Outta Here Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Aubrey/Cricket no longer sees a valid, positive, uplifting reason for posting at Adventist Forums/Club Adventist. Thank you for spending time with me over the past 6 years, but it's time for me to move on. Blessings to you all. Fare well. Quote

Key Guy Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Before you leave, Aubrey/Cricket, please consider that the postings of one or two areas of the Forum are not the whole Forum. There are also areas that are informative and some even address hobbies and interests, allowing for the making of new friends and deepening existing friendships. If you still find there is not enough to keep you involved, please travel life's highway with my blessings and good wishes! KG Quote

Key Guy Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 I am convinced the political forum drives people away from here. Although you are probably right, there's no need for anyone to leave. It's like saying, I'm going to stop watching TV because of CSPAN. There are so many other areas of the Forum to enjoy. Just because I don't understand Hebrew or Greek and cannot discuss the depths of the original Bible manuscripts, I cannot see that as an excuse to leave the Forum. I choose to be involved in those areas that interest me and that I can learn from or share in. Quote

Dr. Shane Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Those that are driven away ... are apparently just lookin' for an excuse ... something to blame.Like you say ... thye don't have to click on that which they don't like. The problem is that people go into the politics forum that simply do not have the mentality needed to discuss politics. They are completely unprepared for people to disagree with them. They go in, post their opinion, and then get offended when someone disagrees with them. Politics is a hot area of discussion. If a person is going to run into a burning building they need to be wearing fireproof clothing. Too many people go into that forum and come out feeling beat up and abused. Making it a private forum is probably a good idea. Of course, we need to keep the word out for new members that if they wish to read or discuss politics the forum is available but... of course... it is a hot forum and not everyone plays well with others. Key Guy Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Shane, I couldn't disagree with you more!!! What is wrong with you? How can you possibly say that the politics section is too hot?!? Are you daft, sir??!! Nobody gets beat up if they post a differing opinion. That's just crazy! Your comments are so 'out there' that I just shake my head in disgust. NOBODY could possibly be that sensitive. Besides, the Politics threads are models of tolerance and respect. Everybody knows that. You are soooo naive, I can't believe it. (totally tongue in cheek)... Sounds defeatist to me. I believe there is NO reason why we can have a politics forum that abides by the rules that have been established. There are just a few here that have no desire to ablide by rules. Those individuals need to be dealt with. Perhaps we need two politics forums. One that abides by the rules and one that is free wheeling and feels free to attack the individuals. I can tell you that I have no desire to be in the one that does not abide by the rules . So, can we have two areas ... one that portrays Christians values and one that doesn't? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Moderators Bravus Posted May 5, 2009 Moderators Posted May 5, 2009 Rules are all very well, but they require moderators to enforce them. And quite simply, no-one is willing to put their head in the hornet's nest by moderating the Politics forum. Impasse. Quote Truth is important
Woody Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 That's all fine and dandy. But you can have one forum where people can go and be sent to duke it out. And another one where people are expected to behave. A forum should be able to self moderate. IOWs ... when a person notices that things are getting heated .... the suggestion to those who are heated should be to leave. It is usually pretty obvious. Admin. and Moderators do stick their heads in on occasions. The situation with Bonnie and Neil was obvious to all observers. Don't take a rocket scientist. It has been stated that the politics forum has no rules. So ... why should one behave. It is expected to have bad behaviour. But on the other hand ... if you have rules and expect it ... good behaviour can be encouraged or enforced. Why do we have moderators anywhere if they are afraid to moderate. What is their purpose. IF they can't step in for something obvious like what Bonnie and Neil were doing ... then yes ... they are worthless. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Moderators Bravus Posted May 5, 2009 Moderators Posted May 5, 2009 Moderators are assigned to a particular forum. They are not expected to moderate the entire board, and in fact it would be considered quite rude if a moderator moderated in 'someone else's' forum. The Politics forum was set up without a moderator as an experiment, and (I think) also because no-one was willing to be the moderator, as I said above. In my opinion the experiment has failed: it seems pretty clear that people *won't* choose to self-moderate, or at least that what people consider inappropriate in others they will excuse in themselves. I'd like to believe it can happen, but all the evidence we have is to the contrary. Perhaps if we can see the evidence across all forums that people can live in harmony and courtesy with one another, we won't lose any more good people... Quote Truth is important
Woody Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 I agree that it has failed. But then there were no rules. And when it was suggested that people abide by rules ... that was just laughed at. It was like ... "hey this is why we come here ... because there ARE NO rules." Don't seem fair to set up a test where there are no rules. Obviously you have to have some type of outline as to what you want to see as far as behaviour or you will get what we have now. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Moderators Bravus Posted May 5, 2009 Moderators Posted May 5, 2009 I guess that experiment could be tried, but still, without a moderator I suspect it's just going to turn into a maelstrom of people quoting the rules at one another... Quote Truth is important
Moderators Bravus Posted May 5, 2009 Moderators Posted May 5, 2009 BTW As far as I know the rules still don't really have formal status over the whole of this site, do they? Last I heard they were a discussion draft. I could be wrong, but I think they're more suggestions and guidelines than laws, at least at this stage. Quote Truth is important
