I remember when..

Another question I've often asked is if an artist is creating something on purpose or is merely expressing what is inside of him. I'm not sure if art is a "putting in" of creativity or a "letting out" of it.

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Who are the Seekers, anyway? :)

I know who the Cat Scratch fever guy is, but was never a fan.

Gail, are you serious beg

Then again, maybe you were not listening to popular music

when they were around. I heard Judith Durham on the radio just a few months ago, she has put out an a capella album. She is/was one of my favourite female singers but perhaps this is not such a wise move, her voice does not have the quality of the old days.

The Seekers managed to keep their image clean as far as I remember, and went their own ways after only a few years.

I remember the first song shown as "The Sheep's Lament".

Okay :)

I do remember some Aussie singer back then (yes, I was just a young'un). It was the "Tie me Kangaroo Down, Sport" guy- was his name Rolf Harris?

then you should have said "many" - not "most".....you have no way of knowing *most*....

I do believe also that music is a powerful medium. What might not affect one person will haul another down. Music speaks to the heart. It would be wise to be aware of what is happening inside of our hearts in certain situations and seek the Lord for help when we feel things are not heading heavenward. God is a present help When things start to slide.
yes, i dont really get into whether people should listen to rock or not, or whatever the various names its called by. each person has to decide for him/herself.

that particular song on the other page brought up a lot of memories and i just shared what i know or have experienced.

im too close to 60 now and have associated with different groups of people, thankfully mostly on the fringes with some. oh so thankfully. one group i stayed away from after i was sitting in someones living room and they were planning someones murder.

that group had gone from fairly "innocent" shrug, just beating people to more mafia.

what does this have to do with music? it is all very closely related.

as to whether God can use some means He may disapprove of i would say yes. i remember watching a "mad max" movie one time because i was too lazy to get up and turn the channel. i understood for the first time what satan would do to our earth given the chance.

i think i was mostly trying to share that for some of us certain kinds of music can be as much a snare as having just one drink is for an alcoholic. im thinking of the move to bring those types of music into the church.

in my case the last thing i think of when i hear it is God. memories come back and i want to go dancing.

but now i think i will leave this topic and let those who wish enjoy their walk down memory lane. whether there is "innocent" music in this area i can not speak to, nor argue over.

I can relate to what you are saying, teresa. With me, it was Led Zepplin's song, Kashmir. I was not a Christian, didn't know that the devil could have music, and one day while listening to that I found it too hypnotic for me. That was when I realised that music could have a spiritual effect upon me.

I don't know if anyone complained about a similar effect with the Seeker's music or not...

"hypnotic" is a very good word, my sister.

i have to resist being "pulled in" and going back to that lifestyle. the lifestyle of minus Jesus and an interest for spiritual things.

that is a very appropriate word.

folk music was supposed to be okay for some of the church crowd. i dont know.

im just sharing my own perspective folks so please dont feel judged or condemned but what i say now. i mean dont feel as if im saying "nobody should..."

a lot of folk music doesnt make sense. it seems to me that if we dont know what someone is talking about....

I find it true in my case that "where I came from" makes a weakness or a sensibility to that genre. I appreciate a point of view from someone who has already walked that road. God can take that person and use them for good out of the experience that s/he has.

A person with such an experience is a great blessing to me- a big help. He or she can help bear up another who is struggling like no one else can.

Who are the Seekers, anyway? :)

The Seekers were easily the most popular folk quartet to come out of the southern hemisphere. To this day they hold the record for a concert attendance (Meyer Music Bowl) in 1968. They knocked the Rolling Stones and the Beatles off of top of the the charts in England back in the 60's.

Judith Durham has arguably the purest female vocals of any folk singer - wayy better than Mary Travers. Elton John said there were three perfect female voices and two of them were dead. Karen Carpenter, Judith Durham & Eva Cassidy

I don't remember any of those, because I wasn't born until at least 20 years after all of those people.

And looking back to only a few decades ago, I cannot fathom why anyone would willingly listen to that kind of music. Or have hair like that. Or dress like that.

I knew that Rock-n-Roll was the devils music from a very young age. My dad had some sermons on tape by a fellow who used to be in the recording industry and got out. Those tapes were amazing, the things he told. I wish I still had them.

Anyway I was into Rock-n-Roll and learning to play the electric guitar. The years went by and I forgot about the tapes for the most part, but it was still in the back of my head. I finally got good at it and ended up playing in some rock and roll bands in the different nightclubs and what not.

I eventually put together a home recording studio. I figured as long as I was the one making the music, and doing the recording, then the record companies could not put a spell on my music. This is what the guy said happens in the recording industry, that it is totally satanic. To make a long story short, I have fairly recently come back to the faith I was raised in. I now have all this equipment, and nothing to do with it. I rarely even play anymore because my interest now is in studying the Bible and getting ready for Jesus to come. That's my short testimony about music.

Far too much is often read into many lyrics, reflecting the mind and experiences of listeners more than of the author.

Tom

Amen, Tom,

Reminds me of a particular Word.

"To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled."Titus 1:15 NKJV

Many of those who are looked at askance for association guilt are pushed over the edge by this Word in their lives.

"And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”" Matthew 9:11 NKJV

Praise God, Jesus' view is not so narrow.

"When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”"

Matthew 9:12-14 NKJV

and i certainly did not want their life. still dont. smiley hope i get this christian thing down soon.

The very fact that we walk around with trillions of individual body parts, down to the size of atoms and below, that work efficiently until we (mankind) do something that makes them misfire, is proof enough that we serve a God of love that allows us freewill to live or to die.

"And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”" Joshua 24:15 NKJV

Well, let's throw a wrench into this discussion:

Can God reach people through non-traditional means? (re: the Simon and Garfunkel song) IOW Can God override what might have been meant for evil? I find that an interesting concept, but I've heard of it being done.

And I'm sure you've heard this before, Gail, but just in case someone else chooses to believe the Word reveals love, even in the most dire circumstances, here is the proof.

"He sent a man before them—Joseph—who was sold as a slave."Psalm 105:17 NKJV

" Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them."Genesis 50:19-21 NKJV

Brings back some real nostalgic moments. I ran into one with Steve Ervine also that was of more recent vintage. Makes one realize and hunger for when ___

"...God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”"Revelation 21:4 NKJV
