Ephesians 5:1-20 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Ephesians 5:1-20: Paul offers advice for living as children of the light. He wants people to live by the Spirit and avoid being overcome by anger, unclean language, drunkenness, immorality, and greed. Instead, they should live in a way that reflects that they belong to the Lord.

Today’s Scripture: Ephesians 5:20

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, always give thanks for everything to God the Father.

Today’s Reading

1 Since you are God's dear children, you must try to be like him. 2 Your life must be controlled by love, just as Christ loved us and gave his life for us as a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice that pleases God. 3 Since you are God's people, it is not right that any matters of sexual immorality or indecency or greed should even be mentioned among you. 4 Nor is it fitting for you to use language which is obscene, profane, or vulgar. Rather you should give thanks to God. 5 You may be sure that no one who is immoral, indecent, or greedy (for greed is a form of idolatry) will ever receive a share in the Kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Do not let anyone deceive you with foolish words; it is because of these very things that God's anger will come upon those who do not obey him. 7 So have nothing at all to do with such people. 8 You yourselves used to be in the darkness, but since you have become the Lord's people, you are in the light. So you must live like people who belong to the light, 9 for it is the light that brings a rich harvest of every kind of goodness, righteousness, and truth. 10 Try to learn what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the worthless things that people do, things that belong to the darkness. Instead, bring them out to the light. ( 12 It is really too shameful even to talk about the things they do in secret.) 13 And when all things are brought out to the light, then their true nature is clearly revealed; 14 for anything that is clearly revealed becomes light. That is why it is said, “Wake up, sleeper, and rise from death, and Christ will shine on you.” 15 So be careful how you live. Don't live like ignorant people, but like wise people. 16 Make good use of every opportunity you have, because these are evil days. 17 Don't be fools, then, but try to find out what the Lord wants you to do. 18 Do not get drunk with wine, which will only ruin you; instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with the words of psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing hymns and psalms to the Lord with praise in your hearts. 20 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, always give thanks for everything to God the Father.

Reflect

Today’s reading catalogs a number of behaviors Christians are to avoid. Do you struggle with any of these? What does it mean to you to live as someone who belongs to the light?

Pray

Lord Jesus, too often I live in darkness and death. Wake me up, bring me to life, and shine your light on me. Infuse me with your Spirit, that I may praise you with all my heart. Amen.

Ephesians 6:10-24 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Ephesians 6:10-24: Paul offers encouragement to help the Ephesians remain strong against what he calls “wicked spiritual forces” (6:12). He describes the armor of God that will help them guard against evil. Then he exhorts them to pray continually for one another.

Today’s Scripture: Ephesians 6:18b

Pray on every occasion, as the Spirit leads. For this reason keep alert and never give up; pray always for all God’s people.

Today’s Reading

10 Finally, build up your strength in union with the Lord and by means of his mighty power. 11 Put on all the armor that God gives you, so that you will be able to stand up against the Devil's evil tricks. 12 For we are not fighting against human beings but against the wicked spiritual forces in the heavenly world, the rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers of this dark age. 13 So put on God's armor now! Then when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist the enemy's attacks; and after fighting to the end, you will still hold your ground. 14 So stand ready, with truth as a belt tight around your waist, with righteousness as your breastplate, 15 and as your shoes the readiness to announce the Good News of peace. 16 At all times carry faith as a shield; for with it you will be able to put out all the burning arrows shot by the Evil One. 17 And accept salvation as a helmet, and the word of God as the sword which the Spirit gives you. 18 Do all this in prayer, asking for God's help. Pray on every occasion, as the Spirit leads. For this reason keep alert and never give up; pray always for all God's people. 19 And pray also for me, that God will give me a message when I am ready to speak, so that I may speak boldly and make known the gospel's secret. 20 For the sake of this gospel I am an ambassador, though now I am in prison. Pray that I may be bold in speaking about the gospel as I should. 21 Tychicus, our dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord's work, will give you all the news about me, so that you may know how I am getting along. 22 That is why I am sending him to you—to tell you how all of us are getting along and to encourage you. 23 May God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give to all Christians peace and love with faith. 24 May God's grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with undying love.

Reflect

Reread verses 10-17. Paul uses militaristic imagery as he describes a spiritual armor that comes from God. How can such spiritual armor protect you? What spiritual armor do you especially need today?

Pray

God of peace, thank you for your protection. Give me the resources I need to stand against the devil’s evil tricks and the wicked spiritual forces, and clothe me with your righteousness. Amen.

1 Chronicles 15:1-24 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

1 Chronicles 15:1-24: Chapter 13 informs us that David sought to bring the Covenant Box from Kiriath Jearim to Jerusalem, but the oxen hauling the cart on which the Covenant Box was placed stumbled. One of the men selected to guide the cart reached out and took hold of the Box and was killed. The Covenant Box then remained in the house of Obed Edom in the city of Gath for three months. Today we read that David once again prepares to bring the Covenant Box to Jerusalem, and he makes detailed arrangements for moving the Covenant Box.

Today’s Scripture: 1 Chronicles 15:14

The priests and the Levites purified themselves in order to move the Covenant Box of the LORD God of Israel.

Today’s Reading

1 For his own use, David built houses in David's City. He also prepared a place for God's Covenant Box and put up a tent for it. 2 Then he said, “Only Levites should carry the Covenant Box, because they are the ones the LORD chose to carry it and to serve him forever. ” 3 So David summoned all the people of Israel to Jerusalem in order to bring the Covenant Box to the place he had prepared for it. 4 Next he sent for the descendants of Aaron and for the Levites. 5 From the Levite clan of Kohath came Uriel, in charge of 120 members of his clan; 6 from the clan of Merari came Asaiah, in charge of 220; 7 from the clan of Gershon, Joel, in charge of 130; 8 from the clan of Elizaphan, Shemaiah, in charge of 200; 9 from the clan of Hebron, Eliel, in charge of 80; 10 and from the clan of Uzziel, Amminadab, in charge of 112. 11 David called in the priests Zadok and Abiathar and the six Levites, Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab. 12 He said to the Levites, “You are the leaders of the Levite clans. Purify yourselves and your fellow Levites, so that you can bring the Covenant Box of the LORD God of Israel to the place I have prepared for it. 13 Because you were not there to carry it the first time, the LORD our God punished us for not worshiping him as we should have done. ” 14 Then the priests and the Levites purified themselves in order to move the Covenant Box of the LORD God of Israel. 15 The Levites carried it on poles on their shoulders, as the LORD had commanded through Moses. 16 David commanded the leaders of the Levites to assign various Levites to sing and to play joyful music on harps and cymbals. 17-21 From the clans of singers they chose the following men to play the brass cymbals: Heman son of Joel, his relative Asaph son of Berechiah, and Ethan son of Kushaiah, of the clan of Merari. To assist them they chose the following Levites to play the high-pitched harps: Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah. To play the low-pitched harps they chose the following Levites: Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Azaziah, and the Temple guards, Obed Edom and Jeiel. 22 Because of his skill in music Chenaniah was chosen to be in charge of the levitical musicians. 23-24 Berechiah and Elkanah, along with Obed Edom and Jehiah, were chosen as guards for the Covenant Box. The priests Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer were chosen to blow trumpets in front of the Covenant Box.

Reflect

Why is bringing the Covenant Box to Jerusalem important to David? Whom does David select to carry the Covenant Box? What instructions are they given? What preparations for worship are made in your community of faith? How do you prepare yourself for worship?

Pray

Holy God, fill me with your spirit and purify my heart. May all my words and deeds this day serve as acts of worship, giving honor and glory to you. Amen.

1 Chronicles 15:25—16:7 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

1 Chronicles 15:25—16:7: David and leaders of Israel retrieve the Covenant Box from the house of Obed Edom where a celebration takes place. All the Israelites accompany the Box up to Jerusalem with shouts of joy and music.

