Psalm 23 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Proclaim God’s Love and Mercy

Introduction

Psalm 23: God’s kingship is a frequent subject in the psalms. Kings were known as the shepherds of their people. Their responsibility was to feed and protect their people. In Psalm 23, God is described as providing food, drink, guidance, and protection.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 23:1

The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need.

Today’s Reading

1 The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need. 2 He lets me rest in fields of green grass and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water. 3 He gives me new strength. He guides me in the right paths, as he has promised. 4 Even if I go through the deepest darkness, I will not be afraid, LORD, for you are with me. Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me. 5 You prepare a banquet for me, where all my enemies can see me; you welcome me as an honored guest and fill my cup to the brim. 6 I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life; and your house will be my home as long as I live.

Reflect

Psalm 23 is a much beloved psalm that many have committed to memory. It has been reported that a child who was asked to memorize this psalm said it this way: “The LORD is my shepherd, and that’s all I need to know.” This psalm conveys complete trust in God. What verses in this psalm particularly resonate with you?

Pray

Because you, Lord, are my shepherd, I have everything I need. Your goodness, mercy, and love are always with me. I will dwell in your presence my whole life long. Amen.

Psalm 51 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Proclaim God’s Love and Mercy

Introduction

Psalm 51: Today’s reading is a psalm asking for God’s forgiveness and is attributed to King David. After David had arranged to have Uriah killed in battle so that he could marry Bathsheba, who was pregnant with David’s child, the prophet Nathan confronted David with his sin.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 51:1

Be merciful to me, O God, because of your constant love. Because of your great mercy wipe away my sins!

Today’s Reading

1 Be merciful to me, O God, because of your constant love. Because of your great mercy wipe away my sins! 2 Wash away all my evil and make me clean from my sin! 3 I recognize my faults; I am always conscious of my sins. 4 I have sinned against you—only against you— and done what you consider evil. So you are right in judging me; you are justified in condemning me. 5 I have been evil from the day I was born; from the time I was conceived, I have been sinful. 6 Sincerity and truth are what you require; fill my mind with your wisdom. 7 Remove my sin, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear the sounds of joy and gladness; and though you have crushed me and broken me, I will be happy once again. 9 Close your eyes to my sins and wipe out all my evil. 10 Create a pure heart in me, O God, and put a new and loyal spirit in me. 11 Do not banish me from your presence; do not take your holy spirit away from me. 12 Give me again the joy that comes from your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. 13 Then I will teach sinners your commands, and they will turn back to you. 14 Spare my life, O God, and save me, and I will gladly proclaim your righteousness. 15 Help me to speak, Lord, and I will praise you. 16 You do not want sacrifices, or I would offer them; you are not pleased with burnt offerings. 17 My sacrifice is a humble spirit, O God; you will not reject a humble and repentant heart. 18 O God, be kind to Zion and help her; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then you will be pleased with proper sacrifices and with our burnt offerings; and bulls will be sacrificed on your altar.

Reflect

How would you describe the tone of David’s prayer? What does he confess? What does he ask of God? Can this prayer serve as a model of confession for you? What do you need to confess to God today?

Pray

Be merciful to me, O God, because of your constant love, and wipe away all my sins. Create a pure heart in me and put a new and loyal spirit in me. Keep me forever in your presence so that I may know the joy that comes only from you and your salvation. In your holy name I pray, Amen. Those in need of God’s forgiveness

John 13:1-20 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Proclaim God’s Love and Mercy

Introduction

John 13:1-20: In ancient Jewish society, it was the duty of the servant to wash the master’s feet. In today’s reading, Jesus takes on the role of servant and washes his disciples’ feet. The reading concludes with Jesus alluding to his betrayal and identifying himself with the Divine Name (“I Am”).

Today’s Scripture: John 13:14

“I, your Lord and Teacher, have just washed your feet. You, then, should wash one another’s feet.”

Today’s Reading

1 It was now the day before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. He had always loved those in the world who were his own, and he loved them to the very end. 2 Jesus and his disciples were at supper. The Devil had already put into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, the thought of betraying Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had given him complete power; he knew that he had come from God and was going to God. 4 So he rose from the table, took off his outer garment, and tied a towel around his waist. 5 Then he poured some water into a washbasin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Are you going to wash my feet, Lord?” 7 Jesus answered him, “You do not understand now what I am doing, but you will understand later.” 8 Peter declared, “Never at any time will you wash my feet!” “If I do not wash your feet,” Jesus answered, “you will no longer be my disciple.” 9 Simon Peter answered, “Lord, do not wash only my feet, then! Wash my hands and head, too!” 10 Jesus said, “Those who have taken a bath are completely clean and do not have to wash themselves, except for their feet. All of you are clean—all except one. ” ( 11 Jesus already knew who was going to betray him; that is why he said, “All of you, except one, are clean.”) 12 After Jesus had washed their feet, he put his outer garment back on and returned to his place at the table. “Do you understand what I have just done to you?” he asked. 13 “You call me Teacher and Lord, and it is right that you do so, because that is what I am. 14 I, your Lord and Teacher, have just washed your feet. You, then, should wash one another's feet. 15 I have set an example for you, so that you will do just what I have done for you. 16 I am telling you the truth: no slaves are greater than their master, and no messengers are greater than the one who sent them. 17 Now that you know this truth, how happy you will be if you put it into practice! 18 I am not talking about all of you; I know those I have chosen. But the scripture must come true that says, “The man who shared my food turned against me.” 19 I tell you this now before it happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe that “I Am Who I Am.” 20 I am telling you the truth: whoever receives anyone I send receives me also; and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. ”

Reflect

Why did Jesus choose foot washing as a way to teach his disciples about what it means to serve one another? Whose “feet” will you wash today?

Pray

Lord Jesus, by your example you have taught us what it means to serve one another. Give me a humble heart and open my eyes this day to those in need of love and care. In your holy name, I pray. Amen.

