Worshipers ask the question (verse 1), and the priests respond (verses 2-5). The psalm concludes with an affirmation to remain steadfast to do what God requires. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 15:1, 2a LORD, who may enter your Temple? Who may worship on Zion, your sacred hill? Those who obey God in everything and always do what is right. Today’s Reading 1 LORD, who may enter your Temple? Who may worship on Zion, your sacred hill? 2 Those who obey God in everything and always do what is right, whose words are true and sincere, 3 and who do not slander others. They do no wrong to their friends nor spread rumors about their neighbors. 4 They despise those whom God rejects, but honor those who obey the LORD. They always do what they promise, no matter how much it may cost. 5 They make loans without charging interest and cannot be bribed to testify against the innocent. Whoever does these things will always be secure. Reflect Reread verses 2-5. How do these verses characterize a life that is dependent on God? What were your thoughts when reading these verses? The writer is always aware of God’s presence, and knowing this fills the writer with joy. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 16:5 You, LORD, are all I have, and you give me all I need; my future is in your hands. Today’s Reading 1 Protect me, O God; I trust in you for safety. 2 I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; all the good things I have come from you.” 3 How excellent are the LORD's faithful people! My greatest pleasure is to be with them. 4 Those who rush to other gods bring many troubles on themselves. I will not take part in their sacrifices; I will not worship their gods. 5 You, LORD, are all I have, and you give me all I need; my future is in your hands. 6 How wonderful are your gifts to me; how good they are! 7 I praise the LORD, because he guides me, and in the night my conscience warns me. 8 I am always aware of the LORD's presence; he is near, and nothing can shake me. 9 And so I am thankful and glad, and I feel completely secure, 10 because you protect me from the power of death. I have served you faithfully, and you will not abandon me to the world of the dead. 11 You will show me the path that leads to life; your presence fills me with joy and brings me pleasure forever. The writer pleads for help, protection, and deliverance from enemies, trusting in God’s wonderful love. The psalm concludes by affirming the joy that one experiences in God’s presence. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 17:6 I pray to you, O God, because you answer me; so turn to me and listen to my words. Today’s Reading 1 Listen, O LORD, to my plea for justice; pay attention to my cry for help! Listen to my honest prayer. 2 You will judge in my favor, because you know what is right. 3 You know my heart. You have come to me at night; you have examined me completely and found no evil desire in me. I speak no evil, 4 as others do; I have obeyed your command and have not followed paths of violence. 5 I have always walked in your way and have never strayed from it. 6 I pray to you, O God, because you answer me; so turn to me and listen to my words. 7 Reveal your wonderful love and save me; at your side I am safe from my enemies. 8 Protect me as you would your very eyes; hide me in the shadow of your wings 9 from the attacks of the wicked. Deadly enemies surround me; 10 they have no pity and speak proudly. 11 They are around me now, wherever I turn, watching for a chance to pull me down. 12 They are like lions, waiting for me, wanting to tear me to pieces. 13 Come, LORD! Oppose my enemies and defeat them! Save me from the wicked by your sword; 14 save me from those who in this life have all they want. Punish them with the sufferings you have stored up for them; may there be enough for their children and some left over for their children's children! 15 But I will see you, because I have done no wrong; and when I awake, your presence will fill me with joy. Reflect In verses 3, the writer speaks of being examined by God. How is the writer’s defense expressed in verses 4 and 5? How would you answer God when undergoing such an examination? Members phkrause Posted March 18, 2012 Author Members Posted March 18, 2012 March 18, 2012 Psalm 24 (Good News Translation) Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another Introduction Psalm 24: This psalm, in the form of a liturgical hymn, begins by affirming that God is our sovereign Creator. Two questions about who may enter the Temple are followed by a listing of qualifications for worshipers (similar to Psalm 15, the reading for March 15). The concluding verses employ military language and celebrate God as our great and victorious king. Most likely these verses were sung as the priests processed into the sanctuary, bearing the Covenant Box. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 24:10 Who is the great king? The triumphant LORD – he is the great king! Today’s Reading 1 The world and all that is in it belong to the LORD; the earth and all who live on it are his. 2 He built it on the deep waters beneath the earth and laid its foundations in the ocean depths. 3 Who has the right to go up the LORD's hill? Who may enter his holy Temple? 4 Those who are pure in act and in thought, who do not worship idols or make false promises. 5 The LORD will bless them and save them; God will declare them innocent. 6 Such are the people who come to God, who come into the presence of the God of Jacob. 7 Fling wide the gates, open the ancient doors, and the great king will come in. 8 Who is this great king? He is the LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, victorious in battle. 9 Fling wide the gates, open the ancient doors, and the great king will come in. 10 Who is this great king? The triumphant LORD —he is the great king! Reflect The LORD’s hill (verse 3) refers to the hill in Jerusalem on which the Temple was built. In this psalm, what are the qualifications for ascending the hill and entering the Temple? What promise is given (verse 5)? What are your thoughts when first entering a house of worship? Today’s Scripture: Psalm 25:4 Teach me your ways, O LORD; make them known to me. Today’s Reading 1 To you, O LORD, I offer my prayer; 2 in you, my God, I trust. Save me from the shame of defeat; don't let my enemies gloat over me! 3 Defeat does not come to those who trust in you, but to those who are quick to rebel against you. 4 Teach me your ways, O LORD; make them known to me. 5 Teach me to live according to your truth, for you are my God, who saves me. I always trust in you. 6 Remember, O LORD, your kindness and constant love which you have shown from long ago. 7 Forgive the sins and errors of my youth. In your constant love and goodness, remember me, LORD! 8 Because the LORD is righteous and good, he teaches sinners the path they should follow. 9 He leads the humble in the right way and teaches them his will. 10 With faithfulness and love he leads all who keep his covenant and obey his commands. 11 Keep your promise, LORD, and forgive my sins, for they are many. 12 Those who have reverence for the LORD will learn from him the path they should follow. 13 They will always be prosperous, and their children will possess the land. 14 The LORD is the friend of those who obey him and he affirms his covenant with them. 15 I look to the LORD for help at all times, and he rescues me from danger. 16 Turn to me, LORD, and be merciful to me, because I am lonely and weak. 17 Relieve me of my worries and save me from all my troubles. 