M. T. Cross Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Since I have been here I have asked some questions. They have gone largly unanswered, responded to with other questions, or answered with random Bible verses rather than a direct answer. What I would like is an honest - well thought out answer to them. One from the heart, one that is the respondants opinion, not just some quote from either the Bible or EGW. I am asking these questions with sincerity. Yes I will likely want to discuss the answers. 1. Why should I believe the Bible over any other spiritual writing? 2. Why should I believe it was divinely inspired? 3. Why should I believe that your God is the only God? Or better than any other Gods? 4. Why should I accept that the SDA church has more truth than any other Christian denomination. They all claim to have the truth too 5. Why should I accept the Christian philosophy over Buddhism, Shinto, Islam, Hindu, Asatru, Neo-Druidry, Helllenism, Kemetisism, or any other religion?
BobRyan Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Start with Daniel 2 and 7-9 - there we find world history predicted out to 2500 years. That turned out to be very compelling for many atheist and agnostics. In the case of Dr. Walter Veith and professor of Zoology in one of the universities in S. Africa it was the turning point from atheist to creationist and eventually lead to being an SDA. His testimony is on the web. in Christ, Bob John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." COL 316.
M. T. Cross Posted November 30, 2011 Author Posted November 30, 2011 Well Bob, I am neither an atheist or agnostic. But let me ask you this. In my questions there I am asking why I should believe the Bible over anything else. Doesn't giving suggested Bible reading as a reply seems? Also you want me to read a prophecy. Great, but why should I take that prophecy over any other one? There have been thousands of prophecies over the years. Why is that one more compelling and correct than one from a different religion?
Moderators Kevin H Posted November 30, 2011 Moderators Posted November 30, 2011 Empty Cross: The Holy Spirit works on everyone, and every group has both light and error. The other gods are either forces of nature, or in other religions the most high god are where all the forces of nature come together. Yes, this is based on the Bible which you are asking some questions about: however at least look at the theory. The God if the Bible is not a force of nature, but the creator of the forces of nature. A God who is both outside of time and space yet has stepped inside of time and space. The other gods are worshiping the created rather than the creator. But the Holy Spirit stil works with them. We are all making choices that are making us more like Jesus or more selfish. At the end of time God does not say to some "Ok you can go into heaven" and to others "You have to go to hell" God just shows up in full glory and we either find it heaven to be with God, or hell to be with God. The issue is simply that we have more evidence about God to be able to study and to help us make choices.

All right, thank you for the response btw - and actually taking the time to give some valid thoughts. Now, however. It is true that some of the other gods are nature based deity. Absolutely. I often wonder about them being called Gods at all, they may well be nothing more than entities that the divine manifested for a purpose here on earth. I don't see that they should be worshipped, but I think knowledge and wisdom can be gained from them However. If you look at either Greek or Nordic Gods you will find a difference. There is creation stories there. Or claims of being the creator just like the Christian God. In Nordic myth Odin and his 2 brothers (not ethe trinity similarity there) created the first man and woman. There is also the story of Ragnarok in which Odin gives up his life in order to kill the evil "beast" for mankinds salvation. Really not that much different than the Christian God. So again the question is - why choose the Christian story over that one?

