Why Was King Selected for This Prestigious Award?

The selection of King as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate was based on his contributions to the field of human rights as the leader of the modern civil rights movement in America. Thanks in large part to King's tireless efforts, the U.S. Congress had passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 only a few months earlier. Gunnar Jahn, who served as chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee from 1941 until 1966, said of King: "He is the first person in the Western world to have shown us that a struggle can be waged without violence. He is the first to make the message of brotherly love a reality in the course of his struggle, and he has brought this message to all men, to all nations and races."

Who is the Youngest Person to Ever Receive the Nobel Peace Prize?

In 1964, Martin Luther King Jr. became the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, doing so at 35. If you are 35 and reading this, you may now feel terrible about how little you have accomplished to this point.

However, he is no longer the youngest ever. That honor goes to Malala Yousafzai. Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate.  In October 2014, at age 17, Malala Yousafzai became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.  After having suffered an attack on her life by Taliban gunmen in 2012, she has continued her struggle and become a leading advocate of girls' rights.

What Did King Do with the Prize Money He Received for Winning the Nobel Prize?

Upon receiving the roughly $54,000 prize for winning the Nobel Prize, King promptly turned around and donated that money to the Civil Rights movement. That's about $400,000 in today's money. Unfortunately for the prize recipients, somewhere along the way, the cash part of the prize became sort of like when you win the 50-50 raffle at a charity event, then everyone looks at you, just waiting for you to donate your winnings to the charity as well.

For example, Al Gore gave his winnings to the Alliance for Climate Protection, and President Obama gave away his to ten different organizations.

What Other Major Awards Did King Win?

King has also won a Congressional Gold Medal (no surprise), a Medal of Freedom (of course), and a Grammy (well sure - wait what?).   In 1971, Martin Luther King Jr. won for Best Spoken Word Album for "Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam," beating out fellow nominees: John F. Kennedy, Bill Cosby, and the astronauts from Apollo 11 among others. It's not just anybody who can beat out JFK, and the first guys on the moon, but if anyone was gonna do it, it would be MLK.

Answer: The Chicago World's Fair was held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World. The fair included carnival rides, among them the original Ferris Wheel, designed and constructed by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. This wheel was 264 feet high and had 36 cars, each of which could accommodate 40 people. The Ferris Wheel ran without any problems at the Fair and made $395,000, which helped keep the Fair from going in financial ruin.

Answer: Hershey, Pennsylvania, the home of the Hershey Chocolate Company, bills itself as "The Sweetest Place on Earth". Hershey's chocolates are made in Hershey, which was founded by candy magnate Milton S. Hershey. As the company grew and Hershey's wealth expanded, so did his vision for creating a model community in his home region. In the town that came to be known as Hershey, Pennsylvania, Hershey built schools, parks, churches, recreational facilities and housing for his employees. He even added a trolley system for his workers.

Answer: The Home Insurance Building, built in 1885 and located in Chicago, Illinois, is recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s first skyscraper. Designed by engineer William LeBaron Jenney, the building was supported by a revolutionary steel frame, which allowed for much greater height and stability without the greater weight of traditional masonry construction. The Home Insurance Building stood until 1931, when it was demolished to make way for another skyscraper, the Field Building (now known as the LaSalle Bank Building).

Answer: On this day in 1867, the U.S. formally took possession of Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, or less than two cents an acre. The Alaska purchase comprised 586,412 square miles, about twice the size of Texas, and was championed by William Henry Seward, the enthusiasticly expansionist secretary of state under President Andrew Johnson. At the time, critics thought Seward was crazy and called the deal "Seward's folly." The Senate ratified the treaty that approved the purchase by just one vote.

Answer: The Cosby Show is an American television sitcom starring Bill Cosby, which aired for eight seasons on NBC. The show focuses on the Huxtable family, an upper middle-class African-American family, living in a brownstone in Brooklyn Heights, New York, at 10 Stigwood Avenue. The Cosby Show spent five consecutive seasons as the number one rated show on television. According to TV Guide, the show "was TV's biggest hit in the 1980s, and almost single handedly revived the sitcom genre and NBC's ratings fortunes."

Answer: Butterfinger is a popular peanut-butter and chocolate candy bar. There have been 150 commercials for Butterfinger which featured The Simpsons beginning in 1988, when America's Most Wanted first aired. Many of the commercials featured Homer trying to get Bart's Butterfinger, but would be one-upped by Bart each time. Each commercial closes with Bart saying the catchphrase, "Nobody better lay a finger on my Butterfinger!" Most of these advertisements have been released on The Simpsons DVD sets as bonus features.