18 Consider my distress and suffering and forgive all my sins. 19 See how many enemies I have; see how much they hate me. 20 Protect me and save me; keep me from defeat. I come to you for safety. 21 May my goodness and honesty preserve me, because I trust in you. 22 From all their troubles, O God, save your people Israel! Reflect What does the psalm writer ask of God? What verses indicate the writer’s trust in God? The writer claims to do what is right, seeks to avoid evildoers, and expresses love for God’s house. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 26:2 Examine me and test me, LORD; judge my desires and thoughts. The LORD protects me from all danger; I will never be afraid. Today’s Reading 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; I will fear no one. The LORD protects me from all danger; I will never be afraid. 2 When evil people attack me and try to kill me, they stumble and fall. 3 Even if a whole army surrounds me, I will not be afraid; even if enemies attack me, I will still trust God. 4 I have asked the LORD for one thing; one thing only do I want: to live in the LORD's house all my life, to marvel there at his goodness, and to ask for his guidance. 5 In times of trouble he will shelter me; he will keep me safe in his Temple and make me secure on a high rock. 6 So I will triumph over my enemies around me. With shouts of joy I will offer sacrifices in his Temple; I will sing, I will praise the LORD. 7 Hear me, LORD, when I call to you! Be merciful and answer me! 8 When you said, “Come worship me,” I answered, “I will come, LORD.” 9 Don't hide yourself from me! Don't be angry with me; don't turn your servant away. You have been my help; don't leave me, don't abandon me, O God, my savior. 10 My father and mother may abandon me, but the LORD will take care of me. 11 Teach me, LORD, what you want me to do, and lead me along a safe path, because I have many enemies. 12 Don't abandon me to my enemies, who attack me with lies and threats. 13 I know that I will live to see the LORD's goodness in this present life. 14 Trust in the LORD. The psalm focuses on sadness and sorrow turning to joy and concludes with a promise to thank God forever. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 30:4 Sing praise to the LORD, all his faithful people! Remember what the Holy One has done, and give him thanks! Today’s Reading 1 I praise you, LORD, because you have saved me and kept my enemies from gloating over me. 2 I cried to you for help, O LORD my God, and you healed me; 3 you kept me from the grave. I was on my way to the depths below, but you restored my life. 4 Sing praise to the LORD, all his faithful people! Remember what the Holy One has done, and give him thanks! 5 His anger lasts only a moment, his goodness for a lifetime. Tears may flow in the night, but joy comes in the morning. 6 I felt secure and said to myself, “I will never be defeated.” 7 You were good to me, LORD; you protected me like a mountain fortress. But then you hid yourself from me, and I was afraid. 8 I called to you, LORD; I begged for your help: 9 “What will you gain from my death? What profit from my going to the grave? Are dead people able to praise you? Can they proclaim your unfailing goodness? 10 Hear me, LORD, and be merciful! Help me, LORD!” 11 You have changed my sadness into a joyful dance; you have taken away my sorrow and surrounded me with joy. 12 So I will not be silent; I will sing praise to you. LORD, you are my God; I will give you thanks forever. Reflect For what does the psalm writer thank and praise God? How would you describe the overall tone of this psalm? Members phkrause Posted March 23, 2012 Author Members Posted March 23, 2012 March 23, 2012 Psalm 31 (Good News Translation) Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another Introduction Psalm 31: Today’s psalm begins with the writer expressing trust in God (verses 1-8), followed by a series of laments (verses 9-13), trust (verse 14), pleas for deliverance (verses 15-18), and concluding with praise (verses 19-24). This psalm is an example of voicing complaints while, at the same time, expressing trust in God. A number of faith traditions include verses 1-5 among the readings at the beginning of Holy Week or the Sunday of the Lord’s Passion. Some translations render verse 5 as “Into your hand I commit my spirit,” words spoken by Jesus from the cross (Luke 23:46). Today’s Scripture: Psalm 31:24 Be strong, be courageous, all you that hope in the LORD. Today’s Reading 1 I come to you, LORD, for protection; never let me be defeated. You are a righteous God; save me, I pray! 2 Hear me! Save me now! Be my refuge to protect me; my defense to save me. 3 You are my refuge and defense; guide me and lead me as you have promised. 4 Keep me safe from the trap that has been set for me; shelter me from danger. 5 I place myself in your care. You will save me, LORD; you are a faithful God. 6 You hate those who worship false gods, but I trust in you. 7 I will be glad and rejoice because of your constant love. You see my suffering; you know my trouble. 8 You have not let my enemies capture me; you have given me freedom to go where I wish. 9 Be merciful to me, LORD, for I am in trouble; my eyes are tired from so much crying; I am completely worn out. 10 I am exhausted by sorrow, and weeping has shortened my life. I am weak from all my troubles; even my bones are wasting away. 11 All my enemies, and especially my neighbors, treat me with contempt. Those who know me are afraid of me; when they see me in the street, they run away. 12 Everyone has forgotten me, as though I were dead; I am like something thrown away. 13 I hear many enemies whispering; terror is all around me. They are making plans against me, plotting to kill me. 14 But my trust is in you, O LORD; you are my God. 15 I am always in your care; save me from my enemies, from those who persecute me. 16 Look on your servant with kindness; save me in your constant love. 17 I call to you, LORD; don't let me be disgraced. May the wicked be disgraced; may they go silently down to the world of the dead. 18 Silence those liars— all the proud and arrogant who speak with contempt about the righteous. 19 How wonderful are the good things you keep for those who honor you! Everyone knows how good you are, how securely you protect those who trust you. 20 You hide them in the safety of your presence from the plots of others; in a safe shelter you hide them from the insults of their enemies. 21 Praise the LORD! How wonderfully he showed his love for me when I was surrounded and attacked! 22 I was afraid and thought that he had driven me out of his presence. But he heard my cry, when I called to him for help. 23 Love the LORD, all his faithful people. The LORD protects the faithful, but punishes the proud as they deserve. 24 Be strong, be courageous, all you that hope in the LORD. Reflect Note the movement of this psalm from words of confidence and trust, to petitions for help, and concluding with praise. Have you ever experienced this type of spiritual journey when praying? What follows is a description of life in terms of before and after confessing one’s sins (verses 3-5). The writer encourages people to pray and concludes with praise for the LORD’s righteousness. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 32:1 Happy are those whose sins are forgiven, whose wrongs are pardoned. Today’s Reading 1 Happy are those whose sins are forgiven, whose wrongs are pardoned. 2 Happy is the one whom the LORD does not accuse of doing wrong and who is free from all deceit. 