He compares God to a fortress, a shield, a place of protection, and more. He praises God for saving him from his enemies, and recounts a dramatic narrative of danger and rescue. Today’s Scripture: 2 Samuel 22:2 The LORD is my protector; he is my strong fortress. Today’s Reading 1 When the LORD saved David from Saul and his other enemies, David sang this song to the LORD: 2 The LORD is my protector; he is my strong fortress. 3 My God is my protection, and with him I am safe. He protects me like a shield; he defends me and keeps me safe. He is my savior; he protects me and saves me from violence. 4 I call to the LORD, and he saves me from my enemies. Praise the LORD! 5 The waves of death were all around me; the waves of destruction rolled over me. 6 The danger of death was around me, and the grave set its trap for me. 7 In my trouble I called to the LORD; I called to my God for help. In his temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. 8 Then the earth trembled and shook; the foundations of the sky rocked and quivered because God was angry! 9 Smoke poured out of his nostrils, a consuming flame and burning coals from his mouth. 10 He tore the sky open and came down, with a dark cloud under his feet. 11 He flew swiftly on his winged creature; he traveled on the wings of the wind. 12 He covered himself with darkness; thick clouds, full of water, surrounded him; 13 burning coals flamed up from the lightning before him. 14 Then the LORD thundered from the sky, and the voice of Almighty God was heard. 15 He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies; with flashes of lightning he sent them running. 16 The floor of the ocean was laid bare, and the foundations of the earth were uncovered when the LORD rebuked his enemies and roared at them in anger. 17 The LORD reached down from above and took hold of me; he pulled me out of the deep waters. 18 He rescued me from my powerful enemies and from all those who hate me— they were too strong for me. 19 When I was in trouble, they attacked me, but the LORD protected me. 20 He helped me out of danger; he saved me because he was pleased with me. 21 The LORD rewards me because I do what is right; he blesses me because I am innocent. 22 I have obeyed the law of the LORD; I have not turned away from my God. 23 I have observed all his laws; I have not disobeyed his commands. 24 He knows that I am faultless, that I have kept myself from doing wrong. 25 And so he rewards me because I do what is right, because he knows that I am innocent. 26 O LORD, you are faithful to those who are faithful to you, and completely good to those who are perfect. 27 You are pure to those who are pure, but hostile to those who are wicked. 28 You save those who are humble, but you humble those who are proud. Reflect David’s victory song, one of the oldest major poems in the Jewish Scriptures, was also collected in a slightly different form in Psalm 18. In verses 21-25, David makes it clear that he thought the LORD supported him because he was innocent by God’s standards and because he obeyed the LORD. Does this sound like boasting? Why or why not? Pray Mighty God, you are my rock, my fortress, and my protector. You are the place where I am safe. I praise you and thank you for the ways in which you protect and care for me. Amen. David praises God’s loyalty and faithfulness. He says that God’s ways are perfect and God’s words are dependable. He goes on to describe his battles with his enemies and the ways in which God saved him. Today’s Scripture: 2 Samuel 22:33 This God is my strong refuge; he makes my pathway safe. Today’s Reading 29 You, LORD, are my light; you dispel my darkness. 30 You give me strength to attack my enemies and power to overcome their defenses. 31 This God—how perfect are his deeds, how dependable his words! He is like a shield for all who seek his protection. 32 The LORD alone is God; God alone is our defense. 33 This God is my strong refuge; he makes my pathway safe. 34 He makes me sure-footed as a deer; he keeps me safe on the mountains. 35 He trains me for battle, so that I can use the strongest bow. 36 O LORD, you protect me and save me; your help has made me great. 37 You have kept me from being captured, and I have never fallen. 38 I pursue my enemies and defeat them; I do not stop until I destroy them. 39 I strike them down, and they cannot rise; they lie defeated before me. 40 You give me strength for the battle and victory over my enemies. 41 You make my enemies run from me; I destroy those who hate me. 42 They look for help, but no one saves them; they call to the LORD, but he does not answer. 43 I crush them, and they become like dust; I trample on them like mud in the streets. 44 You saved me from my rebellious people and maintained my rule over the nations; people I did not know have now become my subjects. 45 Foreigners bow before me; when they hear me, they obey. 46 They lose their courage and come trembling from their fortresses. 47 The LORD lives! Praise my defender! Proclaim the greatness of the strong God who saves me! 48 He gives me victory over my enemies; he subdues the nations under me 49 and saves me from my foes. O LORD, you give me victory over my enemies and protect me from violent men. 50 And so I praise you among the nations; I sing praises to you. 51 God gives great victories to his king; he shows constant love to the one he has chosen, to David and his descendants forever. Solomon brings the Covenant Box to the Temple. The priests carry it into the Most Holy Place, and God’s glory shines through the Temple. Then Solomon speaks to the people, praising God and explaining his actions. Today’s Scripture: 1 Kings 8:12 Solomon prayed “You, LORD, have placed the sun in the sky, yet you have chosen to live in clouds and darkness.” Today’s Reading 1 Then King Solomon summoned all the leaders of the tribes and clans of Israel to come to him in Jerusalem in order to take the LORD's Covenant Box from Zion, David's City, to the Temple. 2 They all assembled during the Festival of Shelters in the seventh month, in the month of Ethanim. 3 When all the leaders had gathered, the priests lifted the Covenant Box 4 and carried it to the Temple. The Levites and the priests also moved the Tent of the LORD's presence and all its equipment to the Temple. 5 King Solomon and all the people of Israel assembled in front of the Covenant Box and sacrificed a large number of sheep and cattle—too many to count. 6 Then the priests carried the Covenant Box into the Temple and put it in the Most Holy Place, beneath the winged creatures. 