    The U. S. Civil War

    The U.S. Civil War occurred from 1861 to1865. During this period of time, both sides had to institute a mandatory military draft. Both sides had a process by which a person could pay a specific sum of money to escape being drafted. On the part of the Union side, the U.S. side, two programs existed, each with some differences, by which a person could pay a sum of $300 and not be drafted. Today that sum, after inflation would be equal to about $7,489. Seventh-day Adventist congregations, in those early days, generally attempted to raise the needed funds for members who were about to be drafted into the military.
