World War II began on this day in 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded which country?

Poland if I'm not mistaken!! Seems like everyone picks on the Polocks, and not just any, but Jews first!!

Answer: The start of World War II began on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. To Adolf Hitler, the conquest of Poland would bring Lebensraum, or “living space,” for the German people. Hitler claimed the massive invasion was a defensive action, but Britain and France were not convinced. On September 3, they declared war on Germany, initiating World War II. The Polish army was defeated within weeks of the invasion. After heavy shelling and bombing, Warsaw surrendered to the Germans on September 27, 1939.

Why Did Germany Invade Poland?

There are two answers to this question: the one Hitler offered in his speech in the Reichstag on September 1, 1939, and the real reason.

Hitler claimed the invasion of Poland was self-defense, citing an incident of Polish aggression from just the night prior, where a group of Polish soldiers infiltrated a German radio station and broadcast Anti-German messages across the airwaves. Hitler declared the act "unforgivable" and said it left him with no choice but to "meet force with force."

Here's the problem: the entire event was staged by Hitler and the Nazis. The alleged Polish soldiers were actually prisoners of the Dachau concentration camp who were dressed in Polish uniforms, shot dead, and planted at the scene as evidence of the "invasion." So in reality, the real reason Hitler invaded Poland was a German term called lebensraum - "living space" in English - which was an ideological principle used to justify German expansion before and during the war.

How Did the World Respond?

Hitler had hoped that Poland's allies - which included Britain and France - would bite at the self-defense justification and treat the German invasion much like they did the annexation of Austria: with relative indifference. Of course, that was not the case. Fresh off a new treaty that promised to support Poland in the case of an invasion, Britain gave Hitler until 11:00 pm on September 2, 1939, to withdraw. The deadline passed and within 15 minutes, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain declared war on Germany.

Australia, New Zealand, and India quickly followed suit, as did France the next day. World War II had officially begun.

How Long Did it Take Germany to Take Poland?

Not long. After just one week, German troops had already moved 140 miles from the border and were at the outskirts of Warsaw. Then, on September 17, the Soviet Union invaded from the east, putting to bed any hopes of survival. The Warsaw defense surrendered on September 28, the same day Germany and the U.S.S.R. signed an agreement outlining their respective territories (an agreement Germany would later betray).

What Were Hamburgers Called in the United States During World War II?

Hey, remember Freedom Fries? The name caught on with some and was a source of ridicule for others back in 2002, but the idea got its start decades earlier. There's nothing more American than a hamburger, which was a problem because back in World War II, Americans didn't want to go to the malt shop and order something with a name that sounded like it came from our enemies. So they called them "Liberty Steaks" instead.

Answer: Toys "R" Us, Inc. is headquartered at 1 Geoffrey Way in Wayne, New Jersey. Formerly known as Dr. G. Raffe, the company's mascot Geoffrey the Giraffe made his debut during 1957 in print advertisements for Children's Bargain Town. During 1969, when Children's Bargain Town became Toys "R" Us, Dr. G. Raffe was renamed Geoffrey and became the official Toys "R" Us "spokesanimal". Geoffrey the Giraffe has been a beloved member of the Toys“R”Us family ever since. Over the past 50 years, as the company evolved, so did Geoffrey. Although his appearance has changed over time, he remains an enduring and iconic symbol associated with the brand.

Answer: Since its founding, Dunkin' Donuts has grown to become one of the largest coffee and baked goods chains in the world, with more than 12,000 restaurants in 36 countries. In 2006, Dunkin' Donuts began using the slogan "America Runs on Dunkin'" which continues to be used in many advertisement campaigns. In 2017, Dunkin' Donuts announced that at several select retail locations, it would begin testing using the name of simply “Dunkin'.” The chain wants people to think of its stores as a destination for coffee, although it will still sell doughnuts.

What Were the Major Battles of the American Revolutionary War?

The war officially began on April 17, 1775, and British forces did not surrender until the Treaty of Paris, so it effectively lasted over eight years. A number of years of unrest and violence preceded the start of the war. Major battles were fought in New York at the Siege at Fort Ticonderoga, Battle of Brooklyn and at Saratoga. There were also three major battles fought in New Jersey at Trenton, Princeton, and Monmouth.

South Carolina saw three large battles at the Siege of Charleston, Battle of Camden and Battle of Cowpens. Massachusetts saw two major battles at Lexington and Concord at the start of the war and Bunker Hill later on. Other major battles were the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown in Pennsylvania, the capture of Savannah in Georgia and the final battle, the Battle of Yorktown in Virginia.

Why Did It Take so Long for the Treaty to Go Into Effect?

Although the British surrendered following the Battle of Yorktown in October 1781, minor skirmishes continued until King George signed the treaty almost two years later. There were several reasons for the delay. One was that the articles of peace had to be written. The territory that would comprise the United States had to be decided also. Because Spain had joined in the War of Independence along with France and the Colonialists, it was determined that Florida would be retained by Spain, so Spain controlled Florida and an enormous swath of land west of the Mississippi River.

Who Were Named as Negotiators for the Peace Treaty?