3 When I did not confess my sins, I was worn out from crying all day long. 4 Day and night you punished me, LORD; my strength was completely drained, as moisture is dried up by the summer heat. 5 Then I confessed my sins to you; I did not conceal my wrongdoings. I decided to confess them to you, and you forgave all my sins. 6 So all your loyal people should pray to you in times of need; when a great flood of trouble comes rushing in, it will not reach them. 7 You are my hiding place; you will save me from trouble. I sing aloud of your salvation, because you protect me. 8 The LORD says, “I will teach you the way you should go; I will instruct you and advise you. 9 Don't be stupid like a horse or a mule, which must be controlled with a bit and bridle to make it submit.” 10 The wicked will have to suffer, but those who trust in the LORD are protected by his constant love. 11 You that are righteous, be glad and rejoice because of what the LORD has done. Assurance of the LORD’s constant love comes from trusting in and obeying the LORD. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 33:5 The LORD loves what is righteous and just; his constant love fills the earth. Today’s Reading 1 All you that are righteous, shout for joy for what the LORD has done; praise him, all you that obey him. 2 Give thanks to the LORD with harps, sing to him with stringed instruments. 3 Sing a new song to him, play the harp with skill, and shout for joy! 4 The words of the LORD are true, and all his works are dependable. 5 The LORD loves what is righteous and just; his constant love fills the earth. 6 The LORD created the heavens by his command, the sun, moon, and stars by his spoken word. 7 He gathered all the seas into one place; he shut up the ocean depths in storerooms. 8 Worship the LORD, all the earth! Honor him, all peoples of the world! 9 When he spoke, the world was created; at his command everything appeared. 10 The LORD frustrates the purposes of the nations; he keeps them from carrying out their plans. 11 But his plans endure forever; his purposes last eternally. 12 Happy is the nation whose God is the LORD; happy are the people he has chosen for his own! 13 The LORD looks down from heaven and sees all of us humans. 14 From where he rules, he looks down on all who live on earth. 15 He forms all their thoughts and knows everything they do. 16 A king does not win because of his powerful army; a soldier does not triumph because of his strength. 17 War horses are useless for victory; their great strength cannot save. 18 The LORD watches over those who obey him, those who trust in his constant love. 19 He saves them from death; he keeps them alive in times of famine. 20 We put our hope in the LORD; he is our protector and our help. 21 We are glad because of him; we trust in his holy name. 22 May your constant love be with us, LORD, as we put our hope in you. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 34:6 Find out for yourself how good the LORD is. Happy are those who find safety with him. Today’s Reading 1 I will always thank the LORD; I will never stop praising him. 2 I will praise him for what he has done; may all who are oppressed listen and be glad! 3 Proclaim with me the LORD's greatness; let us praise his name together! 4 I prayed to the LORD, and he answered me; he freed me from all my fears. 5 The oppressed look to him and are glad; they will never be disappointed. 6 The helpless call to him, and he answers; he saves them from all their troubles. 7 His angel guards those who honor the LORD and rescues them from danger. 8 Find out for yourself how good the LORD is. Happy are those who find safety with him. 9 Honor the LORD, all his people; those who obey him have all they need. 10 Even lions go hungry for lack of food, but those who obey the LORD lack nothing good. 11 Come, my young friends, and listen to me, and I will teach you to honor the LORD. 12 Would you like to enjoy life? Do you want long life and happiness? 13 Then keep from speaking evil and from telling lies. 14 Turn away from evil and do good; strive for peace with all your heart. 15 The LORD watches over the righteous and listens to their cries; 16 but he opposes those who do evil, so that when they die, they are soon forgotten. 17 The righteous call to the LORD, and he listens; he rescues them from all their troubles. 18 The LORD is near to those who are discouraged; he saves those who have lost all hope. 19 Good people suffer many troubles, but the LORD saves them from them all; 20 the LORD preserves them completely; not one of their bones is broken. 21 Evil will kill the wicked; those who hate the righteous will be punished. 22 The LORD will save his people; those who go to him for protection will be spared. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 40:11 LORD, I know you will never stop being merciful to me. Your love and loyalty will always keep me safe. Today’s Reading 1 I waited patiently for the LORD's help; then he listened to me and heard my cry. 2 He pulled me out of a dangerous pit, out of the deadly quicksand. He set me safely on a rock and made me secure. 3 He taught me to sing a new song, a song of praise to our God. Many who see this will take warning and will put their trust in the LORD. 4 Happy are those who trust the LORD, who do not turn to idols or join those who worship false gods. 5 You have done many things for us, O LORD our God; there is no one like you! You have made many wonderful plans for us. I could never speak of them all— their number is so great! 6 You do not want sacrifices and offerings; you do not ask for animals burned whole on the altar or for sacrifices to take away sins. Instead, you have given me ears to hear you, 7 and so I answered, “Here I am; your instructions for me are in the book of the Law. 8 How I love to do your will, my God! I keep your teaching in my heart.” 9 In the assembly of all your people, LORD, I told the good news that you save us. You know that I will never stop telling it. 10 I have not kept the news of salvation to myself; I have always spoken of your faithfulness and help. In the assembly of all your people I have not been silent about your loyalty and constant love. 11 LORD, I know you will never stop being merciful to me. Your love and loyalty will always keep me safe. 12 I am surrounded by many troubles— too many to count! My sins have caught up with me, and I can no longer see; they are more than the hairs of my head, and I have lost my courage. 13 Save me, LORD! Help me now! 14 May those who try to kill me be completely defeated and confused. May those who are happy because of my troubles be turned back and disgraced. 15 May those who make fun of me be dismayed by their defeat. 16 May all who come to you be glad and joyful. May all who are thankful for your salvation always say, “How great is the LORD!” 17 I am weak and poor, O Lord, but you have not forgotten me. You are my savior and my God— hurry to my aid! Reflect The psalm writer begins with an acknowledgment of “waiting patiently for the LORD’s help.” Have you ever experienced a time when you needed to wait with patience for God’s help? What were your thoughts at that time? Reread verses 12-17. For what is the writer seeking God’s help? Pray Merciful Lord, your love and loyalty keep me safe. Members phkrause Posted March 29, 2012 Author Members Posted March 29, 2012 March 28, 2012 Psalm 41 (Good News Translation) Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another Introduction Psalm 41: The opening verses of this psalm affirm God’s care for those who are poor and sick and that those who are concerned about them will be blessed (happy). The following nine verses are the writer’s personal lament for forgiveness and healing, and the psalm concludes with praise to God. