Ross Ball, who came up with the idea to raise employee morale at an insurance company. Emoticons Aren’t Quite the Same Thing as Emojis While emoticons are still in use, in many cases, they have been replaced by the emoji, particularly on social media sites. Emoticons use characters such as letters, numbers, and punctuation marks, while emojis are actual pictures and often based on variations of the smiley face. The first mobile phone known to use emojis was released in 1997 by J.Phone. A Movie About Emojis Was Released in 2017 The Emoji Movie, starring voices by stars such as Patrick Stewart and Christina Aguilera, was released in 2017 and is about an emoji that lives inside the smartphone of a teenager. Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation produced this award-winning film. Unfortunately, the awards it won were Golden Raspberries and included Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, Worst Screen Combo, and Worst Director. Twitter Emojis Are Tracked Some people are interested in knowing which emojis are the most popular and which are seldom used, so Emoji Tracker lets them follow what’s happening around the world in real time. Numbers are pulled from Twitter, and they change so quickly that a warning appears for those who might have a sensitivity to lights that blink rapidly.

God may not have given the Sabbath to gentiles, but he certainly promised great things to those who kept it: "For this is what the Lord says: “To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose what pleases me and hold fast to my covenant— to them I will give within my temple and its walls a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters;... And foreigners who bind themselves to the Lord to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord, and to be his servants, all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it and who hold fast to my covenant— these I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.” (Is. 56:4-7) Unfortunately, Israel never bothered to consistently share God with the surrounding nations; in fact they avoided it "religiously". The nations around Israel were more successful sharing their gods with Israel than Israel was in sharing the true God with the nations. God may have given the Law exclusively to the Israelites, but He also commanded them to share it with the surrounding nations. They didn't do that very well.

The Biblical Sabbath, as established at Creation, is much more than going to church and worshiping. That probably came into being with the Jews. As established the Sabbath was a time to set apart a day that was free from the routine of live. That day was to be centered in one's spiritual life and fellowship with God. It is actually a perversion of the original intent to center the Sabbath focus on going to church and on worship. Neither is wrong, just as it is not wrong to go to church and worship on Sunday. NOTE: As a Federal chaplain, I have conducted more worship services on Sundays than I have on Saturday. The Sabbath, as it should be kept today, is between the individual and God. It is not up to me to determine for you the parameters as to how you should keep the Sabbath in both spirit and in truth. It is O.K. for me to challenge you to think through issues related to Sabbath keeping. But, in the end, that is between you and God.

    Trivia

5 Things You Didn't Know About The New York Times On September 18, 1851, the first edition of the New York Times was published. Here are 5 surprising facts you probably never knew about the New York Times... The Newspaper’s Founder Had Gatling Guns Installed on the Building’s Roof In July 1863, violent demonstrations took place in New York City in protest of a recent law that permitted conscription of citizens during the Civil War but also let Americans who could afford it off the hook if they could pay $300 for a substitute. The protest lasted for four days as shops were looted and properties burned, and attacks were made upon free blacks and rich whites or anyone who was a draft supporter. The editor and founder of the New York Times, Henry Raymond, had several Gatling guns installed on the roof, which he threatened to fire if protesters came too close to the building. The large crowd of rioters took their anger out instead on the New-York Daily Tribune, which was undefended. The New York Times Once Condemned The Crossword Puzzle Many people enjoy doing the New York Times crossword puzzle these days, but when the first one was published in a defunct New York newspaper in 1913, this major paper was not as excited. One NYT columnist went so far as to refer to crosswords as a “form of madness” and a sinful waste. The first crossword puzzle in the newspaper appeared after Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese in 1941 when the editor told the publisher that readers needed something relaxing in the face of all the news about World War II. The New York Times Balked at Using Colored Print The New York Times was among the last U.S. newspapers to use colored print, even though USA Today and other rivals had started using colored print in 1982. Color was first used in the NYT in the section for book reviews and was limited to using green and orange as a test case because the editors thought there wouldn’t be too much of a fuss if the colors weren’t good. However, on October 16, 1997, the first front-page article appeared using color. The Puzzle Editor Is the Only Person With a Degree in Crossword Puzzles Surprisingly, the editor of the crossword for the New York Times, Will Shortz, is a real fan and sold his own first puzzle at age 14. He majored at Indiana University in enigmatology (which is, of course, puzzles) and holds a degree in it. In addition, he obtained a law degree from the University of Virginia, which would have come in handy if the degree in puzzles didn’t pan out as he had hoped. The New York Times Created The Ball Drop on New Year’s In Times Square on New Year’s Eve, a glittering electrified ball drops and draws a huge crowd every year, with around 1.2 million home viewers watching on television. This event was created by the New York Times more than 100 years ago and was originally used as an advertising gimmick for the newspaper’s new headquarters. The first time a ball was dropped was in 1905 on New Year’s Day, and the paper advertised for people to come to see the spanking new building at midnight where a fireworks display was presented. People in New York returned yearly, and the first electrified ball was dropped in 1907.

    Are we far behind?

I saw a couple studies that asked why young people are vacating the churches. The #1 reason given by young people, in both study results, was their acceptance of the doctrine of evolution as taught in the public schools. The Evil One knew, that taking over the public schools, and excluding any mention of God, or of "intelligent design creation" would decimate the churches. The kids don't believe the Bible is true history, because the "science" they're taught says otherwise. The #2 reason given, was the hypocrisy of believing adults, preaching/teaching one thing, yet doing something else. Before focusing on gays, or women as teachers, etc., maybe focus on the #1 and #2 reasons. I've been buying and watching creation science videos the last several months, and posting the best ones under my "Recommended Reading and Resources" page on my website prophecyviewpoint.com. Buy a few yourself, and share them with your kids. Discuss them with your kids, before sending them off to school. Unless you give your kids some creation science, they will swallow the evolution delusion.

    Life Support

David Sharfman had been dating Mindy Newman for a few months and things were getting serious so they decided that it was time for David to meet Mindy’s parents. "So tell me David,” Mr. Newman prodded, “Can you support a family?" Surprised, David replied, "Well, no. I was just planning to support your daughter. The rest of you will have to fend for yourselves!"

    Stone Cold

Congregation Beth Israel decided that the stone which formed the step up to the front door of the shul had become too worn by its years of use, and would have to be replaced. Unfortunately, there were hardly any funds available for the replacement. Then someone came up with the bright idea that the replacement could be postponed for many years by simply turning the block of stone over. After accompanying the shul’s handyman to try flipping over the stone, Rabbi Felder reported back to the congregation. “My dear congregants, I have bad news. It was a great idea, but our great-grandparents beat us to it.”

    Who's fooling who?

There is no question that sooner or later HCH will get something correct. It may just be his former prediction that President Trump would die, if not days, perhaps weeks, or months or years later. Probability tells us that HCH will at some point in time get something right. But, getting something correct does not prove that the Bible predicted it.