7 Their outstretched wings covered the box and the poles it was carried by. 8 The ends of the poles could be seen by anyone standing directly in front of the Most Holy Place, but from nowhere else. (The poles are still there today.) 9 There was nothing inside the Covenant Box except the two stone tablets which Moses had placed there at Mount Sinai, when the LORD made a covenant with the people of Israel as they were coming from Egypt. 10 As the priests were leaving the Temple, it was suddenly filled with a cloud 11 shining with the dazzling light of the LORD's presence, and they could not go back in to perform their duties. 12 Then Solomon prayed: “You, LORD, have placed the sun in the sky, yet you have chosen to live in clouds and darkness. 13 Now I have built a majestic temple for you, a place for you to live in forever.” 14 As the people stood there, King Solomon turned to face them, and he asked God's blessing on them. 15 He said, “Praise the LORD God of Israel! He has kept the promise he made to my father David, when he told him, 16 “From the time I brought my people out of Egypt, I have not chosen any city in all the land of Israel in which a temple should be built where I would be worshiped. But I chose you, David, to rule my people.” ” 17 And Solomon continued, “My father David planned to build a temple for the worship of the LORD God of Israel, 18 but the LORD said to him, ‘You were right in wanting to build a temple for me, 19 but you will never build it. It is your son, your own son, who will build my temple. ’ 20 And now the LORD has kept his promise. I have succeeded my father as king of Israel, and I have built the Temple for the worship of the LORD God of Israel. 21 I have also provided a place in the Temple for the Covenant Box containing the stone tablets of the covenant which the LORD made with our ancestors when he brought them out of Egypt. ” Reflect The Covenant Box was the acacia wood box that accompanied the Israelites on their wilderness wanderings in the time of Moses. It contained the two flat stones that had the Ten Commandments written on them. This box was sacred to God’s people. In your community of faith, are there objects or places that you consider to be sacred? What are they? Pray Holy Lord, you inhabit the heavens and the earth, filling them with your light and love. He praises God for keeping promises and asks for God’s blessing upon the Temple. He asks for God’s justice and forgiveness. He requests that God listen to the prayers of foreigners. Then he affirms that he is God’s servant and that the people of Israel are God’s people. Today’s Scripture: 1 Kings 8:52 “Sovereign LORD, may you always look with favor on your people Israel and their king, and hear their prayer whenever they call to you for help.” Today’s Reading 22 Then in the presence of the people Solomon went and stood in front of the altar, where he raised his arms 23 and prayed, “ LORD God of Israel, there is no god like you in heaven above or on earth below! You keep your covenant with your people and show them your love when they live in wholehearted obedience to you. 24 You have kept the promise you made to my father David; today every word has been fulfilled. 25 And now, LORD God of Israel, I pray that you will also keep the other promise you made to my father when you told him that there would always be one of his descendants ruling as king of Israel, provided they obeyed you as carefully as he did. 26 So now, O God of Israel, let everything come true that you promised to my father David, your servant. 27 But can you, O God, really live on earth? Not even all of heaven is large enough to hold you, so how can this Temple that I have built be large enough? 28LORD my God, I am your servant. Listen to my prayer, and grant the requests I make to you today. 29 Watch over this Temple day and night, this place where you have chosen to be worshiped. Hear me when I face this Temple and pray. 30 Hear my prayers and the prayers of your people when they face this place and pray. In your home in heaven hear us and forgive us. 31 When a person is accused of wronging another and is brought to your altar in this Temple to take an oath that he is innocent, 32 O LORD, listen in heaven and judge your servants. Punish the guilty one as he deserves, and acquit the one who is innocent. 33 When your people Israel are defeated by their enemies because they have sinned against you, and then when they turn to you and come to this Temple, humbly praying to you for forgiveness, 34 listen to them in heaven. Forgive the sins of your people and bring them back to the land which you gave to their ancestors. 35 When you hold back the rain because your people have sinned against you, and then when they repent and face this Temple, humbly praying to you, 36 listen to them in heaven. Forgive the sins of the king and of the people of Israel, and teach them to do what is right. Then, O LORD, send rain on this land of yours, which you gave to your people as a permanent possession. 37 When there is famine in the land or an epidemic or the crops are destroyed by scorching winds or swarms of locusts, or when your people are attacked by their enemies, or when there is disease or sickness among them, 38 listen to their prayers. If any of your people Israel, out of heartfelt sorrow, stretch out their hands in prayer toward this Temple, 39 hear their prayer. Listen to them in your home in heaven, forgive them, and help them. You alone know the thoughts of the human heart. Deal with each person as he deserves, 40 so that your people may obey you all the time they live in the land which you gave to our ancestors. 41-42 When a foreigner who lives in a distant land hears of your fame and of the great things you have done for your people and comes to worship you and to pray at this Temple, 43 listen to his prayer. In heaven, where you live, hear him and do what he asks you to do, so that all the peoples of the world may know you and obey you, as your people Israel do. Then they will know that this Temple I have built is the place where you are to be worshiped. 44 When you command your people to go into battle against their enemies and they pray to you, wherever they are, facing this city which you have chosen and this Temple which I have built for you, 45 listen to their prayers. Hear them in heaven and give them victory. 