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 41:3 The LORD will help them when they are sick and will restore them to health. Today’s Reading 1 Happy are those who are concerned for the poor; the LORD will help them when they are in trouble. 2 The LORD will protect them and preserve their lives; he will make them happy in the land; he will not abandon them to the power of their enemies. 3 The LORD will help them when they are sick and will restore them to health. 4 I said, “I have sinned against you, LORD; be merciful to me and heal me.” 5 My enemies say cruel things about me. They want me to die and be forgotten. 6 Those who come to see me are not sincere; they gather bad news about me and then go out and tell it everywhere. 7 All who hate me whisper to each other about me, they imagine the worst about me. 8 They say, “He is fatally ill; he will never leave his bed again.” 9 Even my best friend, the one I trusted most, the one who shared my food, has turned against me. 10 Be merciful to me, LORD, and restore my health, and I will pay my enemies back. 11 They will not triumph over me, and I will know that you are pleased with me. 12 You will help me, because I do what is right; you will keep me in your presence forever. 13 Praise the LORD, the God of Israel! Praise him now and forever! Amen! Amen! Reflect What is the psalm writer’s prayer (verse 4-12)? What verses express the writer’s trust in God? The collection of 150 psalms in the Bible (referred to as the Psalter) are divided into five books, and Psalm 41 closes Book 1. Each closing psalm in the Psalter concludes with a doxology (an expression of praise) like the last verse in this psalm (verse 13). What will be your doxology today? Pray Lord God, in your mercy, forgive me my sins and renew my strength each day. Heal me when I am ill and keep me secure in the shelter of your love and in your presence. God is sovereign over turmoil in nature and tumult of war and will keep Jerusalem (the city of God) secure. The hymn, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” by the reformer, Martin Luther, is based on this psalm. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 46:1 God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. Today’s Reading 1 God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. 2 So we will not be afraid, even if the earth is shaken and mountains fall into the ocean depths; 3 even if the seas roar and rage, and the hills are shaken by the violence. 4 There is a river that brings joy to the city of God, to the sacred house of the Most High. 5 God is in that city, and it will never be destroyed; at early dawn he will come to its aid. 6 Nations are terrified, kingdoms are shaken; God thunders, and the earth dissolves. 7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. 8 Come and see what the LORD has done. See what amazing things he has done on earth. 9 He stops wars all over the world; he breaks bows, destroys spears, and sets shields on fire. 10 “Stop fighting,” he says, “and know that I am God, supreme among the nations, supreme over the world.” 11 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Reflect How does the psalm writer describe God’s power? Verses 7 and 11 serve as a refrain, affirming that God is with us. When and how do you experience God’s presence in your life? Members phkrause Posted March 30, 2012 Author Members Posted March 30, 2012 March 30, 2012 Psalm 48 (Good News Translation) Come Together in Faith and Pray for One Another Introduction Psalm 48: Mount Zion is the sacred hill and refers to Jerusalem, the city of God. This psalm may have been sung by pilgrims visiting Jerusalem. As expressed in yesterday’s reading (Psalm 46:5), today’s psalm also states that the city of God will be kept safe (verse 8). Today’s Scripture: Psalm 48:14 “This is our God forever and ever; he will lead us for all time to come.” Today’s Reading 1 The LORD is great and is to be highly praised in the city of our God, on his sacred hill. 2 Zion, the mountain of God, is high and beautiful; the city of the great king brings joy to all the world. 3 God has shown that there is safety with him inside the fortresses of the city. 4 The kings gathered together and came to attack Mount Zion. 5 But when they saw it, they were amazed; they were afraid and ran away. 6 There they were seized with fear and anguish, like a woman about to bear a child, 7 like ships tossing in a furious storm. 8 We have heard what God has done, and now we have seen it in the city of our God, the LORD Almighty; he will keep the city safe forever. 9 Inside your Temple, O God, we think of your constant love. 10 You are praised by people everywhere, and your fame extends over all the earth. You rule with justice; 11 let the people of Zion be glad! You give right judgments; let there be joy in the cities of Judah! 12 People of God, walk around Zion and count the towers; 13 take notice of the walls and examine the fortresses, so that you may tell the next generation: 14 “This God is our God forever and ever; he will lead us for all time to come.” Reflect In what ways does this psalm express confidence in God? Why does the city bring “joy to all the world” (verse 2)? Why did the city cause some to be afraid (verse 5)? How do you offer praise to God in your house of worship? Pray Lord God, like a fortress, there is safety with you. Day by day you watch over and lead me. You are God forever and ever, and I will praise you always. Amen. God calls upon heaven and earth as witnesses and testifies against his people and rebukes those who violate his laws. God speaks about the purpose of sacrifice and the kind of sacrifice he desires. This psalm was most likely used in worship during a festival in which the people renewed their covenant with God. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 50:6 The heavens proclaim that God is righteous, that he himself is judge. Today’s Reading 1 The Almighty God, the LORD, speaks; he calls to the whole earth from east to west. 2 God shines from Zion, the city perfect in its beauty. 3 Our God is coming, but not in silence; a raging fire is in front of him, a furious storm around him. 4 He calls heaven and earth as witnesses to see him judge his people. 5 He says, “Gather my faithful people to me, those who made a covenant with me by offering a sacrifice.” 6 The heavens proclaim that God is righteous, that he himself is judge. 7 “Listen, my people, and I will speak; I will testify against you, Israel. I am God, your God. 8 I do not reprimand you because of your sacrifices and the burnt offerings you always bring me. 9 And yet I do not need bulls from your farms or goats from your flocks; 10 all the animals in the forest are mine and the cattle on thousands of hills. 11 All the wild birds are mine and all living things in the fields. 12 If I were hungry, I would not ask you for food, for the world and everything in it is mine. 13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? 14 Let the giving of thanks be your sacrifice to God, and give the Almighty all that you promised. 15 Call to me when trouble comes; I will save you, and you will praise me.” 16 But God says to the wicked, “Why should you recite my commandments? Why should you talk about my covenant? 17 You refuse to let me correct you; you reject my commands. 18 You become the friend of every thief you see, and you associate with adulterers. 