Eating out on restaurants is more an issue of denying others (albeit nonbelievers) the Sabbath rest. Look...if this is your belief go for it...but I don't fully share it. Doesn't food, electricity and things like this fall under essentials? To me it's in the gray area....Seems like majoring in minors. Today I visited a man in prison. I take money so I can buy him food there....On my way home I get hungry, so I stop and get a ham sandwich and beer....Just joking, I usually stop and get a fish sandwich and drink....It don't see that as wrong.... The issue to me is, does eating out sidetrack from what the day is about?...Eating out doesn't sidetrack me....Watching a movie would....Playing football would (although in other countries they do this on the Sabbath). Today being Sabbath the house was quite....Once and a while I turn the news on to see what's up.... Sometimes I check the weather. As a practice I try to make the day different out of respect for what God did in Christ 2000 year ago....But I can't impose my lists on others (not that you are). We all do different things.... Some swim..some don't. Some put money in parking meters...some don't....I get gas if I need it in my car...some don't...and on and on and on... Rob Quote

Dr. Shane Posted December 25, 2005 Posted December 25, 2005 Some believe the issue was unclean meat that was being served. Others, including me, tend to believe it was meat that had been offered to an idol. Either way, Daniel refused to eat it and risked death for not doing so. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... melvin mccarty Posted December 25, 2005 Posted December 25, 2005 Amelia, perhaps we should ask WHY is it wrong to eat out on Sabbath. We seem to have no problem with the eating part or the preparing the food or the cleaning up after. If you buy a meal ticket at campmeeting it's all ok for the staff to work most of the day preparing food and washing dishes. We use the electricity which someone must provide to run our P.A.systems and lights at church. And so on and on. It is the lack of consistency and common sense that seems to be the problem. The experience of the young man which is being discussed here illustrates the point. Why was he taught that it was wrong for him to help out his employer under those particular circumstances? If everyone in your town were adventists what would you do about essential services? Let's not be making pharisaical rules. mel Quote
Dr. Shane Posted December 25, 2005 Posted December 25, 2005 Quote: If everyone in your town were adventists what would you do about essential services? For many years in Israel, everything was closed on Sabbath. Quote: Keeping the Israeli Sabbath is hard work, even if you aren't a tourist, particularly if you're unmoved by its pleasures. Hence the dislike of many secular Israelis for Saturday—the streets cleared of buses, the shuttered grocery stores, the understaffed hospitals—as well as for the black-hatted men in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods who stone Sabbath-breakers and who have in Israel's half-century of existence twice brought down governments for violating Sabbath laws. That has been changing in recent years. They are now looking to find a compromise between the religious and secular Jews. The View From Saturday Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Dr. Shane Posted December 25, 2005 Posted December 25, 2005 Some tend to think these are minor issues. Apparently Daniel thought it was worth dying for. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

Could it be that an individual already understands what God has revealed to them and seeks to help others to ss it to. There may have been something that you have understood/accepted/believed by conviction of the Holy Spirit 10 years ago and on this forum ou may wish to share it. I believe the Holy Spirit leads us to apply His truth to both our lives and the lives of others. The key question is how. We can do it by example, discussion, through prayer, preaching, teaching....there are many ways. Clearly, to seek to impose ones views in a coercive, arrogant way is wrong..eventhough forcefull verbal, dramatic declaration of the truth is a method that God has often employed. Quote: The focus of many of these posts appears to me to be to establish a fixed, rigig, locked in concrete, rule. Just because an individual has not established any exceptions, caveats etc in their posts it does not mean that they do not believe there are exceptions. I for one have stated my position but it is not my complete position. Instead of discussing how we discuss lets discuss. Folks discuss the way the want to as long as it is not offensive Quote: I also see in some of these posts a failure to recognize that the Holy Spirit leads perople individually. Where did that come from? How did you see that? Why did u make that assumtion? The Holy Spirit also leads us collectivly as well as indivdually. Many times God calls for a decision now, today but he is merciful, loving and kind. Quote: You ask why it is trivial to discuss "crazy" stuff. I think you misread my post! Quote: You ask how one can know if a question has any bearing on the person who asks. Who has told you that in this case the discussion has no personal application to the questioner? Are you making more assumptions? Just because it has not been claimed it does not mean it is not there! Quote: you tell us that such discussion are fun. Is Biblical debate intended to be fun, or is it intended to have a higher purpose? Why did you not also see that I said informative, and interesting. Its interesting that you did not refer to those other words. Why? This is what I actually said Quote: ....Thats part of the reason why folks post on the forum (if they are honest). Its interesting , fun, informative. You seem to be judging my motives. Perhaps, following your own counsel you should have questioned me about them privately if you are interested in the higher purposes of debate! Now this would get interesting if it were a CPE group session! Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. Einstein
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 26, 2005 Moderators Posted December 26, 2005 Lazarus, believe it or not, I really did not have you in mind as I made the posts. However, in reading your defense, I am thinking that perhaps I should have. <img src="/ubbtreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Please take that last statement as an attempt at humor. I really wasn't thinking of you. Quote Gregory