46 When your people sin against you—and there is no one who does not sin—and in your anger you let their enemies defeat them and take them as prisoners to some other land, even if that land is far away, 47 listen to your people's prayers. If there in that land they repent and pray to you, confessing how sinful and wicked they have been, hear their prayers, O LORD. 48 If in that land they truly and sincerely repent and pray to you as they face toward this land which you gave to our ancestors, this city which you have chosen, and this Temple which I have built for you, 49 then listen to their prayers. In your home in heaven hear them and be merciful to them. 50 Forgive all their sins and their rebellion against you, and make their enemies treat them with kindness. 51 They are your own people, whom you brought out of Egypt, that blazing furnace. 52 Sovereign LORD, may you always look with favor on your people Israel and their king, and hear their prayer whenever they call to you for help. 53 You chose them from all the peoples to be your own people, as you told them through your servant Moses when you brought our ancestors out of Egypt. ” Reflect Reread 8:39. Here, Solomon’s understanding is that God looks at people’s motives as well as their actions. This is similar to the message the prophet Jeremiah would later give the people of Israel and Judah about a new agreement, one in which the LORD would write his laws on people’s hearts and minds (Jeremiah 31:31-34). Why do people’s motives matter? Pray Sovereign God, you alone are God and there is no god like you in heaven above or on earth below! You keep your covenant with your people and show them your love. Members phkrause Posted March 18, 2014 Author Members Posted March 18, 2014 March 18, 2014 1 Kings 8:54-66 (Good News Translation) God’s Word: Source of Prayer Introduction 1 Kings 8:54-66: Solomon concludes his prayer and blesses the people. He admonishes the people to be faithful to God and to obey his laws and commands. Today’s reading concludes with a description of Solomon offering sacrifices to the LORD and dedicating the Temple. Today’s Scripture: 1 Kings 8:57, 58a “May the LORD our God be with us as he was with our ancestors; may he never leave us or abandon us; may he make us obedient to him, so that we will always live as he wants us to live.” Today’s Reading 54 After Solomon had finished praying to the LORD, he stood up in front of the altar, where he had been kneeling with uplifted hands. 55 In a loud voice he asked God's blessings on all the people assembled there. He said, 56 “Praise the LORD who has given his people peace, as he promised he would. He has kept all the generous promises he made through his servant Moses. 57 May the LORD our God be with us as he was with our ancestors; may he never leave us or abandon us; 58 may he make us obedient to him, so that we will always live as he wants us to live, keeping all the laws and commands he gave our ancestors. 59 May the LORD our God remember at all times this prayer and these petitions I have made to him. May he always be merciful to the people of Israel and to their king, according to their daily needs. 60 And so all the nations of the world will know that the LORD alone is God—there is no other. 61 May you, his people, always be faithful to the LORD our God, obeying all his laws and commands as you do today. ” 62 Then King Solomon and all the people there offered sacrifices to the LORD. 63 He sacrificed 22,000 head of cattle and 120,000 sheep as fellowship offerings. And so the king and all the people dedicated the Temple. 64 That same day he also consecrated the central part of the courtyard, the area in front of the Temple, and then he offered there the sacrifices burned whole, the grain offerings, and the fat of the animals for the fellowship offerings. He did this because the bronze altar was too small for all these offerings. 65 There at the Temple, Solomon and all the people of Israel celebrated the Festival of Shelters for seven days. There was a huge crowd of people from as far away as Hamath Pass in the north and the Egyptian border in the south. 66 On the eighth day Solomon sent the people home. They all praised him and went home happy because of all the blessings that the LORD had given his servant David and his people Israel. Reflect The completion of the Temple fulfills two important promises that God made to the nation of Israel. The first is the promise to David that his son would follow him as king and be the one to build the Temple (2 Samuel 7). The second is that Israel would have a time of peace after entering the Promised Land (Canaan) and establishing a central place of worship (Deuteronomy 12:5-19). How do you experience God’s promises? Pray Holy God, thank you for the ways in which you keep your promises to your people. Make me ever mindful of your will that I may live and serve you according to your ways. Amen. God is so pleased that Solomon has asked for wisdom that God promises to make him rich and respected as well. Today’s Scripture: 1 Kings 3:9a Give me the wisdom I need to rule your people with justice and to know the difference between good and evil. Today’s Reading 1 Solomon made an alliance with the king of Egypt by marrying his daughter. He brought her to live in David's City until he had finished building his palace, the Temple, and the wall around Jerusalem. 2 A temple had not yet been built for the LORD, and so the people were still offering sacrifices at many different altars. 3 Solomon loved the LORD and followed the instructions of his father David, but he also slaughtered animals and offered them as sacrifices on various altars. 4 On one occasion he went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices because that was where the most famous altar was. He had offered hundreds of burnt offerings there in the past. 5 That night the LORD appeared to him in a dream and asked him, “What would you like me to give you?” 6 Solomon answered, “You always showed great love for my father David, your servant, and he was good, loyal, and honest in his relation with you. And you have continued to show him your great and constant love by giving him a son who today rules in his place. 7 O LORD God, you have let me succeed my father as king, even though I am very young and don't know how to rule. 8 Here I am among the people you have chosen to be your own, a people who are so many that they cannot be counted. 9 So give me the wisdom I need to rule your people with justice and to know the difference between good and evil. Otherwise, how would I ever be able to rule this great people of yours? ” 10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this, 11 and so he said to him, “Because you have asked for the wisdom to rule justly, instead of long life for yourself or riches or the death of your enemies, 12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you more wisdom and understanding than anyone has ever had before or will ever have again. 