    Experimenting with Plant-based Eating

Growing up as an Adventist we had a predominantly vegetarian diet, but would maybe have some chicken on Christmas or at my grandparents' place. I'd moved away from that and was pretty omnivorous for a lot of years. My two daughters and their partners are both vegetarian, and a fair way toward veganism, and have been for some years. For one of them it is mostly about the environmental impact of animal agriculture, for the other it is mostly about animal welfare and avoiding cruelty. I'd been reducing the amount of meat I ate for a while, and decided this year to be vegetarian for January and vegan for February. It's going well so far and I'm enjoying it: there are a lot more options than there used to be, but it's also about getting past simply substituting 'shmeat' for meat and just cooking entirely plant-based dishes. I think I'll find veganism harder, because I do enjoy an omelette and milk in my coffee and a cheese platter. So, after February, I'll probably go back to being vegetarian, but also minimise use of other animal products like milk and eggs, and choose things like free-range eggs to make that as ethical as possible. I realise there can also be issues with various plant-based foods too, and would work to minimise those. I don't think perfection is possible in this imperfect world. One of the trickiest things of course is that my beloved wife is less keen on vegetarianism, which will be fine: we can eat different things sometimes. Anyway, no big announcements, really, more an interest in discussion and in sharing experiences. One of the things that's been really interesting is that our daughters led us by example, but never judged, preached or scolded. Just stayed in relationship with us and ate what they chose. If asked they'd tell us why, but there was no active evangelism.

    Daniel Revisited

I believe that while the book of Daniel did not specifically spell it out, the prophet Daniel knew exactly what 2300 days meant. And he knew that it was to begin sometime in the future. Part of the reason he became so disturbed is the realization that the kingdom of God to come was still thousands of years in the future. So, I will stick the the 2300 years that have come and gone. No "time" prophecies remain to be fulfilled in the Bible.

    When Did It Become Acceptable?

Again, like the author of the article said, "The church of today is not the church I grew up in. In some cases that is a good thing, in other cases it is definitely not good." Then he noted quite a long list of things that have come into the church including bring meat to church functions, our priorities ahead of God's priorities, disregard the SOP, promote homosexuality, ordain transvestite elders, sanction sporting events held on the sabbath, go to restaurants on the sabbath, promote mystical practices, deny the Holy Spirit, bring dancing and rock n roll into churches, perform abortions in adventist hospitals, and unaceptable to speak out against wrongs in the church. So, which of those things should be aceptable today? It seems the last one is definitely not acceptable any more. Sad that those who express an opinion against these practices should be referred to in such a way as to put them down. I am afraid the pioneers of this church would be shocked beyond belief to look into the practices of many in the SPD, TED, and NAD divisions. Here is the lastest from Australia: Huge smiles watching SDA Kinship Australia representing LGBT Seventh-day Adventists in Sydney today for the annual Mardi Gras parade (akin to Pride parades here). With so much religiously-fueled homophobia, it's crucial for LGBT people of faith to know they aren't alone. I get requests often for support for LGBT Adventists from around the globe, and I am always so grateful to be able to refer people to SDA Kinship Int. for resources, support, and conversation with others who entirely understand the challenges of being both LGBT and Adventist (whether still identifying as Adventist or not). Given that frequently articles are written that include the words "Mardi Gras" and "debauchery" in the same title. When should the name Seventh-day Adventist be on the banner of a group in such an event? NEW ORLEANS' MARDI GRAS: SODDEN DEBAUCHERY BECKONS https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1995-01-29-9501200565-story.html Seems we are repeating the same old story from the Bible. When the leaders who followed God died, the people went their own way and fell into wickedness. Over and over again.