Answer: Ronald McDonald is a clown character used as the primary mascot of the McDonald's fast-food restaurant chain. Since his debut in 1963, the smiling clown has helped give McDonald's a huge advantage among kids. In Japan, Ronald McDonald is known as Donald McDonald. A local businessman who helped open the first McDonald's in the country decided that it would be easier to pronounce for the Japanese, according to "McDonald's: Behind the Arches." In China, out of respect for Ronald McDonald as an adult, children refer to him as Uncle McDonald.

What Caused the Plane Crash That Killed Band Members of Lynyrd Skynyrd?

Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Florida band made popular by their songs “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird” was traveling to Baton Rouge by air on a chartered plane for a scheduled appearance at Louisiana State University. When the plane started running out of fuel because of an engine problem, the pilot tried to make an emergency landing.

It crashed near Gillsburg, Mississippi, in a heavily treed area, killing Ronnie Van Zant, the lead singer, Steve Gaines and his sister, Cassie, Dean Kilpatrick, who was the assistant road manager, the pilot, and the co-pilot. Several of the other band members, the road manager and some of the road crew members were injured. The band did not reunite for 10 years when the five members of the band who survived the accident reformed the group.

Buddy Holly, who became famous in 1958 for his song “Peggy Sue,” died in a plane crash near Mason City, Iowa, on February 3, 1959. On a tour called Winter Dance Party, he, along with J.J. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, Ritchie Valens and their pilot, took off Clear Lake, Iowa, in bad weather. The plane crashed into a cornfield, ejecting all three of the entertainers and killing everyone on-board.

What Famous Big Band Leader’s Plane Disappeared While En Route to Paris, France?

The single-engine UC-64 Norseman carrying Glenn Miller, popular bandleader during the era of swing music, with hits such as “String of Pearls” and “In the Mood” disappeared while flying over the English Channel on December 15, 1944. His trip from the United Kingdom was to make arrangements to take the band there in the future to play for Allied troops. There were three persons onboard at the time of the plane’s disappearance: Miller, the pilot, Lt. Col. John Morgan, and Lt. Col. Norman Baessell, who was the flight officer. The plane was not officially reported missing until Christmas Eve, 1944.

Rumors about the disappearance of the plane and bandleader over the years included that weather problems had brought the plane down and that it had been hit accidentally by friendly fire. It was also suggested that Miller had been working as a spy on a plan to overthrow Hitler.

Which Singer Died While Flying His Plane Without A Valid License?

Singer and songwriter John Denver, whose '70 hits such as "Rocky Mountain High" and "Take Me Home, Country Roads" gained him worldwide fame, was killed when his small aircraft crashed into Monterey Bay near Pacific Grove, California.  It was revealed that Denver had taken to the air, despite not having a valid license and was not legally permitted to fly at the time of the accident.  His wings were clipped because of a denied medical clearance.  In previous years, Denver had a number of drunk driving arrests.  In 1996, nearly a year before the accident, the Federal Aviation Administration learned that Denver had failed to maintain sobriety by failing to refrain entirely from alcohol, and was compelled to revoke his medical certification.  The accident however was not influenced by alcohol use, as an autopsy found no sign of alcohol or other drugs in Denver's body.

What Former Television Star and Musician Died in a Plane Crash in 1985?

Ricky Nelson, who starred in “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” along with his mother, father, and brother, was also a skilled musician with 30 hit songs in the Top 40 between 1957 and 1962. The day after Christmas 1985, he and the members of his band took off in his leased Douglas DC-3 from Guntersville, Alabama, on a trip to Dallas, Texas for a concert planned for New Year’s Eve.

The plane made it as far as a field in De Kalb, Texas, where it crashed on December 31, 1985. A faulty heater on the plane was blamed for the smoke and fire that resulted in the crash. Nelson and his road manager and Nelson’s companion were killed as well as four band members.

Quiche is my guess!!

Answer: Real Men Don't Eat Quiche, is a bestselling book by Bruce Feirstein, satirizing stereotypes of masculinity, and published in 1982. The book's humor derives from the fears and confusion of contemporary 1980s men about how they ought to behave. Starting around 1982, the expression "Real me don't eat quiche," became popular, and indeed, many men started refusing to eat quiche. Quiche had been popular during the 1970's, but during the 1980's quiche consumption plummeted. The book was on the New York Times Best Seller list for 55 weeks.
