Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted March 28, 2005 Moderators Posted March 28, 2005 "clean vocabulary and grammatical skills..." I agree. I've often sat back in awe as someone with a great command of the English language is able to meet some crisis with powerful words, totally appropriate to the situation, delivered on the spur of the moment. That, I admire. It must take a lot of pre-planning to come up with those great adjectives. But the really great people accomplish it. It can take a rhyme, it will take time to think your thoughts out. But you won't have to SHOUT to get your point across. 'Cus we know our thoughts center on a cross. Moderators Kevin H Posted June 16, 2013 Moderators Posted June 16, 2013 Dear JimBob, Let me share a true story. Back when I was in college, my best friend from back in high school days told me about something that had happened the previous year while I was away at college. I've shared it a time or two since - my wife knows about it, and a couple friends have heard it. But this looks like a good place to set it out in public. My friend's dad was a small-time contractor who built houses. He'd hired a carpenter to help the two of them with the framing of the latest house he was building. Together with one other hired hand there were four guys on the crew. Carpenter #4, the new guy, was a Mennonite. That fact came out, not because he was preaching at them, but because his language was noticably cleaner than the rest ... and the fact that he didn't participate in the off-color jokes the rest of them thrived on, and they'd quizzed him about it. One day as cruel fate would have it, new guy took a mighty swing at a recalcitrant nail, and it escaped with nary a mark ... essentially, he flattened his poor thumb instead. There was about a one-second delay while he simultaneously ascertained that the thumb was still with him, and that, throbbing and spurting blood like a stuck pig, it hurt, mightily! He grabbed his mangled thumb, jumped up and down, and began bellowing out in pain, "Bad words! BAD WORDS! BAD WORDS!!! B-A-A-A-D WORDS!!! Literally, those were the very words! The other guys looked at him in disbelief. How could anybody clobber a thumb like that, and then do nothing worse than jump up and down holding his bleeding thumb, and say only, "Bad words"? They didn't know whether to laugh or pity him. Laughter won out, and they roared in mirth. They took him to the hospital E-room; he really had done a number to it. He didn't break it, though it took a lot of stitches; and later on, he did end up losing the thumbnail. Next day though, he was back at the job. The swings of his hammer were a bit more subdued, but he kept up his end of the work just the same. Then several days later, lightning struck twice - my friend's dad, the boss, did pretty nearly the same thing. And for the first time in his life, all that came out of his mouth was, "Bad words!" The rest of the guys broke out in gails of laughter again ... mixed in with a fair amount of shock and disbelief! The big, burly, cigar-chomping boss, who never said two words without packing them in three cuss words, was suddenly limiting himself to "Bad Words." Somehow though, for the rest of the summer, it just wasn't the same on the job site. The off-color jokes subsided, and "Bad Words" became simultaneously the joke of the day and the expression of choice. To this day, my friend looks back at that summer still amazed, even at himself. Up until then, the pride of both him and his dad had been their multi-volume vocabulary of unvarnished oaths. And no, despite the change, they never did even darken the doorway of a Mennonite church. Yet, after that summer, neither my friend nor his dad ever regained the "fluency" they'd had either. Regards, Norm Love it!!! Now how about Uff Da? Quote

olger Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 Having taken a vow to forgo the use of strong language nearly 30 years ago, fora short while I felt somewhat limited in my ability to express myself. I have since come up with alternative ways to express myself. Crab Apples! Goosecaps! Gogglers! Jellyfish! One day, some twenty-five years ago I was particularly aroused at a situation and expleted the following: "The no-good double-dipped ding-blasted triple-twisted sons of Satan !!!" More recently I experienced a penchant for P-words and created the following: Friday, February 04, 2011 7:00 PM - 7:15 PM - "AT&T is bunch of no good penny-ante pasty-complexion pin-headed panty-waist pencil pushers!" Perfect. Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.."

Administrators debbym Posted June 17, 2013 Administrators Posted June 17, 2013 http://www.renfaire.com/Language/insults.html and yes expressions of passion using what my children great grandmother called "by" words was acceptable by this sweet deeply Methodist Woman. Using words like shoot and darn, and heck, and other euphemisms, was Christianized cussing. I have friends who will not use these words, because they also hear the words they stood for. we can be emphatic without resorting to base expression. nothing wrong with speaking firmly and earnestly. We swear to tell the truth the whole truth laying our hand on a bible, this is taking oath. there are moment when emphasis is appropriate. for example "Face the music young lady!!" The words, "Lord willing" as an appropriate way to express humility when making plans, because all plans were to be held in submission to the higher One who was really in charge of every providence. oh dear, and me oh my, and uh oh, and what in the world?! Good Grief! oh NO! these expressions are all different different then %#@*>. Quote deb Love awakens love. Let God be true and every man a liar.
