It's a master craft of Satan to destroy the young people and many old. It arouses the lower passions and is not safe to hear and especially to watch with the lowdown body language. It is a programing of evil from the pit.

Many of singers of it and like music have come to realize they've sold out their souls to the devil.

1Jo 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Agreed. Now how do we protect our households from it?

"Now how do we protect our households from it?"

A question the Pastor and myself were discussing recently in referrence to the Adventist school near the church. HOW can we reach the young people SO caught up in music? It was kind of depressing recognizing that the hold is so powerful it seem all but impossible. I was encouraged to see how deeply concerned and aware he is of the problem though.

He's been preaching a lot lately, not just on music, but also video's, movies, books, TV, etc. There is hope! I DO see a few responding, taking the message seriously. I see others where it went right over the head, like they didn't even hear or know what the sermon was about!

Oh here is a topic near and dear to my heart.

You want to "save your children" from Rock'n'Roll? Tell me then what is going to save them from the world around them?

This world is so full of insane pressures for the youth. It was when I was younger, it is more so now. It gets harder for them every single generation.

Music offers a release for those frustrations, it offers a way to let the anger out. It offers comfort. It lets kids know that they are not alone.

I can tell you this much - if it were not for Heavy Metal I would have ended my life well before I was 20. It saved me more than once. If that is the big bad EVIL - then so be it.

Not sure what is meant by that statement "the big Evil." When I was growing up RnR was big, and obviously its still that way. I really enjoyed listening to it. Until probably a number of years ago, I actually started listen to what was really being implied, not just the words. I am guessing that what you like about HM is playing the music. Do you ever wonder about the words or do you like myself just enjoy the music. I see nothing wrong with that. Obviously as RnR has progressed, each older generation tells the next how bad the new RnR is compared to what they listened to. LOL, isn't that the way it goes. Like I said, for me I really loved it, but as I've grown older I have come to the point that it really has no more value for me other than liking the music every once in a while when I happen to change stations and hear some old Beatles, Rollingstones, Doors, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, etc. I prefer some of the older stuff from the late '50s and early '60s. Never got into HM. just to loud for me. I prefer Christian music now. I do believe as we get older our tastes do change and for the better I hope. :)

PK - it was kind of a sarcastic comment. I have been told by Adventists all my life how evil HM is. Yet it saved my life.

I was in a number of metal bands in my younger years. I was the vocalist/lyricist so yeah I pay attention to the lyrics.

The thing about metal is there are so many sub genres of it one can find almost any kind of subject matter. A great deal of the heavier metal deals with spiritual subject matter, a lot of it is about trying to make yourself a better person, believing in yourself and making positive choices. It also is the one genre of music that covers issues that a lot of people feel and are scared to talk about cause they don't know how. So it gives people that need that kind of support a shoulder.

Its funny PK - I was waiting for my musical tastes to mellow as I got older. Its the exact opposite - I listen to heavier stuff, I write heavier stuff. Its kinda wierd really. Except maybe its because I have gotten more socially aware and the heavier stuff is more fitting with that.

I kinda thought it was a strange kind of success that my kids tell *me* to turn my music down. ;-)

That's interesting. There was a time in my life when, if it were not for alcohol, I may have killed my self. It gave me a release, and although I knew it was temporary, I used it.

I also have a lifetime experience with rock n roll. I used to play for money. I don't anymore, and I wouldn't, because of the lifestyle that goes with it.

But to this day when I plug in my guitar, rock and roll comes out. I can't help it. It sounds good, and it's fun to play. I can play other stuff too, but not as good.

Now here's the weird part. I don't listen to R&R anymore. Not in my car, and not in my home. If I do it bothers me. But if I'm playing my guitar and some classic r&r starts coming out, or something that I made up, it doesn't bother me. Maybe one day it will.

My response "Kids thats not a guy, its a woman"

I thought that about drugs too. Of course in the end they nearly killed me.

Iplayed it for money too. I would again, because I realize that lifestyle does not need to go with it.

I have heard you play dude, you are very good!

My son thinks it amusing that I fall asleep to loud music. I once fell asleep during a set by Opeth at a concert.

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

*Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth.

(And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)

That is an accomplishment!!! Opeth is a fantastic band.

I guess I didn't mention the drugs, but they were definitely a part of it. Thanks for the compliment. I thought that was a crummy video I did though. I need to make a better one. Have you got one you can show us?

As far as not having the lifestyle go with it, I don't know of anybody who plays rock and roll, that I could hang out with and spend a lot of time with, (it's necessary) without a huge risk of getting sucked back into the whole drinking and drugging thing eventually.

Changing my playgrounds and my playmates was part of how I got away from all that.

Besides, I think it was God who gave me a new trade, and a new way of making a living. I guess if you had to do it to survive, that would be different.

I willa gree that musicians have a tendancy to get into substance abuse. But that is certainly not confined to rock music. It really seems to be an issue with people in the arts period. Artists, musicians, writers etc. I know a fair number of musicians that I could spend that time with and not have to partake. Of course they have mostly all been down that road before too. I think its just a flaw in creative people.

I posted a couple things I have written in the secular music forum. I don't have a video camera that is worth using (just a really bad one on my normal cam) so its just a pictures to go with the music.

I go to sleep listening to "trance" or "club", even some of the newer heavy beat stuff...all on my iPod.

But, why ? Why do kids need to be saved from music ? Why do you seem to be saying that your kids need to be 'saved' from all popular culture ? Is the only way to keep kids in the SDA, to hide the alternatives from them ?

Is Christian music OK ? http://www.jesusmetal.net.au is my website, I play guitar, and bass, and I have a recording studio. People have come to know God through conversations that started because of the Christian songs I write. Does the beat and the guitar solos completely destroy the value of the words to my songs ? Are any styles of music acceptable ?

You're joking, right ? I can't be sure, I went to at least one church who, when they found out I played guitar, asked if my guitar had 'that satanic beat that makes children kill themselves'. I feel sad for people who are so full of fear and lacking in faith. Music is music, it moves people, but it cannot control them. You think all music is of the devil ? If you only think rock is of the devil, perhaps you should trace back the reasons that rock was singled out, they were mostly racist, because rock came out of blues, which was 'colored' music.

Do you ever wonder about the words or do you like myself just enjoy the music.

The typical heavy metal fan knows a great deal about the words to their songs. When I was in high school, the other kids listened to pop music, which was mostly about fornication. 'Glam' metal also was this way, but real heavy metal talked about social injustice, about history, and about people who were told they were no good by society in general standing together and believing in themselves. I certainly found becoming a Christian to be a more meaningful support than music was, and the words mean a lot less to me now that I don't have those feelings of being outcast and alone. However, the words were almost always half the point, for me as a teenager. The bands deliberately bait old people not willing to listen, because that divide helps push their market. For example, the band suicidal tendencies had tons of songs about killing yourself. But, if you read the words, they all turned out the same, that is, they were about feeling down but realising you were able to get through and show the people who put you down that they were wrong. When I first started going to churches, I briefly attended several who only ever talked about the 'power' of the Devil, particularly in rock music. They had no idea, they misquoted so many song lyrics, they just made themselves a joke.

At the end of the day, if the church is talking about the power of God, it's members won't look for support elsewhere, although they may like all sorts of music just for the music.

Cool to check out your site and listen to some of the songs (and discover you're another Aussie).

We're getting a bit of a critical mass of rockers here now. bwink

*grin* well, I'm glad you thought it was cool. Do you write songs too, or are you more of a rocker in terms of listening ?