    Daniel Revisited

Great post, I mostly agree, when I have time will come back with a question or two. And of course MHO. I may not be reading your context or intention quite correctly here; but this is a good point. God tends to (although not always) let us know on an as needed basis. For eg; He doesn't dole out "grace," in advance, before whatever we need it for has happened. "As your days, so shall your strength be." Many applications similarly, in NT. I can summarize really briefly how I currently view it. As some might have figured by now, I am very interested in any views that have "Christ and Him crucified" at the Center and helm of a given "prophecy." (Gal 6:14). is a major reason, but there are many others. I really have been having marvellous studies on prophecy lately that lead one along such lines. I have also said elsewhere, we could likely use less emphasis & energy spent on "predictions," and more on Jesus; His life, His death, his resurrection, and His second coming. IMO these ARE the four Pillars of all Bible prophecy. All other prophecy is corresponded with power and influence; according to their relation to this theme. On a similar note, OT prophecy does play several important roles in the more modern NT Bible prophecy; such as "the repeating of history" and building the theme of Christ and Him crucified as the central pillar, rather than a side issue of our prophetic dogmas. I can give one quick example here then have to run - I am looking after a very sick loved one these days, so "time is short." A lot of people, I have noticed that get into "Israel" and "Israel In Bible Prophecy," choose to delve into Ezekiel; and getting too caught up in predictions and dates. Im not saying its wrong to delve into - just not very central to "christ and Him crucified." Let me explain really fast with a passage from Ezekiel: The Lord God Will Seek Them Out Eze 34:11 'For thus says the Lord GOD: "Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. Eze 34:12 As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day. Eze 34:13 And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land; I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, in the valleys and in all the inhabited places of the country. Isnt this very similar to an occassion where Jesus said: ""What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying?" (Mat 18:2) So this shows that history can repeat itself, Jesus often uses said history to tell people how to have a relationship with Jesus. THAT is what prophecy is about "Great Controversy, pg 622: "We should acquaint ourselves with God NOW by proving His promises." (compare Ezekiel 34:15) till next time. Ill get to your post asap Trevor

    Daniel Revisited

The Jubilee years start the Yom Kippur of a year that ends in our number 4 and where in January we start a year ending in 5. Yom Kippur 1844 happened to be the end of a cycle of sabbatical years and the start of a Jubilee according to the high date. 1455 BC or number 00 or number 50 years according to the low date, 1250 BC. As to the final fulfillment of the prophecies, God will let us know when it is time. In the mean time there will be things that can apply over history. As we learn more about the exegesis, and more about applications (at least the good ones) the foundation will be built for what we need to know including if we live in the last time the principle cycles around. There is a big problem with our application of the 1260 days because we make it a day year, yet the textual context is that they are literal days in the 70 weeks that we have already used the year day principle, so we have to be very careful of applications that use other principles outside of the literal days. We look at the application of the Papacy as the little horn in Daniel, and I believe correctly, but there was another application that we can also look at to learn both what we need to learn about the exegesis (sometimes they were not literally fulfilled but could have been in or soon after the generation that gets the message) but the Flavian Emperors also fit. There were 10 Roman Emperors, and 3 plucked up with Vespasian becoming emperor, his son Titus destroying the temple and other son Domitian being the emperor of Revelation reviving the persecution of Nero, 666 (or 616 depending on how much of his name you use). Every time we again have the persecution that originated with Nero we can re-apply 666. Domitian may have prided himself on being the great little horn of Daniel, but John pointed out that whether the world ends under his persecution is not based on him but on the spreading of the gospel, and that the church had lost it's first love and the theme of Revelation is "Preach again!" God is not waiting for the exile, the fall of Jerusalem, Domitian, Sunday Laws etc. but when the gospel has been spread into all the world, then shall the end come. The application of Revelation 13 is any organization that replaces Christ in our life. Had Hezekiah shared the gospel with the Babylonians his reformation could have spread to the whole world and not too long before the Messiah was king. Instead he showed them his stuff and they brought to Babylon the memory of his stuff and they came back and took it and instead of the Messiah, the son of David ruling over God's people, it entered a period or others instead of Christ or in Greek "Antichrist" and seven periods to cover from the Son of David until we are again ruled by the Son of David. These are: Babylon, Medio-Persia, Greece, Rome, The Holy Roman Empire, the deadly wound (the crowns are on the horns not the head. thus the beast is and is not and is yet to come). The deadly wound is a period of independent nations, some based on the American Revolution offering freedom, others based on the French Revolution (with a different understanding of freedom where they came to feel that the elite could be free and needed more control over the common people). as well as some trying to maintain catholic Europe where the place you were born decided if you were Roman Catholic, Reformed Roman Catholic (with a reformation based on the Bible, i.e. Protestantism), Eastern Orthodox, or Islam, which was apparently an early reformation, but did not know how much of the church's corruption crept into the Bible. (Sadly, in current politics too many Republicans want to bring us back to catholic Europe, and too many Democrats want to bring us to post French Revolution Europe, and too many have forgotten a little thing called the American Revolution. ) Then there is the 7th head, which is different from the others since the others use politics and warfare to conquer, the 7th head is the world volunteering union under economic cooperation where the merchants of the earth (or corporations) instead of politicians are leading out.

