What was the code name of the atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki on this day in 1945?

So LHC here's another chance at this!!

Answer: "Fat Man" was the codename for the atomic bomb that was detonated over the Japanese city of Nagasaki by the U.S on this day in 1945. It was the second of only two nuclear weapons ever used in warfare, the first being Little Boy. “Fat Man” was dropped from a specially adapted B-29 bomber, called “Bock’s Car,” named after its commander, Frederick Bock. The name Fat Man refers generically to the early design of the bomb, because it had a wide, round shape. The number of people killed is estimated at anywhere between 60,000 and 80,000.

Why a Second City, and Why Nagasaki?

The first atomic bombing, in Hiroshima, was intended to bring Japan to its knees and force a surrender. However, it didn't. Faced with continued warfare, the United States planned a second bombing for August 11, with the city of Kokura as the target. However, the weather forecast for the 11th was bad, and pilots had to use visual targeting for these bombs to ensure maximum damage. The bombing was moved to the 9th, and on that day, the B-29 bomber flew out to Kokura.

However, Kokura was obscured by smoke, and the pilots had to choose an alternative target. They chose Nagasaki, which was on the original list of potential targets but had been removed because its geography wasn't conducive to creating as much damage. Yet for some reason, the pilots chose Nagasaki. This time, the bombing was effective in getting the Japanese to surrender. It was also effective in getting U.S. President Harry Truman to decree that no more atomic bombs could be dropped without his specific approval.

What Was The Nickname of The B-29 Bomber Used to Drop The Fat Man Bomb on Nagasaki?

Bock's Car, or Bockscar, was the nickname of the B-29 bomber used to drop the Fat Man bomb on Nagasaki and was named after Frederick Bock who normally commanded the plane. Instead, Maj. Charles Sweeney piloted the flight. The pilot dropped the bomb from a height of 1,650 feet at 11:02 a.m. The plane was returned to the United States following the war, restored to its original markings and is displayed, along with a reproduction of the bomb, in Dayton, Ohio at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

How Long Was It Before Nagasaki Was Totally Livable Again?

Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki began to recover almost immediately. While the two were obviously devastated, the Japanese worked to get services running again for survivors very quickly. Rumors spread that Nagasaki wouldn't be livable again for several decades, but American scientists found, using Geiger counters, that a month after the Hiroshima blast, there was little radiation left. The same was likely the case for Nagasaki. Within a few months, the cities were well on their way to functioning a lot more normally, though it took about 6 months for housing in Nagasaki to begin to recover.

The ability of these two cities to recover so quickly likely lies in two facts. One is that both bombs exploded in the air and not while hitting the ground, so there was little surface contamination that could hang around. The other was that the materials used in these bombs had some very short half-lives, and the radiation quickly dispersed.

Which Victims and Survivors Are Often Overlooked?

The Japanese were, of course, the main victims and survivors, but both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not wholly occupied by Japanese. There were Koreans who had been forcibly shipped to Japan to work in factories, and several Allied POW camps were in those cities as well. 12 American POWs died in the Hiroshima bombing, and a number of Dutch and Australian POWs, plus one British POW, died in the Nagasaki bombing. However, several Allied prisoners survived the bombing despite their camp being very close to the explosion.

Answer: Sumo wrestling is the national sport in Japan. The sport originated in Japan, the only country where it is practiced professionally. Sumo wrestling is a competitive full-contact wrestling sport where a rikishi (wrestler) attempts to force another wrestler out of a circular ring (dohyo) or into touching the ground with anything other than the soles of his feet. Most sumo wrestlers are required to live in communal sumo training stables, known in Japanese as heya, where all aspects of their daily lives are dictated by strict tradition.

While Berkowitz is famous for his murders, he was also a prolific arsonist. Some peg the number of fires he set at 1,411, and the prosecuting lawyer said Berkowitz's lawyer told him it was over 2,000. How was he able to commit arson so many times without getting caught? Well, the police were preoccupied trying to catch the Son of Sam killer at the time. But Berkowitz's pyromania eventually caught up to him. He tried to set fire to the house of his neighbor, Craig Glassman. Glassman suspected Berkowitz for the crime and alerted the police, giving them some threatening letters Glassman had received from Berkowitz. These letters were part of what the police used when they finally arrested Berkowitz for the "Son of Sam" killings.

Who Gave David Berkowitz the Nickname "Son of Sam?"

The rule is you don't give yourself a nickname. And it usually holds true even for serial killers. But Berkowitz was the exception to the rule. The media had taken to calling him the ".44 Caliber Killer," a nickname that stuck until Berkowitz gave himself a better one. He liked to leave taunting letters for the police boasting of the crimes he committed, and, in them, he called himself the "Son of Sam."

The nickname, which soon proved far more popular than the old one, was a reference to Berkowitz's claim that he received orders to kill from a dog. However, contrary to what many believe, Sam was not the name of the dog. The dog's name was Harvey, Sam was his owner.

