Moderators lazarus Posted June 8, 2007 Moderators Posted June 8, 2007 By Da T.R.U.T.H Who would have known that a couple of guys from Columbine Would come from behind—put guns to the spine Of some innocent people—the teachers, the students The feet of the teachers are screeching through rooms The mood has been set by the fear of the villains The bombs and the threats are by Eric and Dillon America's villains—generic you're feeling It is not—it is the plot for a pair that is chilling In the glorious heavens, standing for Christ in a crisis I know that it's rare what I'm feeling Excitement incited—declaring the Pilgrims' Faith and their fate I’ma share with my children Cassie and Rachel, the past of the patrons That passed through the ages in Africa, Asia The Master that saved you, the laughter, the hatred Jesus predicted that the masses would hate you Hook So, don't think it strange if a change might occur If it does, are you ready and prepared for the curve And a turn for the worst—would you fight, would you fall Would you die for the Christ, that's the price of the call (5X) The bones that are picked are the bones that depict That they combed through their homes with the stones and the sticks The aromas—a stench—so they rose up against them At home and at Rome—throwing stones at the Christians Got a hold of them—gripped them, kicked them, scarred them Saw them, sawed them—they were thrown in a pit With the toads and the vermin—I'm rolling the clips It's urgent the scourges—the groans from the licks The anger, the stranglers, the hangers, the danger For all of the Christians that rolled in a clique Ended up in the teeth of the beast that would feast On the saints that would preach—they were thrown over cliffs This is not known to exist in the states Or the place where the home is just bliss This song is intense—'cause it's truth And I'm trying to convince you that no one's exempt Yet no one's equipped Got our phones on our clips Our focus is both on our loans and our cribs Our fitness—our business has grown in a pinch Would you fight would you fall Would you ball up your fist Would you falter or march to your grave 'cause you're saved And your life is in Christ and to die is to gain Would you die in His name For the rise of His fame Despising the shame 'Cause you're promised to reign Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. Dr. Shane Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 I think they are trying to appeal to a certain group of unbelievers. Dressing like those you are trying to reach makes some sense. Acting like them is another issue. We should not behave poorly in order to attract others that behave poorly to the truth. That makes no sense. However dressing like them and singing their kind of music with gospel lyrics should not be dismissed so quickly. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Kountzer Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 I've heard some christian rap that was good. I don't know if I'd care to listen to it on a steady basis, but it was okay. I was surfing through the video feeds on the website churchpond, and I saw and heard some young rapper doing what it do at the 11am worship svc at some sda church in Tennessee somewhere. So it's out there. The younger generation create and embrace new forms of musical expression/genres as a forms of rebellion. The more the older generations dislike them the more the younger generations like them. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass
pacunurse30 Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Here's a question to stir up controversy. Do all forms of music belong in the sanctuary during divine worship hour? What kind of service should the divine hour be? Should it be "stand still and know that he is God?" Or is it "praise him with the timbrel and dance?" Quote
olger Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Coming out of the 60's, there is some music that I cannot worship God with. I cannot. I don't make a scene if I am in the midst of it. I sit quietly and worship later, at home, or elsewhere. If it is baptised rock music, then we will simply find somewhere else to worship the Almighty Ruler of all. I doubt if that answers your question real good..John Thurber (of the King's Heralds) wrote a book called "the music of heaven" a couple years ago. I have a copy and it was encouraging & enlightening. all the best, olger Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.."
Moderators Bravus Posted June 12, 2007 Moderators Posted June 12, 2007 I think there's not a single, simple answer, and that it depends on the audience. Unlike some here, I don't believe that style and genre and instrumentation determine whether music is sacred or profane... lyrics and intent do that. But obviously if a style of music is going to offend and alienate members of the congregation it shouldn't be used. For some that will be hymns, for some contemporary Christian music (which although it has its roots in rock and pop is now a style in itself, for some hip hop or rock. I know that the music I like would offend a majority of the saints, so I don't push for it to be played in church. I guess this is a long-winded way of saying that all forms of music potentially can belong in church, but it depends on the church. Quote Truth is important
Dr. Shane Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Quote: I don't believe that style and genre and instrumentation determine whether music is sacred or profane... lyrics and intent do that. I completely agreed. :JF Quote: But obviously if a style of music is going to offend and alienate members of the congregation it shouldn't be used. I built a Methodist church that had two services. The first was a traditional service, then they had Sunday school, then the second service was a contemporary service. That seems to solve the problem. Another option for Adventist churches is to have Sabbath school, a traditional service, potluck and then AY as a contemporary service. That is another fine option. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... I don't make a scene if I am in the midst of it. I sit quietly and worship later, at home, or elsewhere.olger I think both sides of the music/worship debate are coming to the point where they realise that its often personal preference that is the issue. I can understand and respect someone who cannot worship with a particular kind of music. I don't really like country music and so I have a hard time relating to Christian songs with a country flavor. The problem comes when we label certain types of music as of the devil and unholy. The way music and played and the atmosphere created is often the key issue with music and worship. I have been in traditional churches where, if I did not know better, I would concluded that God had died during the week and I witnessing was His funeral. There were other contemporary churches that gave me the impression that worship was really about them and how hip and contemporary they all are. I'm kinda tired of all the debates in churches. I just want to worship! Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities.
