Best paper-back Great Controversy to hand out?

I have that one also, but don't use it much anymore. I have the newest Comprehensive data base that includes all of EGW plus the commentairies and a bible study guide, with multiple search criteria. I think it was around a $100, more or less, can't remember. This one has to be electronically registered to a single computer to "unlock" it, so it can't be copied and shared (nor should it be due to copyrights and all).

...other wise, I'd mail you a copy... :)

OK, so it looks like that is the newest one. It's no wonder I got this older version for $20.00, then. I didn't know about the new one. I probably have those books in my library, but it is so much more efficient to have them on the computer. I don't know now how I got along with it. You can do such amazing research and so quickly!

Just got back from Florida folks! Weather down there was amazing. :)

Got a newsletter update from Amazing Discoveries, and I see they have a new Great Controversy. This is one of the best paper-backs I've seen:

http://amazingdiscoveries.org/webstore/us/p/white-the-great-controversy-illustrated

A bit pricey, but I'd rather hand out one expensive copy to a real honest soul than dozens of people who you really do feel fully persuaded that they will take the book seriously.

Lysimachus, good to see ya back. I recently made a CD audio disc with three chapters of Desire of Ages, Gethsemane, the trial and Calvary to hand out to select folks. Some who have VERY short attention spans and some who can't read well (or at all). Audio CD so they can play it in anything that accepts a normal CD (unlike an MP3 CD).

I'm going to follow that up with three chapters from something like the Great Controversy. How it began in heaven, something in the middle and then the 2nd coming. All in a "nut shell" of about an hour of listening time. I'm thinking for the first chapter something out of "Spirit of Prophecy" Volume 1 as that seems to have a short concise picture of the war in heaven. Total length cannot exceed an hour of audio as that is the limit with an audio CD in normal format.

Got to get the word out in various ways....

I did want to get a few really nice editions to send to some of my more wealthy friends. Like my buddy in Sacramento who has fallen on hard times. It's been so rough he will have to drive his Lamborghini another year before he can trade it in for a new one this time around... (true). :)

John317 (or anyone),

I heard that The (New, Illustrated) Great Controversy, put together by James Arrabito, is out of print? Is this why I cannot find a good seller on the net? Seems to mainly be on Amazon, but it disturbs me that publishers like Adventist Book Center, Remnant Publications, Teach Services, Review & Herald Publishing, etc. etc. are not selling this masterpiece version of The Great Controversy.

You can't beat the glossy illustrations. You can't be the authentic hard-cover. You can't beat the introduction. You can't beat the formatting, and paintings, and comments.

Instead, most Adventist publishing associations sell cheap Great Controversy books that have no pictures, and little appeal to this modern generation that loves to have visuals, charts, and comments. This generation is very media-oriented.

If it's true that The (New, Illustrated) Great Controversy is out of print, I'm going to get my hand on several copies before they're all gone.

And by the way, that New Illustrated Great Controversy (not to be confused with James Arrabito's version) sold by Amazing Discoveries is a Hard Cover, not a paper-back. Which is better. I asked them over the phone who it's put together by, and they said it comes from Denmark somewhere and they are trying it out. But the lady didn't know much more than that. It looks amazing.

That must be the one I saw yesterday at the ABC in Loma Linda. I agree, it looks great. I almost bought it but will get it another time for my daughter.

My copy of Arrabito's version broke apart. The bindings were not strong. I love that copy and will need to pay a book-binder to put it back together. I hope most copies of it were strong. Are your copies of it still in good condition?

I haven't seen it for sale anywhere for quite a while, so I'm not suprised to learn it may have gone out of print.

I hope someday they print the New Illustrated Great Controversy in paperback. That way it will have a far greater circulation.

We have sold the Illustrated GC for years but I was unaware that it is now OOP.

Here is the new one that we sell. I noticed in Amazon that there are a few copies of the old one still available but who knows for how long.

But I had a flip through this one and I quite like it:

I do love mine. My sister gave it to me. It sure would be nice to be able to hand those out.

I Googled "Great Controversy illustrated," I think. But any ABC should have this

I like the reader-friendly format and this one has LOTS of illustrations!

Yep, that's the one I saw yesterday. I'm really excited about it. I don't remember the price but it seems like it was something like $25.00.

Thanks Gail! Appreciate you pointing that out.

My question is, if any ABC should sell it, why doesn't the official ABC site sell it? At least I can't find it on the official site anyway.

Interesting. I wonder why Amazing Discoveries would sell it for only $15.95 then?

I just called the book store and was told it is $24.95 plus tax.

The clerk said they have one more copy on the shelf, but they will be getting in a shipment pretty soon. He also said they are selling well.

Well I'm definitely excited about it. It's a refreshing new look that still maintains that authentic, historical touch to it. Something to be proud of in your book shelf for a change.