    Daniel Revisited

Greetings again BlessedMan, Perhaps one way to explain this is to refer to the SDA book “SDAs answer questions on doctrine” pages 478-479 where three categories of Millerites are mentioned. It speaks of “literalists”, and some of these “taught the restoration of the Jews”. In contrast the view adopted by Miller and others was that only the faithful would survive the return of Jesus. From my own experience, when I was 23 I discussed a few aspects of the Bible with a workmate, whose mother was a SDA. She arranged for a SDA Pastor and his assistant to visit my home and I asked about some of the detail of the OT prophecies. Their answer was that these details will not be fulfilled, and that they were conditional on Israel repenting at the time. My understanding of many of these prophecies is that Israel’s failure to respond is prophesied, but nevertheless despite their scattering there would be a partial restoration before the return as a basis for the events surrounding the return of Jesus and the conversion of a remnant and the subjection of the nations Isaiah 2:1-4, Micah 4:1-8. I agree with most of this except that I believe that the death and resurrection of Jesus is as a representative, not substitution. I disagree with this aspect. Kind regards Trevor

The futurist view does not say ALL details are consigned to a future date. Some futurist view prophecies have been and are being fulfilled: 1917 - the Balfour Declaration; Jews begin moving back to Israel 1947 - Israel becomes a nation; Jews move back to Israel en masse 1967 - Israel wins the 6-day war - recovers part of Jerusalem and much of the land promised th Abraham, Isaac and Jacob 2017 - The United States recognizes Jerusalem an the capital of Israel Notice the 50 year span between events of 1917 and 1967; and again between 1967 and 2017. Just a conjecture (also put forth by some Messianic jewish rabbis), but could 1917,1967, and 2017 been Jubilee years? Just a question.

    Experimenting with Plant-based Eating

So I got through vegetarian January and vegan February, and ended up deciding that for me, for now, veganism is a step too far, but I'll continue vegetarian, with a preference for vegan where I can get it and it's easy. So I'm using oat milk instead of cow's milk in my coffee, and things like that, but will still have some eggs or cheese with breakfast and so on.