John 13:21-35 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Proclaim God’s Love and Mercy

Introduction

John 13:21-35: Jesus predicts his betrayal by Judas, and he gives his disciples a new commandment about loving one another.

Today’s Scripture: John 13:34

“And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

Today’s Reading

21 After Jesus had said this, he was deeply troubled and declared openly, “I am telling you the truth: one of you is going to betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, completely puzzled about whom he meant. 23 One of the disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was sitting next to Jesus. 24 Simon Peter motioned to him and said, “Ask him whom he is talking about.” 25 So that disciple moved closer to Jesus' side and asked, “Who is it, Lord?” 26 Jesus answered, “I will dip some bread in the sauce and give it to him; he is the man.” So he took a piece of bread, dipped it, and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “Hurry and do what you must!” 28 None of the others at the table understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas was in charge of the money bag, some of the disciples thought that Jesus had told him to go and buy what they needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. 30 Judas accepted the bread and went out at once. It was night. 31 After Judas had left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man's glory is revealed; now God's glory is revealed through him. 32 And if God's glory is revealed through him, then God will reveal the glory of the Son of Man in himself, and he will do so at once. 33 My children, I shall not be with you very much longer. You will look for me; but I tell you now what I told the Jewish authorities, “You cannot go where I am going.” 34 And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 If you have love for one another, then everyone will know that you are my disciples. ”

Reflect

In yesterday’s reading (John 13:1-20) we learned from Jesus’ example what it means to serve one another. In today’s reading, Jesus gives a new commandment to love one another in the same way that he has shown his love for people. How do you make known to others Jesus’ love for you? What loving acts of service will you do today?

Pray

Lord Jesus, remind me every day of your new commandment to love others as you have loved me. May my words and actions reflect your love for me and make visible a love for others. In your holy name, I pray. Amen.

John 14:1-31 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Proclaim God’s Love and Mercy

Introduction

John 14:1-31: Today’s reading begins a section in John’s Gospel referred to as the “Farewell Discourse,” in which Jesus gives final instructions to his disciples before he is arrested, tried, and put to death. Jesus promises to prepare a place for all his followers and tells them that he is the way to God the Father. He promises to send the Holy Spirit to teach and guide them.

Today’s Scripture: John 14:6

Jesus answered him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one goes to the Father except by me.”

Today’s Reading

1 “Do not be worried and upset,” Jesus told them. Believe in God and believe also in me. 2 There are many rooms in my Father's house, and I am going to prepare a place for you. I would not tell you this if it were not so. 3 And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to myself, so that you will be where I am. 4 You know the way that leads to the place where I am going. ” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; so how can we know the way to get there?” 6 Jesus answered him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one goes to the Father except by me. 7 Now that you have known me, ” he said to them, “you will know my Father also, and from now on you do know him and you have seen him. ” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father; that is all we need.” 9 Jesus answered, “For a long time I have been with you all; yet you do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. Why, then, do you say, “Show us the Father”? 10 Do you not believe, Philip, that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I have spoken to you, ” Jesus said to his disciples, “do not come from me. The Father, who remains in me, does his own work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. If not, believe because of the things I do. 12 I am telling you the truth: those who believe in me will do what I do—yes, they will do even greater things, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask for in my name, so that the Father's glory will be shown through the Son. 14 If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it. 15 If you love me, you will obey my commandments. 16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God. The world cannot receive him, because it cannot see him or know him. But you know him, because he remains with you and is in you. 18 When I go, you will not be left all alone; I will come back to you. 19 In a little while the world will see me no more, but you will see me; and because I live, you also will live. 20 When that day comes, you will know that I am in my Father and that you are in me, just as I am in you. 21 “Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. My Father will love those who love me; I too will love them and reveal myself to them.” 22 Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “Lord, how can it be that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, Those who love me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and my Father and I will come to them and live with them. 24 Those who do not love me do not obey my teaching. And the teaching you have heard is not mine, but comes from the Father, who sent me. 25 I have told you this while I am still with you. 26 The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you. 27 Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, “I am leaving, but I will come back to you.” If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father; for he is greater than I. 29 I have told you this now before it all happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe. 30 I cannot talk with you much longer, because the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me, 31 but the world must know that I love the Father; that is why I do everything as he commands me. Come, let us go from this place.

Reflect

Today’s reading includes another of the “I Am” passages (verse 6). Reflect on the words “way, truth, and life.” What do they mean to you and your relationship with Jesus? How do you understand the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life? In what ways does the Holy Spirit teach and guide you?

Pray

Holy Jesus, you are the way, the truth, and the life. You have sent the Holy Spirit to teach and guide me in the way of truth. I trust in all your promises, knowing that one day I will dwell with you in the place you have prepared for me. Amen.

John 15:1-17 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Proclaim God’s Love and Mercy

Introduction

John 15:1-17: God’s people are sometimes described as a vineyard (see Isaiah 5:1-7; Jeremiah 2:21; Ezekiel 19:10-14; Hosea 10:1). Jesus identifies himself as the real vine and his followers as branches connected to the vine. Jesus tells his followers to remain in him so that they bear fruit that endures. Today’s reading concludes with Jesus repeating his command to love one another.

Today’s Scripture: John 15:5

“I am the vine, and you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me.”

Today’s Reading

1 I am the real vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He breaks off every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and he prunes every branch that does bear fruit, so that it will be clean and bear more fruit. 3 You have been made clean already by the teaching I have given you. 4 Remain united to me, and I will remain united to you. A branch cannot bear fruit by itself; it can do so only if it remains in the vine. In the same way you cannot bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine, and you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me. 6 Those who do not remain in me are thrown out like a branch and dry up; such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, where they are burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, then you will ask for anything you wish, and you shall have it. 8 My Father's glory is shown by your bearing much fruit; and in this way you become my disciples. 9 I love you just as the Father loves me; remain in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My commandment is this: love one another, just as I love you. 13 The greatest love you can have for your friends is to give your life for them. 14 And you are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants any longer, because servants do not know what their master is doing. Instead, I call you friends, because I have told you everything I heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me; I chose you and appointed you to go and bear much fruit, the kind of fruit that endures. And so the Father will give you whatever you ask of him in my name. 17 This, then, is what I command you: love one another.