19 You are always ready to speak evil; you never hesitate to tell lies. 20 You are ready to accuse your own relatives and to find fault with them. 21 You have done all this, and I have said nothing, so you thought that I am like you. But now I reprimand you and make the matter plain to you. 22 Listen to this, you that ignore me, or I will destroy you, and there will be no one to save you. 23 Giving thanks is the sacrifice that honors me, and I will surely save all who obey me.” Reflect How is God described in verse 3? What does God say to the wicked (verses 16-22)? What is the kind of sacrifice that God desires (verses 14, 23)? What does God promise to those who obey him (verse 23)? What does this psalm teach about the nature of true worship versus ritual acts of piety? How will you offer your sacrifice of thanksgiving today? Today’s reading concludes the collection of psalms we have been reading this month. Have you found them helpful in dealing with situations in your life? Consider writing a psalm of your own as a response to something that took place or is occurring in your life. Pray Holy God, may I never forget to honor you with a sacrifice of thanksgiving. His entry marks the beginning of his final days in Jerusalem. Many people greet him with shouts of praise. Today’s Scripture: Mark 11:9b “Praise God! God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord!” Today’s Reading 1 As they approached Jerusalem, near the towns of Bethphage and Bethany, they came to the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent two of his disciples on ahead 2 with these instructions: “Go to the village there ahead of you. As soon as you get there, you will find a colt tied up that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 And if someone asks you why you are doing that, say that the Master needs it and will send it back at once. ” 4 So they went and found a colt out in the street, tied to the door of a house. As they were untying it, 5 some of the bystanders asked them, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered just as Jesus had told them, and the crowd let them go. 7 They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks over the animal, and Jesus got on. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches in the field and spread them on the road. 9 The people who were in front and those who followed behind began to shout, “Praise God! God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 God bless the coming kingdom of King David, our father! Praise be to God! ” 11 Jesus entered Jerusalem, went into the Temple, and looked around at everything. But since it was already late in the day, he went out to Bethany with the twelve disciples. Reflect The placing of cloaks and branches along the road indicates the way kings were honored in a procession (see 2 Kings 9:13). How did the crowd honor Jesus? How will you honor Jesus today? Using the example of a fig tree, Jesus offers a teaching about faith. Once again the religious leaders question Jesus’ authority. Today’s Scripture: Mark 11:17b “It is written in the Scriptures that God said, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer for the people of all nations.’ ” Today’s Reading 12 The next day, as they were coming back from Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 He saw in the distance a fig tree covered with leaves, so he went to see if he could find any figs on it. But when he came to it, he found only leaves, because it was not the right time for figs. 14 Jesus said to the fig tree, “No one shall ever eat figs from you again!” And his disciples heard him. 15 When they arrived in Jerusalem, Jesus went to the Temple and began to drive out all those who were buying and selling. He overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the stools of those who sold pigeons, 16 and he would not let anyone carry anything through the Temple courtyards. 17 He then taught the people: “It is written in the Scriptures that God said, “My Temple will be called a house of prayer for the people of all nations.” But you have turned it into a hideout for thieves! ” 18 The chief priests and the teachers of the Law heard of this, so they began looking for some way to kill Jesus. They were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. 19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples left the city. 20 Early next morning, as they walked along the road, they saw the fig tree. It was dead all the way down to its roots. 21 Peter remembered what had happened and said to Jesus, “Look, Teacher, the fig tree you cursed has died!” 22 Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23 I assure you that whoever tells this hill to get up and throw itself in the sea and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24 For this reason I tell you: When you pray and ask for something, believe that you have received it, and you will be given whatever you ask for. 25 And when you stand and pray, forgive anything you may have against anyone, so that your Father in heaven will forgive the wrongs you have done. ” 27 They arrived once again in Jerusalem. As Jesus was walking in the Temple, the chief priests, the teachers of the Law, and the elders came to him 28 and asked him, “What right do you have to do these things? Who gave you such right?” 29 Jesus answered them, “I will ask you just one question, and if you give me an answer, I will tell you what right I have to do these things. 30 Tell me, where did John's right to baptize come from: was it from God or from human beings? ” 31 They started to argue among themselves: “What shall we say? If we answer, “From God,” he will say, “Why, then, did you not believe John?” 32 But if we say, “From human beings...” ” (They were afraid of the people, because everyone was convinced that John had been a prophet.) 33 So their answer to Jesus was, “We don't know.” Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you, then, by what right I do these things.” Reflect According to one interpretation, the fruitless fig tree is meant to serve as a comparison to the Temple which had become a dishonest commercial marketplace. How did the chief priests react to what Jesus did? Why did they question Jesus’ authority? Jesus refers to the Temple as a “house of prayer.” How would you define your house of worship? The religious leaders question him about paying taxes and about rising from death. Today’s Scripture: Mark 12:17a So Jesus said, “Well, then, pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs to God.” Today’s Reading 1 Then Jesus spoke to them in parables: “Once there was a man who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a hole for the wine press, and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to tenants and left home on a trip. 2 When the time came to gather the grapes, he sent a slave to the tenants to receive from them his share of the harvest. 3 The tenants grabbed the slave, beat him, and sent him back without a thing. 4 Then the owner sent another slave; the tenants beat him over the head and treated him shamefully. 5 The owner sent another slave, and they killed him; and they treated many others the same way, beating some and killing others. 6 The only one left to send was the man's own dear son. Last of all, then, he sent his son to the tenants. “I am sure they will respect my son,” he said. 7 But those tenants said to one another, “This is the owner's son. Come on, let's kill him, and his property will be ours!” 8 So they grabbed the son and killed him and threw his body out of the vineyard. 9 “What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do?” asked Jesus. He will come and kill those tenants and turn the vineyard over to others. 