K Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 I think the role of the feds is to enforce the laws that we have. It would take a lot of resources that are already spread pretty thin to protect our borders well enough to stop the steady stream. If the employers were punished as the should be for hiring illegals, then there would be nobody crossing the border because they could not gain employment. It doesn't seem like rocket science to me. Quote Proverbs 15:15 He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.
Dr. Shane Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 Nice to see you back K. I have missed you in our cyber community. If we are going to hold employers responsible, as we must, we need to provide them a reliable means of verifying an applicant's legal status. A national ID with photo, magnetic strip and thumb print does that. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
K Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 The only problem I have with your statement is the fact that you said IF. It is the current law that illegals are not supposed to be working. It is the current law that employers should be punished. IF is why we have the problem. I am surprised too about your national ID card idea. It seems like the "mark of the beast thingy to me." We should be able to plug in a person's SSN and know immediately if it is good. Isn't that already a national ID. We live in the age of fast information. I don't understand why it is so hard to figure out who is here officially and who is not. Quote Proverbs 15:15 He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.
Dr. Shane Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Mark of the beast is Sunday sacredness. It has nothing to do with national IDs. Many nations have national IDs and they are not enforcing the mark of the beast. We do have a national ID. It is called a passport. However not everyone is required to get one. Employers do check for documents. However they are not policemen or immigration officers. Social security numbers are often sold. Many Hispanics have the same last name (Garcia, Gonzalez, Sanchez, Rodriguez, etc) which makes it even harder for employers to verify if someone's papers are fake or not. A national id with a picture, thumb print and magnetic strip would make it almost impossible for illegals to get fake documents. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... K Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Wouldn't it solve both of our problems if you had to plug a SSN in a computer and then either scan someone's retina or make them put their thumb print into the computer. It would be pretty hard to fake the thumb or the retina scan. Oh and please dont mention the word passport. . . . We know that they are inudated right now with requests. Can you imagine if we did the passport as a national ID. Now that is kind of scarey. What is your thought of the rental property owners in Farmer's Branch now having to police their potential renters for legality. Quote Proverbs 15:15 He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.
Dr. Shane Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 I don't think landlords should have to verify legal status at all. That is only going to lead to racial discrimination as a means to avoid accidentally renting to an illegal. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Amelia Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 You have to provide legal status for many things, why not for renting? I don't see any discrimination at all. Oh well, unless you mean discriminaion against illegals? Mexicans aren't the only illegals in this country, just the most visable. K Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 I am a landlord. I would stop renting to anyone with an accent. I had a brother and a sister with nice cars, SSN, hard working, both had jobs, but I think that one of their full time guests that moved in without my permission was not legal. My contract was not with the person who I suspected as illegal, but with the people I thought were legal. I wonder what the law in Farmer's Branch would do with me. Quote Proverbs 15:15 He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

REDWOOD: There is nothing wrong with withholding privileges from someone who is deceiving you in trying to obtain them. If the landlord discriminates against someone who is legally here then they should be liable though. Originally Posted By: k I am a landlord. I would stop renting to anyone with an accent. Norman Byers, N.D. Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Hi K, Quote: I am a landlord. I would stop renting to anyone with an accent. Denise and I rent out a home and I would not rent to any person regardless of race, who is illegal. Several reason: 1st, Rom 13:1 Everyone must obey state authorities, because no authority exists without God's permission, and the existing authorities have been put there by God. 2nd, I have neighbors who are law abiding and good people, what kind of a witness would I have by renting to illegals? Folks, illegals act somewhat different than legals that is just fact and I would not want it to be known that I am renting to an illegal and have that detroy my witness for Christ 3rd, This is from a business aspect; if they wrecked my house and left, I would have no recourse to recover my expenditures. 4th, I have no way of knowing who they are or what they have done. I cannot do a background check. Those are some of the reasons why I would not rent to illegals from any country, even from my own country, Canada. This also means that I must obey the speed limit or else I have just become a hypocrit. Norman Quote The unconditional pardon of sin never has been, and never will be. PP 522

Dr. Shane Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 An illegal can buy a fake Social Security Card that belongs to an American citizen named Frank Gonzalez. Along with that fake SS card he gets a fake birth certificate and a fake driver license. Now Frank Gonzalez is a real person and an American-born citizen. So when Señor Illegal shows up asking for a job and to rent an apartment with his picture on the fake driver license and Frank Gonzalez's name, SS card and birth certificate, how is a landlord or employer going to know if the applicant is the real Frank Gonzalez? Now lets consider the national ID. Mr. Señor somehow gets a fake national ID with his picture and thumb print on it. The employer swipes the magnetic strip through his credit card machine so that Visa or Mastercard can verify and instantly he knows it is fake. If somehow they were high-tech enough to get Frank Gonzales' information encoded into the magnetic strip the computer would prompt the employer to call for verification since the Voice of Prophecy in Riverside, California is paying the SS withholdings for Frank Gonzalez and Señor Illegal is in Houston, Texas trying to get a job. The national ID will stop illegal immigration immediately. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

K Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 How am I going to be able to check the status of those who rent from me. If you can give me a guaranteed way to check people's status, then I won't have to worry. There is no way to date to check a person's citizenship as a landlord. Please don't tell me the SSN. It is a thriving business to get SSNs to illegals in Texas. Quote Proverbs 15:15 He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

IF that is true, then it is as I have said...Americans are not willing to spend money to do the background check. Amelia Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Actually the ID is good; for the person it actually belongs to. It's the illegal person who is the fake. K Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 I agree with Amelia. It doesn't matter if you check because they probably have a real person's ID. Once again, would I be discriminating if I only checked certain people's background. It seems like you check everyone to be fair, or you make use other things to choose not to rent. One of my things that I won't do is rent to a person who is not married to the other person. They may have been living together for 10 years, but the past 20 years of experience tells me that when they split up. . . . the woman ends up in the rental unable to pay.
