"what we believe is the truth"

Sometimes, i postulate, peoples' feelings are much more important than what we might happen to consider 'the truth.' Why? Because when peoples feelings hurt, avenues to their hearts and minds are blocked off. We lose access to those people when we hurt them. So I hope I have hurt no one. I don't know how I come across on the screen, probably stiff, pedantic and mean. :(

This message might better be accomplished in a PM. After all it is just the request of one individual member speaking. As far as I know there are no rules that this request needs to be followed.

If I am wrong about this then maybe someone can correct me. I am new here.

I actually would be interested in hearing a bit of exposition on the 'two toxic faiths', Ed.

It's not just the request of a member but the owner/creator/admin of CA stating what he doesn't want to happen in this thread.

Redwood, as you have requested that John317 refrain from picking apart you and your posts, I am now requesting that you refrain from continualy picking at John317. Plus I am requesting that you also refrain from making sweeping generalizations of all moderators. This repeated pendantic reference to "controlling moderators" hurts everyone and makes you just as judgemental as you say John317 etal are.

This might better be done in a private message. Thanks.

Permit me, mein herr, to make a comment about that. Being of the persuasion, 'Live and let live,' and having had first-hand exposure to and experience with a wide variety of religious faiths, and indeed lack thereof, I should like to postulate that most religious faiths are not inherently 'toxic.' I should like to invite the participation of D.Allan on this point (the 'dallan' [which is far better than being the 'red comyn'] ), if he so desires. It is not the religions themselves, it is certain practitioners. And that can apply to ANY faith. While I recognize the importance of 'truth,' I believe there are still to be found in so many faiths, some truly wonderful human beings. For example, my friend Muhammed, who is from Pakistan, and a Muslim. He is one of the kindest, nicest people I have ever known. My friend Paul, a lifelong Roman Catholic, is one of the most giving, most charitable persons I have experienced. I could go on and on. No, if there is anything that makes a religion toxic--whatever the religion--it is how particular practitioners may present and apply it.

D. Allan, I'm sure your personality is as David says (like a teddy bear with class)... but it's your picture (well, your avatar) that sends me into outer space! :)

I predict you're really every bit as intelligent as Einstein.... but, do you have to have his hairstyle!!?

Thanks for that explanation, David. I'm not sure Ed was speaking of religious faiths specifically though: and since he has disparaged those who make assumptions and refuses to elucidate despite a polite request, I guess we'll never know.

Grr, the no-edit policy strikes again. I wanted to change the above to say 'has chosen not to elucidate', which seemed fairer to me on reflection.

Just changed the edit time to 6 hours..

We used to have a problem with a couple of people, they would significantly change their post after someone had responded, making the responder look like they were, well, wacko...

Hopefully those days are over..

I did not disparage 'those who make assumptions,' only the act of making assumptions. It is, after all. almost always a mistake.

As far as elucidating goes, it does not seem wise to do so here. When someone starts shooting at a target before they can clearly see it, that indicates an eagerness for combat that I do not think should be encouraged.

While I agree with the above statement that wonderful people can be found in ANY faiths, I have found it to be expedient to remember those infamous words:

My esteemed colleague Bravus expressed interest in the issue of 'toxic faiths.' I'm wondering if that might be an interesting discussion topic in its own right? Particularly in view of the stated purposes and parameters of this thread. At any rate, I will start a new thread dedicated to that specific issue.

Ack, you're absolutely right, Ed - I misspoke (on the bit I didn't even think to try to edit). You did not disparage a person but an action, and I should have captured that accurately.

And thanx, Stan - now at least I'll have 6 hours for my brain to try to engage!

Why, thank you, Dave, for that charming invitation. You, however, I feel, have stated the facts of the matter quite well.

As you know, I find that many non-Christian faiths are quite admirable. Whatever one's religion it is the practice of it that determines if it is toxic or not? Or lack of practice? I'm not sure that there is not something more to it than that.

Toxic religion could be defined as use of religion that makes one or others sick. Is it contagious? Much to think about here. Like you said, "if there is anything that makes a religion toxic--whatever the religion--it is how particular practitioners may present and apply it." I've a feeling it is contagious!