10 Surely you have read this scripture? ‘The stone which the builders rejected as worthless turned out to be the most important of all. 11 This was done by the Lord; what a wonderful sight it is!’” 12 The Jewish leaders tried to arrest Jesus, because they knew that he had told this parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd, so they left him and went away. 13 Some Pharisees and some members of Herod's party were sent to Jesus to trap him with questions. 14 They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you tell the truth, without worrying about what people think. You pay no attention to anyone's status, but teach the truth about God's will for people. Tell us, is it against our Law to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor? Should we pay them or not?” 15 But Jesus saw through their trick and answered, “Why are you trying to trap me? Bring a silver coin, and let me see it.” 16 They brought him one, and he asked, “Whose face and name are these?” “The Emperor's,” they answered. 17 So Jesus said, “Well, then, pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs to God.” And they were amazed at Jesus. 18 Then some Sadducees, who say that people will not rise from death, came to Jesus and said, 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote this law for us: “If a man dies and leaves a wife but no children, that man's brother must marry the widow so that they can have children who will be considered the dead man's children.” 20 Once there were seven brothers; the oldest got married and died without having children. 21 Then the second one married the woman, and he also died without having children. The same thing happened to the third brother, 22 and then to the rest: all seven brothers married the woman and died without having children. Last of all, the woman died. 23 Now, when all the dead rise to life on the day of resurrection, whose wife will she be? All seven of them had married her. ” 24 Jesus answered them, “How wrong you are! And do you know why? It is because you don't know the Scriptures or God's power. 25 For when the dead rise to life, they will be like the angels in heaven and will not marry. 26 Now, as for the dead being raised: haven't you ever read in the Book of Moses the passage about the burning bush? There it is written that God said to Moses, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” 27 He is the God of the living, not of the dead. You are completely wrong! ” Reflect The vineyard is a conventional metaphor for Israel, with God as the planter. How do you interpret this parable? How did the religious leaders react? Jesus observes the Passover meal with his disciples and announces that one of them will betray him. Today’s Scripture: Mark 14:24 Jesus said, “This is my blood which is poured out for many, my blood which seals God’s covenant.” Today’s Reading 1 It was now two days before the Festival of Passover and Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the teachers of the Law were looking for a way to arrest Jesus secretly and put him to death. 2 “We must not do it during the festival,” they said, “or the people might riot.” 3 Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a dreaded skin disease. While Jesus was eating, a woman came in with an alabaster jar full of a very expensive perfume made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus' head. 4 Some of the people there became angry and said to one another, “What was the use of wasting the perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor! ” And they criticized her harshly. 6 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a fine and beautiful thing for me. 7 You will always have poor people with you, and any time you want to, you can help them. But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could; she poured perfume on my body to prepare it ahead of time for burial. 9 Now, I assure you that wherever the gospel is preached all over the world, what she has done will be told in memory of her. ” 10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Jesus to them. 11 They were pleased to hear what he had to say, and promised to give him money. So Judas started looking for a good chance to hand Jesus over to them. 12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the day the lambs for the Passover meal were killed, Jesus' disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and get the Passover meal ready for you?” 13 Then Jesus sent two of them with these instructions: “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him 14 to the house he enters, and say to the owner of the house: “The Teacher says, Where is the room where my disciples and I will eat the Passover meal?” 15 Then he will show you a large upstairs room, fixed up and furnished, where you will get everything ready for us. ” 16 The disciples left, went to the city, and found everything just as Jesus had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal. 17 When it was evening, Jesus came with the twelve disciples. 18 While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “I tell you that one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.” 19 The disciples were upset and began to ask him, one after the other, “Surely you don't mean me, do you?” 20 Jesus answered, “It will be one of you twelve, one who dips his bread in the dish with me. 21 The Son of Man will die as the Scriptures say he will; but how terrible for that man who will betray the Son of Man! It would have been better for that man if he had never been born! ” 22 While they were eating, Jesus took a piece of bread, gave a prayer of thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples. “Take it,” he said, “this is my body.” 23 Then he took a cup, gave thanks to God, and handed it to them; and they all drank from it. 24 Jesus said, “This is my blood which is poured out for many, my blood which seals God's covenant. 25 I tell you, I will never again drink this wine until the day I drink the new wine in the Kingdom of God. ” 26 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. 27 Jesus said to them, “All of you will run away and leave me, for the scripture says, “God will kill the shepherd, and the sheep will all be scattered.” 28 But after I am raised to life, I will go to Galilee ahead of you. ” 29 Peter answered, “I will never leave you, even though all the rest do!” 30 Jesus said to Peter, “I tell you that before the rooster crows two times tonight, you will say three times that you do not know me.” 31 Peter answered even more strongly, “I will never say that, even if I have to die with you!” And all the other disciples said the same thing. Reflect What did Jesus say about the woman who anointed him with perfume? Why did Jesus say that her act prepared his body for burial (verse 8)? How did those present react to what the woman did? Why? Reread verses 22-24. In ancient Israel, the bond between God and Israel was ratified with the blood of a sacrificial animal (see Exodus 24:8). What is your understanding of Jesus’ words and his reference to “God’s covenant”? What promise did Peter make (verse 29)? What did Jesus tell him (verse 30)? Yet not what I want, but what you want.” Today’s Reading 32 They came to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James, and John with him. Distress and anguish came over him, 34 and he said to them, “The sorrow in my heart is so great that it almost crushes me. Stay here and keep watch.” 35 He went a little farther on, threw himself on the ground, and prayed that, if possible, he might not have to go through that time of suffering. 