Today’s Scripture: 1 Chronicles 15:28

All the Israelites accompanied the Covenant Box up to Jerusalem with shouts of joy, the sound of trumpets, horns, and cymbals, and the music of harps.

Today’s Reading

25 So King David, the leaders of Israel, and the military commanders went to the house of Obed Edom to get the Covenant Box, and they had a great celebration. 26 They sacrificed seven bulls and seven sheep, to make sure that God would help the Levites who were carrying the Covenant Box. 27 David was wearing a robe made of the finest linen, and so were the musicians, Chenaniah their leader, and the Levites who carried the Box. David also wore a linen ephod. 28 So all the Israelites accompanied the Covenant Box up to Jerusalem with shouts of joy, the sound of trumpets, horns, and cymbals, and the music of harps. 29 As the Box was being brought into the city, Michal, Saul's daughter, looked out of the window and saw King David dancing and leaping for joy, and she was disgusted with him. 1 They took the Covenant Box to the tent which David had prepared for it and put it inside. Then they offered sacrifices and fellowship offerings to God. 2 After David had finished offering the sacrifices, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD 3 and distributed food to them all. He gave each man and woman in Israel a loaf of bread, a piece of roasted meat, and some raisins. 4 David appointed some of the Levites to lead the worship of the LORD, the God of Israel, in front of the Covenant Box, by singing and praising him. 5 Asaph was appointed leader, with Zechariah as his assistant. Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed Edom, and Jeiel were to play harps. Asaph was to sound the cymbals, 6 and two priests, Benaiah and Jahaziel, were to blow trumpets regularly in front of the Covenant Box. 7 It was then that David first gave Asaph and the other Levites the responsibility for singing praises to the LORD.

Reflect

Based on today’s reading and the preparation details recorded in yesterday’s reading (1 Chronicles 15:1-24), how do you envision the procession as the Covenant Box was brought into Jerusalem? What did David do after offering sacrifices and blessing the people? What types of celebrations take place within your community of faith?

Pray

I sing praises to you, O Lord God, and glorify your holy name. Guide me each day by your Word. May you be praised forever and ever! Amen.

1 Chronicles 16:8-43 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

1 Chronicles 16:8-43: David offers a song of praise as the Covenant Box is brought to Jerusalem. His song incorporates portions of Psalms 105 and 106. The song recounts God’s promises and miraculous deeds and affirms God’s faithfulness and sovereignty.

Today’s Scripture: 1 Chronicles 16:34

Give thanks to the LORD, because he is good; his love is eternal.

Today’s Reading

8 Give thanks to the LORD, proclaim his greatness; tell the nations what he has done. 9 Sing praise to the LORD; tell the wonderful things he has done. 10 Be glad that we belong to him; let all who worship him rejoice! 11 Go to the LORD for help, and worship him continually. 12-13 You descendants of Jacob, God's servant, descendants of Israel, whom God chose, remember the miracles that God performed and the judgments that he gave. 14 The LORD is our God; his commands are for all the world. 15 Never forget God's covenant, which he made to last forever, 16 the covenant he made with Abraham, the promise he made to Isaac. 17 The LORD made a covenant with Jacob, one that will last forever. 18 “I will give you the land of Canaan,” he said. “It will be your own possession.” 19 God's people were few in number, strangers in the land of Canaan. 20 They wandered from country to country, from one kingdom to another. 21 But God let no one oppress them; to protect them, he warned the kings: 22 “Don't harm my chosen servants; do not touch my prophets. ” 23 Sing to the LORD, all the world! Proclaim every day the good news that he has saved us. 24 Proclaim his glory to the nations, his mighty deeds to all peoples. 25 The LORD is great and is to be highly praised; he is to be honored more than all the gods. 26 The gods of all other nations are only idols, but the LORD created the heavens. 27 Glory and majesty surround him, power and joy fill his Temple. 28 Praise the LORD, all people on earth, praise his glory and might. 29 Praise the LORD's glorious name; bring an offering and come into his Temple. Bow down before the Holy One when he appears; 30 tremble before him, all the earth! The earth is set firmly in place and cannot be moved. 31 Be glad, earth and sky! Tell the nations that the LORD is king. 32 Roar, sea, and every creature in you; be glad, fields, and everything in you! 33 The trees in the woods will shout for joy when the LORD comes to rule the earth. 34 Give thanks to the LORD, because he is good; his love is eternal. 35 Say to him, “Save us, O God our Savior; gather us together; rescue us from the nations, so that we may be thankful and praise your holy name. ” 36 Praise the LORD, the God of Israel! Praise him now and forever! Then all the people said, “Amen,” and praised the LORD. 37 King David put Asaph and the other Levites in permanent charge of the worship that was held at the place where the Covenant Box was kept. They were to perform their duties there day by day. 38 Obed Edom son of Jeduthun and sixty-eight men of his clan were to assist them. Hosah and Obed Edom were in charge of guarding the gates. 39 Zadok the priest and his fellow priests, however, were in charge of the worship of the LORD at the place of worship in Gibeon. 40 Every morning and evening they were to burn sacrifices whole on the altar in accordance with what was written in the Law which the LORD gave to Israel. 41 There with them were Heman and Jeduthun and the others who were specifically chosen to sing praises to the LORD for his eternal love. 42 Heman and Jeduthun also had charge of the trumpets and cymbals and the other instruments which were played when the songs of praise were sung. The members of Jeduthun's clan were in charge of guarding the gates. 43 Then everyone went home, and David went home to spend some time with his family.

Reflect

What promises of God are recalled in this song? Identify all the verses that include a reason for praising God. What verses are most meaningful to you? Why? In what ways have you experienced God’s faithfulness in your life?

Pray

I give thanks to you, O LORD, and proclaim your greatness. I come before you rejoicing and praise your holy and glorious name. Your love is eternal and your kingdom is forever. Amen.

1 Chronicles 17:1-27 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

1 Chronicles 17:1-27: David desires to build a “house” (temple) in which to place the Covenant Box, and the prophet Nathan delivers God’s response. David then offers a prayer of thanksgiving.

Today’s Scripture: 1 Chronicles 17:27

“I ask you to bless my descendants so that they will continue to enjoy your favor. You, LORD, have blessed them, and your blessing will rest on them forever.”

Today’s Reading

1 King David was now living in his palace. One day he sent for the prophet Nathan and said to him, “Here I am living in a house built of cedar, but the LORD's Covenant Box is kept in a tent! ” 2 Nathan answered, “Do whatever you have in mind, because God is with you.” 3 But that night God said to Nathan, 4 “Go and tell my servant David that I say to him, ‘You are not the one to build a temple for me to live in. 5 From the time I rescued the people of Israel from Egypt until now I have never lived in a temple; I have always lived in tents and moved from place to place. 6 In all my traveling with the people of Israel I never asked any of the leaders that I appointed why they had not built me a temple made of cedar. ’ 7 So tell my servant David that I, the LORD Almighty, say to him, ‘I took you from looking after sheep in the fields and made you the ruler of my people Israel. 8 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have defeated all your enemies as you advanced. I will make you as famous as the greatest leaders in the world. 9-10 I have chosen a place for my people Israel and have settled them there, where they will live without being oppressed any more. Ever since they entered this land they have been attacked by violent people, but this will not happen again. I promise to defeat all your enemies and to give you descendants. 11 When you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will make one of your sons king and will keep his kingdom strong. 12 He will be the one to build a temple for me, and I will make sure that his dynasty continues forever. 13 I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will not withdraw my support from him as I did from Saul, whom I removed so that you could be king. 14 I will put him in charge of my people and my kingdom forever. His dynasty will never end. ’ ” 15 Nathan told David everything that God had revealed to him. 16 Then King David went into the Tent of the LORD's presence, sat down, and prayed, “I am not worthy of what you have already done for me, LORD God, nor is my family. 17 Yet now you are doing even more; you have made promises about my descendants in the years to come, and you, LORD God, are already treating me like someone great. 18 What more can I say to you! You know me well, and yet you honor me, your servant. 19 It was your will and purpose to do this for me and to show me my future greatness. 20LORD, there is none like you; we have always known that you alone are God. 21 There is no other nation on earth like Israel, whom you rescued from slavery to make them your own people. The great and wonderful things you did for them spread your fame throughout the world. You rescued your people from Egypt and drove out other nations as your people advanced. 22 You have made Israel your own people forever, and you, LORD, have become their God. 23 And now, O LORD, fulfill for all time the promise you made about me and my descendants, and do what you said you would. 24 Your fame will be great, and people will forever say, ‘The LORD Almighty is God over Israel. ’ And you will preserve my dynasty for all time. 25 I have the courage to pray this prayer to you, my God, because you have revealed all this to me, your servant, and have told me that you will make my descendants kings. 26 You, LORD, are God, and you have made this wonderful promise to me. 27 I ask you to bless my descendants so that they will continue to enjoy your favor. You, LORD, have blessed them, and your blessing will rest on them forever. ”