Reflect

Today’s reading includes another of the “I Am” sayings of Jesus (verses 1, 5). Is the image of vine and branches a good metaphor for a community of faith? Why or why not? Why does Jesus say that we are to stay connected to him (the vine)? What “fruit” will you bear today?q

Pray

Lord Jesus, you are the real vine, and we are the branches. You have called us your friends. Keep me close to you so that I remain in your love as a fruitful disciple. Amen.

John 15:18—16:15 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Proclaim God’s Love and Mercy

Introduction

John 15:18—16:15: Jesus warns his disciples that they will be hated and suffer persecution because they have chosen to believe in and follow him. Jesus says that he is returning to God the Father but that he will send the Holy Spirit who will lead them and reveal the truth about God.

Today’s Scripture: John 16:15

“All that my Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit will take what I give him and tell it to you.”

Today’s Reading

18 If the world hates you, just remember that it has hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, then the world would love you as its own. But I chose you from this world, and you do not belong to it; that is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: “Slaves are not greater than their master.” If people persecuted me, they will persecute you too; if they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours too. 21 But they will do all this to you because you are mine; for they do not know the one who sent me. 22 They would not have been guilty of sin if I had not come and spoken to them; as it is, they no longer have any excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 They would not have been guilty of sin if I had not done among them the things that no one else ever did; as it is, they have seen what I did, and they hate both me and my Father. 25 This, however, was bound to happen so that what is written in their Law may come true: “They hated me for no reason at all.” 26 The Helper will come—the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God and who comes from the Father. I will send him to you from the Father, and he will speak about me. 27 And you, too, will speak about me, because you have been with me from the very beginning. 1 I have told you this, so that you will not give up your faith. 2 You will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time will come when those who kill you will think that by doing this they are serving God. 3 People will do these things to you because they have not known either the Father or me. 4 But I have told you this, so that when the time comes for them to do these things, you will remember what I told you. I did not tell you these things at the beginning, for I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me where I am going. 6 And now that I have told you, your hearts are full of sadness. 7 But I am telling you the truth: it is better for you that I go away, because if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. But if I do go away, then I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will prove to the people of the world that they are wrong about sin and about what is right and about God's judgment. 9 They are wrong about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 they are wrong about what is right, because I am going to the Father and you will not see me any more; 11 and they are wrong about judgment, because the ruler of this world has already been judged. 12 I have much more to tell you, but now it would be too much for you to bear. 13 When, however, the Spirit comes, who reveals the truth about God, he will lead you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own authority, but he will speak of what he hears and will tell you of things to come. 14 He will give me glory, because he will take what I say and tell it to you. 15 All that my Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit will take what I give him and tell it to you.

Reflect

What are your thoughts concerning Jesus’ words to his disciples? Are these words hard to hear? Why or why not? Does today’s reading contain any words of reassurance? What does today’s reading teach about the cost of discipleship? Are you aware of anyone who has been persecuted for his or her faith?

Pray

Dear Jesus, keep me close to you and strong in faith. You are my Lord and Savior, and I am your disciple. May I never stray from your teachings. Give me a spirit of boldness to proclaim the good news of your love and salvation. Amen.

John 16:16-33 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Proclaim God’s Love and Mercy

Introduction

John 16:16-33: The disciples are unable to comprehend what Jesus tells them about his impending suffering and death. Jesus tells them that they will be sad for awhile, but that their sadness will turn into gladness.

Today’s Scripture: John 16:33b

“The world will make you suffer. But be brave! I have defeated the world!”

Today’s Reading

16 “In a little while you will not see me any more, and then a little while later you will see me.” 17 Some of his disciples asked among themselves, What does this mean? He tells us that in a little while we will not see him, and then a little while later we will see him; and he also says, “It is because I am going to the Father.” 18 What does this “a little while” mean? We don't know what he is talking about! ” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said to them, “I said, “In a little while you will not see me, and then a little while later you will see me.” Is this what you are asking about among yourselves? 20 I am telling you the truth: you will cry and weep, but the world will be glad; you will be sad, but your sadness will turn into gladness. 21 When a woman is about to give birth, she is sad because her hour of suffering has come; but when the baby is born, she forgets her suffering, because she is happy that a baby has been born into the world. 22 That is how it is with you: now you are sad, but I will see you again, and your hearts will be filled with gladness, the kind of gladness that no one can take away from you. 23 When that day comes, you will not ask me for anything. I am telling you the truth: the Father will give you whatever you ask of him in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your happiness may be complete. 25 I have used figures of speech to tell you these things. But the time will come when I will not use figures of speech, but will speak to you plainly about the Father. 26 When that day comes, you will ask him in my name; and I do not say that I will ask him on your behalf, 27 for the Father himself loves you. He loves you because you love me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I did come from the Father, and I came into the world; and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father. ” 29 Then his disciples said to him, “Now you are speaking plainly, without using figures of speech. 30 We know now that you know everything; you do not need to have someone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God. ” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now? 32 The time is coming, and is already here, when all of you will be scattered, each of you to your own home, and I will be left all alone. But I am not really alone, because the Father is with me. 33 I have told you this so that you will have peace by being united to me. The world will make you suffer. But be brave! I have defeated the world! ”

Reflect

Jesus uses the image of childbirth to explain the temporary sadness the disciples will experience which will be followed by gladness “that no one can take away” (verses 21, 22). How does Jesus reassure the disciples? What is the victory that Jesus speaks of? In verse 28, Jesus tells the disciples that he is leaving the world and returning to God the Father. He came from God and was sent into the world to make God known (John 1:18; 14:7), and his death and return to God will complete his work (John 17:4; 19:30). How has Jesus revealed God to you?