    Trivia

5 Surprising Facts About the Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping On March 1, 1932, the Lindbergh baby was kidnapped from his crib on the upper floor of the home. Here are five surprising facts you didn’t know about the kidnapping of the son of aviator Charles Lindbergh. Lindbergh Paid $50,000 in Ransom to the Kidnapper Just after the baby’s kidnapping from his second-floor nursery on March 1, 1932, a ransom note demanding $50,000 was found on the windowsill of his room. Arrangements were made with a local doctor to act as the go-between to comply with the kidnapper’s demands. The doctor paid the money to an unknown man in the Bronx in early April. A search was conducted to find the baby after the kidnapper told the doctor that the baby was onboard a boat in Massachusetts. However, after an exhaustive search of every port, there was no sign of either the boat or the child. Gold Certificates Tied Hauptmann to the Murder and Kidnapping Plot When Lindbergh decided to pay the $50,000 ransom, the FBI made sure the payment was trackable. The serial number of every bill was recorded, and most of those bills were gold notes. On September 15, 1934 a Manhattan gas station attendant was handed one of those gold notes. He took down the license plate number of the motorist who paid him with it — and the next morning, police tracked the plate back to Bruno Richard Hauptmann, who had $14,600 in Lindbergh ransom bills hidden in the frame of his garage. A Truck Driver Found the Baby’s Body On May 12, 1932, the baby’s body was discovered by a delivery truck assistant named William Allen around four miles from the estate of the Lindbergh family. Allen walked into a treed area to relieve himself and spotted the child’s body. He and the other man in the truck, Orville Wilson, drove to Hopewell, New Jersey, to notify police. Time magazine pointed out that if Allen hadn’t gotten out of the truck and gone into the woods, police would have still been looking for the child. The examination by the coroner showed the infant had died several months prior. The cause of death was a blow to the head. The Man Arrested for the Kidnapping Had a Long Criminal Record Bruno Hauptmann, arrested as a suspect in the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh, Jr., had a long record back in his native Germany for burglary. On his record was an incident where he entered the second story of a house by using a ladder, which was similar to how the Lindbergh baby was taken. Although Hauptmann maintained his innocence until the end, he was executed in the electric chair for the Lindbergh baby kidnapping and murder on April 3, 1936. The Case Inspired Federal Legislation On June 17th, 1932 — three and a half months after Charlie’s kidnapping — the 72nd Congress passed the Federal Kidnapping Act, or the “Lindbergh Law,” which made the transportation of abductees across state lines a federal crime that was punishable, in especially heinous cases, by death. President Hoover signed the bill into law on June 22, which would have been Charlie’s second birthday.

TrevorL, Interesting. Not saying your wrong, but I mostly disagree with the stuff about the papacy: I could be wrong; but I believe the identity of the Beast and the Antichrist is yet to be revealed. Antichrist or no I do believe the papacy will have a significant role in the coming apostasy.

5 Things You Didn't Know About Malcolm X_2 On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X, a black civil rights leader who was feared by some and respected by others, was assassinated at age 39. Here are five things you probably didn't know about Malcolm X. He Wasn't Born Malcolm X Malcolm X's birth name was Malcolm Little. Malcolm took "X" to represent his unknown African name, and in 1950, he began signing his name "Malcolm X." By rejecting "Little," he sought to cast aside the surname that had been forced upon his ancestors by white slave owners. The letter "X," in contrast, represented his true, yet tragically unknown, African tribal name. He Converted to Islam in Prison Malcolm was sentenced to eight to 10 years in jail in 1946 after committing burglaries in wealthy white neighborhoods. It was in jail where he converted to the Nation of Islam and changed his name to Malcolm X. He went to visit the founder, Elijah Muhammad, in 1952 in Chicago, and it was quickly discovered that Malcolm was an impressive orator with the ability to attract more members. In just over 10 years, the membership of the group rose from 500 in 1952 to 30,000. The FBI Followed His Every Move As a prisoner in 1950, Malcolm wrote a letter to President Harry Truman in which he declared himself a Communist opposed to the Korean War. This caught the attention of the FBI, which began surveillance of Malcolm X that continued for the rest of his life. In one document that has since come to light, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover told the agency’s New York office to “do something about Malcolm X.” He Created the Nation of Islam's Newspaper Malcolm X created the Nation of Islam's Newspaper and started the street-corner sales requirement. If you've seen NOI members selling newspapers on street corners, that process -- and the Muhammad Speaks newspaper itself -- were part of X's influence on the NOI. He started the newspaper and decided that members should sell the paper on corners as a fundraising method. The sales also served as a recruitment method. He and Redd Foxx Were Dishwashers at the Same Restaurant Malcolm was working in 1943 at a Harlem restaurant called Jimmy’s Chicken Shack along with John Sanford, who later became famous as the comedian Redd Foxx. Malcolm reported that they committed petty crimes together, but Foxx’s life took a different direction after he went to Los Angeles and did his comic routine at a nightclub called the Brass Rail. Malcolm went to Boston in 1945 and was arrested that year, along with others, for committing a number of burglaries and ended up being sentenced to prison at Charlestown with an eight- to 10-year sentence to serve.

My kids were raised vegetarian but now all eat some meat, as do I. I am amazed, though, at how healthily they do cook. For me the current motivation toward fleshless eating came with caring for our dogs and learning how intelligent and emotional animals are. I have a deeper respect for them now.