What Behavior Did the "Son of Sam" Laws Attempt to Prevent?

After Berkowitz was arrested, publishers lined up for the rights to Berkowitz's stories. Reports have him being offered as much as six figures for a book deal. Needless to say, the state of New York wasn't eager to see someone clear a hundred grand for a slew of murders he committed, nor to set the precedent that becoming a serial killer might actually be a good business deal. They passed the Son of Sam law, a law which many other states have since adopted their own version of, preventing a criminal from profiting off a crime he or she committed. In many states, any money a criminal might be paid in something like a book deal is now put into an account and distributed to the crime's victims.

What Event Has David Berkowitz Skipped Every Time It's Come Up Since the First One in 2002?

While Berkowitz was sentenced to life in prison, after 25 years, he became eligible for parole hearings. The hearings happen every two years, and Berkowitz has attended exactly zero of them. While in prison, Berkowitz has found religion, becoming a Jew for Jesus. "David told me that the reason he has never sought freedom from the parole board by attending parole hearings is because 'Jesus has already freed my heart, soul and mind and has forgiven me,'" explained Berkowitz's lawyer, Mark J. Heller. Having said that, it's pretty likely that even if he did get his hearing, Berkowitz wouldn't be released. The parole commissioners from his most recent hearing said that letting Berkowitz go, "would so deprecate the serious nature of the crime as to undermine respect for law." So whether it's his choice or someone else's, Berkowitz will almost certainly spend the rest of his life in prison for all that he's done. content?Action=tp&cid=26865

Answer: Yankee Stadium is a stadium located in the Concourse section of the Bronx, a borough of New York City. It serves as the home ballpark for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. The $2.3 billion stadium replaced the original Yankee Stadium in 2009. It is one block north of the original, on the 24-acre former site of Macombs Dam Park; the 8-acre site of the original stadium is now a public park called Heritage Field. The overall price tag makes the new Yankee Stadium the most expensive stadium ever built.

Which U.S. city is the game Monopoly based on?

Answer: Based on the real-life streets of Atlantic City, Monopoly is one of the world's most popular board games. Atlantic City became the inspiration for game inventor Charles Darrow’s “Monopoly” game because of his fondness for childhood vacations spent in the beachside city. The board game based on the real-life streets of Atlantic City, New Jersey has been played by an estimated 1 billion people in 114 countries. Monopoly was officially “born” on March 19, 1935, when Parker Brothers acquired the rights for the game from Charles Darrow.

Who Among the First Prisoners Escaped on His Way to Alcatraz?

John M. Stadig, a convicted counterfeiter, was an expert at escaping. After arrests in Boston, St. Louis, and Canada, he was once again arrested in Las Vegas, Nevada. Stadig did his time and was released on parole.  The next time Stadig attracted the attention of federal authorities was when he was once again arrested for counterfeiting in Chicago in 1933.

Eleven days later, he escaped, was arrested for counterfeiting again in San Francisco, tried, sentenced and sent to McNeil Island, Washington, to serve his sentence. A short time later, he escaped again but was caught in two days. This is when he earned the dubious honor of being sent to Alcatraz as one of its first prisoners. Stadig escaped again while en route by diving through the window of the train he was on and eluded capture for about a week. He didn’t escape from Alcatraz, however, and died there in 1936.

Who Were the Most Famous Inmates Incarcerated at Alcatraz?

The most famous was Al Capone, the Chicago gangster. After being blamed for the St. Valentine’s Day massacre in which seven people were killed but having no proof, the federal government went after Capone for tax evasion. He was convicted in June 1931 and sentenced to 11 years. After spending the first two years in an Atlanta prison, he was sent to Alcatraz. In 1939, he was released to a hospital for the mentally ill in Baltimore and died there in January 1947. Other famous inmates included George “Machine Gun” Kelly, Robert Stroud, nicknamed “The Birdman of Alcatraz” and James “Whitey” Bulger.

Were There Any Riots at Alcatraz?

In May 1946, a riot started that lasted three days. An inmate named Bernard Coy, serving 26 years for armed robbery, used a bar spreader that had been fashioned at the prison to spread the bars in the gun tower wide enough to get out. As two accomplices lured the guard out, Coy struck him over the head, incapacitating him. The convicts, along with others they had released, armed themselves. Marines and members of the U.S. Coast Guard were called in to help quell the ensuing three-day riot. The three prisoners who began the riot died, while two guards died and 14 were wounded.

When Was Alcatraz Prison Closed?

It was closed in 1963 because of the expense of operations. The cost of operating the prison at Alcatraz was three times the cost of any other federal prison. Because it was isolated from the mainland, food, fuel, water and other supplies had to be ferried over by boat. Robert Schibline, a bank robber, was the last to leave the island in March 1963. He had been incarcerated there since 1958.
