Thanks for posting this, Lysimachus. Now we know better about their reason for leaving out the Introduction. I hope they eventually find a way to include it. It's still a wonderful edition, though. I plan to get a copy today for my daughter, who just recently started reading The Great Controvery .

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Update.

Dear Marcos

After I received your comments I went straight to the person who did the layout and found all the pictures. We discussed at length how to get the introduction into the book and we found a way. Thanks to your prayers.

So the next version will be with the introduction and you were the person to push us.

Thank you for your help.

God bless.

Does this correspond to the work published by James Arrabito & David Mould? (Laymen for Religious Liberty) Does it contain all of Arrabito's original photos & artwork?

Is there a full index & Scripture index?

Thanks.

Hi Gordon,

Unfortunately, no, it does not contain any of Arrabito's work. This is published in Denmark, by completely new people I had never heard of before. My friend Andrew says they were selling a bunch of them at ASI in Sacramento last August.

Arrabito's "The (New, Illustrated) Great Controversy" is now out of print. Mould told me that they are trying to get it back into print, but it has been difficult. You can now only buy it from Amazon. I bought 2 copies quick just a week ago and received them a couple days ago.

Both Arrabito's and this new Illustrated Great Controversy by WWLE are both great in their own respects. I wouldn't put one above the other. They are both great to share with different types of people. There are a lot more illustrations in the one by WWLE though, and the binding is higher quality with higher quality paper as well and book cover as well.

Thanks Marcos.

Arrabito & Mould were definitely on the fringe when spearheading this work at the 1990 General Conference in Indianapolis. They rented space across from the HoosierDome and were promoting the book project with an outstanding display of Arrabito's Great Controversy photos, many poster size. It was a fascinating gallery of Protestant history.

As I recall, thy were raising funds to publish a four or six page Ellen White spread in the Indiana edition of Time magazine - think I have a copy. This was to spur Adventists to underwrite a large run of The (New, Illustrated) Great Controversy.

From memory this was the Holiday Inn, which housed a number of less mainstream displays - Ron Wyatt & his archeological finds, the meetings held by the Standish brothers (Hartland Institute), etc. Most official kiosks & ministries were in the HoosierDome itself.

Church politics filled the air. John Osbourne's group screened demos of the Celebration movement, Morris Venden's scandal was in full print, and the Church officially denied the anti-Papal message of the Great Controversy in the Indianapolis Star. GC President Neal Wilson made the rounds with a bodyguard while Fred Allaback played guitar in the lobby.

Then about six weeks later Jim Arrabito died with two of his sons in a private plane crash in Alaska.

My copy of GC with Arrabito's photographs broke apart just from normal use. Did all of them have poor binding? I'm going to have my copy rebound.

I've distributed the Great Controversy, but I would ask for a donation. Was I wrong for doing that?

I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.

I don't think so Kountzer, it's all about time and place.

It is a known fact, speaking with my salesman hat on, that people are more likely to use a product and be interested in it if they do pay at least some fee. Even a fee that includes a profit margin for the salesman, especially if he is a colourter. In "business" Sister Whites counsel is clear, we should operate at a profit, doing all we can to lower the expense. As it concerns our publishing houses they are instructed to NOT take work that will result in more expense than income. Just common sense really...

I have some friends that have "been there" for me at various times in my life, I wouldn't think of charging them a fee. They send ME books (political stuff), I thank them, and read at least a couple of chapters out of respect.

...all though, I couldn't make it past two chapters from the latest right wing nut talk show host without gagging. :)

That same summer (1990) Marshall Grosboll preached at the Hartland campmeeting (Virginia). His vision was fresh, alive, infectious. He had left the official ministry to start Steps to Life, an independent outreach. One could sense straightaway his living faith and firm grasp of the gospel, rejecting formalism.

He had one year left. In July 1991, Marshall Grosboll died with his wife and two children in a private plane crash in Idaho.

Yes, I remember that.

I was in touch with Steps to Life at one time. I had read many of their articles in their monthly paper. I decided to mail one of my booklets to them to see if they would share it with their followers. I got a letter telling me that they would if I would bring some changes in it, that I needed to focus more on obedience to the law. Yet in my booklet it had been made crystal clear more than once that one who comes to God daily, just as he is, sinful, helpless, dependent, trusting wholly in the merits of the blood shed for him on Calvary's cross, the righteousness of Christ is brought into his life and it is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God.

Somehow they missed that.

For years, I had read many articles from their paper. I could agree with much that was said in their articles but the necessity of daily appropriating the merits of Christ in order to receive His righteousness to fill up the measure of the law's requirements in the life was completely missing.

It is also missing in the publications of the 1888 Message Study Committee.

I do not say this to criticize either of them but only as an observation.

In my booklet, which can be read on my website, the emphasis is on the merits and the righteousness of Christ and how to appropriate both in order to achieve obedience. Steps to Life's reaction reminded me of this statement Mrs. White made in 1888:

"Oh, be so full of the message that it is like fire shut up in your bones, that you cannot hold your peace. It is true, men will say, 'You are too excited, you are making too much of this matter (merits and righteousness of Christ), and you do not think enough of the law (obedience to the law); now, you are to think more of the law; don't be all the time reaching for this righteousness of Christ, but build up the law.' Let the law take care of itself. We have been at work on the law until we get as dry as the hills of Gilboah, without dew or rain. Let us trust in the merits of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. May God help us that our eyes may be anointed with eyesalve that we may see." E.G. White, 1888 Materials, Vol.2, p.557.

As we make it our lifebusiness to look to Jesus and to accept His merits which it is our privilege to claim, the Lord clothes us with His own robe of righteousness and His righteousness is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God. See T.M.92,93,97 and F.W.65,66.

Mrs. White, again and again, spelled the 1888 message of the merits and righteousness of Christ in clear, distinct lines and yet it is a mystery and a wonder that so few among us even today seem to undersand it even though it is simple as ABC.

"There is not one in one hundred who understands for himself the Bible truth on this subject that is so necessary to our present and eternal welfare. When light begins to shine forth to make clear the plan of redemption to the people, the enemy works with all diligence that the light may be shut away from the hearts of men." 1 S.M.360.

On Sabbath, may 11, 1889, at Ottawa, Kansas, a short time after the 1888 Minneapolis meeting, Mrs. White gave a speech in which she said,

"' I want,' says one ' to reason out this matter.' Well, reason it out if you can. ' The wind bloweth where it listeth,' and you can hear the sound thereof, but you cannot explain it. You cannot explain this faith that lays right hold upon the merits of the blood of a crucified and risen Saviour to bring Christ's righteousness into your life. Clothed with the righteousness of Christ and not your own righteousness, you will not depend upon what you can do or what you will do," for "Christ's righteousness accomplishes everything." "The matter of salvation is just as simple as ABC. But we don't understand it." Manuscript 1, May 1889, Ottawa, Kansas; see Faith & Works, 65,66,27,64.

From the 1888 Manuscripts, Vol.2,p.557, we read:

"You want to be like little children, hanging upon the merits of a crucified and risen Saviour, and then you will be fortified. (fortified to keep all the commandments of God). How? The angels of God will be around you as a wall of fire; the righteousness of Christ, which you claim, goes before you, and the glory of God is your rearward. May God sanctify our tongues, our thoughts, our minds, that we may dwell upon heavenly themes (necessity of appropriating to ourselves the merits and righteousness of Christ), and that we may impart that knowledge and light to others." Ms 9, 1891. *parenthesis supplied
