The character Spock, from the sci-fi series Star Trek, was from which fictional planet?

Answer: Spock is a fictional character in the Star Trek media franchise. Leonard Nimoy was best known for his portrayal of Spock, the half-human, half-Vulcan character he played on Star Trek. Vulcans are a fictional extraterrestrial humanoid species in the Star Trek franchise who originate from the planet Vulcan. Vulcans are widely known for their distinctive pointed ears and eyebrows, and their merciless logic. Among Spock's recognized and unique symbols that he incorporated into the series was the Vulcan salute, and the "Vulcan nerve pinch".

Answer: Chinese restaurant syndrome refers to a group of symptoms that some people experience after eating food from a Chinese restaurant. A food additive called monosodium glutamate (MSG) is often blamed for the symptoms some people experience. These symptoms often include a headache, skin flushing, and sweating. However, there’s minimal scientific evidence showing a link between MSG and these symptoms. Due to the controversy, many restaurants now advertise that they don’t add MSG to their foods.

A. Put it in rice

A common recommendation is to plunk that phone or pad into rice - but those little silica gel packets you may find in shoes, handbags and other goods are best at sucking out the excess moisture, experts say.

Answer: While some might expect flashy sports cars to be the most obvious targets for car thieves, data shows that mainstream models are the most often stolen rides on the road. Americans love buying the Honda Accord, and American thieves love stealing them, according to the latest report from the the National Insurance Crime Bureau. The Honda Accord was the most stolen automobile in the nation in 2016, based on data from the NICB’s annual Hot Wheels report. The Honda Accord was stolen 50,427 times in 2016, and model year 1997 fell victim 7,527 times

Which movie did Elvis Presley appear in first?

Answer: On this day in 1956, Love Me Tender, featuring Elvis Presley in his big-screen debut, premiered in New York City at the Paramount Theater. As Presley's movie debut, it was the only time in his acting career that he did not receive top billing. Love Me Tender was originally to be titled The Reno Brothers, but when advanced sales of Presley's "Love Me Tender" single passed one million, the film's title was changed to match. Presley would star in 31 movies (not counting another two concert documentaries). It would be the last time he didn't get top billing.

The Sound of Music is based on a real family called the Von Trapps, but man are there a bunch of liberties taken with their story. Among them, they weren't a family who did music as a side gig, they were a really successful band who made all their money performing. After achieving recognition in their own country, they were invited to New York to perform. When they reached America, after claiming they were leaving to visit Italy, they gained a strong following. They averaged a 100 U.S. concerts per year during World War II, bringing in $1,000 per show. They were Columbia's most successful choral group. And, oh yeah, they sang on an Elvis album.

The Musical Was the Last From What Famous Duo?

Rodgers and Hammerstein created some of the most memorable musicals of all time. Oklahoma! South Pacific. The King and I. And their final production was the The Sound of Music. Hammerstein passed away in 1960 from stomach cancer. Of course, by then, he had long left his mark on the world of musical theater. What would have been his 100th birthday was celebrated worldwide in 1995, and the following year three of his musicals were revived on Broadway simultaneously. They all won Tonys.

The real Maria Von Trapp, of course, inspired the original musical and was invited to see it performed. She then had a cameo in the movie itself. And then, when opening night came around... she never got an invite. Shocked, she went to the producers to address what was presumably an oversight. Said the producers, "there were no seats left." Hey, what can you do? Apparently The Sound of Music was so darn popular that even Maria Von Trapp herself couldn't get a ticket.

The producers of the movie considered both Doris Day or Grace Kelly to play the part of Maria. They were unsure about Julie Andrews and didn’t know if she would be a good draw for audiences. She had starred in Mary Poppins, but that movie hadn’t yet been released to the public. Doris Day refused the role, saying she was too American to play it.

Those who were considered to play Captain von Trapp were Sean Connery, Bing Crosby, and Richard Burton. However, the role went to Christopher Plummer. Major stars also auditioned for the parts of the children in the movie, including Mia Farrow, Patti Duke, Geraldine Chaplin and Sharon Tate, who all tried out for the role of von Trapp’s daughter, Leisl. The role was given to Charmian Carr. Other stars who tried out for roles as the children were Richard Dreyfuss and Kurt Russell.

Answer: On April 12, 1981, the space shuttle orbiter Columbia became the first shuttle to orbit the Earth. Space Shuttle Columbia returned to Earth on April 14, having orbited the Earth 37 times during its 54.5-hour mission. The shuttle program was officially referred to as the Space Transportation System (STS), so this flight was STS-1. The mission had a two-person crew: the commander, John Young, a veteran of Gemini and Apollo, and the pilot, Bob Crippen. The launch occurred on the 20th anniversary of the first-ever human spaceflight.

Why was the Watergate Scandal Starting to Pick up Steam in the Press?

Controversy surrounding Nixon and his involvement in the Watergate break-in — a 1972 scandal where five Nixon campaigners were caught trying to plant recording devices Democratic Headquarters at the Watergate complex — had reached new heights in November 1973 after Nixon famously fired the deputy attorney general, accepted the resignation of the attorney general, and abolished the office of the Watergate special prosecutor all in one night in late October.