13 I will also give you what you have not asked for: all your life you will have wealth and honor, more than that of any other king. 14 And if you obey me and keep my laws and commands, as your father David did, I will give you a long life. ” 15 Solomon woke up and realized that God had spoken to him in the dream. Then he went to Jerusalem and stood in front of the LORD's Covenant Box and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the LORD. After that he gave a feast for all his officials. Reflect Reread 3:5-15. What specifically does Solomon ask for? How does God respond? What would you have asked for if you were chosen to be a ruler of a great country? It opens with praise for all the help and blessings God has bestowed on the king and is followed by a description of what will happen to the king’s enemies. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 21:13 We praise you, LORD, for your great strength! We will sing and praise your power. Today’s Reading 1 The king is glad, O LORD, because you gave him strength; he rejoices because you made him victorious. 2 You have given him his heart's desire; you have answered his request. 3 You came to him with great blessings and set a crown of gold on his head. 4 He asked for life, and you gave it, a long and lasting life. 5 His glory is great because of your help; you have given him fame and majesty. 6 Your blessings are with him forever, and your presence fills him with joy. 7 The king trusts in the LORD Almighty; and because of the LORD's constant love he will always be secure. 8 The king will capture all his enemies; he will capture everyone who hates him. 9 He will destroy them like a blazing fire when he appears. The LORD will devour them in his anger, and fire will consume them. 10 None of their descendants will survive; the king will kill them all. 11 They make their plans, and plot against him, but they will not succeed. 12 He will shoot his arrows at them and make them turn and run. 13 We praise you, LORD, for your great strength! We will sing and praise your power. Reflect The people of ancient Israel fought many battles, but they were not to put their trust in military equipment. They were to put their trust in God alone. What verses express the king’s trust in the LORD? In what ways has the king been blessed by the LORD? In what ways has God blessed you? Pray I praise you, Lord God, for your great strength; I will sing and praise your power. Your glory is great, and your presence fills me with joy. Kings were known as the shepherds of their people. Their responsibility was to feed and protect their people. In Psalm 23, God is described as providing food, drink, guidance, and protection. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need. Today’s Reading 1 The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need. 2 He lets me rest in fields of green grass and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water. 3 He gives me new strength. He guides me in the right paths, as he has promised. 4 Even if I go through the deepest darkness, I will not be afraid, LORD, for you are with me. Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me. 5 You prepare a banquet for me, where all my enemies can see me; you welcome me as an honored guest and fill my cup to the brim. 6 I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life; and your house will be my home as long as I live. Reflect Psalm 23 is a much beloved psalm that many have committed to memory. It has been reported that a child who was asked to memorize this psalm said it this way: “The LORD is my shepherd, and that’s all I need to know.” This psalm conveys complete trust in God. It includes a series of petitions along with affirmations of trust in God. The writer attests to the LORD God as our teacher, and to learn, one must have reverence for the LORD. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 25:4 Teach me your ways, O LORD; make them known to me. Today’s Reading 1 To you, O LORD, I offer my prayer; 2 in you, my God, I trust. Save me from the shame of defeat; don't let my enemies gloat over me! 3 Defeat does not come to those who trust in you, but to those who are quick to rebel against you. 4 Teach me your ways, O LORD; make them known to me. 5 Teach me to live according to your truth, for you are my God, who saves me. I always trust in you. 6 Remember, O LORD, your kindness and constant love which you have shown from long ago. 7 Forgive the sins and errors of my youth. In your constant love and goodness, remember me, LORD! 8 Because the LORD is righteous and good, he teaches sinners the path they should follow. 9 He leads the humble in the right way and teaches them his will. 10 With faithfulness and love he leads all who keep his covenant and obey his commands. 11 Keep your promise, LORD, and forgive my sins, for they are many. 12 Those who have reverence for the LORD will learn from him the path they should follow. 13 They will always be prosperous, and their children will possess the land. 14 The LORD is the friend of those who obey him and he affirms his covenant with them. 15 I look to the LORD for help at all times, and he rescues me from danger. 16 Turn to me, LORD, and be merciful to me, because I am lonely and weak. 17 Relieve me of my worries and save me from all my troubles. 18 Consider my distress and suffering and forgive all my sins. 19 See how many enemies I have; see how much they hate me. 20 Protect me and save me; keep me from defeat. I come to you for safety. 21 May my goodness and honesty preserve me, because I trust in you. 22 From all their troubles, O God, save your people Israel! Reflect What does the psalm writer ask of God? What verses indicate the writer’s trust in God? The writer claims to do what is right, seeks to avoid evildoers, and expresses love for God’s house. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 26:2 Examine me and test me, LORD; judge my desires and thoughts. Today’s Reading 1 Declare me innocent, O LORD, because I do what is right and trust you completely. 2 Examine me and test me, LORD; judge my desires and thoughts. 3 Your constant love is my guide; your faithfulness always leads me. 4 I do not keep company with worthless people; I have nothing to do with hypocrites. 5 I hate the company of the evil and avoid the wicked. 6LORD, I wash my hands to show that I am innocent and march in worship around your altar. 7 I sing a hymn of thanksgiving and tell of all your wonderful deeds. 8 I love the house where you live, O LORD, the place where your glory dwells. 