A Man Can Believe Because He Had Been Forgiven

Recommended Posts

Most preachers teach that unless a person believes in Christ, he cannot be forgiven. This teaching is against Scriptures.

Because of sin, an unforgiven man is separated from God (Isa 59:2), is dead in sin (Eph 2:1), and cannot do anything good (Jer 13:23).

Believing is a good act, and to ask the unforgiven man to first believe so he can be forgiven, is asking the unforgiven to do that which is impossible for the unforgiven to do.

The fact that men now are able to believe is proof enough men had been forgiven from all sins.

You have made some very interesting points

dgrimm60

Thanks. Although others may say that interesting points do not necessarily make up truth.

However, it is clear in the present issue, that many preachers ask the DEAD in sin to go to Christ to be made ALIVE!

Not very much unlike somebody telling an unconscious to go to the medic so he can be resuscitated. And in sin, a person is not only unconscious, he is DEAD.

Sadly, this is the brand of Gospel most preachers preach.

The Lord in 1888 told us that "The matter of salvation is just as simple as ABC" and then added these words, "But we don't understand it." Faith & Works,64.

We are not to feel that we are on probation and that we must prove to the Lord that we are reformed before we may claim His blessing.

"Jesus loves to have us come to Him just as we are, sinful, helpless, dependent." Idem,32.

"Present your case before God pleading the MERITS

of the blood shed for you upon Calvary's cross." Idem,106.

Christ is made unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification,

and redemption (1 Cor.1:30) as we come to God pleading the MERITS of the blood of a crucified and risen Saviour.

As we do this on a daily basis God clothes us with the robe

of Christ's righteousness and His righteousness accomplishes

everything as it made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God for righteousness is love and love is the

fulfillment of the law. Rom.3:25; 5:5; 13:10; Gal.5:6.

The Scriptures teach that to every man has been given a measure of faith (Rom.12:3) and since Jesus Christ is the Author and Finisher of that faith (Heb.12:2) a man may be exercising faith without even realizing it even before having accepted Christ as a personal Saviour. Only God is the judge of that faith. It is indeed the gift of God (Eph.2:9) to every man born into this world and if it is exercised (not stifled) in the least when impressions are made upon our hearts and minds by the Holy Spirit it can grow exceedingly as we are told in the Scriptures. 2 Thess.1:3. "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God," and "Christ is the Word." Rom.10:17; John 1:1,7.

"Who by Him do believe in God." I Peter 1:21.

You do not believe that God has dealt to every man the measure of faith?

Do you believe that God has dealt with every man differently?

I doubt he does, and I know I don't, and I agree with sky.

If God hadn't dealt to every man a measure of faith He would be unjust. Not every person ever born has read the Bible but yet we are told by Paul that those who obey the law without having ever heard/read it show the work of the law being written in their hearts. This is nothing other than the promises of the OT, such as Ezekiel 36:25-27, being fulfilled in them, and the only way we can receive righteousness from God is by faith. It's the only way to please Him. Thus every man has been dealt a measure of faith.

No?

Correct, no!

So, it depends on how much faith one has converted or increased the little faith he received into, whether he will be saved or not? Like faith were a 'talent' used profitably or let lie useless?

How is God going to deal with everyone the same?

God is the same. Being loving, merciful, kind, patient, and long suffering towards everyone. In this way everyone equally receives God's goodness.

but we are all different. different inheritance, circumstances of birth, different treatment as children, parents or one parent or no parents... wealth poverty or in-between, education or none or some, variations of intelligence, opportunity, advantages and or disadvantages.

valued or devalued...

so God takes all our uniqueness into consideration when he works with us. Each of us has a completely individualized plan because we are all so different. what speaks to me loud and clear may never speak to someone else, so all these differences are fully understood and taken into consideration.

the very measure we comprehend and the measure we respond to God is perfectly known by God.

He also carried every infirmity we have, every sorrow, every sin, every difficulty we endure. So he completely and profoundly knows our need and how to help us without violating our freedom of choice.

God communicates his love to every person as they are able to comprehend it, and he knows exactly what their response is, and anyone who loves God will be saved. anyone who does not love God, who would be uncomfortable in heaven, he will not force them to go there. God is love.

we all equally are given opportunity to know and to choose by the power of the Holy Spirit. In the presence of the awareness of God's love, faith awakens and becomes directed, drawing to ourselves God's working in us.

Jesus us the light that lights every man that comes into the world. The more you know and receive of this love, and understand the more blessings you will have to give to others.

so we share more of God's light to give more blessings into the world. It is not rocket science.

I think debbym answered your questions very well. Probably much better than I could have.

My point was that faith could not only come by reading God's word. If it did, then God would be unjust because not everyone has access to God's word.

God deals with each of us justly according to our circumstances, intellect, etc.... He has to or He is not a God of love.

Or is it the other way around - man is forgiven, and therefore is free to believe?

In so many miracles Christ Jesus performed, a couple were significantly based on forgiveness never asked/spoken for - "your sins are forgiven".