Pray

Dear Jesus, you suffered and died for my sake, but God raised you to life and you defeated sin and death so that all who believe in you would have eternal life. You have defeated the world and turned sadness into joy – a joy that no one can take away. Thank you, Lord Jesus! Amen.

Mark 12:28-44 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Proclaim God’s Love and Mercy

Introduction

Mark 12:28-44: Jesus is questioned as to what commandment is the most important. Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 6:4, 5 and from Leviticus 19:18 which point to loving God and loving one’s neighbor. Jesus teaches in the Temple, warning the people about the teachers of the Law and their false piety, and he observes a poor widow who gives all she had.

Today’s Scripture: Mark 12:30

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength”.

Today’s Reading

28 A teacher of the Law was there who heard the discussion. He saw that Jesus had given the Sadducees a good answer, so he came to him with a question: “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus replied, “The most important one is this: ‘Listen, Israel! The Lord our God is the only Lord. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. ’ 31 The second most important commandment is this: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” There is no other commandment more important than these two. ” 32 The teacher of the Law said to Jesus, “Well done, Teacher! It is true, as you say, that only the Lord is God and that there is no other god but he. 33 And you must love God with all your heart and with all your mind and with all your strength; and you must love your neighbor as you love yourself. It is more important to obey these two commandments than to offer on the altar animals and other sacrifices to God. ” 34 Jesus noticed how wise his answer was, and so he told him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” After this nobody dared to ask Jesus any more questions. 35 As Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he asked the question, “How can the teachers of the Law say that the Messiah will be the descendant of David? 36 The Holy Spirit inspired David to say: ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit here at my right side until I put your enemies under your feet.’ 37 David himself called him “Lord”; so how can the Messiah be David's descendant? ” A large crowd was listening to Jesus gladly. 38 As he taught them, he said, “Watch out for the teachers of the Law, who like to walk around in their long robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplace, 39 who choose the reserved seats in the synagogues and the best places at feasts. 40 They take advantage of widows and rob them of their homes, and then make a show of saying long prayers. Their punishment will be all the worse! ” 41 As Jesus sat near the Temple treasury, he watched the people as they dropped in their money. Many rich men dropped in a lot of money; 42 then a poor widow came along and dropped in two little copper coins, worth about a penny. 43 He called his disciples together and said to them, “I tell you that this poor widow put more in the offering box than all the others. 44 For the others put in what they had to spare of their riches; but she, poor as she is, put in all she had—she gave all she had to live on. ”

Reflect

Reread verses 29-31. Why are these commandments the most important? Do these two commandments guide the way you live your life? Explain. What did Jesus say about the teachers of the Law (verses 38-40)? Do his words have implications for today? Explain.

Pray

I love you, Lord God, with all my heart, with all my soul, with all my mind, and with all my strength. You alone, Lord, are God and I praise your holy name. Amen.

Psalm 84 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 84: For the entire month of March we will be reading from the book of Psalms, the hymnbook and prayer book of the Bible. The psalms express a broad spectrum of human emotions – sorrow and joy, doubt and trust, pain and comfort, despair and hope, anger and contentment, a desire for revenge and a willingness to forgive. The psalms serve as models for praise and prayer, inviting us to share every part of our lives with God. We begin today with Psalm 84, a psalm that celebrates the joy of being and living in God’s presence.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 84:2b

I long to be in the LORD’s Temple. With my whole being I sing for joy to the living God.

Today’s Reading

1 How I love your Temple, LORD Almighty! 2 How I want to be there! I long to be in the LORD's Temple. With my whole being I sing for joy to the living God. 3 Even the sparrows have built a nest, and the swallows have their own home; they keep their young near your altars, 4 How happy are those who live in your Temple, always singing praise to you. 5 How happy are those whose strength comes from you, who are eager to make the pilgrimage to Mount Zion. 6 As they pass through the dry valley of Baca, it becomes a place of springs; the autumn rain fills it with pools. 7 They grow stronger as they go; they will see the God of gods on Zion. 8 Hear my prayer, LORD God Almighty. Listen, O God of Jacob! 9 Bless our king, O God, the king you have chosen. 10 One day spent in your Temple is better than a thousand anywhere else; I would rather stand at the gate of the house of my God than live in the homes of the wicked. 11 The LORD is our protector and glorious king, blessing us with kindness and honor. He does not refuse any good thing to those who do what is right. 12 LORD Almighty, how happy are those who trust in you!

Reflect

How many times does the word “happy” appear in this psalm? What brings about this happiness? What makes you happy? How is happiness experienced in your community of faith?

Pray

Almighty God, with my whole being I sing for joy and praise your holy name. You are my source of strength, and my joy comes from trusting in you. Amen.

Psalm 80 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 80: The first Friday in March is observed as World Day of Prayer. Today’s psalm is considered a communal lament dating quite possibly back to 722 B.C. following the fall of Samaria (in the northern kingdom of Israel) to the Assyrians (see 2 Kings 17). The psalm expresses a plea to God for the nation’s restoration.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 80:3

Bring us back, LORD God Almighty. Show us your mercy, and we will be saved.