9 Do not destroy me with the sinners; spare me from the fate of murderers— 10 those who do evil all the time and are always ready to take bribes. 11 As for me, I do what is right; be merciful to me and save me! 12 I am safe from all dangers; in the assembly of his people I praise the LORD. Trusting in God’s care, the writer expresses a desire to seek God’s guidance and to live in God’s house. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; I will fear no one. The LORD protects me from all danger; I will never be afraid. Today’s Reading 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; I will fear no one. The LORD protects me from all danger; I will never be afraid. 2 When evil people attack me and try to kill me, they stumble and fall. 3 Even if a whole army surrounds me, I will not be afraid; even if enemies attack me, I will still trust God. 4 I have asked the LORD for one thing; one thing only do I want: to live in the LORD's house all my life, to marvel there at his goodness, and to ask for his guidance. 5 In times of trouble he will shelter me; he will keep me safe in his Temple and make me secure on a high rock. 6 So I will triumph over my enemies around me. With shouts of joy I will offer sacrifices in his Temple; I will sing, I will praise the LORD. 7 Hear me, LORD, when I call to you! Be merciful and answer me! 8 When you said, “Come worship me,” I answered, “I will come, LORD.” 9 Don't hide yourself from me! Don't be angry with me; don't turn your servant away. You have been my help; don't leave me, don't abandon me, O God, my savior. 10 My father and mother may abandon me, but the LORD will take care of me. 11 Teach me, LORD, what you want me to do, and lead me along a safe path, because I have many enemies. 12 Don't abandon me to my enemies, who attack me with lies and threats. 13 I know that I will live to see the LORD's goodness in this present life. 14 Trust in the LORD. The psalm focuses on the turning of sadness and sorrow to joy and concludes with a promise to thank God forever. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 30:4 Sing praise to the LORD, all his faithful people! Remember what the Holy One has done, and give him thanks! Today’s Reading 1 I praise you, LORD, because you have saved me and kept my enemies from gloating over me. 2 I cried to you for help, O LORD my God, and you healed me; 3 you kept me from the grave. I was on my way to the depths below, but you restored my life. 4 Sing praise to the LORD, all his faithful people! Remember what the Holy One has done, and give him thanks! 5 His anger lasts only a moment, his goodness for a lifetime. Tears may flow in the night, but joy comes in the morning. 6 I felt secure and said to myself, “I will never be defeated.” 7 You were good to me, LORD; you protected me like a mountain fortress. But then you hid yourself from me, and I was afraid. 8 I called to you, LORD; I begged for your help: 9 “What will you gain from my death? What profit from my going to the grave? Are dead people able to praise you? Can they proclaim your unfailing goodness? 10 Hear me, LORD, and be merciful! Help me, LORD!” 11 You have changed my sadness into a joyful dance; you have taken away my sorrow and surrounded me with joy. 12 So I will not be silent; I will sing praise to you. Members phkrause Posted April 1, 2014 Author Members Posted April 1, 2014 March 31, 2014 Psalm 31 (Good News Translation) God’s Word: Source of Prayer Introduction Psalm 31: Today’s psalm begins with the writer expressing trust in God (verses 1-8), followed by a series of laments (verses 9-13), trust (verse 14), pleas for deliverance (verses 15-18), and concluding with praise (verses 19-24). This psalm is an example of voicing complaints while, at the same time, expressing trust in God. A number of faith traditions include verses 1-5 among the readings at the beginning of Holy Week or the Sunday of the Lord’s Passion. Some translations render verse 5 as “Into your hand I commit my spirit,” words spoken by Jesus from the cross (Luke 23:46). Today’s Scripture: Psalm 31:24 Be strong, be courageous, all you that hope in the LORD. Today’s Reading 1 I come to you, LORD, for protection; never let me be defeated. You are a righteous God; save me, I pray! 2 Hear me! Save me now! Be my refuge to protect me; my defense to save me. 3 You are my refuge and defense; guide me and lead me as you have promised. 4 Keep me safe from the trap that has been set for me; shelter me from danger. 5 I place myself in your care. You will save me, LORD; you are a faithful God. 6 You hate those who worship false gods, but I trust in you. 7 I will be glad and rejoice because of your constant love. You see my suffering; you know my trouble. 8 You have not let my enemies capture me; you have given me freedom to go where I wish. 9 Be merciful to me, LORD, for I am in trouble; my eyes are tired from so much crying; I am completely worn out. 10 I am exhausted by sorrow, and weeping has shortened my life. I am weak from all my troubles; even my bones are wasting away. 11 All my enemies, and especially my neighbors, treat me with contempt. Those who know me are afraid of me; when they see me in the street, they run away. 12 Everyone has forgotten me, as though I were dead; I am like something thrown away. 13 I hear many enemies whispering; terror is all around me. They are making plans against me, plotting to kill me. 14 But my trust is in you, O LORD; you are my God. 15 I am always in your care; save me from my enemies, from those who persecute me. 16 Look on your servant with kindness; save me in your constant love. 17 I call to you, LORD; don't let me be disgraced. May the wicked be disgraced; may they go silently down to the world of the dead. 18 Silence those liars— all the proud and arrogant who speak with contempt about the righteous. 19 How wonderful are the good things you keep for those who honor you! Everyone knows how good you are, how securely you protect those who trust you. 20 You hide them in the safety of your presence from the plots of others; in a safe shelter you hide them from the insults of their enemies. 21 Praise the LORD! How wonderfully he showed his love for me when I was surrounded and attacked! 22 I was afraid and thought that he had driven me out of his presence. But he heard my cry, when I called to him for help. 23 Love the LORD, all his faithful people. The LORD protects the faithful, but punishes the proud as they deserve. 24 Be strong, be courageous, all you that hope in the LORD. Assurance of the LORD’s constant love comes from trusting in and obeying the LORD. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 33:5 The LORD loves what is righteous and just; his constant love fills the earth. Today’s Reading 1 All you that are righteous, shout for joy for what the LORD has done; praise him, all you that obey him. 2 Give thanks to the LORD with harps, sing to him with stringed instruments. 3 Sing a new song to him, play the harp with skill, and shout for joy! 4 The words of the LORD are true, and all his works are dependable. 5 The LORD loves what is righteous and just; his constant love fills the earth. 6 The LORD created the heavens by his command, the sun, moon, and stars by his spoken word. 7 He gathered all the seas into one place; he shut up the ocean depths in storerooms. 8 Worship the LORD, all the earth! Honor him, all peoples of the world! 9 When he spoke, the world was created; at his command everything appeared. 10 The LORD frustrates the purposes of the nations; he keeps them from carrying out their plans. 11 But his plans endure forever; his purposes last eternally. 12 Happy is the nation whose God is the LORD; happy are the people he has chosen for his own! 13 The LORD looks down from heaven and sees all of us humans. 14 From where he rules, he looks down on all who live on earth. 15 He forms all their thoughts and knows everything they do. 16 A king does not win because of his powerful army; a soldier does not triumph because of his strength. 17 War horses are useless for victory; their great strength cannot save. 18 The LORD watches over those who obey him, those who trust in his constant love. 19 He saves them from death; he keeps them alive in times of famine. 20 We put our hope in the LORD; he is our protector and our help. 21 We are glad because of him; we trust in his holy name. 22 May your constant love be with us, LORD, as we put our hope in you. The psalm teaches that the LORD provides for those who honor and obey him and is near to those who are discouraged and have lost hope. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 34:8 Find out for yourself how good the LORD is. Happy are those who find safety with him. Today’s Reading 1 I will always thank the LORD; I will never stop praising him. 2 I will praise him for what he has done; may all who are oppressed listen and be glad! 3 Proclaim with me the LORD's greatness; let us praise his name together! 4 I prayed to the LORD, and he answered me; he freed me from all my fears. 5 The oppressed look to him and are glad; they will never be disappointed. 6 The helpless call to him, and he answers; he saves them from all their troubles. 7 His angel guards those who honor the LORD and rescues them from danger. 8 Find out for yourself how good the LORD is. Happy are those who find safety with him. 9 Honor the LORD, all his people; those who obey him have all they need. 10 Even lions go hungry for lack of food, but those who obey the LORD lack nothing good. 11 Come, my young friends, and listen to me, and I will teach you to honor the LORD. 12 Would you like to enjoy life? Do you want long life and happiness? 13 Then keep from speaking evil and from telling lies. 14 Turn away from evil and do good; strive for peace with all your heart. 15 The LORD watches over the righteous and listens to their cries; 16 but he opposes those who do evil, so that when they die, they are soon forgotten. 17 The righteous call to the LORD, and he listens; he rescues them from all their troubles. 18 The LORD is near to those who are discouraged; he saves those who have lost all hope. 19 Good people suffer many troubles, but the LORD saves them from them all; 20 the LORD preserves them completely; not one of their bones is broken. 21 Evil will kill the wicked; those who hate the righteous will be punished. 22 The LORD will save his people; those who go to him for protection will be spared. While many of the psalms for help demonstrate a movement from despair to praise, this psalm begins by praising God and concludes with a plea for help. Verses 13-17 are parallel to Psalm 70. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 40:11 LORD, I know you will never stop being merciful to me. Your love and loyalty will always keep me safe. Today’s Reading 1 I waited patiently for the LORD's help; then he listened to me and heard my cry. 2 He pulled me out of a dangerous pit, out of the deadly quicksand. He set me safely on a rock and made me secure. 3 He taught me to sing a new song, a song of praise to our God. Many who see this will take warning and will put their trust in the LORD. 4 Happy are those who trust the LORD, who do not turn to idols or join those who worship false gods. 5 You have done many things for us, O LORD our God; there is no one like you! You have made many wonderful plans for us. I could never speak of them all— their number is so great! 6 You do not want sacrifices and offerings; you do not ask for animals burned whole on the altar or for sacrifices to take away sins. Instead, you have given me ears to hear you, 7 and so I answered, “Here I am; your instructions for me are in the book of the Law. 8 How I love to do your will, my God! I keep your teaching in my heart.” 9 In the assembly of all your people, LORD, I told the good news that you save us. You know that I will never stop telling it. 10 I have not kept the news of salvation to myself; I have always spoken of your faithfulness and help. In the assembly of all your people I have not been silent about your loyalty and constant love. 11LORD, I know you will never stop being merciful to me. Your love and loyalty will always keep me safe. 12 I am surrounded by many troubles— too many to count! My sins have caught up with me, and I can no longer see; they are more than the hairs of my head, and I have lost my courage. 13 Save me, LORD! Help me now! 14 May those who try to kill me be completely defeated and confused. May those who are happy because of my troubles be turned back and disgraced. 15 May those who make fun of me be dismayed by their defeat. 16 May all who come to you be glad and joyful. May all who are thankful for your salvation always say, “How great is the LORD!” 17 I am weak and poor, O Lord, but you have not forgotten me. You are my savior and my God— hurry to my aid! The following nine verses are the writer’s personal lament for forgiveness and healing. The psalm concludes with praise to God. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 41:3 The LORD will help them when they are sick and will restore them to health. Today’s Reading 1 Happy are those who are concerned for the poor; the LORD will help them when they are in trouble. 2 The LORD will protect them and preserve their lives; he will make them happy in the land; he will not abandon them to the power of their enemies. 