During the 56-game hitting streak, bandleader Les Brown introduced a song, "Joltin' Joe DiMaggio," that became a popular radio and recording hit. Dalmatian Chihuahua Bull Terrier Great Dane The Bull Terrier is my thought! The others don't seem right!! Answer: Spuds Mackenzie, a white bull terrier with a black mark around her left eye, was introduced as the mascot for Anheuser-Busch during a 1987 Super Bowl ad. For the next 2 years, the "ultimate party animal," whose voiceover was provided by Robin Leach, lived the high life. Anheuser-Busch capitalized on Spuds' popularity by selling t-shirts and other merchandise. Shortly after Spuds' rise to fame it was learned that the dog, who was portrayed as male in the commercials, was actually female. Anheuser-Busch retired the dog in 1989 when it debuted the Bud Bowl. Fox News Channel was created by media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who hired former Republican Party media consultant and NBC executive Roger Ailes as its founding CEO. Fox News promotes itself under the slogan "Fair and Balanced." Fox News has been accused of biased reporting and promoting the Republican Party. Fox News Channel employees have responded that news reporting and political commentary operate independently, and have denied bias in news reporting. Rhode Island New Hampshire Connecticut Massachusetts Massachusetts! Absolutely!! Answer: Martha's Vineyard is an island located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts that is known for being an affluent summer colony. It includes the smaller Chappaquiddick Island which is usually connected to the Vineyard, though storms and hurricanes have been known to separate the two. It is the 58th largest island in the United States, with a land area of 100 square miles. It is also the largest island not connected to mainland by a bridge or tunnel on the East Coast of the United States. Martha's Vineyard is only accessible by boat and air. Members phkrause Posted October 10, 2017 Author Members Posted October 10, 2017 He Wasn't Expecting It Either: Barack Obama Wins The Nobel Peace Prize On October 9, 2009, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to U.S. President Barack Obama "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples". Try answering these trivia questions about the controversial decision... What Was the Reaction to His Win? What Did Obama Do With the Prize Money? What Did the Peace Prize Committee's Former Secretary Say About the Win Several Years Later? Which Other U.S. Presidents Have Won the Nobel Prize? Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members phkrause Posted October 10, 2017 Author Members Posted October 10, 2017 22 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was the Reaction to His Win? "Surprise" is often used to describe the worldwide reaction, and for good reason: It was a surprise. Even the White House was taken aback because no one had known of the nomination. Obama had been in office only 12 days when the nominations were due, so no one was even thinking about the award. It's true that Obama had been trying to restore the U.S.' global reputation after the long Iraq war, that he had been trying to address climate issues that faced both the nation and the world, and that he had been trying to find more peaceful solutions to issues such as Iran's nuclear ambitions. But given that he was so new on the world stage, even in October, people had trouble pointing to specific accomplishments that, in the popular eye, would equate with a Peace Prize. Many of Obama's supporters were baffled, and some even thought it was the wrong decision -- the surprise wasn't based on a political division such as conservative/liberal-- and there was outright anger from other quarters. One Afghan official, for example, was aghast at the award, claiming U.S. troops were still killing Afghan citizens daily. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did Obama Do With the Prize Money? Obama immediately said he wanted to donate the hefty $1.4 million award to charity, and he did, releasing a list in March 2010. Recipients included organizations offering scholarships to underserved groups like Hispanics and people in the Appalachian region; the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund for rebuilding after the massive Haiti earthquake in January 2010; groups helping veterans, girls' education, and high school students from non-traditional-college backgrounds; and the United Negro College Fund, among many others. Part of the money also went to the charity Three Cups of Tea, which was unfortunately the subject of a scandal that discredited the charity in 2011. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did the Peace Prize Committee's Former Secretary Say About the Win Several Years Later? In 2015, Geir Lundestad, the former committee secretary released a memoir that included a section on Obama's award. His opinion was that the award ended up being only partly appropriate. The memoir created a brief stir when some media outlets used the word "regret" instead, but Lundestad quickly fired back, claiming that the award didn't have the intended effect. The committee had hoped the prize would give Obama more clout and respect as he tried to work internationally, but it did not bring about the desired results. It added too much pressure, and it still did not prevent controversial moves later on, such as the drone program. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: Which Other U.S. Presidents Have Won the Nobel Prize? Other U.S. presidents have won the Peace Prize: Jimmy Carter won in 2002 for his dedication to peace processes and human rights; he almost won in 1978 for the Camp David Peace Accords. Woodrow Wilson won the prize in 1919 for his work on the League of Nations after World War I, and Theodore Roosevelt won in 1905 after he took the reins in ending the Russo-Japanese War. Interestingly, no U.S. president has won another type of Nobel, but Winston Churchill won the Nobel Literature Prize in 1953 for his extensive written works. A D E T E? Answer: A Snellen chart is an eye chart that can be used to measure visual acuity. Snellen charts are named after the Dutch ophthalmologist Herman Snellen who developed the chart in 1862. The normal Snellen chart is printed with eleven lines of block letters. The first line consists of one very large letter, typically the letter E. Subsequent rows have increasing numbers of letters that decrease in size. A person taking the test covers one eye from 6 metres or 20 feet away, and reads aloud the letters of each row, beginning at the top. Answer: There are nine justices currently serving on the Supreme Court of the United States. Of the nine current justices, three are women. Listed in order of seniority, they are: Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice Elena Kagan, and Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor. In its 220-year history, only four women justices have ever served on the Supreme Court. Three of those four women are currently sitting on the bench today. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing produces approximately 24.8 million notes a day with a face value of approximately $560 million. That doesn't mean there is $560 million more money circulating today than there was yesterday. This is due to the fact that 95% of the notes printed each year are used to replace notes already in circulation. Almost half of the notes printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing are $1 notes. How about 250?? Answer: The White House requires 570 gallons of paint to cover its outside surface. It had been practice from the mid-20th Century to repaint the White House every four years as part of the inaugural ceremonies. However, the progressive build-up of paint had made each successive layer less effective and more difficult to maintain. These days, the White House’s exterior is maintained with touch-ups as necessary. The last major painting of the White House’s exterior was in 1989, after the existing 40-odd layers of paint had been stripped away.
