I play a bit of guitar, but don't really write songs. I should get my act together and record a bit at some point. I have 'written' a couple of instrumental things, just messing about on GarageBand, links below.

But yeah, mostly listening: pretty eclectic across the board, but certainly enjoying the more extreme end of the spectrum.

I can see rock and roll and speaking in tongues as entirely compatible BibleOnly. Both have the same author in my opinion, the evil doer. True religion should not be based on what "feels good", it should be based on solid biblical principles, logic and reason.

Am I serious? 100% serious! When I became a Christian I threw out a lot of CD's and I'm very careful about what music I listen now.

I agree with your statement. True religion should be based on reading the Bible and doing what it says. As for the rest, I am sad for you that you have so little faith in God that you live in fear of sounds. What music I listen to, even if it was indeed 'satanic', does not change what the Bible says. I never asked you to believe what I said because of my personal qualities, but because basic logic, reason and literacy demand that you do.

So what music do you listen to now ? Are you willing to say ?

Club, could you provide some biblical information that directly says that Rock Music is of the Devil?

Hey Bravus, these are pretty cool. Are you playing any guitar here, it all sounds very synthy, but in a good way. The 'XBox' one is very nice, very funky, almost Stevie Wonder. That has some guitar ?

Yes, I spotted the Ride On chords right away in the last one. You nailed the solo.

EmptyCross, it sounds like the music colored people listen to. Of COURSE it's of the devil !!!

EmptyCross, why, are you afraid of what the prophet might have to say on the subject?

"The things you have described as taking place in Indiana, the Lord has shown me would take place just before the close of probation. Every uncouth thing will be demonstrated. There will be shouting, with drums, music, and dancing. The senses of rational beings will become so confused that they cannot be trusted to make right decisions. And this is called the moving of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit never reveals itself in such methods, in such a bedlam of noise. This is an invention of Satan to cover up his ingenious methods for making of none effect the pure, sincere, elevating, ennobling, sanctifying truth for this time. . . . A bedlam of noise shocks the senses and perverts that which if conducted aright might be a blessing. The powers of Satanic agencies blend with the din and noise, to have a carnival, and this is termed the Holy Spirit’s working. . . . Those participating in the supposed revival receive impressions which lead them adrift. They cannot tell what they formerly knew regarding Bible principles."

A New Life [Revival and Beyond] (50)

I like music that has a clear and easy to understand message. If you cannot hear and understand the words, the music, what edificiation can come from it? What glory is given to God? The same reasoning applies to tongues! It serves no purpose to glorify God to the listeners who haven't got a clue what is being said! Rock and roll in particular but basically all forms of worldly music contain lyrics that cannot be understood clearly. It IS gibberish! If you CAN understand it, what IS the message? Does it glorify God?

Speaking in tongues is 100% Biblical, ClubV12. What Bible are you reading?

"EmptyCross, why, are you afraid of what the prophet might have to say on the subject?"

What prophet ? If the Bible doesn't say it, then why do you think it's true ?

"The senses of rational beings will become so confused that they cannot be trusted to make right decisions. And this is called the moving of the Holy Spirit."

I've never heard rock music called 'the moving of the Spirit'

"I like music that has a clear and easy to understand message"

OK, so you care about the words almost exclusively ? That's OK with me

"If you cannot hear and understand the words, the music, what edificiation can come from it? What glory is given to God?"

OK, so if I can understand the words, when I listen to it, and if they glorify God, then rock music is OK ? I have no trouble understanding the words of rock music. So, there's nothing wrong with rock music then, you just disapprove of non Christian music ? Does this mean you never watch TV ? Never go to a movie ? Never read a newspaper or read books apart from the Bible ?

"The same reasoning applies to tongues! It serves no purpose to glorify God to the listeners who haven't got a clue what is being said! "

Well, I've explained this, from the Bible. Paul says we speak not to men, but to God, and therefore in the church we should only speak with Holy Spirit inspired inspiration. But Paul says we do this because we don't know what to pray for and the Spirit gives us the words. So, the purpose is clearly explained in scripture.

" Rock and roll in particular but basically all forms of worldly music contain lyrics that cannot be understood clearly. It IS gibberish!"