Today’s Reading

1 Listen to us, O Shepherd of Israel; hear us, leader of your flock. Seated on your throne above the winged creatures, 2 reveal yourself to the tribes of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Show us your strength; come and save us! 3 Bring us back, O God! Show us your mercy, and we will be saved! 4 How much longer, LORD God Almighty, will you be angry with your people's prayers? 5 You have given us sorrow to eat, a large cup of tears to drink. 6 You let the surrounding nations fight over our land; our enemies insult us. 7 Bring us back, Almighty God! Show us your mercy, and we will be saved! 8 You brought a grapevine out of Egypt; you drove out other nations and planted it in their land. 9 You cleared a place for it to grow; its roots went deep, and it spread out over the whole land. 10 It covered the hills with its shade; its branches overshadowed the giant cedars. 11 It extended its branches to the Mediterranean Sea and as far as the Euphrates River. 12 Why did you break down the fences around it? Now anyone passing by can steal its grapes; 13 wild hogs trample it down, and wild animals feed on it. 14 Turn to us, Almighty God! Look down from heaven at us; come and save your people! 15 Come and save this grapevine that you planted, this young vine you made grow so strong! 16 Our enemies have set it on fire and cut it down; look at them in anger and destroy them! 17 Preserve and protect the people you have chosen, the nation you made so strong. 18 We will never turn away from you again; keep us alive, and we will praise you. 19 Bring us back, LORD God Almighty. Show us your mercy, and we will be saved.

Reflect

The psalm opens with a plea for God’s help (verses 1-3), followed by a description of the nation’s plight (verses 4-7), an allegory of Israel as a vine planted by God (verses 8-13), and concludes with a further plea for God’s help (verses 14-19). Verses 3, 7, and 19 serve as a refrain to the psalm, and the refrain concludes each of the psalm’s major sections. In what way does the refrain express the tone of the entire psalm? What promise is expressed at the conclusion of the psalm (verse 18)? Is this a promise you can claim?

Pray

God of mercy, hear our prayers this day for peace throughout the world. Bring healing and restoration to wounded nations, and teach everyone to put their trust in you. Make me an instrument of your peace, and keep me faithful and rooted in your love. Amen.

Psalm 86 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 86: Today’s psalm is an individual lament expressing a plea for God’s help. It includes a hymn of praise (verses 8-13) and concludes with an affirmation of God’s love and faithfulness.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 86:11

Teach me, LORD, what you want me to do, and I will obey you faithfully; teach me to serve you with complete devotion.

Today’s Reading

1 Listen to me, LORD, and answer me, for I am helpless and weak. 2 Save me from death, because I am loyal to you; save me, for I am your servant and I trust in you. 3 You are my God, so be merciful to me; I pray to you all day long. 4 Make your servant glad, O Lord, because my prayers go up to you. 5 You are good to us and forgiving, full of constant love for all who pray to you. 6 Listen, LORD, to my prayer; hear my cries for help. 7 I call to you in times of trouble, because you answer my prayers. 8 There is no god like you, O Lord, not one has done what you have done. 9 All the nations that you have created will come and bow down to you; they will praise your greatness. 10 You are mighty and do wonderful things; you alone are God. 11 Teach me, LORD, what you want me to do, and I will obey you faithfully; teach me to serve you with complete devotion. 12 I will praise you with all my heart, O Lord my God; I will proclaim your greatness forever. 13 How great is your constant love for me! You have saved me from the grave itself. 14 Proud people are coming against me, O God; a cruel gang is trying to kill me— people who pay no attention to you. 15 But you, O Lord, are a merciful and loving God, always patient, always kind and faithful. 16 Turn to me and have mercy on me; strengthen me and save me, because I serve you just as my mother did. 17 Show me proof of your goodness, LORD; those who hate me will be ashamed when they see that you have given me comfort and help.

Reflect

How does the psalm writer begin this prayer? What verses express trust in God? Does the writer make any promises to God? How do you express your devotion to God? Is there anything for which you need to ask God’s help today?

Pray

God of comfort and help, you are merciful and loving, always patient and kind. Turn to me and hear my prayer for ____________________. Teach me, Lord God, what you want me to do; teach me to obey you faithfully and to serve you with complete devotion. Amen.

Psalm 90 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 90: This psalm is a communal prayer that reflects the human quest to understand life’s meaning, particularly as life is drawing to a close. It juxtaposes the eternity of God with the shortness of human life. In this psalm, the Lord is called “our home” and the psalm was most likely written in response to the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 586 B.C. Prior to that time, “home” or “house” in the psalms would have referred to the Temple.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 90:1, 2

O Lord, you have always been our home. Before you created the hills or brought the world into being, you were eternally God and will be God forever.

Today’s Reading

1 O Lord, you have always been our home. 2 Before you created the hills or brought the world into being, you were eternally God, and will be God forever. 3 You tell us to return to what we were; you change us back to dust. 4 A thousand years to you are like one day; they are like yesterday, already gone, like a short hour in the night. 5 You carry us away like a flood; we last no longer than a dream. We are like weeds that sprout in the morning, 6 that grow and burst into bloom, then dry up and die in the evening. 7 We are destroyed by your anger; we are terrified by your fury. 8 You place our sins before you, our secret sins where you can see them. 9 Our life is cut short by your anger; it fades away like a whisper. 10 Seventy years is all we have— eighty years, if we are strong; yet all they bring us is trouble and sorrow; life is soon over, and we are gone. 11 Who has felt the full power of your anger? Who knows what fear your fury can bring? 12 Teach us how short our life is, so that we may become wise. 13 How much longer will your anger last? Have pity, O LORD, on your servants! 14 Fill us each morning with your constant love, so that we may sing and be glad all our life. 15 Give us now as much happiness as the sadness you gave us during all our years of misery. 16 Let us, your servants, see your mighty deeds; let our descendants see your glorious might. 17 Lord our God, may your blessings be with us. Give us success in all we do!

Reflect

This psalm begins by affirming God’s eternity and everlasting care for humankind (verses 1, 2), followed by describing the brevity of life (verses 3-10), and concluding with a prayer for redemption (verses 11-17). What are your thoughts regarding the verses about God’s anger (verses 7-13)? What does the writer ask of God? A beloved hymn, “O God, Our Help in Ages Past,” is based on Psalm 90, and you may wish to compare the words of the psalm with this hymn.

Pray

O God, you are our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, and our eternal home. Fill me each morning with your constant love, and may your favor rest upon me each day of my life. Amen.

