(Morning Talk at Ottawa, Kansas, May 14, 1889.) The question has been asked me, "Do you think that the Lord has any more light for us as a people?" I answer that He has light that is new to us, and yet it is precious old light that is to shine forth from the Word of truth [the Bible]. We have only the glimmerings of the rays of the light that is yet to come to us. [1SM 401] We have many lessons to learn, and many, many to unlearn. God and heaven alone are infallible. Those who think that they will never have to give up a cherished view, never have occasion to change an opinion, will be disappointed. [CW 37] “A spirit of pharisaism has been coming in upon the people who claim to believe the truth for these last days. They are self-satisfied. They have said, ‘We have the truth. There is no more light for the people of God.’ But we are not safe when we take a position that we will not accept anything else than that upon which we have settled as truth. We should take the Bible, and investigate it closely for ourselves. We should dig in the mine of God's word for truth. ‘Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.’ Some have asked me if I thought there was any more light for the people of God. Our minds have become so narrow that we do not seem to understand that the Lord has a mighty work to do for us. Increasing light is to shine upon us; for ‘the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.’ --Review and Herald, June 18, 1889. CW 34, 35 Thanks Sonny. Excellent quotes from the missing archives. Truly these have been buried far too long.Glad you dug them up. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Did you get that? The church, even EGW during her time, progressed in understanding - Scriptural understanding, that is. Take, for example, her understanding of God's love in 1860: “The Lord loves those little children who try to do right, and he has promised that they shall be in his kingdom. But wicked children God does not love. He will not take them to the beautiful City, for he only admits the good, obedient, and patient children there…. When you feel tempted to speak impatient and fretful, remember the Lord sees you, and will not love you if you do wrong. “ [AY 63, 1860] Years later, specifically in 1892 (some 32 years later) she progressed in her understanding: “Do not teach your children that God does not love them when they do wrong (that's a complete reversal)….Do not terrify your children by telling them of the wrath of God, but rather seek to impress them with his unspeakable love and goodness….” [bible Echo and Signs of the Times, 02-01-1892] Now, personally I think you need to catch up with how Ellen viewed things in 1892. We are not to use scare tactics to win unbelievers over to God (as you currently do). No, we are to "impress them with his unspeakable love and goodness" of God. Sonny Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Your life, and your family's life is at stake. There's no place to hide..... Matt 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 "Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven. 34 "Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to 'set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law'; 36 and 'a man's enemies will be those of his own household.' 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. Quote
ClubV12 Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 The life at stake, of which I speak, is the second death, not our life on this planet. Lot's wife lost her life, but more importantly she likely lost her eternal life. Each person see's the bible differently as well as the Spirit of Prophecy, and some good God fearing souls interpret both incorrectly. We need the Holy Spirit to guide us and He works through "us", his prophets, evangelists, pastors and others to clarify the message and interpret it correctly. IF we seek to diligently understand. William Miller, for instance, calculated correctly the end date of the 2,300 year prophecy, but did not reach the correct conclusion as to the meaning thereof. Little by little the truth was revealed, through Ellen White in this case, but it was done BY the workings of the trinity. I don't think we can expect to find "new light" unless we are diligently seeking that light which has previously been revealed. Anything "new" must be in harmony and consitent with that which has been revealed already. Get out of the cities. Any new light on that? I don't think so, it stands as truth then, today and tommorow. Moderators Gerr Posted March 19, 2011 Moderators Posted March 19, 2011 I was watching one of those a few weeks back. A smiling, bearded man was promising that any one who would send $1000 would get it back many times over. Very persuasive too! Quote
LifeHiscost Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 That isn't what being a Christian is about. Being a Christian is about helping other people. Then OTOH, why is it counseled: "“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened."Matthew 7:7,8 NLT While it is true that one can ask for that which is not spiritually healthy, the desire to acquire can be for honorable purposes. "“And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full." John 16:23-25 NKJV "You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures(lusts)." James 4:3 NKJV, KJV "...who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life.”"Luke 18:30 NKJV "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God." 1 Corinthians 2:12 NKJV One can only give largely when one has received largely. If one wishes to be meager in their giving, one can always ask for little. God blesses! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
LifeHiscost Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Lately I've been wondering what parts of Ellen Whites writings would be considered for inclusion in the cannon, the bible, should time continue. That is how highly I rank her writings! When one reaches that conclusion, it can lead to some very destructive conclusions, not only in their own lives, but perhaps even more destructive in the influence on the lives of others. "lesser light leading to the greater light" EGW Writings. Couldn't access the source because the browser was too busy. God blesses! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
Woody Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 A recent report indicates that at it's peak the waves were 77 feet tall. Now that is tall. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
ClubV12 Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 While wondering what of EGW's writings might ne included in the bible if time should go forward... "When one reaches that conclusion, it can lead to some very destructive conclusions,,," There is nothing destructive about recognizing EGW was a prophet, in a long line of prophets down through the ages. Not everything Paul, and all the biblical authors wrote, is included in the bible. I wonder what parts were left out? Pauls letters were also "lesser light" leading to greater light, as were all the prophets works. They all harmonized with, clairified and expounded on existing light, existing bible records. God used EGW to unlock Daniels 2,300 day prophecy, without those revelations through her, we still wouldn't know the meaning of 1844. The sanctuary truth and understanding is so significant, it should be a part of the biblical record. It is the very foundation of SDA belief. Quote
Woody Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 God didn't want all the words of all the prophets to be included in the Bible. And neither does he want all of our current prophet words to be held up as from HIM. Two million words from one prophet is excessive in my mind. It dwarfs the Bible. And that just ain't right. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
ClubV12 Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Point well taken Woody!! EGW writings are vast. Which is why I was wondering, first, what else did the bible authors write that didn't make it into the cannon record? Secondly, if only a tiny fraction of what EGW wrote would be considered, what part(s) would that be? I think the Sanctuary message, the understanding of 1844, would be the most likely candidate. The meaning was never arrived at by mankind solely studying the bible and the bible alone. It took a direct revelation from God for man to understand. Visions and such... Which then begs the question, what other parts of the bible, if any, remain that are impossible to understand without a direct revelation from God? New light, that is understanding, may well be forth coming yet! Quote
Woody Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Good Questions. I don't think this is the right place to discuss it though. So, I will start a new thread entitled "Is 2 million 2 much". Members phkrause Posted March 24, 2011 Members Posted March 24, 2011 A recent report indicates that at it's peak the waves were 77 feet tall. Now that is tall. Almost as tall as in the movie "A Perfect Storm" based on a true story. If I'm not mistaken they were about 100' waves. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
ClubV12 Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 And NOT the record for Japan! WOW! I saw something about a 125 foot wave in the 1800's being the record. Quote
Woody Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 And NOT the record for Japan! WOW! I saw something about a 125 foot wave in the 1800's being the record. Wow. I had not heard this. But on the news I keep seeing pics of cars and huge houses being moved out to the ocean with just shallow water. I can't imagine what a 125 foot wave would do.