I guess this is true for people who don't listen to it. I can listen to loud heavy metal and get the words, easily. But if your ear is not in tune to it, then you can't. As a musician, I can separate the instruments better than a non musician, but even non musician rock fans can understand the words. So, this argument is moot.

"It IS gibberish! If you CAN understand it, what IS the message? Does it glorify God?"

OK, so rock music is not the problem, worldly music is ? You're entitled to that view, it at least makes some sense, but it's not what you said. As a musician, I enjoy music for it's own sake, just like I can enjoy a movie without feeling I need to go out and emulate the main characters.

Wish I could take the credit, BibleOnly, but I just sampled the Accadacca stuff and 'sang' (using the term very loosely) over it. Let Angus do what he does best on the solo. There's actually none of my playing on any of those: need to figure out how to get my guitar playing into my laptop other than with its built-in mic! Was looking at the Amplug recently as a cheap way in. Should get my act together and lay down a GarageBand rhythm section to play over... maybe over the holidays...

Okay, we/'re going down that road of 'r &r' is evil again. The main issue with such a statement is that each persons definition is different, according to taste. So just what exactly is the 'sin' aspect???

Indeed - and, just exactly what is the rock aspect...? Not that simple. "I know it when I hear it?"

I already know where the discussion will go....if it doesn't 'glorify God' it's wrong. So what we have is limiting of whats acceptable. There is a lot of rhetoric on this forum from time to time that is not 'glorifying', but that's okay, because it will be denied that such is happening. It will be called 'righteous indignation'! We could go down the list of everyday activities, even those necessary to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that won't fit the definition of 'glorifying God'. But we can and will find reasons to justify them. ETC, thinking ETC, ETC....ETC, ETC...

(it's the beat...it's very sexual)

Ever here that one!

Yeah, you can buy simple plugs that channel your guitar in to the computer for recording.

I thought that solo sounded pretty stellar :-)

It's my experience over many years that the people most likely to assume that everyone is about to break out in wild fornication, is judging everyone else by their own low standards, and it's those who accuse, and not those who enjoy, say, music without feeling any desire to sin, who eventually succumb.

Anyone who says that all music must glorify God, needs to also never watch TV, or movies, or read the newspaper, or read books apart from the Bible, by the same logic. Personally, I can enjoy a movie without feeling I need to be super spiritual about it, although I do prefer music with a good message, which is why I set about creating it.

Club V12, I should add, no-one is saved or not saved because of their position on music. Paul says there are weak Christians and we should support them, not make them stumble. If you were a Christian, I would not argue with you about rock music at all, I'd let you grow in your faith until you moved past this issue you have with it.

This is true, but I believe the Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit causes us to have different interests than we had before He came into our lives.

I still enjoy Rock n'Roll but I very seldom listen to it because I spend so much of my time studying the Bible or writing about God and salvation.

Similarly, I used to spend hours every day reading good fiction. I very rarely read fiction any more. Why? Not because I think it's evil but because my interests have changed. I'm simply not as satisfied reading fiction as I once was.

My daughter recently gave me all of the music of Led Zepplan, and I enjoyed listening to some of it, especially their first two albums, but I really do get more joy out of singing and listening to Christian hymns than listening to any Rock music.

Having said that, though, I have no doubt that much Rock music and much fiction is of Satan.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

And you know, I love Mozart as much as the next person, but I can't help but remember what a fornicating baboon he was, every time I hear it. Many of the other composers were not much better, of course.

And for the same reason, I don't listen as much to the Doors as I used to.

It just shows that great creative genuises and artists are often moral and spiritual dwarfs.

Richard Wagner was a great composer but personally he was an evil man.

Well, I think that Jim Morrison was over rated, something he showed by the way he died. But, the Doors are OK, I have their best of.

I'm not saying we lose our humanity or our human interests. Christ certainly had human interests and He didn't lose His humanity. But Christ also loved righteousness and hated sin. The Holy Spirit will cause us to become more and more like Jesus if we are listening to the Holy Spirit speak to us.

What I'm talking about is going from doing the works of the flesh to having the fruits of the Spirit, as described in Galatians 5: 16-23. When we walk in the Spirit, we "shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."

1 1 John 2:6

whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

2 Cor. 3:18

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