36 “Father,” he prayed, “my Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want.” 37 Then he returned and found the three disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Weren't you able to stay awake for even one hour?” 38 And he said to them, “Keep watch, and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 He went away once more and prayed, saying the same words. 40 Then he came back to the disciples and found them asleep; they could not keep their eyes open. And they did not know what to say to him. 41 When he came back the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come! Look, the Son of Man is now being handed over to the power of sinners. 42 Get up, let us go. Look, here is the man who is betraying me! ” 43 Jesus was still speaking when Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs and sent by the chief priests, the teachers of the Law, and the elders. 44 The traitor had given the crowd a signal: “The man I kiss is the one you want. Arrest him and take him away under guard.” 45 As soon as Judas arrived, he went up to Jesus and said, “Teacher!” and kissed him. 46 So they arrested Jesus and held him tight. 47 But one of those standing there drew his sword and struck at the High Priest's slave, cutting off his ear. 48 Then Jesus spoke up and said to them, “Did you have to come with swords and clubs to capture me, as though I were an outlaw? 49 Day after day I was with you teaching in the Temple, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must come true. ” 50 Then all the disciples left him and ran away. 51 A certain young man, dressed only in a linen cloth, was following Jesus. They tried to arrest him, 52 but he ran away naked, leaving the cloth behind. 53 Then Jesus was taken to the High Priest's house, where all the chief priests, the elders, and the teachers of the Law were gathering. 54 Peter followed from a distance and went into the courtyard of the High Priest's house. There he sat down with the guards, keeping himself warm by the fire. 55 The chief priests and the whole Council tried to find some evidence against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they could not find any. 56 Many witnesses told lies against Jesus, but their stories did not agree. 57 Then some men stood up and told this lie against Jesus: 58 “We heard him say, “I will tear down this Temple which men have made, and after three days I will build one that is not made by men.” ” 59 Not even they, however, could make their stories agree. 60 The High Priest stood up in front of them all and questioned Jesus, “Have you no answer to the accusation they bring against you?” 61 But Jesus kept quiet and would not say a word. Again the High Priest questioned him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed God?” 62 “I am,” answered Jesus, “and you will all see the Son of Man seated at the right side of the Almighty and coming with the clouds of heaven!” 63 The High Priest tore his robes and said, “We don't need any more witnesses! 64 You heard his blasphemy. What is your decision? ” They all voted against him: he was guilty and should be put to death. 65 Some of them began to spit on Jesus, and they blindfolded him and hit him. “Guess who hit you!” they said. And the guards took him and slapped him. 66 Peter was still down in the courtyard when one of the High Priest's servant women came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked straight at him and said, “You, too, were with Jesus of Nazareth.” 68 But he denied it. “I don't know...I don't understand what you are talking about,” he answered, and went out into the passageway. Just then a rooster crowed. 69 The servant woman saw him there and began to repeat to the bystanders, “He is one of them!” 70 But Peter denied it again. A little while later the bystanders accused Peter again, “You can't deny that you are one of them, because you, too, are from Galilee.” 71 Then Peter said, “I swear that I am telling the truth! May God punish me if I am not! I do not know the man you are talking about!” 72 Just then a rooster crowed a second time, and Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows two times, you will say three times that you do not know me.” And he broke down and cried. Reflect How did Judas identify Jesus to the crowd armed with swords and clubs? What did the other disciples do? Why? Recall Jesus’ words from yesterday’s reading (Mark 14:27): “God will kill the shepherd, and the sheep will all be scattered.” Describe Jesus’ trial before the Council. What accusations were made against him? Do you recall Peter’s promise and words from yesterday’s reading (Mark 14:29, 31)? What did he do after Jesus was arrested? Have you ever been in a situation where you were uncomfortable expressing your faith? Explain. Pray Almighty God, teach me to do, not what I want, but what you want. Keep me faithful and obedient to your will. Amen. Prayer Concern Those whose faith is weak Tomorrow's Reading Mark 15:1-41: Jesus is crucified. Jesus is sentenced to death and is crucified. Today’s Scripture: Mark 15:39 The army officer who was standing there in front of the cross saw how Jesus had died. “This man was really the Son of God!” he said. Today’s Reading 1 Early in the morning the chief priests met hurriedly with the elders, the teachers of the Law, and the whole Council, and made their plans. They put Jesus in chains, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. 2 Pilate questioned him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “So you say.” 3 The chief priests were accusing Jesus of many things, 4 so Pilate questioned him again, “Aren't you going to answer? Listen to all their accusations!” 5 Again Jesus refused to say a word, and Pilate was amazed. 6 At every Passover Festival Pilate was in the habit of setting free any one prisoner the people asked for. 7 At that time a man named Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder in the riot. 8 When the crowd gathered and began to ask Pilate for the usual favor, 9 he asked them, “Do you want me to set free for you the king of the Jews?” 10 He knew very well that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him because they were jealous. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask, instead, that Pilate set Barabbas free for them. 12 Pilate spoke again to the crowd, “What, then, do you want me to do with the one you call the king of the Jews?” 13 They shouted back, “Crucify him!” 14 “But what crime has he committed?” Pilate asked. They shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” 15 Pilate wanted to please the crowd, so he set Barabbas free for them. Then he had Jesus whipped and handed him over to be crucified. 16 The soldiers took Jesus inside to the courtyard of the governor's palace and called together the rest of the company. 17 They put a purple robe on Jesus, made a crown out of thorny branches, and put it on his head. 18 Then they began to salute him: “Long live the King of the Jews!” 19 They beat him over the head with a stick, spat on him, fell on their knees, and bowed down to him. 20 When they had finished making fun of him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. 21 On the way they met a man named Simon, who was coming into the city from the country, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus' cross. (Simon was from Cyrene and was the father of Alexander and Rufus.) 22 They took Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means “The Place of the Skull.” 23 There they tried to give him wine mixed with a drug called myrrh, but Jesus would not drink it. 24 Then they crucified him and divided his clothes among themselves, throwing dice to see who would get which piece of clothing. 