Stan Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 If we could move away from using Vegetarian Swear Words, including things like B****** I would appreciate it. In some areas of the world it is normal, but to others it offends. I am sure other adjectives or adverbs could be used to create feelings and passions. Fair?? NormF Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 Dear JimBob, There are many words that have different denotations and connotations since the days of the King James Bible in 1611. The language has changed radically in the last 400 years, and not just with "thee" and "thou." For all practical purposes, just because you can find, or not find, a particular word in the KJB is utterly irrelevant to establishing whether its usage is apropos in polite company today. That doesn't mean the KJB is irrelevant; it means its usage of language in terms of social context was appropriate to its time, not ours. You complain about irrelevant sermons, the misuse of the pulpit and Scripture, and then pull a stunt like this .... That post was the most blatant, egregious misuse of Scripture I've seen in a very long time. I can't speak for others, but I will call a spade a spade ... that was a spade, and your credibility just took a nosedive with me because of it. Stan is making a good faith effort to gently encourage a more polite level of discourse (Christian, if you will), and the very first response he gets was your foul faux pas. How sad. If he had thought some would not understand what he was referring to, wouldn't he have spelled it out himself? He's not dumb. How's your foot? I'm afraid you will be finding it rather difficult walking with that hole you've just blasted through it. Regards, Norm Quote Debile fundamentum, fallit opus. - "Where there is a weak foundation, the work falls."

jasd Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 I’ve pretty much kept up with the posts on these several boards --so, I can appreciate that B****** is a reference to my _[inflected]_ basta.. One who may have read my posts know that I occasionally utilize other national idioms, as have others. [inflected] was the ameliorative, the heads-up. The inflected basta means, coarse, detestable, undesirable. Two things following…with me taking this opportunity to circumscribe inclusively: / what is more offensive? An inflected basta, an inferred Biblical b******? (irrespective of homiletic compositions): Or incessant disparagement? the utilization of pedantry-as-icepick… / what is the rationale for underlying consent which tolerates one initiating the uninflected and seemingly compulsive behaviour of mean-mouthitis? I see you NormF Quote: The language has changed radically in the last 400 years, and not just with "thee" and "thou." Unless, we niggle over the quality of blue, you will recall, won't you? that you are not unaccountable in the level of 'noise' this past few weeks on these boards. And, Stan, your efforts to gently remind us to "clean up our act" most appreciated! Quote: Stan is making a good faith effort to gently encourage a more polite level of discourse (Christian, if you will), Regards, Norm If I might add a thought, off-color or swear words and "Vegetarian" swear words not only don't work here, often they cause one to loose a lot of respect in the business and professional world. They work for Hollywood! In the real world, if one has a good command of the laungage, than one can make any point known without using swear or "Vegetarian" swear words. Personally, if that is the only one can communicate, than I would as soon hear the "real" word as the watered-down version; the meaning is the same. Moderators Bravus Posted March 27, 2005 Moderators Posted March 27, 2005 I'm with Naomi: show off your (clean) vocabulary and grammatical skills to make points - even strong ones - without resorting to swear words or their near kin (a simple basic definition is, if the meaning of the word has nothing semantically to do with the content of the rest of the sentence, it's probably a swear word or a stand-in). I know I've gone back and edited myself fairly recently for using one of these words - a pretty innocuous one, but I decided it wasn't appropriate. I can also see jasd's point that it's possible to be very hurtful and unpleasant with 'clean' words too, and I hope we'll work on that issue as well, but saying that doesn't remove the need to address swearing and its cousins. There is the point about Stan's effort The misuse of scripture My thrust related to sermons Your point about KJV My credibility Your emotional reaction.. For now...I will tell you that I thought of that scripture...because after counting the astericks after the letter B...I remembered reading that text in my sabbath school class during a lesson study about 30 years ago... The verse was related to the lesson and at that time I had the KJV for my personal bible...I remember the change in facial features in some of the class when I read that..verse. I would think that the verse was kept in memory rather than turn into vapor ware because of the word. I did not throw out that verse as a sign of insubordination or disrespect to Stan... if you check out my personal profile...you will see "I manage" I know what it is like to attempt to maintain order/harmony with people of various personalities/character/ maturity levels/races/cultures... I got paid for it since 1970.. I will admit I am one of the looser canons around but I do note the input of Stan and Bravus. As far as credibility....separate the the message from the messenger and keep an ear for the ring of truth... this point reminds me of this passage.. ----------------------------------- MARK 5 "2": And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, "3": Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: "4": Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. "5": And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. "6": But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, "7": And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. "8": For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. "9": And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. Notice that Jesus is called the Son of the most high God by an unclean spirit.. Yet the religious rulers wouldn't accept that.. Quote

NormF Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 Dear JimBob, Let me share a true story. Back when I was in college, my best friend from back in high school days told me about something that had happened the previous year while I was away at college. I've shared it a time or two since - my wife knows about it, and a couple friends have heard it. But this looks like a good place to set it out in public. My friend's dad was a small-time contractor who built houses. He'd hired a carpenter to help the two of them with the framing of the latest house he was building. Together with one other hired hand there were four guys on the crew. Carpenter #4, the new guy, was a Mennonite. That fact came out, not because he was preaching at them, but because his language was noticably cleaner than the rest ... and the fact that he didn't participate in the off-color jokes the rest of them thrived on, and they'd quizzed him about it. One day as cruel fate would have it, new guy took a mighty swing at a recalcitrant nail, and it escaped with nary a mark ... essentially, he flattened his poor thumb instead. There was about a one-second delay while he simultaneously ascertained that the thumb was still with him, and that, throbbing and spurting blood like a stuck pig, it hurt, mightily! He grabbed his mangled thumb, jumped up and down, and began bellowing out in pain, "Bad words! BAD WORDS! BAD WORDS!!! B-A-A-A-D WORDS!!! Literally, those were the very words! The other guys looked at him in disbelief. How could anybody clobber a thumb like that, and then do nothing worse than jump up and down holding his bleeding thumb, and say only, "Bad words"? They didn't know whether to laugh or pity him. Laughter won out, and they roared in mirth. They took him to the hospital E-room; he really had done a number to it. He didn't break it, though it took a lot of stitches; and later on, he did end up losing the thumbnail. Next day though, he was back at the job. The swings of his hammer were a bit more subdued, but he kept up his end of the work just the same. Then several days later, lightning struck twice - my friend's dad, the boss, did pretty nearly the same thing. And for the first time in his life, all that came out of his mouth was, "Bad words!" The rest of the guys broke out in gails of laughter again ... mixed in with a fair amount of shock and disbelief! The big, burly, cigar-chomping boss, who never said two words without packing them in three cuss words, was suddenly limiting himself to "Bad Words." Somehow though, for the rest of the summer, it just wasn't the same on the job site. The off-color jokes subsided, and "Bad Words" became simultaneously the joke of the day and the expression of choice. To this day, my friend looks back at that summer still amazed, even at himself. Up until then, the pride of both him and his dad had been their multi-volume vocabulary of unvarnished oaths. And no, despite the change, they never did even darken the doorway of a Mennonite church. Yet, after that summer, neither my friend nor his dad ever regained the "fluency" they'd had either. Neil D Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 I can say that I am not above swearing if I feel it is a necessary item. But there are times when it is just as important NOT to swear.... I was building a house, about 7 years ago. We were required to nail a joist to the frame thru the metal plate that held the joist together. And you had to really give the nail a whack just to get it started. Well, one day I missed....And guess who is next to me and I fully aware of her watching me.....My youngest daughter...Now, she is my 'deep thinker' of the family and the most religious....but she told me she was sure that she was in for the blueing of the air around me....and strangely enough, the air remained clear...I learned 2 things that day....1] swearing is not an auto reaction, although it can be...2] setting an example can be a painful experience sometimes... As far as I know, that daughter does not swear at all....although her sister does, but only when very stressed about inportant conflicting situations....