Five people were chosen from the United States to negotiate the treaty: Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, John Adams, who was the Colonies’ diplomat to France, Thomas Jefferson and Henry Laurens. Franklin, Adams, and Jay finalized the negotiations for the peace treaty. Jefferson did not leave for Paris in time to join the negotiations. Negotiators for the British were David Hartley, who was plenipotentiary for King George III, and Richard Oswald. Oswald had lived in America and had previously corresponded with Benjamin Franklin.

What New Territories Did the Treaty Open to the U.S.?

Among its several provisions, the Treaty of Paris established boundaries between the United States and British North America, which at that time included the territories that make up modern-day Canada and the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The treaty was extremely generous in opening up new territories to the United States, essentially doubling the size of the fledgling country. Britain ceded all lands west of the Allegheny Mountains and east of the Mississippi River to the United States, giving the new country plenty of room to grow. The treaty also gave American fishermen access to the fishing grounds of the Grand Banks off Newfoundland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Answer: Nine Ball is played with nine object balls numbered one through nine and a cue ball. On each shot the first ball the cue ball contacts must be the lowest-numbered ball on the table, but the balls need not be pocketed in order. The object balls are racked in a diamond shape, with the one ball at the top of the diamond and on the foot spot, the nine ball in the center of the diamond, and the other balls in random order, racked as tightly as possible. The game begins with cue ball in hand behind the head string.

7.25

Answer: The minimum wage rate is the lowest hourly pay that can be awarded to workers, also known as a pay floor. The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, and has not increased since July 2009. However, some states have a higher minimum wage rate. When the state minimum wage rate is higher than the federal rate, employers are required to pay workers the higher amount. At the current time, 29 states have minimum wages above the federal minimum wage ($7.25/hour), and five states have not set a state minimum wage.

When Did Labor Day Begin?

Linda Stinson, former historian at the U.S. Department of Labor, points to a labor-centric celebration held in New York City on September 5, 1882, as the first unofficial observation of a holiday dedicated to America's workers. The closing decades of the 19th century witnessed giant strides by the trade union movement in organizing workers to push for improved wages, fewer hours, and better working conditions. In New York City, many labor unions banded together in a coalition called the Central Labor Union. On May 14, 1882, members of the CLU called for a massive celebration of labor's achievements to be held in early September of that year. A committee of five was named to plan the event, which was held in a park on Manhattan's Upper West Side and included a parade and picnic, followed by fireworks.

What Workplace Abuses Gave Rise to the Labor Movement?

The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the late 18th century, reached its zenith in America in the late 1800s. To keep America's manufacturing operations running smoothly and without interruption, workers, many of them still children, were forced to work 12 hours a day, seven days a week. Working conditions were harsh and often unsafe. To strengthen their bargaining hand with employers, workers began to organize into trade unions in the belief that there was strength in numbers. Despite sometimes violent opposition, the labor movement grew rapidly during this period.

When Did Labor Day Become an Official U.S. Holiday?

Inspired by the successful celebration of labor's achievements in New York City, similar local and state celebrations were organized during the 1880s. In 1887 Oregon became the first state to declare Labor Day an official holiday on the state calendar. Other states quickly followed Oregon's lead. However, Congress resisted the push to make Labor Day an official federal holiday until its hand was forced by a tragic clash between railroad workers and the Pullman Palace Car Company in the late spring and early summer of 1894. After George Pullman summarily cut workers' pay and fired union representatives, Eugene Debs, leader of the American Railroad Union, called for a boycott of all Pullman railway cars. Labor's move crippled railroad operations nationwide, and President Grover Cleveland ordered troops sent into Chicago to break up the strike. In the ensuing violence, several workers were killed, forcefully bringing the plight of workers into the public spotlight. In this atmosphere of increased sympathy for workers, Congress later that year passed legislation designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day.

How Has Labor Day Changed over the Years?

Like a number of other holidays on the federal calendar, Labor Day has gradually morphed from a day set aside to honor America's working men and women to a day marking the unofficial end to summer. Ironically, the unofficial start to summer is usually observed on Memorial Day (last Monday in May), which was originally set aside to honor those who died while in the service of their country. Labor unions still stage celebrations on Labor Day, but for many Americans, the holiday's true significance has been lost.

Answer: Labor Day in the United States is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country. While individual states had been recognizing Labor Day for many years, it was not made a national holiday until President Grover Cleveland signed a bill on June 29, 1894 to designate the first Monday in September as Labor Day.

Answer: On September 6, 1901, William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, was shot on the grounds of the Pan-American Exposition at the Temple of Music in Buffalo, New York. McKinley was shaking hands with the public when Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist, shot him twice in the abdomen. McKinley died eight days later of an infection which had spread from that wound. He was the third American president to have been assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln in 1865 and James A. Garfield in 1881. Czolgosz was executed just over seven weeks later.

Answer: Leporiphobia, is an abnormal, debilitating, and often paralyzing fear of bunny rabbits. It is among the most common phobias in the Western hemisphere. People with leporiphobia will, by any means necessary, stay away from any area they believe to be inhabited bunnies. If they see a bunny they will refuse to enter the general vicinity until they overcome the severe panic attack that is always associated with it. Leporiphobia begins at a young age for most, and usually lasts until death. Tennis star Andy Roddick is rumored to have a fear of bunnies.