Reflect

This passage includes a play on the word “house” (Hebrew: bayit) – which can refer to the house (temple) that David wants to build, or to a dynasty composed of David’s descendants. What message does the prophet Nathan bring to David? What does God promise? How does David respond? What does he ask of God? What promises of God are close to your heart?

Pray

God of promise, I know I belong to you. Rule in my heart forever. I long to serve you, and I glorify your holy name. Amen.

Revelation 4:1-11 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Revelation 4:1-11: The book of Revelation belongs to a kind of writing called apocalyptic literature. Apocalyptic writings begin to reveal the secrets of heaven and describe how human history will end. Today’s reading describes the One who is seated on a heavenly throne, surrounded by those singing praises to God who created all things.

Today’s Scripture: Revelation 4:8b

“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was, who is, and who is to come.”

Today’s Reading

1 At this point I had another vision and saw an open door in heaven. And the voice that sounded like a trumpet, which I had heard speaking to me before, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after this.” 2 At once the Spirit took control of me. There in heaven was a throne with someone sitting on it. 3 His face gleamed like such precious stones as jasper and carnelian, and all around the throne there was a rainbow the color of an emerald. 4 In a circle around the throne were twenty-four other thrones, on which were seated twenty-four elders dressed in white and wearing crowns of gold. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder. In front of the throne seven lighted torches were burning, which are the seven spirits of God. 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. Surrounding the throne on each of its sides, were four living creatures covered with eyes in front and behind. 7 The first one looked like a lion; the second looked like a bull; the third had a face like a human face; and the fourth looked like an eagle in flight. 8 Each one of the four living creatures had six wings, and they were covered with eyes, inside and out. Day and night they never stop singing: Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was, who is, and who is to come.” 9 The four living creatures sing songs of glory and honor and thanks to the one who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever. When they do so, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before the one who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives forever and ever. They throw their crowns down in front of the throne and say, 11 “Our Lord and God! You are worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. For you created all things, and by your will they were given existence and life.”

Reflect

What is happening around the throne? What are your thoughts when reading this passage? When do you experience God’s presence? How do you respond during such a time?

Pray

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, you alone are worthy to receive glory and honor. With all creation I praise your name forever and ever. Amen.

Revelation 7:1-17 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Revelation 7:1-17: Today’s reading offers a vision of 144,000 people from the twelve tribes of Israel, along with an enormous crowd of people from every race, tribe, nation, and language, all standing before the throne and praising God.

Today’s Scripture: Revelation 7:10

They called out in a loud voice: “Salvation comes from our God, who sits on the throne, and from the Lamb!”

Today’s Reading

1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds so that no wind should blow on the earth or the sea or against any tree. 2 And I saw another angel coming up from the east with the seal of the living God. He called out in a loud voice to the four angels to whom God had given the power to damage the earth and the sea. 3 The angel said, “Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees, until we mark the servants of our God with a seal on their foreheads.” 4 And I was told that the number of those who were marked with God's seal on their foreheads was 144,000. They were from the twelve tribes of Israel, 5-8 twelve thousand from each tribe: Judah, Reuben, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin. 9 After this I looked, and there was an enormous crowd—no one could count all the people! They were from every race, tribe, nation, and language, and they stood in front of the throne and of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. 10 They called out in a loud voice: “Salvation comes from our God, who sits on the throne, and from the Lamb!” 11 All the angels stood around the throne, the elders, and the four living creatures. Then they threw themselves face downward in front of the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen! Praise, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honor, power, and might belong to our God forever and ever! Amen!” 13 One of the elders asked me, “Who are these people dressed in white robes, and where do they come from?” 14 “I don't know, sir. You do,” I answered. He said to me, “These are the people who have come safely through the terrible persecution. They have washed their robes and made them white with the blood of the Lamb. 15 That is why they stand before God's throne and serve him day and night in his temple. He who sits on the throne will protect them with his presence. 16 Never again will they hunger or thirst; neither sun nor any scorching heat will burn them, 17 because the Lamb, who is in the center of the throne, will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. ”

Reflect

In this vision, what is happening before the throne? How do you envision what is described here? What does today’s reading teach you about God?

Pray

Lord God, with your heavenly chorus, I join in singing “Praise, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honor, power, and might belong to our God forever and ever! Amen!”

Revelation 14:1-20 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Revelation 14:1-20: Today’s reading opens with a vision of the Lamb and continues with a vision of how God will judge everyone. Those who are unfaithful to God will receive God’s punishment; the faithful are encouraged to endure and obey God’s commandments.

Today’s Scripture: Revelation 14:7b

“Honor God and praise his greatness! For the time has come for him to judge all people. Worship him who made heaven, earth, sea, and the springs of water!”

Today’s Reading

1 Then I looked, and there was the Lamb standing on Mount Zion; with him were 144,000 people who have his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a voice from heaven that sounded like a roaring waterfall, like a loud peal of thunder. It sounded like the music made by musicians playing their harps. 3 The 144,000 people stood before the throne, the four living creatures, and the elders; they were singing a new song, which only they could learn. Of the whole human race they are the only ones who have been redeemed. 4 They are the men who have kept themselves pure by not having sexual relations with women; they are virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been redeemed from the rest of the human race and are the first ones to be offered to God and to the Lamb. 5 They have never been known to tell lies; they are faultless. 6 Then I saw another angel flying high in the air, with an eternal message of Good News to announce to the peoples of the earth, to every race, tribe, language, and nation. 7 He said in a loud voice, “Honor God and praise his greatness! For the time has come for him to judge all people. Worship him who made heaven, earth, sea, and the springs of water!” 8 A second angel followed the first one, saying, “She has fallen! Great Babylon has fallen! She made all peoples drink her wine—the strong wine of her immoral lust!” 9 A third angel followed the first two, saying in a loud voice, “Those who worship the beast and its image and receive the mark on their forehead or on their hand 10 will themselves drink God's wine, the wine of his fury, which he has poured at full strength into the cup of his anger! All who do this will be tormented in fire and sulfur before the holy angels and the Lamb. 11 The smoke of the fire that torments them goes up forever and ever. There is no relief day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, for anyone who has the mark of its name. ” 12 This calls for endurance on the part of God's people, those who obey God's commandments and are faithful to Jesus. 13 Then I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Happy are those who from now on die in the service of the Lord!” “Yes indeed!” answers the Spirit. “They will enjoy rest from their hard work, because the results of their service go with them.” 14 Then I looked, and there was a white cloud, and sitting on the cloud was what looked like a human being, with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15 Then another angel came out from the temple and cried out in a loud voice to the one who was sitting on the cloud, “Use your sickle and reap the harvest, because the time has come; the earth is ripe for the harvest!” 16 Then the one who sat on the cloud swung his sickle on the earth, and the earth's harvest was reaped. 17 Then I saw another angel come out of the temple in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. 18 Then another angel, who is in charge of the fire, came from the altar. He shouted in a loud voice to the angel who had the sharp sickle, “Use your sickle, and cut the grapes from the vineyard of the earth, because the grapes are ripe!” 19 So the angel swung his sickle on the earth, cut the grapes from the vine, and threw them into the wine press of God's furious anger. 20 The grapes were squeezed out in the wine press outside the city, and blood came out of the wine press in a flood two hundred miles long and about five feet deep.

