ClubV12 Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 I'm excited about this and can't wait to discuss it with the Pastor and hopefully get the church organized to take part in this excellent project! Reading Great Controversy was a major step in changing my life. Quote
Moderators John317 Posted August 21, 2011 Moderators Posted August 21, 2011 It's the 1911 edition. The site says: Ellen White published her initial 219-page edition in 1858, which she expanded in 1884 to 492 pages. After traveling to many of the countries of the Protestant Reformation in the mid-1880s, she wished to include further lessons from that historical period as well as from events in her own day, and a volume of more than 650 pages was issued in 1888. A few years before her death in 1915, she made further updates, which are represented in the current edition known as The Great Hope. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators John317 Posted August 21, 2011 Moderators Posted August 21, 2011 Reading Great Controversy was a major step in changing my life. Yes, it was in mine too. I found it in a book store in San Diego by chance and remember standing there in the store reading it while the nearby TV showed the POWs landing at San Diego. Not long after that I got an invitation in the mail to an SDA evangelistic series. Doug Batchelor said also that reading the GC was a turning point for him. He said that someone left a copy of GC in a cave where he stayed for a long time reading and studying the Bible. It's been such an important book in so many people's lives. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Lysimachus Posted August 21, 2011 Author Posted August 21, 2011 I'll be honest and say that this question in their FAQ kind of bothered me: Quote: Do you believe that the pope is the antichrist? No. The Adventist Church does not teach that any specific person on earth is the antichrist. We believe that the antichrist is Satan who opposed Christ and rebelled in Heaven. Prophecy does speak of a political-religious system (rather than a particular individual) which will embody the spirit and purpose of the antichrist in the last days. We also believe that any person or system that seeks to take Christ’s rightful place or oppress His followers at any time acts in the spirit of the antichrist. If you ask me, that statements comes across a bit on the wishy washy side. It's not straightforward. It's like it's trying to hide that the Papacy IS the system of Antichrist. We shouldn't be afraid of denouncing the Papal System. The reformers would never mirror such sentiments as above! To be quite frank, I think they'd be far better off at not including this question at all! All they do is arouse suspicion, and run the risk of being accused of dishonesty. People were willing to read ALL that garbage! It was the Left Behind Movie that got them reading them, no matter how thick they were. Moderators John317 Posted August 22, 2011 Moderators Posted August 22, 2011 YES WE DO, but first it will have to be written as a book, better than the "Left Behind" series, which are popular and sensational yet biblically inaccurate. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. But, Part 3... Quote: Part 3 of The Great Controversy is currently in production and the exciting news is that it will be released as a MOVIE not a documentary! The Movie "The Great Controversy - The Closing Scenes" will cover chapters 36 through 40 of the same book. ... I hadn't seen them before. Thanks. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Lysimachus Posted August 22, 2011 Author Posted August 22, 2011 Sounds wonderful. I really look forward to seeing it. I like the links you posted. I hadn't seen them before. Thanks. You're welcome. I found it on this page here: http://greatcontroversyproject.adventist.org/resources/ I noticed the "second" video on that page, was Part 1 of those 3 videos. Then I found the other 2 on the links below that video. But I had to manually do a search to find them on youtube, because the links to the videos, like here: http://www.thegreatcontroversyproject.com/part-1.html ... do not let you click on it to link to youtube, and you can't expand it. So had to find it directly on youtube. Quote ~Lysimachus (Marcos S.) ClubV12 Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 The movie sounds like a great idea! I'm all for using new technology to reach the people where ever we can. During Sister Whites days in Australia there were several instances of church members being arrested for working on Sunday. Thus the attention of that Nation was focused on Adventists. Of course that will happen again, all over the world, but other events will also happen to bring Adventists to the attention of the Nation, the world. WHAT these things begin to happen is WHEN those Great Controveries sitting unread on the book shelf will be searched out! In time, we will not be able to produce or circulate any books, those books that are in circulation, sitting of the shelf, will be like gold. Sounds like a good investment, I'm in! Quote
Moderators John317 Posted August 22, 2011 Moderators Posted August 22, 2011 Story of Redemption, Christ's Object Lessons, Steps to Christ, Desire of Ages - all good choices. I agree with you. I would add Patriarchs and Prophets, and Ministry of Healing. Have you seen Steps To Jesus? Of all her books, Ellen White said she had the greatest burden to see GC have the widest possible distribution. She believed that was her most important book for the world. I think it would be best if certain chapters of all these books could be printed separately. So many people won't read a big book. Once they read and like a few chapters of a book, they just might want to get the whole thing. They've already done this with parts of DA. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators John317 Posted August 22, 2011 Moderators Posted August 22, 2011 During Sister Whites days in Australia there were several instances of church members being arrested for working on Sunday. I wasn't aware of the SDAs arrested in Australia. Thanks for that information. During the late 1880s in the US, mainly in the South, a number of SDAs were arrested for the same reason. They were farmers and were arrested for working on their farms on "the Lord's day." There's at least one book about it and shows photographs of the SDA men on chain-gangs. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
ClubV12 Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 John, with a chuckle, I JUST came across that researching "stock". This Aussie Adventist was sentenced to two hours in the "stocks" for working on Sunday. I really like these new EGW computer based referrence tools, IF you have a fast computer. It's a pain to use on a slow one, I found out when I loaded it on a friends older machine. Virtually worthless it was SO slow. Quote
Moderators John317 Posted August 22, 2011 Moderators Posted August 22, 2011 Do you mean the Comprehensive EGW Research CD-ROM? If you have it, that is a great one, isn't it? Yes, I suspect it could be really slow on "dial-up" or a slow computer. Thanks to Overaged and Stan, though, I have a very fast computer. Without them, I wouldn't even be on the Forum nowadays. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