3 The LORD will help them when they are sick and will restore them to health. 4 I said, “I have sinned against you, LORD; be merciful to me and heal me.” 5 My enemies say cruel things about me. They want me to die and be forgotten. 6 Those who come to see me are not sincere; they gather bad news about me and then go out and tell it everywhere. 7 All who hate me whisper to each other about me, they imagine the worst about me. 8 They say, “He is fatally ill; he will never leave his bed again.” 9 Even my best friend, the one I trusted most, the one who shared my food, has turned against me. 10 Be merciful to me, LORD, and restore my health, and I will pay my enemies back. 11 They will not triumph over me, and I will know that you are pleased with me. 12 You will help me, because I do what is right; you will keep me in your presence forever. 13 Praise the LORD, the God of Israel! Praise him now and forever! Amen! Amen! Reflect What is the psalm writer’s prayer (verse 4-12)? What verses express the writer’s trust in God? The collection of 150 psalms in the Bible (referred to as the Psalter) are divided into five books, and Psalm 41 closes Book 1. Each closing psalm in the Psalter concludes with a doxology (an expression of praise) like the last verse in this psalm (verse 13). What will be your doxology today? Pray Lord God, in your mercy, forgive my sins and renew my strength each day. Heal me when I am ill and keep me secure in the shelter of your love and in your presence. I will praise you now and forever. In your holy name I pray. Amen. Prayer Concern Those who are recovering from surgery Tomorrow's Reading Psalm 42: A prayer of someone in exile. Book Two, which concludes with Psalm 72, provides words of hope for a community facing exile. In today’s reading, the writer seeks to overcome the feeling of being alienated from God and expresses trust in God as savior. Today’s Scripture: Psalm 42:8 May the LORD show his constant love during the day, so that I may have a song at night, a prayer to the God of my life. Today’s Reading 1 As a deer longs for a stream of cool water, so I long for you, O God. 2 I thirst for you, the living God. When can I go and worship in your presence? 3 Day and night I cry, and tears are my only food; all the time my enemies ask me, “Where is your God?” 4 My heart breaks when I remember the past, when I went with the crowds to the house of God and led them as they walked along, a happy crowd, singing and shouting praise to God. 5 Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my savior and my God. 6-7 Here in exile my heart is breaking, and so I turn my thoughts to him. He has sent waves of sorrow over my soul; chaos roars at me like a flood, like waterfalls thundering down to the Jordan from Mount Hermon and Mount Mizar. 8 May the LORD show his constant love during the day, so that I may have a song at night, a prayer to the God of my life. 9 To God, my defender, I say, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go on suffering from the cruelty of my enemies?” 10 I am crushed by their insults, as they keep on asking me, “Where is your God?” 11 Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my savior and my God. Reflect How does the psalm writer express a longing for God? What does the writer remember and what causes the writer to be sad? What is the question that the writer’s enemies keep asking? If you were asked this question in the midst of a troubling situation in your life, how would you answer? Pray Lord God, whenever my heart is breaking, I know I can turn to you, trusting that you are always near. You are my defender and the God of my life, and I thank and praise you for your constant love. Amen. God is lauded as the greatest power in the universe. Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 40:31a Those who trust in the LORD for help will find their strength renewed. Today’s Reading 1 “Comfort my people,” says our God. “Comfort them! 2 Encourage the people of Jerusalem. Tell them they have suffered long enough and their sins are now forgiven. I have punished them in full for all their sins. ” 3 A voice cries out, “Prepare in the wilderness a road for the LORD! Clear the way in the desert for our God! 4 Fill every valley; level every mountain. The hills will become a plain, and the rough country will be made smooth. 5 Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it. The LORD himself has promised this. ” 6 A voice cries out, “Proclaim a message!” “What message shall I proclaim?” I ask. “Proclaim that all human beings are like grass; they last no longer than wild flowers. 7 Grass withers and flowers fade when the LORD sends the wind blowing over them. People are no more enduring than grass. 8 Yes, grass withers and flowers fade, but the word of our God endures forever. ” 9 Jerusalem, go up on a high mountain and proclaim the good news! Call out with a loud voice, Zion; announce the good news! Speak out and do not be afraid. Tell the towns of Judah that their God is coming! 10 The Sovereign LORD is coming to rule with power, bringing with him the people he has rescued. 11 He will take care of his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs together and carry them in his arms; he will gently lead their mothers. 12 Can anyone measure the ocean by handfuls or measure the sky with his hands? Can anyone hold the soil of the earth in a cup or weigh the mountains and hills on scales? 13 Can anyone tell the LORD what to do? Who can teach him or give him advice? 14 With whom does God consult in order to know and understand and to learn how things should be done? 15 To the LORD the nations are nothing, no more than a drop of water; the distant islands are as light as dust. 16 All the animals in the forests of Lebanon are not enough for a sacrifice to our God, and its trees are too few to kindle the fire. 17 The nations are nothing at all to him. 18 To whom can God be compared? How can you describe what he is like? 19 He is not like an idol that workers make, that metalworkers cover with gold and set in a base of silver. 20 Anyone who cannot afford silver or gold chooses wood that will not rot. He finds a skillful worker to make an image that won't fall down. 21 Do you not know? Were you not told long ago? Have you not heard how the world began? 22 It was made by the one who sits on his throne above the earth and beyond the sky; the people below look as tiny as ants. He stretched out the sky like a curtain, like a tent in which to live. 23 He brings down powerful rulers and reduces them to nothing. 24 They are like young plants, just set out and barely rooted. When the LORD sends a wind, they dry up and blow away like straw. 