12tribes Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Well Bob, I am neither an atheist or agnostic. But let me ask you this. Great, but why should I take that prophecy over any other one? There have been thousands of prophecies over the years. Why is that one more compelling and correct than one from a different religion? The prophecies in the Bible have all come true. Do you know that Hitler was told the prophecy of Daniel 2 that Europe would never be united? He set out to prove the Bible wrong and failed. Saddam Hussein knew the prophecy in the Bible that the ancient city of Babylon would never be rebuilt and tried to prove the Bible wrong by building it and failed. Why did they both fail? Because we have a more sure word of prophecy. I am sure there are other examples as well. Galatians 3:29(29) And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Igakusei Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 No I have not - worth reading? I'd recommend it. It provides a good history lesson and insight into the culture that produced the Bible that helps you understand it more accurately in context--whether you believe that it's the inspired word of God or not. It basically traces the history of the three major monotheistic religions (and their concepts of God) back to their common origin in the ancient Hebrews. Check out the reviews on Amazon; it has quite a few, so you can see why the people that like it like it, and why the people that hate it don't. I believe in life before death
Igakusei Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 The prophecies in the Bible have all come true. Do you know that Hitler was told the prophecy of Daniel 2 that Europe would never be united? Saddam Hussein knew the prophecy in the Bible that the ancient city of Babylon would never be rebuilt and tried to prove the Bible wrong by building it and failed. Why did they both fail? Because we have a more sure word of prophecy. I am sure there are other examples as well. Really? I barely get three chapters into Genesis before I find one that falls flat on his face. Did Adam die the day he ate the forbidden fruit? Que rationalization about how death entered the world on that day... but that's not what it says. God prophecies that Cain will be a fugitive and vagabond, but then Cain almost immediately settles down and builds a city. Que rationalization about how he must have been a fugitive and vagabond for a while before building the city (but they're just making that up!). God promises Abram and his descendants the entire land of Canaan... Que rationalization about how that will happen at the second coming. Right (you'll begin to notice a pattern here; failed prophecies simply haven't been fulfilled yet). Jesus promises (in three of the four gospels) to return again before "this generation" has passed. Que rationalization about how he was talking about the generation at the end of time, despite nothing in the text indicating this. Has there ever been a more obvious cop-out? God promises that none among his followers or among their animals will be infertile. Wait, what? I can do this all day, without even having to bring up the fact that most of the so-called messianic prophecies originally had absolutely nothing to do with the messiah, didn't come true, and were commandeered by early Christians to point towards Christ. And then stories were written into the gospels specifically to fulfill them. Matthew is especially guilty of this; notice that he has Jesus riding both a donkey and a colt during the triumphal entry. There are endless rationalizations for this one too, but I guess the overarching point here is that we're basing the conclusion that all of these prophecies came true on the assumption that they all came true. When you assume that they came true, you can invent all sorts of stories that don't actually exist in the Bible to explain them away. But then it's not exactly honest to conclude "See? They all came true!" No they didn't, you made them come true by filling in the blanks to tell a different story. I believe in life before death

Administrators Gail Posted December 1, 2011 Administrators Posted December 1, 2011 EmptyCross, when you ask the question of why you should have a look at the Bible: In the gospel of John it is recorded that Jesus said that He has living water to give out, and when you drink from it you will never again thirst. Never again! How many people living the life we lead are looking for something refreshing that will satisfy their thirsty souls? Not many sources on earth can truly provide that. That would pique MY curiosity! That is quite a claim Jesus made! Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

The atheist will not be convinced by prophecies fulfilled in Christ's ministry because they are not at all sure that the details of Christ's ministry are true. I sometimes speak about objective unbiased readers using critical thinking. This is case where that helps a lot. in Christ, Bob I don't think I am either better or worse than an atheist or agnostic. I am simply of a different mind set. Honestly Bob, I think a lot of Bible predictions can be twisted to fit events in the last couple thousand years but I really don't see how any of them have come true. We can do the same thing with Divinci's prophecies. I can go see a "psychic" and I promise you that some of what they say WILL come true. Seems to me all prophesies seem to fit that description. They are usually vague enough that one can make them fit. Let me tell you this - I really would LIKE to believe this stuff. But it just does not ring true to me. Thats kind of the point of this. I am asking you to give me your personal thoughts on these questions. How you arrived to the place where you believe what you believe.

But I often look at the rest of the Bible and see it not coinciding with his message. I see Christianity and see it not being anything like the message of Christ. But so did Buddha, and really that would be one of those religions that often seems to satisfy the thirsty soul. But that as well I think misses the mark in spots.

