Music like this was considered the 'devil's music' by the religious folks in town... and they wondered why we did had no interest in following their ways...

THE GC president issued a warning about using this melody for a Christian Song.

The Seekers sang some really good Christian songs.

I was a teen-ager when those songs were popular and remember them well. The SDAs in Loma Linda never said anything against them.

A guy once told me that "A Bridge Over Troubled Waters" was what brought him to Christ.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

bridge over troubled waters is an ode to heroin and shooting up. junkies do feel like it is a bridge over troubled waters. unfortunately they do feel a peace coming over them as temporary as the feeling is. ive known a few. it pays to kinda pay attention to what the authors say about their music.

sorry to burst any bubbles.

i am a rocknroll addict and i struggle when i go into stores and its playing. it sucks me right back into that lifestyle-im not talking about drugs, but partying- and mindset, so i have a bit different slant on the whole thing than some here might have.

drugs and drinking were a big part of that lifestyle in that era of celebrities. i remember janice joslyn oding. several died.

for many drugs and drinking is still part of the "scene".

Glad that you came out from that scene, Teresa. Many have been spiritually slain by wrong music.

Stan sometimes I wonder if it was more the song writers themselves that they had an issue with. If that was the case than they should've checked out the classical writers background as well.

Yeah teresaq so was I, but I never got into drinking, partying, smoking, doing any drugs. I did enjoy listening to that music. And yes now when I look back I realize that lots of that music glorified drugs, etc. But also many wrote about there experience's also and how it effected them and others. Those are the ones that I really admired, not as an idol or anything like that. But that they were able to get themselves back up on there feet.

Music is very powerful. That is why corporate America uses it in commercials to sell us everything from cleaners and clothing to vacations and junk food.

I take no issue with any kind of music. I take issue with individual songs that have objective lyrics. The great thing about MP3 technology is that we can now just buy individual songs. I love some of the classic songs by the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and other such artists. But I read through the lyrics before buying the song and ask myself if that is something I want to be feeding my brain.

Sorry to burst that apocryphal bubble... But the author of this song, Paul Simon, explained the "silver girl" line this way, "My girlfriend at the time was particularly saddened upon finding a few grey hairs in her brush, lamenting that she was getting older. I wrote that lyric as a tribute and inside joke to her. I don't know how the heroin connection rumor got started. The song is basically about friendship."

Far too much is often read into many lyrics, reflecting the mind and experiences of listeners more than of the author.

Another fine example is the much speculated about song and personal favorite of mine, Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. All manner of bizarre meanings have been read into that one. But the simple and obvious meaning is overlooked. One explanation I read from a friend and neighbor of Robert Plant who said that "because it was only written in 20 minutes, there was no great thought put into the lyrics - other than it refers to a rich woman who feels she can buy anything or buy her way out of any trouble. Eventually, though, we all have to 'pay the piper' - or pay for our misdeeds/ excesses in life." Seems to make sense to me.

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

Tom

really?

listening to the words and knowing junkies, which i did at the time, might deny that.

but i doubt ill convince anyone.

one would have to have seen what ive seen and been where ive been and most, especially sdas, have led "sheltered" lives, quite apart and distant from what goes on in this world.

i know too many who are now dead.

You don't know where everyone on this board has been.

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

it seemed to me like they were the ones with the devils...

and i certainly did not want their life. still dont. smiley hope i get this christian thing down soon.

did not mean that i had made any assumption about all. it means "most" and it "means especially sdas", but it does not mean each and everyone.

then you should have said "many" - not "most".....you have no way of knowing *most*....

Well, let's throw a wrench into this discussion:

Can God reach people through non-traditional means? (re: the Simon and Garfunkel song) IOW Can God override what might have been meant for evil? I find that an interesting concept, but I've heard of it being done.

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

I do believe also that music is a powerful medium. What might not affect one person will haul another down. Music speaks to the heart. It would be wise to be aware of what is happening inside of our hearts in certain situations and seek the Lord for help when we feel things are not heading heavenward. God is a present help When things start to slide.

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
