Members phkrause Posted January 30, 2011 Members Posted January 30, 2011 Personally Bravus I see nothing wrong with that quote from EGW! It doesn't make me feel quilty one iota. I can remember many years ago when first reading her books, I had a very hard time with them. But the closer I've come to Jesus her writings don't bother me at all. I still have a problem reading reading her but she doesn't intimidate me. I actually enjoy reading her very hard to read books. Except the GC that book is very easy to read for me. Anyway that's my thoughts. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
doug yowell Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 I've tried to be as clear as I can, but I'll give it another go. My objection to the quote has two parts: 1. It motivates through guilt and fear rather than through love. It does not say 'Jesus is lovely and amazing, and has great things in store for us in this life and the next, and we're missing out when we don't choose those things'. Instead it is an ominous, doomy warning, essentially motivating with threats of damnation rather than promises of salvation. Perhaps if read in the context of the entire massive body of EGW's work there is more balance available, but this excised chunk is pretty unremittingly grim. Perhaps this is where your objections play upon each other. If you object to motivating thru guilt you would need to eliminate much of the Bible. Love often means having to warn someone of an impending danger(Prov.27:6) even if it takes employing guilt and fear(nothing wrong with a little guilt and a good dose of reality once in a while).Saying all the wonderful things about Christ (He deserves even more)has it's place but sometimes the consequences of failure to grasp these promises have their place too. Surely you agree with that? Since it is the Holy Spirit's job to do these things (John16:8) and Paul himself spoke of the same (Acts 24:24,25)maybe your initial reaction was tainted by fact that you weren't fully concentrating on the quote itself? Moderators John317 Posted January 30, 2011 Moderators Posted January 30, 2011 Good post, Doug. The Bible shows that God uses both warnings and "guilt" as well as love. He meets us where we are-- and sometimes that means warning people and waking them up to the truth of their dangerous situation. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

I got an earful from my wife yesterday because I preached on Christ's criticism of the 5/7 churches in Rev 2-3, especially that of Laodicea, although I thought I took great pains to be encouraging with the still open invitation to repent. She is one of those that easily devastated by criticism and do not respond well to it. I believe humans respond to different modes of motivation. Some respond best to softly spoken criticism, some by coddling, but some through fear or even pain. After being burned once, I doubt that a child will intentionally put a hand on a hot stove ever again. But whatever motivator God uses, behind it all I'm sure, is love. Quote