Psalm 91 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 91: This psalm expresses confidence in God’s protection, particularly in times of danger. Those who are faithful are assured of God’s unfailing presence.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 91:14

God says, “I will save those who love me and will protect those who acknowledge me as LORD.”

Today’s Reading

1 Whoever goes to the LORD for safety, whoever remains under the protection of the Almighty, 2 can say to him, “You are my defender and protector. You are my God; in you I trust.” 3 He will keep you safe from all hidden dangers and from all deadly diseases. 4 He will cover you with his wings; you will be safe in his care; his faithfulness will protect and defend you. 5 You need not fear any dangers at night or sudden attacks during the day 6 or the plagues that strike in the dark or the evils that kill in daylight. 7 A thousand may fall dead beside you, ten thousand all around you, but you will not be harmed. 8 You will look and see how the wicked are punished. 9 You have made the LORD your defender, the Most High your protector, 10 and so no disaster will strike you, no violence will come near your home. 11 God will put his angels in charge of you to protect you wherever you go. 12 They will hold you up with their hands to keep you from hurting your feet on the stones. 13 You will trample down lions and snakes, fierce lions and poisonous snakes. 14 God says, “I will save those who love me and will protect those who acknowledge me as LORD. 15 When they call to me, I will answer them; when they are in trouble, I will be with them. I will rescue them and honor them. 16 I will reward them with long life; I will save them.”

Reflect

How does the psalm writer express trust in God’s protection? Reread verses 3-13 and personalize this psalm by replacing the word “you” with “me” or “I” as appropriate and replacing the word “your” with “my.” What verses in this psalm are particularly meaningful to you and why?

Pray

Almighty God, you are my protector and defender. Whenever I am in trouble, I know that you are with me. You are my place of safety. In you, Lord God, I put my trust. In your holy name, I pray. Amen.

Psalm 57 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 57: This psalm is an individual prayer for God’s protection from enemies. It is attributed to David at a time when he was hiding in a cave while running away from King Saul (see 1 Samuel 24). The psalm includes two refrains (verses 5, 11) that attest to the greatness and glory of God.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 57:2

I call to God, the Most High, to God who supplies my every need.

Today’s Reading

1 Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful, because I come to you for safety. In the shadow of your wings I find protection until the raging storms are over. 2 I call to God, the Most High, to God, who supplies my every need. 3 He will answer from heaven and save me; he will defeat my oppressors. God will show me his constant love and faithfulness. 4 I am surrounded by enemies, who are like lions hungry for human flesh. Their teeth are like spears and arrows; their tongues are like sharp swords. 5 Show your greatness in the sky, O God, and your glory over all the earth. 6 My enemies have spread a net to catch me; I am overcome with distress. They dug a pit in my path, but fell into it themselves. 7 I have complete confidence, O God; I will sing and praise you! 8 Wake up, my soul! Wake up, my harp and lyre! I will wake up the sun. 9 I will thank you, O Lord, among the nations. I will praise you among the peoples. 10 Your constant love reaches the heavens; your faithfulness touches the skies. 11 Show your greatness in the sky, O God, and your glory over all the earth.

Reflect

How would you describe the tone at the opening of this psalm? In verse 4, enemies are described as lions. In the psalms, enemies are often compared to lions or wild animals (see 7:2; 17:12; 22:12-13; 35:17; 58:3-6). What does this tell you about the kind of danger the psalm writer was facing? How is confidence in God expressed?

Pray

I thank you, Lord God, for your steadfast love and faithfulness. Great are you, God Most High, and your glory is over all the earth. Amen.

Psalm 59 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 59: Today’s psalm is another prayer for God’s protection from enemies and is attributed to David, referring to a time when King Saul sent men to watch David’s house at night and to kill him in the morning (see 1 Samuel 19). The writer expresses confidence in God, and the psalm concludes with an affirmation of God’s constant love.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 59:17

I will praise you, my defender. My refuge is God, the God who loves me.

Today’s Reading

1 Save me from my enemies, my God; protect me from those who attack me! 2 Save me from those evil people; rescue me from those murderers! 3 Look! They are waiting to kill me; cruel people are gathering against me. It is not because of any sin or wrong I have done, 4 nor because of any fault of mine, O LORD, that they hurry to their places. 5 Rise, LORD God Almighty, and come to my aid; see for yourself, God of Israel! Wake up and punish the heathen; show no mercy to evil traitors! 6 They come back in the evening, snarling like dogs as they go about the city. 7 Listen to their insults and threats. Their tongues are like swords in their mouths, yet they think that no one hears them. 8 But you laugh at them, LORD; you mock all the heathen. 9 I have confidence in your strength; you are my refuge, O God. 10 My God loves me and will come to me; he will let me see my enemies defeated. 11 Do not kill them, O God, or my people may forget. Scatter them by your strength and defeat them, O Lord, our protector. 12 Sin is on their lips; all their words are sinful; may they be caught in their pride! Because they curse and lie, 13 destroy them in your anger; destroy them completely. Then everyone will know that God rules in Israel, that his rule extends over all the earth. 14 My enemies come back in the evening, snarling like dogs as they go about the city, 15 like dogs roaming about for food and growling if they do not find enough. 16 But I will sing about your strength; every morning I will sing aloud of your constant love. You have been a refuge for me, a shelter in my time of trouble. 17 I will praise you, my defender. My refuge is God, the God who loves me.

Reflect

Reread verses 1-7. How is the situation of the writer described? What verses in this psalm express the writer’s trust in God? Have you ever experienced a time of uncertainty when you needed to put your trust in God alone?

Pray

Almighty God, you alone are my refuge. Whenever I am afraid, I know that you are always near. Keep me close to you and calm my fears so that I may dwell in the safety of your constant love. Amen.