Reflect

What messages do the three angels bring (verses 6-11)? The reference to Babylon in verse 8 pertains to Rome. At that time, Rome was evil and caused other nations to be immoral. Reread verses 14-20. The prophets of Israel spoke of God’s people as a vineyard where grapes are grown (Isaiah 5) and compared God’s judgment on the people for their disobedience to the harvesting of grapes (Joel 3:13). How is that image used in today’s reading to describe what will happen to those who reject God?

Pray

Holy God, I honor you and praise your greatness. Draw me close to you and keep me strong in faith so that I may endure when tested and obey your commandments. Amen.

Revelation 19:1-21 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Revelation 19:1-21: Chapter 19 begins the concluding section of Revelation with a series of final visions. The wedding feast of the Lamb is celebrated. A rider astride a white horse appears, and the chapter concludes with a vision of God’s victory and the destruction of God’s enemies.

Today’s Scripture: Revelation 19:6b, 7a

“Praise God! For the Lord, our Almighty God, is King! Let us rejoice and be glad; let us praise his greatness!”

Today’s Reading

1 After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a large crowd of people in heaven, saying, “Praise God! Salvation, glory, and power belong to our God! 2 True and just are his judgments! He has condemned the prostitute who was corrupting the earth with her immorality. God has punished her because she killed his servants. ” 3 Again they shouted, “Praise God! The smoke from the flames that consume the great city goes up forever and ever!” 4 The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. They said, “Amen! Praise God!” 5 Then there came from the throne the sound of a voice, saying, “Praise our God, all his servants and all people, both great and small, who have reverence for him!” 6 Then I heard what sounded like a crowd, like the sound of a roaring waterfall, like loud peals of thunder. I heard them say, “Praise God! For the Lord, our Almighty God, is King! 7 Let us rejoice and be glad; let us praise his greatness! For the time has come for the wedding of the Lamb, and his bride has prepared herself for it. 8 She has been given clean shining linen to wear. ” (The linen is the good deeds of God's people.) 9 Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Happy are those who have been invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.” And the angel added, “These are the true words of God.” 10 I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “Don't do it! I am a servant together with you and with other believers, all those who hold to the truth that Jesus revealed. Worship God!” For the truth that Jesus revealed is what inspires the prophets. 11 Then I saw heaven open, and there was a white horse. Its rider is called Faithful and True; it is with justice that he judges and fights his battles. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and he wore many crowns on his head. He had a name written on him, but no one except himself knows what it is. 13 The robe he wore was covered with blood. His name is “The Word of God.” 14 The armies of heaven followed him, riding on white horses and dressed in clean white linen. 15 Out of his mouth came a sharp sword, with which he will defeat the nations. He will rule over them with a rod of iron, and he will trample out the wine in the wine press of the furious anger of the Almighty God. 16 On his robe and on his thigh was written the name: “King of kings and Lord of lords.” 17 Then I saw an angel standing on the sun. He shouted in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair: “Come and gather together for God's great feast! 18 Come and eat the flesh of kings, generals, and soldiers, the flesh of horses and their riders, the flesh of all people, slave and free, great and small! ” 19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered to fight against the one who was riding the horse and against his army. 20 The beast was taken prisoner, together with the false prophet who had performed miracles in his presence. (It was by those miracles that he had deceived those who had the mark of the beast and those who had worshiped the image of the beast.) The beast and the false prophet were both thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. 21 Their armies were killed by the sword that comes out of the mouth of the one who was riding the horse; and all the birds ate all they could of their flesh.

Reflect

The wedding feast celebrates the uniting of Christ (the Lamb) and his people (the bride). In the Old Testament, marriage is a way of describing God’s relationship with the people of Israel (see Isaiah 54:1-8). In the New Testament, the church is depicted as the wife of Christ (Ephesians 5:25). How is the wedding feast described? In verses 11-16, Christ is depicted as a military leader. How is he described?

Pray

Lord God, you are King of kings and Lord of lords. Your reign is eternal and I praise your greatness. Amen.

Revelation 20:1-15 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Revelation 20:1-15: John’s vision includes the binding and defeat of Satan and the final judgment. The references to Gog and Magog, mentioned in Ezekiel 38:2-16, pertain to a wicked ruler (Gog) from the land of Magog who was supposed to attack the people of Israel. In today’s reading, Gog and Magog are countries that represent worldly powers that are opposed to God and God’s people.

Today’s Scripture: Revelation 20:11

Then I saw a great white throne and the one who sits on it. Earth and heaven fled from his presence and were seen no more.

Today’s Reading

1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key of the abyss and a heavy chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent—that is, the Devil, or Satan—and chained him up for a thousand years. 3 The angel threw him into the abyss, locked it, and sealed it, so that he could not deceive the nations any more until the thousand years were over. After that he must be set loose for a little while. 4 Then I saw thrones, and those who sat on them were given the power to judge. I also saw the souls of those who had been executed because they had proclaimed the truth that Jesus revealed and the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or its image, nor had they received the mark of the beast on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and ruled as kings with Christ for a thousand years. 5 (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were over.) This is the first raising of the dead. 6 Happy and greatly blessed are those who are included in this first raising of the dead. The second death has no power over them; they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and they will rule with him for a thousand years. 7 After the thousand years are over, Satan will be set loose from his prison, 8 and he will go out to deceive the nations scattered over the whole world, that is, Gog and Magog. Satan will bring them all together for battle, as many as the grains of sand on the seashore. 9 They spread out over the earth and surrounded the camp of God's people and the city that he loves. But fire came down from heaven and destroyed them. 10 Then the Devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had already been thrown; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. 11 Then I saw a great white throne and the one who sits on it. Earth and heaven fled from his presence and were seen no more. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small alike, standing before the throne. Books were opened, and then another book was opened, the book of the living. The dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. 13 Then the sea gave up its dead. Death and the world of the dead also gave up the dead they held. And all were judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and the world of the dead were thrown into the lake of fire. (This lake of fire is the second death.) 15 Those who did not have their name written in the book of the living were thrown into the lake of fire.

Reflect

What takes place during the thousand years? According to Psalm 90:4 and 2 Peter 3:8, the thousand years are understood to be a measurement in God’s time, not human time. How do you interpret this span of time?

Pray

Almighty God, eternal are you and eternal is your reign. Because you have defeated the power of death, I have received from you the gift of eternal life. I thank and praise you, Lord God, forevermore. Amen.

Revelation 21:1-27 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Revelation 21:1-27: God has defeated Satan. John’s vision now describes God bringing in a new heaven and earth as well as a new city, which represents a renewal of the whole creation. God will dwell among the people; and pain, sorrow, and death will be no more.

Today’s Scripture: Revelation 21:7

Those who win the victory will receive this from me: I will be their God, and they will be my children.