25 To whom can the holy God be compared? Is there anyone else like him? 26 Look up at the sky! Who created the stars you see? The one who leads them out like an army, he knows how many there are and calls each one by name! His power is so great— not one of them is ever missing! 27 Israel, why then do you complain that the LORD doesn't know your troubles or care if you suffer injustice? 28 Don't you know? Haven't you heard? The LORD is the everlasting God; he created all the world. He never grows tired or weary. No one understands his thoughts. 29 He strengthens those who are weak and tired. 30 Even those who are young grow weak; young people can fall exhausted. 31 But those who trust in the LORD for help will find their strength renewed. They will rise on wings like eagles; they will run and not get weary; they will walk and not grow weak. Reflect What words of hope and encouragement does Isaiah proclaim? Today’s reading is filled with images from the natural world that describe the nature of God and the nature of people. What are some of the images used to describe God? What are some of the images used to describe people? Which images are most striking to you? Pray Lord, you give strength to the weary. As I trust in you, may I find new strength and become strong like a soaring eagle, walking and running without getting tired. Thank you for your eternal love and care. Amen. Even though Jerusalem lies in ruins, it will be restored and the people will rejoice. God will bless and protect those who return from exile. Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 49:13 Sing heavens! Shout for joy, earth! Let the mountains burst into song! The LORD will comfort his people; he will have pity on his suffering people. Today’s Reading 1 Listen to me, distant nations, you people who live far away! Before I was born, the LORD chose me and appointed me to be his servant. 2 He made my words as sharp as a sword. With his own hand he protected me. He made me like an arrow, sharp and ready for use. 3 He said to me, “Israel, you are my servant; because of you, people will praise me. ” 4 I said, “I have worked, but how hopeless it is! I have used up my strength, but have accomplished nothing. ” Yet I can trust the LORD to defend my cause; he will reward me for what I do. 5 Before I was born, the LORD appointed me; he made me his servant to bring back his people, to bring back the scattered people of Israel. The LORD gives me honor; he is the source of my strength. 6 The LORD said to me, “I have a greater task for you, my servant. Not only will you restore to greatness the people of Israel who have survived, but I will also make you a light to the nations— so that all the world may be saved.” 7 Israel's holy God and savior says to the one who is deeply despised, who is hated by the nations and is the servant of rulers: “Kings will see you released and will rise to show their respect; princes also will see it, and they will bow low to honor you.” This will happen because the LORD has chosen his servant; the holy God of Israel keeps his promises. 8 The LORD says to his people, “When the time comes to save you, I will show you favor and answer your cries for help. I will guard and protect you and through you make a covenant with all peoples. I will let you settle once again in your land that is now laid waste. 9 I will say to the prisoners, “Go free!” and to those who are in darkness, “Come out to the light!” They will be like sheep that graze on the hills; 10 they will never be hungry or thirsty. Sun and desert heat will not hurt them, for they will be led by one who loves them. He will lead them to springs of water. 11 I will make a highway across the mountains and prepare a road for my people to travel. 12 My people will come from far away, from the north and the west, and from Aswan in the south.” 13 Sing, heavens! Shout for joy, earth! Let the mountains burst into song! The LORD will comfort his people; he will have pity on his suffering people. 14 But the people of Jerusalem said, “The LORD has abandoned us! He has forgotten us.” 15 So the LORD answers, “Can a woman forget her own baby and not love the child she bore? Even if a mother should forget her child, I will never forget you. 16 Jerusalem, I can never forget you! I have written your name on the palms of my hands. 17 Those who will rebuild you are coming soon, and those who destroyed you will leave. 18 Look around and see what is happening! Your people are assembling—they are coming home! As surely as I am the living God, you will be proud of your people, as proud as a bride is of her jewels. 19 Your country was ruined and desolate— but now it will be too small for those who are coming to live there. And those who left you in ruins will be far removed from you. 20 Your people who were born in exile will one day say to you, ‘This land is too small— we need more room to live in!’ 21 Then you will say to yourself, ‘Who bore all these children for me? I lost my children and could have no more. I was exiled and driven away— who brought these children up? I was left all alone— where did these children come from?’” 22 The Sovereign LORD says to his people: “I will signal to the nations, and they will bring your children home. 23 Kings will be like fathers to you; queens will be like mothers. They will bow low before you and honor you; they will humbly show their respect for you. Then you will know that I am the LORD; no one who waits for my help will be disappointed.” 24 Can you take away a soldier's loot? Can you rescue the prisoners of a tyrant? 25 The LORD replies, “That is just what is going to happen. The soldier's prisoners will be taken away, and the tyrant's loot will be seized. I will fight against whoever fights you, and I will rescue your children. 26 I will make your oppressors kill each other; they will be drunk with murder and rage. Then all people will know that I am the LORD, the one who saves you and sets you free. They will know that I am Israel's powerful God.” Reflect Reread verses 14-16. While in exile, many Israelites probably felt as if the Lord had forgotten about them. How might Isaiah’s words have encouraged them? Have you ever felt as though God had forgotten you? Where did you find encouragement during that time? Pray Loving God, there are times when I feel so distant from you. Reveal your presence to me, that I may always be mindful of your saving love. Heighten my awareness of you today. Amen. Prayer Concern Those who feel distant from God Tomorrow's Reading Isaiah 51:1-23: The prophet offers words of comfort to Jerusalem.