25 It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The notice of the accusation against him said: “The King of the Jews.” 27 They also crucified two bandits with Jesus, one on his right and the other on his left. 29 People passing by shook their heads and hurled insults at Jesus: “Aha! You were going to tear down the Temple and build it back up in three days! 30 Now come down from the cross and save yourself ” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the Law made fun of Jesus, saying to one another, “He saved others, but he cannot save himself 32 Let us see the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him! ” And the two who were crucified with Jesus insulted him also. 33 At noon the whole country was covered with darkness, which lasted for three hours. 34 At three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud shout, “ Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? ” which means, “My God, my God, why did you abandon me?” 35 Some of the people there heard him and said, “Listen, he is calling for Elijah!” 36 One of them ran up with a sponge, soaked it in cheap wine, and put it on the end of a stick. Then he held it up to Jesus' lips and said, “Wait! Let us see if Elijah is coming to bring him down from the cross!” 37 With a loud cry Jesus died. 38 The curtain hanging in the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 The army officer who was standing there in front of the cross saw how Jesus had died. “This man was really the Son of God!” he said. 40 Some women were there, looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the younger James and of Joseph, and Salome. 41 They had followed Jesus while he was in Galilee and had helped him. Many other women who had come to Jerusalem with him were there also. Reflect Was Pilate reluctant to sentence Jesus to death? Why or why not? What persuaded him to issue the death sentence? How was Jesus mocked and insulted by the soldiers and the crowd? Reread verse 39. What do you think is significant about the army officer’s confession? Pray Lord Jesus, you willingly offered your life for my sake and took my sins with you to the cross. As I reflect on your sacrifice, I offer you my repentant heart and thank you for your undying love for me. Amen. He arranges to have Jesus buried in a tomb. Two women watch and see where Jesus’ body is placed. Today’s Scripture: Mark 15:43b Joseph went boldly into the presence of Pilate and asked him for the body of Jesus. Today’s Reading 42-43 It was toward evening when Joseph of Arimathea arrived. He was a respected member of the Council, who was waiting for the coming of the Kingdom of God. It was Preparation day (that is, the day before the Sabbath), so Joseph went boldly into the presence of Pilate and asked him for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead. He called the army officer and asked him if Jesus had been dead a long time. 45 After hearing the officer's report, Pilate told Joseph he could have the body. 46 Joseph bought a linen sheet, took the body down, wrapped it in the sheet, and placed it in a tomb which had been dug out of solid rock. Then he rolled a large stone across the entrance to the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph were watching and saw where the body of Jesus was placed. Reflect Today’s reading tells us that Joseph of Arimathea was “a respected member of the Council.” Do you think he was present at Jesus’ trial? Why do you think he took responsibility for Jesus’ burial? He is described as one “who was waiting for the coming of the Kingdom of God.” What is your understanding of the Kingdom of God? Members phkrause Posted April 8, 2012 Author Members Posted April 8, 2012 April 8, 2012 Mark 16:1-20 (Good News Translation) Come Together in Faith and Be Filled With Hope Introduction Mark 16:1-20: Several women go to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body. When they arrive, a messenger tells them that Jesus has been raised to life. After his resurrection, Jesus appears to his followers. He tells them what they must do and is then taken up to heaven. Today’s Scripture: Mark 16:6b “I know you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is not here – he has been raised! Look, here is the place where he was placed.” Today’s Reading 1 After the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices to go and anoint the body of Jesus. 2 Very early on Sunday morning, at sunrise, they went to the tomb. 3-4 On the way they said to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” (It was a very large stone.) Then they looked up and saw that the stone had already been rolled back. 5 So they entered the tomb, where they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe—and they were alarmed. 6 “Don't be alarmed,” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is not here—he has been raised! Look, here is the place where he was placed. 7 Now go and give this message to his disciples, including Peter: “He is going to Galilee ahead of you; there you will see him, just as he told you.” ” 8 So they went out and ran from the tomb, distressed and terrified. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. [ 9 After Jesus rose from death early on Sunday, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had driven out seven demons. 10 She went and told his companions. They were mourning and crying; 11 and when they heard her say that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe her. Jesus Appears to Two Followers ( Luke 24.13-35) 12 After this, Jesus appeared in a different manner to two of them while they were on their way to the country. 13 They returned and told the others, but these would not believe it. Jesus Appears to the Eleven ( Matthew 28.16-20; Luke 24.36-49; John 20.19-23; Acts 1.6-8) 14 Last of all, Jesus appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating. He scolded them, because they did not have faith and because they were too stubborn to believe those who had seen him alive. 15 He said to them, “Go throughout the whole world and preach the gospel to all people. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 Believers will be given the power to perform miracles: they will drive out demons in my name; they will speak in strange tongues; 18 if they pick up snakes or drink any poison, they will not be harmed; they will place their hands on sick people, and these will get well. ” 19 After the Lord Jesus had talked with them, he was taken up to heaven and sat at the right side of God. 20 The disciples went and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and proved that their preaching was true by the miracles that were performed.] [ 9 The women went to Peter and his friends and gave them a brief account of all they had been told. 10 After this, Jesus himself sent out through his disciples from the east to the west the sacred and everliving message of eternal salvation.] Reflect What were the women at the tomb told to do? How does verse 8 describe what they were feeling? Verses 9-11 recount Jesus’ appearance to Mary Magdalene. When she told the disciples that Jesus was alive, why didn’t they believe her? If you were among the disciples, what might your reaction have been to such news? What instructions did Jesus give his followers? What will you do today to show others that you are a follower of and believer in Jesus? Pray Alleluia! Lord Jesus, you are alive forevermore! The good news of your resurrection fills my heart with joy! Alleluia! Alleluia! Amen.
