Answer: Robert Edwin Peary is best known for claiming to be the first person to reach the geographic North Pole. An officer in the United States Navy, it was Commander Peary’s eighth attempt to reach the pole in two decades of exploring arctic regions. After losing a total of eight toes from years of Arctic conditions, Peary finally made peace with God by placing the American flag at the Earth's northernmost point. It is now suspected that he may have been 30 to 60 miles short of the Pole, but is still credited with the achievement.

Who Wrote the Speech for Lincoln?

Today, whenever a president gives a speech, you know that it has been written by a professional speechwriter - someone who actually studied the art of public speaking and knows the mechanics of delivering a great speech. But in 1863, things were done a little differently. It was, in fact, Abraham Lincoln himself who wrote the Gettysburg Address - every word of it. He finished the speech the night before he gave it and spoke from the heart. That's why it is still so powerful today.

Why Is This Speech So Famous?

Lincoln could have made the speech all about defeating the South and winning the war, but he did not. Instead, he geared the speech toward keeping the country together, working together, healing rifts, and honoring the democratic intent of the country's Founding Fathers. This was not a bitter speech, nor did it try to stir up anger or fear. It would have been very easy for Lincoln to go the emotional button-pressing route, but he took a more inclusionary path, reminding people that the war was not being fought to vanquish an enemy, but to hold together a country that was started with such promise.

What Was the Original Purpose of the Speech?

Lincoln's speech was really supposed to be a short address that was more of an afterthought than anything else. The ceremony's star guest was famed speaker Edward Everett, who spoke for two hours. Lincoln did plan out what he would say (the legend that he wrote it on the fly was just that, a legend), but his invitation was a last-minute decision, and he was supposed to be there more for moral support than anything else. Lincoln's intent in the speech was to remind people of how important this war was to the country and to try to keep morale up after such a devastating battle. Instead, the short speech gradually gained a reputation for being one of the most eloquent examples of patriotism and devotion to the ideals of democracy.

What Newspaper Retracted the Poor Review it originally gave the Gettysburg Address 150 Years Later?

At the time, newspapers made no bones about which side they supported. The Patriot-Union, a Pennsylvania newspaper, dismissed the president's remarks as "silly" and wrote, "For the credit of the nation, we are willing that the veil of oblivion shall be dropped over them and that there shall be no more repeated or thought of." At the 150 year anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, in 2013, the same newspaper, now known as the Patriot-News of Harrisburg, issued a retraction which read, "Seven score and ten years ago, the forefathers of this media institution brought forth to his audience a judgment so flawed, so tainted by hubris, so lacking in the perspective history would bring that it cannot remain unaddressed in our archives."

Answer: Many traditional shops have iconic symbols outside their doors. The traditional symbol for pawn shops is three gold balls suspended from a bar. The three sphere symbol is attributed to the Medici family of Florence, Italy. The symbolic meaning is said to be drawn from Lombard, which comes from the Italian province, Lombardy. Pawn shop banking is said to have originated under the name of Lombard banking. The golden spheres represented byzants, which were gold coins at the time. Later, the coins were changed to spheres to better attract attention.

That's right, that's eventual Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Of course, even when Ballmer achieved this lofty position, he was still a little prone to bringing giant energy-packed outbursts wherever he went. This is him at a presentation in the early 2000s, and you don't even wanna see how he acts now that he owns the Los Angeles Clippers.

Why Did Microsoft Include Solitaire in Windows 3.0?

If we're being honest, we use our Windows computers 30% of the time to do work and 70% of the time to play solitaire, hearts, FreeCell or Minesweeper. (But we don't play Spider Solitaire anymore. That game is the work of the devil.) But once upon a time, the games weren't included because they were fun, rather they were included to train us all on how to use a new operating system. Solitaire was meant to teach us how to use the drag-and-drop functionality of Windows. Minesweeper came out two years later to get people comfortable with right and left clicking. Hearts came out next to get us excited about the networking capabilities of our new computers and FreeCell was meant to test whether the software on your computer allowing you to play 32-bit games on a 16-bit processor had properly installed.

Windows 95 Came Out With a User Video Guide Starring Actors from What TV Show That Premiered the Previous Year?