Infamously dubbed the "Saturday Night Massacre," the event outraged the public and many in Congress. Members of both parties in the House of Representatives began seriously considering impeachment proceedings. In an attempt to quell public outrage and defend himself against allegations, Nixon made an appearance at an annual convention of the Associated Press where he pronounced his innocence and said, "I am not a crook."

When Nixon told us that he was not a crook, he did more than just lie. He lied at the absolute worst place possible to be dishonest. A place of innocence and happiness. That's right, he lied at Disney World. And you thought he was a monster before you read this paragraph.

Why Did Nixon Take Only One Plane to Orlando?

Standard protocol for presidential flights has a backup plane follow Air Force One. However, for Nixon's trip to Orlando, he elected not to bring the backup plane. When questioned at the conference as to why Nixon initially cited the environment and saving taxpayer dollars as his reason. But then, he made an odd quip that foretold his future fate. Nixon stated, "If this one goes down, they don’t have to impeach [me]." Of course, Nixon was not impeached but did later resign in the face of almost certain impeachment on August 8, 1974.

Was Nixon Ever Convicted of a Crime?

No. Nixon's vice president, Gerald Ford, assumed the oval office on August 9, 1974, and less than one month later, he issued a full presidential pardon for any crimes Nixon may have committed while in office. The pardon was highly controversial and likely one of the major factors that contributed to Jimmy Carter's defeat of Ford in his 1976 re-election bid.

Sauerkraut is made from what finely cut vegetable?

Answer: Sauerkraut is finely cut cabbage that has been fermented by various lactic acid bacteria. The cabbage is finely shredded, layered with salt, and left to ferment. It's especially appreciated in Germany, where its name comes from. The word "Kraut", derived from this food, is a derogatory term for the German people. During World War I, due to concerns the American public would reject a product with a German name, American sauerkraut makers relabeled their product as "Liberty cabbage" for the duration of the war.

Mickey Mouse is so popular, he could run for office some day. In fact, his name is used more often as a write-in candidate than anyone else's in local elections. Who's second on that list? Donald Duck of course. Mickey got so many votes that in 1987, Georgia actually made voting for Mickey illegal, and Wisconsin has considered similar legislation. Mickey Mouse and write-in votes are so synonymous, that one state Supreme Court judge even mentioned him when hearing a case about whether San Diego's ban on write-in votes was unconstitutional.

Justice Cruz Reynoso asked whether allowing write-in votes means we run the risk Mickey Mouse will be elected to office, saying, "He's said to have been born in the country--and I guess he's 35." Reynoso was playing devil's advocate more than anything else, but with Mickey's popularity, anything's possible.

During World War II, Walt Disney Made What Mickey-Mouse-Themed Item for Children in Case of an Attack?

During World War II, there was perhaps no bigger patriot than Mickey. His likeness was used to help sell war bonds and promote national security, and it's even rumored that his name was used as a password on D-Day. The mouse even riled up Hitler who declared, "Mickey Mouse is the most miserable ideal ever revealed...Healthy emotions tell every independent young man and every honorable youth that the dirty and filth-covered vermin, the greatest bacteria carrier in the animal kingdom, cannot be the ideal type of animal."

But perhaps Mickey's greatest contribution was helping prepare us for a problem that never ended up happening. During the war, the US government distributed over 40 million gas masks in case of a chemical attack, but the masks were too heavy and scary-looking for children.

So they commissioned a lighter, more kid-friendly model. That's right, Walt Disney helped design a Mickey Mouse gas mask that, had we had to use them, would have saved thousands of lives.

Wayne Allwine, the Voice of Mickey Mouse, Was married to Russi Taylor. What Was Taylor's Job?

Wayne Allwine voiced Mickey Mouse for more than 20 years, working a job that was originally handled by Walt himself. While working the gig, he met Russi Taylor, the voice of Minnie Mouse. The two fell in love and ultimately got hitched. The people behind Mickey and Minnie Mouse were happily married for 20 years before Allwine passed away in 2009.

What Two People Claim to Have Given Disney the Idea for Mickey's Name?

The story goes that Walt Disney was originally going to call his famous mouse Mortimer, when his wife Lillian told him that was too pompous and he should go with something more kid-friendly. But don't tell this story to Mickey Rooney. The actor said Walt Disney got the inspiration for the character's name when Walt met Rooney in 1920. We don't know who's right, but we can't blame either person for making the claim. After all, who wouldn't want some of the credit for Mickey Mouse?

Answer: New Orleans, Louisiana, is especially known for its strong association with jazz music, universally considered to be the birthplace of the genre. The term "jazz" did not become popular until the late 1910s, when New Orleans musicians first rose to prominence in other parts of the USA and the New Orleans style needed a new name to differentiate it from the nationally popular ragtime. Before then, the New Orleans style was frequently simply called "ragtime along with such local terms as "hot music" and "ratty music".