I agree!

I'm not sure why AD has it for less. For us that would be just about cost. It could be that they are buying quantity and worked out a special price or that they are doing that to push the book and not making a profit on that item. It could be a "lost leader" for them, which is to say, it's an item that they are taking a loss on to attract people to the site. It's hard to say without knowing, but weigh out the rates and go for it!

Ok, I just did some digging and we are selling the book for $19.99 Cdn. We could match the AD price if someone pushed for it, but that would put us under our break-even point.

So, it is possible. Looking at the book, though, I think that $19.99 is a fair retail price.

Yeah, that makes sense Gail. AD might be taking a loss indeed.

I went ahead and purchased it directly from the publishers. Got the 5-book $49.75 package deal. That means I got them for $10.00 each! Can't wait!

Those are OK for the 'special people' you wish to 'gift'... If, for instance, you are giving them out at "every opportunity" it gets a little pricey. I am sure that there are organizations out there that can supply the paper back non-illustrated edition reprints. I pick mine up at thrift shops for about 50 cents each. Nuff Sed

So I purchased the new GC books, and everything about them is amazing and perfect--except one major flaw. They left out the Introduction. I would like all of your help here by writing to WWLE and complaining about this same thing. The more of us the better.

Go here: https://www.wwle.org/contact-form.php

Hit them all 3 ways...the email form, and the 2 emails they provide by Bob and Allan.

I wrote WWLE the following:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear WWLE (Bob Henrickson and Allan Jensen),

First, I would like to commend the impressive work you have done in creating one of the best Great Controversy books of all time. The solid binding, beautiful hard-cover, illustrations, and gloss-like paper are more than one could ask for, and especially at such a reasonable price. I purchased 5 of these books, and am extremely excited about sharing them with as many people as possible.

However, there is only one small, yet major hindrance that has greatly disappointed me. I noticed that the Introduction written by Ellen White was completely left out of this book. It immediately starts out with Chapter 1, but the Introduction is so vital, especially for a new person. It helps to arouse great interest in reading the whole book, and emphasizes its vast importance. The Introduction is by Ellen White herself, so it would seem only fair to include her Introduction into her own book. Without her Introduction the book feels incomplete. Including a Preface in addition to that would be better yet.

Is there any particular reason why you decided to leave the Introduction out ? Once the Introduction is included, this book would be perfect. I believe many, including myself, would feel more comfortable and excited to recommend this new version of the Great Controversy.

May God richly bless,

Marcos

I wonder why they would have done this. It makes no sense. It is terribly important to read it. I'm currently reading it with my youngest daughter, and I noticed the copy I got for her also omits the Introduction.

My hunch is that they left it out because of Ellen White's statement that she was shown these events in vision. I can't see any other reason for leaving it out.

I completely agree with you that the Introduction is very vital.

Allan Jensen responded to me.

Here is what he said:

Quote:
Dear Marcos

Thank you very much for your response. I am sorry that you are unhappy about our leaving out the preface.

Let me tell you our reasons for that. In this book there is exactly 480 pages - this is 32pages 15 times. A bookbinding maschine has normally only 15 stations. In order to have the preface we had to make the 16th signature - which would need the bookbinder collect the sheets twice and therefore make the book more expensive. Sorry it was only to make the book as afordable as possible.

We are working on a way to get the preface in the book and at the same time keep the price, but maybe it will be impossible.

Thanks again for your comments - and we will consider them carefully.

Please pray for us - we try to do our best.

God bless

Allan Jensen

WWLE

I responded to him with the following:

Quote:
Thank you very much Allan. Keep in mind that I do love the book very much. I am sharing it with everyone. However, my concern hinged on the fact that I plan to give this book to a dear friend of mine who is just learning about Adventism. I wanted to give her a Great Controversy that really hit home—with pictures, etc. But when I saw that the Introduction was not included, I had second thoughts about whether I should give this version to her. Then came to my mind how many other people might have this same concern.

I most certainly see the problem you are facing, and I’ll be praying that you will find a resolution. Nonetheless, I am thankful for the incredible work you were able to accomplish thus far in this impressive and high-quality version of The Great Controversy.

Keep in mind that more than the Preface, I’m speaking mainly of the Introduction. Most Great Controversies have both the Preface and the Introduction. It’s hard for me to imagine that you’d be able to fit both of them in it. But if you’re able to include of the two, I’d encourage to shoot for the introduction. But if you can do both, then all the better.

Once again, I thank you for the hard work you’ve put into this, and I thank you for sharing the technical bookbinding reasons for why you were forced to leave out the Introduction. I’ll pray you find a resolution, but if not, I perfectly understand. And also, thank you for considering my comments carefully.

May God richly bless!

Marcos