Why should I accept the Christian philosophy over Buddhism, Shinto, Islam, Hindu, Asatru, Neo-Druidry, Helllenism, Kemetisism, or any other religion? Because my God answers. You say your God answers and proves. Now that has been the exact opposite of my experience. Now bear in mind that I am not saying that if God answers with a NO that he has not anwered. I just am lacking in the experience of him answering at all. Would you be able to expand on that a bit? Also are you sure that no other God answers? Also, most religious or spiritual writings can point out that if you do xxx that yyy will happen. What makes the Bible - in your personal view - any better of a guide than others? How has God proved it to be divinely inspired?
BibleOnly Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Well, my experience was that I went to a lot of churches that told me that if I 'gave my heart to Jesus', I had the Holy Spirit. I was often explicitly told that this worked even if nothing happened, if I felt no different. I had a low self esteem and a lot of issues from a messed up childhood and I drank a lot. Every time I joined a church, I'd feel an emotional high, but it would just wear off, and if something bad happened, I'd drink again, feel bad, blame myself and find a new church. When I received the Holy Spirit, I spoke in tongues, just like the Bible says. But that was only the outward manifestation of an inward experience that included me knowing in a moment that I was OK, no matter what I'd been through, that I'd never drink again, and that God was real and had answered me. Now, I'm sure that there are those here who would say that they found out about the Sabbath, joined a nice SDA and stopped drinking, but if you read the posts here, people talk about gradual change and some things taking longer to over come than others. That is not God's way, and what matters most about my story, to me, is that I tried the whole 'he just needs a better peer group and the support of some friends' way of joining various churches, and it did nothing for me that lasted. I've been a Christian for half my life now ( I am 42 ) with no 'relapses', not because I've never had problems in life, but because I received something real that was greater than my problems and greater than the support of a church. I honestly have never heard of anyone who follows any other God whose stories are any different from the 'christian' churches where they don't have the Holy Spirit, it comes down to 'when something nice happens, say God did it', and nothing like what I experienced. The Christian God, in the Bible, is the only one I know of that offers an immediate and evident proof of His action. And I ask myself, why would people writing something that was not true, place such an onus on the God they were inventing ? No other God that I know of, sets such conditions on Himself. "Also, most religious or spiritual writings can point out that if you do xxx that yyy will happen" I'm not talking about moral concepts that improve your general life. Sure, most religions have those. I am talking about 'if you repent, get baptised and pray to God, He will give you the Holy Spirit with evidence'. That is the thing that changed my life, but some here claim that when I called on God, the devil healed me of all my afflictions, something God had failed to do. I'm not sure that's a logical position. I do think it's easier to believe in a god who does not answer, even if he's not there, than to believe in a God who answers in a way that is proscribed, and does not change, if He's not there, there won't be an answer.
M. T. Cross Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 Fair enough, and thank you for sharing that. Personal stories of addiction can be really hard to share sometimes, I know that first hand. So again thank you for being so open. I really admire that. Now that said. I know several followers of the Asatru/heathen belief system that have an almost identical story - just insert the Northern Gods. Before I share my thoughts on the hows and whys of that, I would value some well considered thoughts from Christians on that.
BibleOnly Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 I think I've said what I think. AA requires you to answer to a god, but it can be your teddy bear if you like. AA works, a lot of the time. For some people, a concept of God and a peer group is enough. What's important about my story, to me, is not that I stopped drinking when I found God, so much as that I tried it the way that most people here would suggest ( although I went to church on the wrong day, and that probably explains it to them ), and it did nothing lasting. Believing in God and having a peer group did not help me, I needed more than that. That I tried both, proves to me that I got an answer from God and not just the shot in the arm I needed from the idea God was on my side.

Why should I accept the Christian philosophy over Buddhism, Shinto, Islam, Hindu, Asatru, Neo-Druidry, Helllenism, Kemetisism, or any other religion? 1. You shouldn't! The bible as we have it today was a creation of a very evil man. Try this: Read ONLY the words of Jesus given to us by His eyewitnesses (Luke Mark and Paul were not eyewitnesses) and then ask yourself IF anyone other than God could answer questions from the Jewish leaders like He did? Look for key texts such as Matthew 24:4-5 and all of the words from those eyewitnesses that make then look really stupid. 2. You can't believe anything was inspired except what Jesus verified in His words about what was in the OT and what the eyewitnesses wrote because of what Jesus told them in John 14:26 and 17:17-21. 3. Clearly, because of what God wrote in the Ten Commandment, there is NOT only one god--as He commanded HIS People to not have any other gods other than Him. The second part of this question is simple to answer-IF you truly want eternal life, then one MUST obey the ten commandments (all of them) because God the Creator will NOT shack up! He will only be your God IF you agree to do what it takes for Him to be your God. 4. The Adventists profess to keep all of the ten commandments and meet all of the points of the new KOH as found in Matthew 25:1-13. Try to find another group that meets all of these points!? You can't! (True, they are all now sleeping except a few (Rev. 3:4) but the 5 wise come from this group before the time of trouble.) 5. You shouldn't except the "Christian Philosophy" over any other man made religion as the Christians were invented by Paul. The very first christian church was perhaps the most evil orgainization that has ever been, and all of the other churches now have this one as their 'mother'. Jesus NEVER came to this world to set up a Christian Church! He came to testify to the truth which are the words of Jesus that His Father gave Him to testify about. Now tell me, is there anything wrong with my answers to your questions? If so, please provide the proof from the words of Jesus. Thanks.

The thing is, his premise does not include acceptance of Jesus' words or the rest of the Bible, so how is that a fair test ?