Trying to get people excited for Windows 95, Microsoft released a "cybersitcom" explaining how you can use Windows. And if you had Bill Gates money, and could have anyone star in your sitcom-themed video in 1995, who would you hire? Simple. Rachel Green and Chandler Bing. Jennifer Anniston and Matthew Perry became the stars of a roughly hour-long training video/infomercial for Windows 95. Judging by the final product, we're guessing the writers from Friends were unavailable to work on this script.

How Much Did Microsoft Pay Brian Eno to Compose a Few Seconds of Music for Windows 95?

Do you remember this music that played every time you started Windows 95?

Okay, neither do we. But we're guessing it must have been pretty exciting in the 90s. Microsoft paid Brian Eno $35,000 to compose that diddy. Considering how short it is, we feel that's quite a rate. But considering that this is for one of the most famous pieces of software of all time, it feels like a steal.

Answer: The Mayflower was an English ship that famously transported the first English Puritans, known today as the Pilgrims, from Plymouth, England to the New World in 1620. The Mayflower carried 102 passengers, and was under the command of Captain Christopher Jones. He and his ship were veterans of the European cargo business, but neither had ever crossed the Atlantic. As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving Day here in the United States, we should also give thanks to Captain Christopher Jones who helped make the beginning of the United States possible.

Did Lee Harvey Oswald Act Alone?

According to the Warren Commission report — the official investigative report into Kennedy's assassination that was commissioned by President Johnson — the answer is "yes." However, many theories exist about whether Oswald truly acted alone or was part of a larger conspiracy to assassinate the president. Among the many conspiracy theories are collaborations between Oswald and the CIA, Russia, Cuba, the mafia, and even Kennedy's vice president, Lyndon B. Johnson. And while they are all just theories until proven otherwise, one thing is true: the majority of Americans believe others were involved. In fact, according to a recent survey from FiveThirtyEight, 61 percent of Americans believe Oswald did not act alone (only 33 percent believe he did).

Why Did Dallas Authorities Arrest Oswald?

Believe it or not, Oswald was not arrested for the assassination of JFK. Dallas authorities picked up Oswald 90 minutes after the assassination in a movie theater for the murder of Dallas police officer J.D. Tippit. The Warren Commission determined Oswald killed Tippit while escaping the Texas School Book Depository after firing the fatal rounds at President Kennedy's motorcade. Oswald, however, denied killing both Kennedy and Tippit. Of course, Jack Ruby's assassination of Oswald two days later ended the possibility of ever really knowing the truth about what happened.

Who Shot And Killed Lee Harvey Oswald?

Jack Ruby assassinated Lee Harvey Oswald on live national television two days after Kennedy's death while Dallas police attempted to transfer Oswald to a county jail. Ruby was a local Dallas nightclub owner who hadn't voted for Kennedy and, according to friends and close acquaintances, was not particularly patriotic. As such, Ruby's motive has always been questioned and added fuel to conspiracy theories surrounding mob involvement in Kennedy's assassination. Reports suggest Ruby had ties to mob leaders and may have carried out the attack to silence Oswald. Ruby, however, denied this even on his deathbed. In 1966, while suffering from lung cancer, Ruby maintained he operated alone under his own motive.

How Long Did it Take for Johnson to Take the Oath of Office?

At 2:38 pm — two hours, eight minutes after Kennedy was fatally struck in his motorcade — Johnson took the oath of office aboard Air Force One. Jacqueline Kennedy stood by his side, still wearing the pink suit stained with her recently deceased husband's blood. Shortly after, the casket carrying the remains of President Kennedy was brought aboard the plane to be brought back to Washington. Kennedy would later be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Answer: The U.S. government paid the heirs of Abraham Zapruder $16 million for his film of President John F. Kennedy's assassination, the highest price ever paid for a historical American artifact. The photography buff aimed his 8mm Bell & Howell at President Kennedy’s passing motorcade on Nov. 22, 1963, and captured 26.3 seconds of full-color footage that long outlived him. The film was an important part of the Warren Commission hearings and all subsequent investigations of the assassination, and is one of the most studied pieces of film in history.

Answer: According to estimates by the National Turkey Foundation, 46 million turkeys are consumed on Thanksgiving. In a country of 326 million Americans, that figure comes out to one turkey for roughly every group of seven. Nearly 88 percent of Americans surveyed by the National Turkey Federation eat turkey at Thanksgiving. The average weight of turkeys purchased for Thanksgiving is 16 pounds, meaning that approximately 736 million pounds of turkey were consumed in the United States during Thanksgiving last year. That's a lot of turkey!