Today’s Reading

1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth disappeared, and the sea vanished. 2 And I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared and ready, like a bride dressed to meet her husband. 3 I heard a loud voice speaking from the throne: “Now God's home is with people! He will live with them, and they shall be his people. God himself will be with them, and he will be their God. 4 He will wipe away all tears from their eyes. There will be no more death, no more grief or crying or pain. The old things have disappeared. ” 5 Then the one who sits on the throne said, “And now I make all things new!” He also said to me, “Write this, because these words are true and can be trusted.” 6 And he said, “It is done! I am the first and the last, the beginning and the end. To anyone who is thirsty I will give the right to drink from the spring of the water of life without paying for it. 7 Those who win the victory will receive this from me: I will be their God, and they will be my children. 8 But cowards, traitors, perverts, murderers, the immoral, those who practice magic, those who worship idols, and all liars—the place for them is the lake burning with fire and sulfur, which is the second death. ” 9 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came to me and said, “Come, and I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 The Spirit took control of me, and the angel carried me to the top of a very high mountain. He showed me Jerusalem, the Holy City, coming down out of heaven from God 11 and shining with the glory of God. The city shone like a precious stone, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates and with twelve angels in charge of the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of the people of Israel. 13 There were three gates on each side: three on the east, three on the south, three on the north, and three on the west. 14 The city's wall was built on twelve foundation stones, on which were written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 The angel who spoke to me had a gold measuring stick to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. 16 The city was perfectly square, as wide as it was long. The angel measured the city with his measuring stick: it was fifteen hundred miles long and was as wide and as high as it was long. 17 The angel also measured the wall, and it was 216 feet high, according to the standard unit of measure which he was using. 18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city itself was made of pure gold, as clear as glass. 19 The foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with all kinds of precious stones. The first foundation stone was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh yellow quartz, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chalcedony, the eleventh turquoise, the twelfth amethyst. 21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls; each gate was made from a single pearl. The street of the city was of pure gold, transparent as glass. 22 I did not see a temple in the city, because its temple is the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb. 23 The city has no need of the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God shines on it, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The peoples of the world will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their wealth into it. 25 The gates of the city will stand open all day; they will never be closed, because there will be no night there. 26 The greatness and the wealth of the nations will be brought into the city. 27 But nothing that is impure will enter the city, nor anyone who does shameful things or tells lies. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of the living will enter the city.

Reflect

Who is the “Bride, the wife of the Lamb” (verse 9)? How is the new Jerusalem described (verses 11-21)? How do you envision what is described in this chapter?

Revelation 22:1-21 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Revelation 22:1-21: John’s vision is a reminder that Jesus will come again and bless those who are faithful. They will eat the fruit from the tree of life and enter the Holy City. The faithful are to continue doing good and to go on being holy.

Today’s Scripture: Revelation 22:14

Happy are those who wash their robes clean and so have the right to eat the fruit from the tree of life and to go through the gates into the city.

Today’s Reading

1 The angel also showed me the river of the water of life, sparkling like crystal, and coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 and flowing down the middle of the city's street. On each side of the river was the tree of life, which bears fruit twelve times a year, once each month; and its leaves are for the healing of the nations. 3 Nothing that is under God's curse will be found in the city. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. 5 There shall be no more night, and they will not need lamps or sunlight, because the Lord God will be their light, and they will rule as kings forever and ever. 6 Then the angel said to me, “These words are true and can be trusted. And the Lord God, who gives his Spirit to the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must happen very soon.” 7 “Listen!” says Jesus. “I am coming soon! Happy are those who obey the prophetic words in this book!” 8 I, John, have heard and seen all these things. And when I finished hearing and seeing them, I fell down at the feet of the angel who had shown me these things, and I was about to worship him. 9 But he said to me, “Don't do it! I am a servant together with you and with your brothers the prophets and of all those who obey the words in this book. Worship God!” 10 And he said to me, “Do not keep the prophetic words of this book a secret, because the time is near when all this will happen. 11 Whoever is evil must go on doing evil, and whoever is filthy must go on being filthy; whoever is good must go on doing good, and whoever is holy must go on being holy. ” 12 “Listen!” says Jesus. “I am coming soon! I will bring my rewards with me, to give to each one according to what he has done. 13 I am the first and the last, the beginning and the end. ” 14 Happy are those who wash their robes clean and so have the right to eat the fruit from the tree of life and to go through the gates into the city. 15 But outside the city are the perverts and those who practice magic, the immoral and the murderers, those who worship idols and those who are liars both in words and deeds. 16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to announce these things to you in the churches. I am descended from the family of David; I am the bright morning star.” 17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come!” Everyone who hears this must also say, “Come!” Come, whoever is thirsty; accept the water of life as a gift, whoever wants it. 18 I, John, solemnly warn everyone who hears the prophetic words of this book: if any add anything to them, God will add to their punishment the plagues described in this book. 19 And if any take anything away from the prophetic words of this book, God will take away from them their share of the fruit of the tree of life and of the Holy City, which are described in this book. 20 He who gives his testimony to all this says, “Yes indeed! I am coming soon!” So be it. Come, Lord Jesus! 21 May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with everyone.

Reflect

John’s vision of the new creation includes a river of life-giving water and the tree of life (verses 1, 2, 14). The tree of life first appeared at the time of creation and the beginning of human history (Genesis 3:22). What is the significance of the tree of life in the midst of the new Jerusalem? Jesus’ final words are “Yes indeed! I am coming soon!”(verse 20). These words are also spoken in verses 7 and 12 and in Revelation 3:11. What does Jesus’ promise mean to you and how does it affect the way you live your life now?

Pray

Come, Lord Jesus! Lead me in your ways and prepare me to receive you in love. Lord of life, fill me with the faith and hope that brings true joy. Come, Lord Jesus! Amen.

Ezra 7:1-28 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Ezra 7:1-28: The book of Ezra describes the return of some of the Jewish exiles from Babylonia and the restoration of life and worship in Jerusalem. (The rebuilding and dedication of the Temple are described in chapters 5 and 6). In today’s reading, at the command of the Persian emperor Artaxerxes, Ezra leaves Babylonia with other Israelites and arrives in Jerusalem. The emperor gives Ezra a document, outlining instructions for maintaining the Temple and the worship life of the people.

Today’s Scripture: Ezra 7:23a

“You must be careful to provide everything which the God of Heaven requires for his Temple.”

Today’s Reading

1 Many years later, when Artaxerxes was emperor of Persia, there was a man named Ezra. He traced his ancestors back to Aaron, the High Priest, as follows: Ezra was the son of Seraiah, son of Azariah, son of Hilkiah, 2 son of Shallum, son of Zadok, son of Ahitub, 3 son of Amariah, son of Azariah, son of Meraioth, 4 son of Zerahiah, son of Uzzi, son of Bukki, 5 son of Abishua, son of Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron. 6-7 Ezra was a scholar with a thorough knowledge of the Law which the LORD, the God of Israel, had given to Moses. Because Ezra had the blessing of the LORD his God, the emperor gave him everything he asked for. In the seventh year of the reign of Artaxerxes, Ezra set out from Babylonia for Jerusalem with a group of Israelites which included priests, Levites, Temple musicians, Temple guards, and workers. 8-9 They left Babylonia on the first day of the first month, and with God's help they arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month. 10 Ezra had devoted his life to studying the Law of the LORD, to practicing it, and to teaching all its laws and regulations to the people of Israel. 11 Emperor Artaxerxes gave the following document to Ezra, the priest and scholar, who had a thorough knowledge of the laws and commands which the LORD had given to Israel:

12 “From Emperor Artaxerxes to the priest Ezra, scholar in the Law of the God of Heaven.

13 I command that throughout my empire all the Israelite people, priests, and Levites that so desire be permitted to go with you to Jerusalem.

14 I, together with my seven counselors, send you to investigate the conditions in Jerusalem and Judah in order to see how well the Law of your God, which has been entrusted to you, is being obeyed.

15 You are to take with you the gold and silver offerings which I and my counselors desire to give to the God of Israel, whose Temple is in Jerusalem.

16 You are also to take all the silver and gold which you collect throughout the province of Babylon and the offerings which the Israelite people and their priests give for the Temple of their God in Jerusalem.

