    Goulard: Churches are Absolutely Essential

What if the church is a place where lives are transformed from the inside out, where people make decisions to follow Christ, and find not only find community, but actual real and powerful solutions to their failing marriage, their chronic mental illnesses, their abject loneliness, their anger and fear and judgment, and pain? Reconsidering One of EGW's Key Prophecies

I have that book by Kenneth Oster and I went to GNYA with Jon.

  3. One thing I have come to realize in recent discussions is that many people who read Ellen White treat her writings as if they were apocalyptic prophecy, and therefore not subject to the Bible’s principles for interpreting classical prophecy. There are visions she describes that remind one of Revelation 4-5 (heavenly journeys), but nothing like […] The post Sunday Laws and Bible Prophecy (14): Ellen White, A Classical Prophet appeared first on Jon Paulien's Blog. Reconsidering One of EGW's Key Prophecies

A number of places, some lectures by my professors, some of our leaders in the Middle East, and also reading such as the book Islam Reconsidered by Kenneth Oster, and a book I recently read on Revelation by Jon Paulien.

Reconsidering One of EGW's Key Prophecies

Islam arose at a low point of the dark ages. Mohamad recognized the truth of worshiping the God of the Jews but saw Judaism as incomplete without Jesus, but did not know how much of Christianity was true and how much it was corrupted by the state of the church in his day and how much of that corruption may have been introduced into the Bible. The venerations of the saints was very large, and he appears to have tried to go back to what he was thinking might have been a basic belief and correct worship of the Judaio-Christian God. And of course he was a victim of his times as later Luther was of his times and we are of our times. What developed into catholic Europe consists of four sections. Roman Catholics, Eastern Catholics, A reformation movement not sure how much of the Bible could be trusted (Islam) and a reformation based on trusting the Bible (Protestantism).

    Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

I actually experience self-actualization which Moslow believe only 10% of the population does. I believe one of the reason that so few do is because they are content with the love and belonging needs being met. They don't desire the higher needs. It makes me think that there is something even higher than self-actualization that we will not know about until we get to heaven.

    Apostolic Succession

Thank you JoeMo for that update on 8th day. You are absolutely right that the Edict of Constantine had significant influence. On the other hand, Christians had been worshiping on Sunday for at least 300ish years by this time. And it did not prescribe worship on Sunday, but rather an official rest day when markets and public offices were closed. Farmers (which was pretty much everybody) could still farm, fishermen could still fish, etc. Not much different than today's "blue laws."

Reconsidering One of EGW's Key Prophecies

Much of this is semantics. "Allah" is simply the Arabic word for "God". If you are an Arabic-speaking Christian, "Allah" is the word you would use for the Christian god. While Christians and Muslims have drastically different conceptions of God, what does it mean to worship the same god or a different god? Christians believe that the trinitarian God is a reality, and that the god described in the Islamic texts doesn't exist. If Christianity is true, either the Muslims worship the same God, but have a misconception of His character and nature, or they worship a non-existent entity (in which case they are worshiping nothing). They can't worship a different God unless there exists more than one God. And if both "Yahweh" and "Allah" exist and are different gods, then Christianity is not true, since Christianity teaches that there is but one God (and Islam would not be true since Islam also teaches there is but one God).

    A list of SDA offshoots

When I was in High School (Academy for SDAs) a friend and I rode our bicycles from Wawona (in Yosemite National Park) to Modesto, California. We basically pushed our bikes up the road to get out of the valley and then spent a night sleeping in sleeping bags in a farmers field. As a result, we got our pictures in the Modesto Bee. The total distance we rode was about 110 to 120 miles. We arrived on the 2nd day.