Psalm 61 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 61: Today’s psalm begins with a cry to God, and the psalm writer expresses the assurance of being heard by God. The writer then offers a prayer for the king and concludes with a promise to praise God daily.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 61:8

I will always sing praises to you, as I offer you daily what I have promised.

Today’s Reading

1 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer! 2 In despair and far from home I call to you! Take me to a safe refuge, 3 for you are my protector, my strong defense against my enemies. 4 Let me live in your sanctuary all my life; let me find safety under your wings. 5 You have heard my promises, O God, and you have given me what belongs to those who honor you. 6 Add many years to the king's life; let him live on and on! 7 May he rule forever in your presence, O God; protect him with your constant love and faithfulness. 8 So I will always sing praises to you, as I offer you daily what I have promised.

Reflect

The references to promises in today’s reading (verses 5, 8) most likely refer to trusting in and worshiping God. What promises have you made to God? How will you worship and praise God today?

Pray

Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. You are my safe haven. In your presence I feel secure because of your constant love and faithfulness. Daily will I praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

Psalm 62 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 62: Today’s psalm begins with the writer expressing complete trust in God, even when experiencing adversity. The writer warns against depending on violence and riches; salvation is dependent on God alone.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 62:5

I depend on God alone; I put my hope in him.

Today’s Reading

1 I wait patiently for God to save me; I depend on him alone. 2 He alone protects and saves me; he is my defender, and I shall never be defeated. 3 How much longer will all of you attack someone who is no stronger than a broken-down fence? 4 You only want to bring him down from his place of honor; you take pleasure in lies. You speak words of blessing, but in your heart you curse him. 5 I depend on God alone; I put my hope in him. 6 He alone protects and saves me; he is my defender, and I shall never be defeated. 7 My salvation and honor depend on God; he is my strong protector; he is my shelter. 8 Trust in God at all times, my people. Tell him all your troubles, for he is our refuge. 9 Human beings are all like a puff of breath; great and small alike are worthless. Put them on the scales, and they weigh nothing; they are lighter than a mere breath. 10 Don't put your trust in violence; don't hope to gain anything by robbery; even if your riches increase, don't depend on them. 11 More than once I have heard God say that power belongs to him 12 and that his love is constant. You yourself, O Lord, reward everyone according to their deeds.

Reflect

The psalm writer refers to God as defender (verses 2, 6), protector (verse 7), shelter (verse 7), and refuge (verse 8). What are your thoughts about these images for God? What do verses 3 and 4 tell you about the psalm writer’s situation? The writer urges us to tell God all our troubles (verse 8). Is there anything that you need to tell God about today?

Pray

Lord God, you are my defender, protector, shelter, and refuge. I depend on you alone, O God, and place my hope and trust in you. When I am troubled and burdened with worry, I can turn to you, gracious God, trusting in your care and constant love. Amen.

Psalm 63 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 63: This psalm can be read as a concluding component to Psalms 61 and 62 which we read the past two days. These three psalms comprise a trilogy of prayers that focus on trusting in God. In today’s reading, the writer expresses a deep yearning for God and describes the comfort and assurance of being in God’s presence.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 63:1

O God, you are my God, and I long for you. My whole being desires you; like a dry, worn-out, and waterless land, my soul is thirsty for you.

Today’s Reading

1 O God, you are my God, and I long for you. My whole being desires you; like a dry, worn-out, and waterless land, my soul is thirsty for you. 2 Let me see you in the sanctuary; let me see how mighty and glorious you are. 3 Your constant love is better than life itself, and so I will praise you. 4 I will give you thanks as long as I live; I will raise my hands to you in prayer. 5 My soul will feast and be satisfied, and I will sing glad songs of praise to you. 6 As I lie in bed, I remember you; all night long I think of you, 7 because you have always been my help. In the shadow of your wings I sing for joy. 8 I cling to you, and your hand keeps me safe. 9 Those who are trying to kill me will go down into the world of the dead. 10 They will be killed in battle, and their bodies eaten by wolves. 11 Because God gives him victory, the king will rejoice. Those who make promises in God's name will praise him, but the mouths of liars will be shut.

Reflect

What verses in this psalm attest to the psalm writer’s deep longing for God? How is this longing described? The psalm writer states that God’s “constant love is better than life itself” (verse 3). What does God’s constant love mean to you?

Pray

Sovereign God, my soul thirsts for you. Your constant love is my source of joy and comfort. I cling to you, and your hand keeps me safe. I will give you thanks as long as I live. Amen.

Psalm 6 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 6: This psalm expresses a plea to God for help in time of trouble. Even though the writer views this trouble as punishment from God (verse 1), the writer trusts in God’s mercy.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 6:8b, 9

The LORD hears my weeping; he listens to my cry for help and will answer my prayer.

Today’s Reading

1 LORD, don't be angry and rebuke me! Don't punish me in your anger! 2 I am worn out, O LORD; have pity on me! Give me strength; I am completely exhausted 3 and my whole being is deeply troubled. How long, O LORD, will you wait to help me? 4 Come and save me, LORD; in your mercy rescue me from death. 5 In the world of the dead you are not remembered; no one can praise you there. 6 I am worn out with grief; every night my bed is damp from my weeping; my pillow is soaked with tears. 7 I can hardly see; my eyes are so swollen from the weeping caused by my enemies. 8 Keep away from me, you evil people! The LORD hears my weeping; 9 he listens to my cry for help and will answer my prayer. 10 My enemies will know the bitter shame of defeat; in sudden confusion they will be driven away.

Reflect

How is the psalm writer’s distress described? Have you ever felt this way? If so, what did you ask of God? Did such a time in your life bring you closer to God? How does the psalm writer express trust in God?

Pray

Lord God, when I cry out, you hear my weeping. In your mercy, you hear my prayer and comfort me when I am weary and exhausted. When I am weak, I can turn to you and you will renew my strength. I praise you, Lord God, for your saving love. Amen.