17 You are to spend this money carefully and buy bulls, rams, lambs, grain, and wine and offer them on the altar of the Temple in Jerusalem.

18 You may use the silver and gold that is left over for whatever you and your people desire, in accordance with the will of your God.

19 You are to present to God in Jerusalem all the utensils that have been given to you for use in the Temple services.

20 And anything else which you need for the Temple, you may get from the royal treasury.

21 I command all the treasury officials in West-of-Euphrates Province to provide promptly for Ezra, the priest and scholar in the Law of the God of Heaven, everything he asks you for,

22 up to a limit of 7,500 pounds of silver, 500 bushels of wheat, 550 gallons of wine, 550 gallons of olive oil, and as much salt as needed.

23 You must be careful to provide everything which the God of Heaven requires for his Temple, and so make sure that he is never angry with me or with those who reign after me.

24 You are forbidden to collect any taxes from the priests, Levites, musicians, guards, workers, or anyone else connected with this Temple.

25 You, Ezra, using the wisdom which your God has given you, are to appoint administrators and judges to govern all the people in West-of-Euphrates who live by the Law of your God. You must teach that Law to anyone who does not know it.

26 If any disobey the laws of your God or the laws of the empire, they are to be punished promptly: by death or by exile or by confiscation of their property or by imprisonment.”

27 Ezra said, “Praise the LORD, the God of our ancestors! He has made the emperor willing to honor in this way the Temple of the LORD in Jerusalem. 28 By God's grace I have won the favor of the emperor, of his counselors, and of all his powerful officials; the LORD my God has given me courage, and I have been able to persuade many of the heads of the clans of Israel to return with me. ”

Reflect

How is Ezra described? What responsibility does the Persian emperor Artaxerxes assign to Ezra? Why would the emperor have chosen Ezra for this task? What is Ezra instructed to do? How are responsibilities assigned within your community of faith and what tasks are needed to ensure the ongoing worship life of your faith community? Reread verses 27 and 28. For what does Ezra praise God? How will you praise God today?

Pray

I praise you, Lord God, today for ________________. Give me courage this day to speak your Word and fill me with your wisdom. Amen.

Nehemiah 8:1-18 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Nehemiah 8:1-18: Emperor Artaxerxes of Persia permitted Nehemiah to return to Jerusalem. Nehemiah served as governor of Judah, and he took charge of having the walls of Jerusalem rebuilt (see chapters 2 – 6). When all the people were settled, they gathered in Jerusalem to hear Ezra give a public reading of the Law. The Levite priests, along with Ezra and Nehemiah, explained the Law to the people. Then the people were told to celebrate, concluding with the Festival of Shelters.

Today’s Scripture: Nehemiah 8:10b

“Today is holy to our Lord, so don’t be sad. The joy that the LORD gives you will make you strong.”

Today’s Reading

1 By the seventh month the people of Israel were all settled in their towns. On the first day of that month they all assembled in Jerusalem, in the square just inside the Water Gate. They asked Ezra, the priest and scholar of the Law which the LORD had given Israel through Moses, to get the book of the Law. 2 So Ezra brought it to the place where the people had gathered—men, women, and the children who were old enough to understand. 3 There in the square by the gate he read the Law to them from dawn until noon, and they all listened attentively. 4 Ezra was standing on a wooden platform that had been built for the occasion. The following men stood at his right: Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and the following stood at his left: Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5 As Ezra stood there on the platform high above the people, they all kept their eyes fixed on him. As soon as he opened the book, they all stood up. 6 Ezra said, “Praise the LORD, the great God! ” All the people raised their arms in the air and answered, “Amen! Amen!” They knelt in worship, with their faces to the ground. 7 Then they rose and stood in their places, and the following Levites explained the Law to them: Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah. 8 They gave an oral translation of God's Law and explained it so that the people could understand it. 9 When the people heard what the Law required, they were so moved that they began to cry. So Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra, the priest and scholar of the Law, and the Levites who were explaining the Law told all the people, “This day is holy to the LORD your God, so you are not to mourn or cry. 10 Now go home and have a feast. Share your food and wine with those who don't have enough. Today is holy to our Lord, so don't be sad. The joy that the LORD gives you will make you strong. ” 11 The Levites went around calming the people and telling them not to be sad on such a holy day. 12 So all the people went home and ate and drank joyfully and shared what they had with others, because they understood what had been read to them. 13 The next day the heads of the clans, together with the priests and the Levites, went to Ezra to study the teachings of the Law. 14 They discovered that the Law, which the LORD gave through Moses, ordered the people of Israel to live in temporary shelters during the Festival of Shelters. 15 So they gave the following instructions and sent them all through Jerusalem and the other cities and towns: “Go out to the hills and get branches from pines, olives, myrtles, palms, and other trees to make shelters according to the instructions written in the Law.” 16 So the people got branches and built shelters on the flat roofs of their houses, in their yards, in the Temple courtyard, and in the public squares by the Water Gate and by the Ephraim Gate. 17 All the people who had come back from captivity built shelters and lived in them. This was the first time it had been done since the days of Joshua son of Nun, and everybody was excited and happy. 18 From the first day of the festival to the last they read a part of God's Law every day. They celebrated for seven days, and on the eighth day there was a closing ceremony, as required in the Law.

Reflect

Why did Ezra, Nehemiah, and the priests explain the Law to the people? What or who helps you to understand the Scriptures? Today’s reading concludes with a description of the Festival of Shelters which commemorates the wilderness wanderings following the exodus from Egypt. The shelters are constructed of myrtle, olive, and palm branches as symbols of God’s protection, and the people live in these shelters for seven days to remember the wandering of their ancestors in the desert and God’s care of them at that time. In what ways are events in the worship life of your community of faith commemorated?

Lord God, as I read your Word, give me eyes and ears to understand your teachings. With joy I feast today on your Word. In your holy name I pray, Amen.

Nehemiah 12:24-47 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Nehemiah 12:24-47: Nehemiah oversees the dedication of the rebuilt wall of Jerusalem. He organizes two processions to march around the city in opposite directions, and both processions end up in the area of the Temple. Officials are put in charge to supervise contributions for the Temple and the Levite priests.

Today’s Scripture: Nehemiah 12:43b

The people were full of joy because God had made them very happy.

Today’s Reading

24 Under the direction of Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Jeshua, Binnui, and Kadmiel, the Levites were organized into groups. Two groups at a time praised God responsively and gave thanks to him, in accordance with the instructions given by King David, the man of God. 25 The following Temple guards were in charge of guarding the storerooms by the gates to the Temple: Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub. 26 These people lived during the time of Joiakim, the son of Joshua and grandson of Jehozadak, and the time of Nehemiah the governor, and the time of Ezra, the priest who was a scholar of the Law. 27 When the city wall of Jerusalem was dedicated, the Levites were brought in from wherever they were living, so that they could join in celebrating the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals and harps. 28 The Levite families of singers gathered from the area where they had settled around Jerusalem and from the towns around Netophah, 29 and from Bethgilgal, Geba, and Azmaveth. 30 The priests and the Levites performed ritual purification for themselves, the people, the gates, and the city wall. 31 I assembled the leaders of Judah on top of the wall and put them in charge of two large groups to march around the city, giving thanks to God. The first group went to the right on top of the wall toward the Rubbish Gate. 32 Hoshaiah marched behind the singers, followed by half the leaders of Judah. 33-35 The following priests, blowing trumpets, marched next: Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, and Jeremiah. Next came Zechariah, the son of Jonathan and grandson of Shemaiah. (His ancestors also included Mattaniah, Micaiah, and Zaccur, of the clan of Asaph.) 36 He was followed by other members of his clan—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani—all of whom carried musical instruments of the kind played by King David, the man of God. Ezra the scholar led this group in the procession. 37 At the Fountain Gate they went up the steps that led to David's City, past David's palace, and back to the wall at the Water Gate, on the east side of the city. 38 The other group of those who gave thanks went to the left along the top of the wall, and I followed with half of the people. We marched past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall, 39 and from there we went past Ephraim Gate, Jeshanah Gate, the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel, and the Tower of the Hundred, to the Sheep Gate. We ended our march near the gate to the Temple. 40 So both the groups that were giving thanks to God reached the Temple area. In addition to the leaders who were with me, 41 my group included the following priests, blowing trumpets: Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah; 42 and they were followed by Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer. The singers, led by Jezrahiah, sang at the top of their voices. 43 That day many sacrifices were offered, and the people were full of joy because God had made them very happy. The women and the children joined in the celebration, and the noise they all made could be heard for miles. 44 At that time men were put in charge of the storerooms where contributions for the Temple were kept, including the tithes and the first grain and fruit that ripened each year. These men were responsible for collecting from the farms near the various cities the contributions for the priests and the Levites which the Law required. All the people of Judah were pleased with the priests and the Levites, 45 because they performed the ceremonies of purification and the other rituals that God had commanded. The Temple musicians and the Temple guards also performed their duties in accordance with the regulations made by King David and his son Solomon. 46 From the time of King David and the musician Asaph long ago, the musicians have led songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. 47 In the time of Zerubbabel and also in the time of Nehemiah, all the people of Israel gave daily gifts for the support of the Temple musicians and the Temple guards. The people gave a sacred offering to the Levites, and the Levites gave the required portion to the priests.

