Yes, I agree. My late husband was a leading psychiatrist in Southern California. He said the homeless problem was exacerbated after the closing of state mental hospitals in California [i think it was in the '80s]. Most of the homeless are in fact mentally ill. Also, the jails are filled with the mentally ill. The Governor felt it would save money for the State to pay welfare to the mentally ill rather than to maintain a state hospital for them.

Also there was an increase in groups of "patients' advocates" who lobbied for the patients' right to refuse treatment. Which is illogical when one thinks about it: giving a mentally ill person the right to refuse the medication his doctor has prescribed for him, just compounds the problem rather than solves it. But when that happened, it removed the right of one's family to commit a mentally ill person to a hospital against his wishes. The problems with schizophrenia, then, are not so much to the patient himself but to his family. They're in a bind. A terrible situation.

I've been trying to catch up with this tragic news event. I am about a week behind. For the past six to eight weeks I've been disconnected from television, and radio. This type of media hasn't been totally away from me, but I am not up on current events. Things happen locally and nationally everyday in this information age.

When I first heard about this I thought it was some sort of news flashback to some earlier mass shooting in Colorado. It could happen anywhere. Colorado has had its fair share of these events lately. I mean, this was in Littleton Colorado again. If I remember correctly one of the first mass school shootings, if not the first, occurred in the same City. That's why I thought it was a news flashback to the earlier event.

Some questions and comments come to mind:

The emotional pain in Littleton, Co. must be tremendous.

How does an 18 year old student, or recent student, walk onto campus, in Littleton Co. of all places, with a full size shotgun?

The shooting of the seventeen year old girl, who passed away very recently, is eerily similar to the girl who was shot point blank, during the earlier event, for not renouncing her faith in Christ.

I have more, but this is not the most pleasant topic to discuss.

You just described the long, ongoing problem my family, namely my Grandmother, when she was with us, my Aunts and Uncles, have had with my Aunt Gloria.