Psalm 7 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 7: In this psalm, the writer appeals to God for justice as a result of being falsely accused. The writer expresses confidence in God’s righteousness, and the psalm concludes with an affirmation that the wicked will be punished and that God’s justice will triumph.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 7:17

I thank the LORD for his justice; I sing praises to the LORD, the Most High.

Today’s Reading

1 O LORD, my God, I come to you for protection; rescue me and save me from all who pursue me, 2 or else like a lion they will carry me off where no one can save me, and there they will tear me to pieces. 3-4 O LORD, my God, if I have wronged anyone, if I have betrayed a friend or without cause done violence to my enemy — if I have done any of these things— 5 then let my enemies pursue me and catch me, let them cut me down and kill me and leave me lifeless on the ground! 6 Rise in your anger, O LORD! Stand up against the fury of my enemies; rouse yourself and help me! Justice is what you demand, 7 so bring together all the peoples around you, and rule over them from above. 8 You are the judge of all people. Judge in my favor, O LORD; you know that I am innocent. 9 You are a righteous God and judge our thoughts and desires. Stop the wickedness of evildoers and reward those who are good. 10 God is my protector; he saves those who obey him. 11 God is a righteous judge and always condemns the wicked. 12 If they do not change their ways, God will sharpen his sword. He bends his bow and makes it ready; 13 he takes up his deadly weapons and aims his burning arrows. 14 See how wicked people think up evil; they plan trouble and practice deception. 15 But in the traps they set for others, they themselves get caught. 16 So they are punished by their own evil and are hurt by their own violence. 17 I thank the LORD for his justice; I sing praises to the LORD, the Most High.

Reflect

What does the psalm writer ask of God? Is the writer seeking revenge or justice? Or both? Have you ever experienced a time when you needed to rely on God’s justice?

Pray

Righteous God, you are the judge of all people. You know my thoughts and desires. Forgive me when I stray and act in ways that are displeasing to you. Order my steps this day and guide me in the way of truth. I praise you, Lord Most High, for your mercy and steadfast love. Amen.

Psalm 8 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 8: This psalm of praise describes the role of human beings in relation to all of creation. The psalm begins and ends with the same verse, celebrating God’s greatness in all the world.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 8:1

O LORD, our Lord, your greatness is seen in all the world!

Today’s Reading

1 O LORD, our Lord, your greatness is seen in all the world! Your praise reaches up to the heavens; 2 it is sung by children and babies. You are safe and secure from all your enemies; you stop anyone who opposes you. 3 When I look at the sky, which you have made, at the moon and the stars, which you set in their places— 4 what are human beings, that you think of them; mere mortals, that you care for them? 5 Yet you made them inferior only to yourself; you crowned them with glory and honor. 6 You appointed them rulers over everything you made; you placed them over all creation: 7 sheep and cattle, and the wild animals too; 8 the birds and the fish and the creatures in the seas. 9 O LORD, our Lord, your greatness is seen in all the world!

Reflect

Reread verses 5-8. What do these verses say about human beings? This description is similar to what is recorded in Genesis 1:26-28. According to verses 5 and 6, God has “crowned them with glory and honor” and “appointed them rulers over everything [God] made” and “placed them over all creation.” Does such glory and honor carry responsibilities for human beings with regard to creation? Explain.

Pray

Lord God, your greatness is seen in all the world. Teach me to be a faithful steward of your creation. With a thankful heart, I sing praises to you and glorify your holy name. Amen.

Psalm 9 (Good News Translation)

Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another

Introduction

Psalm 9: This psalm is a prayer of thanksgiving for God’s saving activity. Several verses (3, 6, 13, 15-17) in this psalm refer to enemies, also described as the heathen or the wicked. Enemies are people who oppose God and who victimize others. God is praised as a righteous judge who cares for the oppressed, the poor, and those who are suffering.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 9:10

Those who know you, LORD, will trust you; you do not abandon anyone who comes to you.

Today’s Reading

1 I will praise you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all the wonderful things you have done. 2 I will sing with joy because of you. I will sing praise to you, Almighty God. 3 My enemies turn back when you appear; they fall down and die. 4 You are fair and honest in your judgments, and you have judged in my favor. 5 You have condemned the heathen and destroyed the wicked; they will be remembered no more. 6 Our enemies are finished forever; you have destroyed their cities, and they are completely forgotten. 7 But the LORD is king forever; he has set up his throne for judgment. 8 He rules the world with righteousness; he judges the nations with justice. 9 The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a place of safety in times of trouble. 10 Those who know you, LORD, will trust you; you do not abandon anyone who comes to you. 11 Sing praise to the LORD, who rules in Zion! Tell every nation what he has done! 12 God remembers those who suffer; he does not forget their cry, and he punishes those who wrong them. 13 Be merciful to me, O LORD! See the sufferings my enemies cause me! Rescue me from death, O LORD, 14 that I may stand before the people of Jerusalem and tell them all the things for which I praise you. I will rejoice because you saved me. 15 The heathen have dug a pit and fallen in; they have been caught in their own trap. 16 The LORD has revealed himself by his righteous judgments, and the wicked are trapped by their own deeds. 17 Death is the destiny of all the wicked, of all those who reject God. 18 The needy will not always be neglected; the hope of the poor will not be crushed forever. 19 Come, LORD! Do not let anyone defy you! Bring the heathen before you and pronounce judgment on them. 20 Make them afraid, O LORD; make them know that they are only mortal beings.

Reflect

This psalm opens with a joyful expression of praise for God’s wonderful deeds, and the writer thanks God for personal deliverance (verse 4). What wonderful things has God done for you? Has there been a time in your life when you experienced God’s intervention to bring about a favorable judgment? How will you thank and praise God today?

Pray

I will praise your name, O Lord, with all my heart, and tell of all the wonderful things you have done. I will sing with joy because of your righteousness, and today I will praise and thank you for __________________. Amen.