Reflect

Describe the celebration that took place at the dedication ceremony. How do you envision this celebration? What celebrations take place within your community of faith?

Pray

Holy God, my heart is filled with joy because of your faithfulness and steadfast love for me. I praise your holy name. May all I say and do today be an act of worship that gives glory to you. Amen.

Psalm 92 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Psalm 92: This psalm is a song written for use on the Sabbath, the day for rest and worship (Exodus 20:8-11; Deuteronomy 5:12-15). It celebrates God’s goodness and righteousness.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 92:1

How good it is to give thanks to you, O LORD, to sing in your honor, O Most High God.

Today’s Reading

1 How good it is to give thanks to you, O LORD, to sing in your honor, O Most High God, 2 to proclaim your constant love every morning and your faithfulness every night, 3 with the music of stringed instruments and with melody on the harp. 4 Your mighty deeds, O LORD, make me glad; because of what you have done, I sing for joy. 5 How great are your actions, LORD! How deep are your thoughts! 6 This is something a fool cannot know; someone who is stupid cannot understand: 7 the wicked may grow like weeds, those who do wrong may prosper; yet they will be totally destroyed, 8 because you, LORD, are supreme forever. 9 We know that your enemies will die, and all the wicked will be defeated. 10 You have made me as strong as a wild ox; you have blessed me with happiness. 11 I have seen the defeat of my enemies and heard the cries of the wicked. 12 The righteous will flourish like palm trees; they will grow like the cedars of Lebanon. 13 They are like trees planted in the house of the LORD, that flourish in the Temple of our God, 14 that still bear fruit in old age and are always green and strong. 15 This shows that the LORD is just, that there is no wrong in my protector.

Reflect

This psalm, in addition to being a song of praise, is also written in the wisdom tradition. Reread verses 5-8 and 12-15. How are the wicked described? What is their fate? How are the righteous described? What does it mean to “flourish”? What does verse 15 affirm? You may wish to compare these verses with Psalm 1 and note the similarities. Many of the psalms were intended to be sung as part of the worship in the Temple in Jerusalem. How are psalms used in your community of faith?

Pray

Most High God, I proclaim your constant love every morning and your faithfulness every night. With you, O God, I flourish like a palm tree, rooted in you and growing strong in faith. I sing your praises and declare your goodness to me. Amen.

Psalm 96 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Psalm 96: This psalm is a song that celebrates God as the supreme king over all the earth who rules with justice and fairness.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 96:10

Say to all the nations, “The LORD is king! The earth is set firmly in place and cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with justice.”

Today’s Reading

1 Sing a new song to the LORD! Sing to the LORD, all the world! 2 Sing to the LORD, and praise him! Proclaim every day the good news that he has saved us. 3 Proclaim his glory to the nations, his mighty deeds to all peoples. 4 The LORD is great and is to be highly praised; he is to be honored more than all the gods. 5 The gods of all other nations are only idols, but the LORD created the heavens. 6 Glory and majesty surround him; power and beauty fill his Temple. 7 Praise the LORD, all people on earth; praise his glory and might. 8 Praise the LORD's glorious name; bring an offering and come into his Temple. 9 Bow down before the Holy One when he appears; tremble before him, all the earth! 10 Say to all the nations, “The LORD is king! The earth is set firmly in place and cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with justice.” 11 Be glad, earth and sky! Roar, sea, and every creature in you; 12 be glad, fields, and everything in you! The trees in the woods will shout for joy 13 when the LORD comes to rule the earth. He will rule the peoples of the world with justice and fairness.

Reflect

How does the psalm writer describe the LORD? Identify all the verses that speak of joy and praise. The psalm writer encourages the singing of a “new song to the LORD” (verse 1). What “new song” will you sing to God today?

Pray

Sovereign God, with joy I sing praises to you and proclaim the good news of your salvation. Glorious and mighty are you! I sing anew to you each day and declare your everlasting love. Amen.

Psalm 97 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Psalm 97: As king, God rules the whole universe which he created. On earth, God rules the nations. In this psalm, God is celebrated as one who rules with righteousness and justice.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 97:12b

Remember what the holy God has done, and give thanks to him.

Today’s Reading

1 The LORD is king! Earth, be glad! Rejoice, you islands of the seas! 2 Clouds and darkness surround him; he rules with righteousness and justice. 3 Fire goes in front of him and burns up his enemies around him. 4 His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees it and trembles. 5 The hills melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. 6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the nations see his glory. 7 Everyone who worships idols is put to shame; all the gods bow down before the LORD. 8 The people of Zion are glad, and the cities of Judah rejoice because of your judgments, O LORD. 9LORD Almighty, you are ruler of all the earth; you are much greater than all the gods. 10 The LORD loves those who hate evil; he protects the lives of his people; he rescues them from the power of the wicked. 11 Light shines on the righteous, and gladness on the good. 12 All you that are righteous be glad because of what the LORD has done! Remember what the holy God has done, and give thanks to him.

Reflect

In this psalm, the writer encourages us to “remember what the holy God has done” and to give God thanks. What memories do you have of what God has done for you? For what will you thank God today?

Pray

Lord God Almighty, you are my king. Reign in my heart forever. May the light of your love shine on me. I praise your glorious name and thank you for _____________________ Amen.

Psalm 98 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Psalm 98: This psalm is another song of praise that celebrates God’s faithfulness, justice and fairness.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 98:8, 9a

Clap your hands, you rivers; you hills, sing together with joy before the LORD, because he comes to rule the earth.

Today’s Reading

1 Sing a new song to the LORD; he has done wonderful things! By his own power and holy strength he has won the victory. 2 The LORD announced his victory; he made his saving power known to the nations. 3 He kept his promise to the people of Israel with loyalty and constant love for them. All people everywhere have seen the victory of our God. 4 Sing for joy to the LORD, all the earth; praise him with songs and shouts of joy! 5 Sing praises to the LORD! Play music on the harps! 6 Blow trumpets and horns, and shout for joy to the LORD, our king. 7 Roar, sea, and every creature in you; sing, earth, and all who live on you! 8 Clap your hands, you rivers; you hills, sing together with joy before the LORD, 9 because he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the peoples of the world with justice and fairness.

Reflect

This psalm is similar to Psalm 96 and calls upon creation to join in praising God (verses 7, 8). Verse 9 declares that God rules with justice and fairness, the same words used at the end of Psalm 96. If you are familiar with the words to the Christmas carol, “Joy to the World,” you may wish to compare the words of that carol with Psalm 98 and note the similarities. Reread verses 4-6. What instructions are given for worshiping and praising the LORD? How is joy and praise expressed in your community of faith?