Forgiveness accepted, the miracle occurred...

having unforgiven sin does not leave one in a graceless state of stolid unbelief.

when adam and eve were hiding in the garden, they had not been forgiven, but they did not lose their knowledge of God.

when they heard God they fully recognized him, and they learned what sin cost and asked forgiveness and were forgiven. all in an atmosphere of faith and love. They fully trusted the redeemer to come and accepted the forgiveness. But it was not a cross-less experience.

when we are in sin God comes to us, and if we accept him he will lead us through the steps conviction, confession and forgiveness, and healing, and full restoration. true we cannot achieve or go through these steps in our own strength.

I guess we are on the same boat, brother: Forgiveness comes BEFORE believing.

I guess this brings up a couple of questions in my mind.

Why will we ask for forgiveness without at least some measure of belief(faith) that forgiveness will be granted upon our request?

I think I know the miracles Ted is referring to, and in the SOP we are told that the people in question desired forgiveness of their sins even more than they desired physical healing. Thus, since Christ reads the heart, forgiveness had already been asked for. He was simply responding to the heart's unspoken(aloud) desire.

We tremble when we ask for forgiveness, because though there is a measure of faith, there is also a measure of uncertainty which also occupies the the mind at that time.

One, because we misunderstand this specific concept of an "unforgivable sin" - crucifying the Lord afresh by sinning willfully after accepting Christ.

Two, because the idea Satan puts in our heads ("Gone too far this time for God to forgive!") lurks like a shadow.

Three, because we put a human patience limit on God's handling of our frailty, which leads to accepting #2...

Four, because we see the awfulness of our own sin (and coupled with the devil's piling on about how bad our sinfulness is, and how holy our God is), we entertain the thought that perhaps God may NOT really "forgive" even our sins at all...particularly if we have done so under a misunderstanding of what "human probation" is...

It is much like the concept of "justification" - we have doubts once God's Word on the subject comes into contact with the "Egypt" of our sinful flesh.

Yet, like justification, God's forgiveness is ALREADY extended out to us - long before we realize the need for it. Yet, God in His mercy may see the need to sweep aside certain consequences of living in a sinful world, in order for the believer to grasp the concept that, yes, God really IS in the business of saving the believer into the Kingdom, rather than looking for ways to pile on and leave the trembling, frail soul on the outside looking in.

It is then the soul is indeed free to realize the forgiveness already extended, and that the rest of God's promises extended to us are ALSO true for the trembling, frail soul.

All I can speak to with certainty on this subject is my own experience with God. It was after I realized God loved me that I asked for forgiveness, for up to that point in my life I had trusted no one. Absolutely no one had ever loved me for being me, so when I realized that God loved me for being myself my response couldn't have been any different than it was. And, when I asked there wasn't a shadow of a doubt in my mind that I would be forgiven.

Did I believe before I asked for forgiveness? Absolutely.

I've been through all 4 of those steps, at various points in my life...and I have tread the path of the words you wrote there as well.

All in all, it sounds a lot like a circular reasoning argument: I believed, and asked for forgiveness - because God had already forgiven.

I am not disagreeing here - just saying others (like me) have tread a different path (which sometimes winds over a path like yours), and have a different view of the beach ball... :)

Sadly, this is the brand of Gospel most preachers preach.

but it is most fortunate.

Jesus spoke to the man that had lain paralyzed for 30 years, and gave him a command that he was in his own power completely incapable of doing. But when he accepted the word of Christ, and willed to obey, the full power of God came into his body and mind and he rose up and walked.

yes God speaks to the completely dead, and they can actually hear at his command, and actually respond in His power, and actually live, loved, drawn to God, forgiven if they want it, and empowered if they choose it to live for God's glory.

and when we are dead in the grave, God will be able to speak and we hear him and come alive in transformed bodies, fully alive for eternity.

but when we speak to the dead, they just cannot hear us. This is why when we preach and speak the truth in Christ, it must be with the power of the life giver to enable those words to read dead ears, and dead hearts, and bring Christ before them to make a choice, and make a choice everyone will. Jesus said, what do you want me to do for you. and every possibility was opened up by the power of God's love.

Joeb,

You just opened the window to what I was speaking of above - about believing because we are forgiven.

The same love which willingly lays unborrowed life aside to ransom one such as me, also forgives me based upon the very same willingness.

When a soul truly realizes that God loves and forgives without measure, with the cross as evidence, there can be only 2 choices: turn away from Him (the mystery of sin), or accept and trust Him - even if all one's issues in life aren't resolved the way we think they ought to be with God at the helm.

Forgiven, then free to trust and believe....believing, and freely trusting in His forgiveness

Two sides of the wonderful coin of salvation.

LOL. Well, don't get upset with me, but I have another small quibble.....

Forgiveness is available, but not given, until we until we ask for it. It's available to all, but only those who ask for it receive it and the benefits of forgiveness. I know it's a really fine point of distinction, but it is all the same. It must be that way too because of the nature of sin.

Liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith.

Really??? ANOTHER quibble??? Say it ain't so!

My reply is Romans 2:4 - it is the riches of His kindness, tolerance, and patience which leads us to repentance.

My reply also hearkens back to Genesis 2:16,17 and 3:4 - at some point, we must show we are willing to choose to trust God, rather than believe an alternative to God. In asking for forgiveness, we effectively declare a choice to believe God to be right, and any alternative to be wrong.

So when you flip that salvation coin - which side comes up for you? No matter which side you call, you will still win.

Blessings,