Pray

I sing for joy, O Lord, because of your steadfast love and faithfulness. My heart is in tune with the music of your teachings. I trust in your promises and praise your holy name. Amen.

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Psalm 100: This psalm is a hymn of praise that acknowledges God as our Creator and us as God’s people. It affirms our reasons for thanking and praising God.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 100:5

The LORD is good; his love is eternal and his faithfulness lasts forever.

Today’s Reading

1 Sing to the LORD, all the world! 2 Worship the LORD with joy; come before him with happy songs! 3 Acknowledge that the LORD is God. He made us, and we belong to him; we are his people, we are his flock. 4 Enter the Temple gates with thanksgiving; go into its courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise him. 5 The LORD is good; his love is eternal and his faithfulness lasts forever.

Pray

Lord, you indeed are good and your faithfulness lasts forever. Gather us all into your flock and renew and refresh us with your life-giving Word. I thank and praise you for your mercy, love, and care. Amen.

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Psalm 111: In today’s psalm, the writer lists the virtues of the LORD and reminds us that the LORD is to be praised forever.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 111:4

The LORD does not let us forget his wonderful actions; he is kind and merciful.

Today’s Reading

1 Praise the LORD! With all my heart I will thank the LORD in the assembly of his people. 2 How wonderful are the things the LORD does! All who are delighted with them want to understand them. 3 All he does is full of honor and majesty; his righteousness is eternal. 4 The LORD does not let us forget his wonderful actions; he is kind and merciful. 5 He provides food for those who honor him; he never forgets his covenant. 6 He has shown his power to his people by giving them the lands of foreigners. 7 In all he does he is faithful and just; all his commands are dependable. 8 They last for all time; they were given in truth and righteousness. 9 He set his people free and made an eternal covenant with them. Holy and mighty is he! 10 The way to become wise is to honor the LORD; he gives sound judgment to all who obey his commands. He is to be praised forever.

Today’s reading teaches why God is worthy to be praised. How is God described in this psalm? How do you experience God’s faithfulness? Why do you praise God?

Psalm 115 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Praise and Thanksgiving

Introduction

Psalm 115: The psalm writer begins by giving glory to God, followed by an attack on idolatry, and then calling upon the people to trust in the LORD.

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 115:11

Trust in the LORD, all you that worship him. He helps you and protects you.

Today’s Reading

1 To you alone, O LORD, to you alone, and not to us, must glory be given because of your constant love and faithfulness. 2 Why should the nations ask us, “Where is your God?” 3 Our God is in heaven; he does whatever he wishes. 4 Their gods are made of silver and gold, formed by human hands. 5 They have mouths, but cannot speak, and eyes, but cannot see. 6 They have ears, but cannot hear, and noses, but cannot smell. 7 They have hands, but cannot feel, and feet, but cannot walk; they cannot make a sound. 8 May all who made them and who trust in them become like the idols they have made. 9 Trust in the LORD, you people of Israel. He helps you and protects you. 10 Trust in the LORD, you priests of God. He helps you and protects you. 11 Trust in the LORD, all you that worship him. He helps you and protects you. 12 The LORD remembers us and will bless us; he will bless the people of Israel and all the priests of God. 13 He will bless everyone who honors him, the great and the small alike. 14 May the LORD give you children— you and your descendants! 15 May you be blessed by the LORD, who made heaven and earth! 16 Heaven belongs to the LORD alone, but he gave the earth to us humans. 17 The LORD is not praised by the dead, by any who go down to the land of silence. 18 But we, the living, will give thanks to him now and forever. Praise the LORD!

Reflect

Psalm 115 is written as a liturgical prayer. Three times in verses 9-11 there is an exhortation to trust in the LORD because the LORD offers help and protection. When have you experienced God’s help and protection? Verses 12 and 13 serve as a response to verses 9-11. How do these verses express trust in the LORD?

Pray

To you alone, O LORD, I give glory because of your constant love and faithfulness. I place my trust in you, and I will give you thanks now and forever. Amen.

Matthew 24:29-44 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Joy

Introduction

Matthew 24:29-44: Jesus tells his followers to be ready for the coming of the Son of Man because no one knows the day or hour. Christians interpret the coming of the Son of Man as Christ’s Second Coming.

Today’s Scripture: Matthew 24:42

Watch out, then, because you do not know what day your Lord will come.

Today’s Reading

29 Soon after the trouble of those days, the sun will grow dark, the moon will no longer shine, the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers in space will be driven from their courses. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky; and all the peoples of earth will weep as they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 The great trumpet will sound, and he will send out his angels to the four corners of the earth, and they will gather his chosen people from one end of the world to the other. 32 Let the fig tree teach you a lesson. When its branches become green and tender and it starts putting out leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 In the same way, when you see all these things, you will know that the time is near, ready to begin. 34 Remember that all these things will happen before the people now living have all died. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 36 No one knows, however, when that day and hour will come—neither the angels in heaven nor the Son; the Father alone knows. 37 The coming of the Son of Man will be like what happened in the time of Noah. 38 In the days before the flood people ate and drank, men and women married, up to the very day Noah went into the boat; 39 yet they did not realize what was happening until the flood came and swept them all away. That is how it will be when the Son of Man comes. 40 At that time two men will be working in a field: one will be taken away, the other will be left behind. 41 Two women will be at a mill grinding meal: one will be taken away, the other will be left behind. 42 Watch out, then, because you do not know what day your Lord will come. 43 If the owner of a house knew the time when the thief would come, you can be sure that he would stay awake and not let the thief break into his house. 44 So then, you also must always be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you are not expecting him.

Reflect

How does Jesus describe the coming of the Son of Man? Why does Jesus tell his followers to be watchful? How do you prepare for the unexpected? What does this passage say to you with regard to living faithfully?

Pray

Lord Jesus, as I await your coming in power and glory, keep me faithful. Open my heart to be ever ready to receive and welcome you. Amen.

Matthew 25:1-13 (Good News Translation)

God’s Word: Source of Joy

Introduction

Matthew 25:1-13: Today’s reading is a continuation of what is described as Jesus’ apocalyptic / judgment discourse (which began in Matthew 23). Here Jesus describes the Kingdom of heaven by means of a parable about ten young women or ten bridesmaids.

Today’s Scripture: Matthew 25:13

And Jesus concluded, “Watch out, then, because you do not know the day or the hour.”

Today’s Reading

1 At that time the Kingdom of heaven will be like this. Once there were ten young women who took their oil lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and the other five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any extra oil with them, 4 while the wise ones took containers full of oil for their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was late in coming, so they began to nod and fall asleep. 6 It was already midnight when the cry rang out, “Here is the bridegroom! Come and meet him!” 7 The ten young women woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 Then the foolish ones said to the wise ones, “Let us have some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.” 9 “No, indeed,” the wise ones answered, “there is not enough for you and for us. Go to the store and buy some for yourselves.” 10 So the foolish ones went off to buy some oil; and while they were gone, the bridegroom arrived. The five who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was closed. 11 Later the others arrived. “Sir, sir! Let us in!” they cried out. 12 “Certainly not! I don't know you,” the bridegroom answered. ” 13 And Jesus concluded, “Watch out, then, because you do not know the day or the hour.

Reflect

Yesterday’s reading concluded with Jesus exhorting his followers to be ready for his coming. Today’s reading also concludes with a similar exhortation. What can you learn from the actions of the ten women in today’s reading? What are the consequences of being ready or not ready for Jesus’ return? In what ways can you “watch” and “be ready” for Jesus?

Pray

Lord Jesus, teach me to be a faithful disciple, always watchful and ready and obedient to your will. Amen.
