Isidor Straus, co-owner of Macy's department store, was killed in which famous disaster?

Answer: Isidor Straus co-owned Macy's department store with his brother, Nathan Straus. He died with his wife, Ida, in the sinking of the RMS Titanic. While the officer in charge of the lifeboat was willing to allow them a spot, Isidor Straus refused to go so long as there were women and children still remaining on the ship. His wife refused to go because he refused to go. Ida is reported to have said, "I will not be separated from my husband. As we have lived, so will we die, together." And they both went down with the Titanic.

For some reason I was thinking the "Hindenburg disaster!!" Oh well :stars:

Answer: As locals will tell you, “there’s more than meets the arch” to St. Louis. The city is commonly identified with the 630-foot tall Gateway Arch in Downtown St. Louis. Clad in stainless steel and built in the form of a weighted catenary arch, it is the world's tallest arch, the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere, and Missouri's tallest accessible building. Built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States, it has become an internationally recognized symbol of St. Louis, as well as a popular tourist destination.

Answer: Susan Ford, daughter of President Gerald Ford and First Lady Betty Ford, went to Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland. Unlike most schools in the country, their prom was not held in the gym or at a local convention center. No, Susan Ford held her senior prom, for the class of 1975, in the East Room of the White House. On May 31st, 1975, the East Room of the White House was filled with over 70 teenage girls and their dates. Before the prom, Susan entertained her friends on board the Sequioa – the presidential yacht – on the Potomac.

Answer: Former President George H.W. Bush became the longest-living president in U.S. history at 93 years and 166 days old on Saturday. George H.W. Bush, born on June 12, 1924, beat the previous record held by former President Gerald Ford, who died in 2006 at 93 years and 165 days old. Behind him is Ronald Reagan, who died in 2004 at 93 years and 120 days old. Jimmy Carter, the second-oldest living president who was born on Oct. 1, 1924, is a little more than 100 days behind Bush. George H.W. Bush was 64 years old when he entered office in 1989.

I believe that Jimmy Carter will eventually pass that!!

What Circumstances Led to Rosa Parks' Arrest?

Tired after a long day's work, 42-year-old Rosa Parks took a seat in the first row of the rear section of the bus, which was set aside for African-American passengers. However, under a city ordinance in Montgomery, Alabama, blacks were required to give up their seats in the rear if there were insufficient seating for whites in the whites-only front of the bus. When the white driver of the bus demanded that Parks stand so that a white passenger could be seated in her place, she flatly refused to do so. The bus driver called the local police, who arrested Parks for civil disobedience. In fact, the city's segregationist policies on municipal transport had long been a contentious issue among Montgomery's black citizens. The arrest of Mrs. Parks turned out to be the trigger for a citywide boycott of the municipal bus system by Montgomery's African Americans.

Who Spearheaded the Boycott Movement?

Upon her arrest, Parks called E.D. Nixon, a prominent black leader, who bailed her out of jail.  Learning of Parks’ arrest, the NAACP and other African American activists immediately called for a bus boycott to be held by black citizens on Monday, December 5.  As news of the boycott spread, African-American leaders across Montgomery began lending their support.  Black leaders met to form the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA). The group elected Martin Luther King Jr., the 26-year-old-pastor of Montgomery’s Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, as its president, and decided to continue the boycott until the city met its demands.  It was the beginning of King's key role as a leader of the modern civil rights movement.

What Was the Key to the Boycott's Success?

The boycott stretched on for more than a year, and participants carpooled or walked miles to work and school when no other means were possible. As African Americans previously constituted 70 percent of the Montgomery bus ridership, the municipal transit system suffered gravely during the boycott.  By refusing to ride the buses until they were guaranteed equitable treatment with white passengers, the city's black citizens put extreme financial pressure on the city-run transportation operation. On June 5, 1956, a Montgomery federal court ruled that any law requiring racially segregated seating on buses violated the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Montgomery’s buses were integrated on December 21, 1956, and the boycott ended. It had lasted 381 days.

What Happened to Parks Following the Boycott?

Parks not only lost her job but her husband also lost his. They moved from Montgomery to Detroit, Michigan. There, Parks became employed by Rep. John Conyers at his congressional office as a receptionist and secretary. Rosa Parks died on October 24, 2005. Three days later the U.S. Senate passed a resolution to honor Parks by allowing her body to lie in honor in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.

Answer: Frankenstein's monster is a fictional character who appeared in Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein. Although many mistakenly believe the monster’s name to be Frankenstein, he is actually never referred to by any name in the book. The scientist that created him was named Dr. Victor Frankenstein. Shelley describes the monster as 8-foot-tall, hideously ugly, but sensitive and emotional. When speaking with his creator, the monster refers to himself as “the Adam of your labours,” but the novel never attributes an actual name to him.

What Patient Received the First Human Heart Transplant?

Lewis Washkansky, a grocer from South Africa, 53, was the first recipient of a heart transplant in the world. A heart transplant had been successfully performed at Stanford University in Stanford, California, on a dog in 1958 but a transplant for a human had not been attempted. After receiving the transplant, Washkansky lived for 18 days. Because having the heart transplant meant Washkansky would have to take drugs to suppress the immune system in order to prevent his body from rejecting the heart, he developed double pneumonia, which caused his death. However, because Washkansky lived following the surgery, it was considered a success.

The surgery was scheduled for nine hours and included a 30-person team. It took place in Cape Town, South Africa, at the Groote Schuur Hospital. The team was led by Dr. Barnard; however, one of his brothers also assisted the surgical team. The surgery began around 12:00 a.m. and concluded just before 6:00 a.m. It was necessary to shock Washkansky’s heart to restart it, and when he regained consciousness he was able to speak. However, his condition deteriorated over the next few weeks.

Who Were Barnard’s Longest Surviving Heart Transplant Patients?

Dorothy Fischer was the fifth patient to receive a heart transplant on April 17, 1969. She was a 40-year-old who had suffered heart damage as a child from rheumatic fever. She lived for more than 12 years following the transplant, dying on October 19, 1981, of a stroke, following complications caused by the body’s rejection of the heart.

Dirk van Zyl, who received a transplant in 1971 at age 45, was his longest living patient. He lived for 23 years, dying at age 68 in Cape Town, South Africa. His death was caused by a stroke, not by heart failure. The heart he had received during the transplant was that of a man who was multi-racial who died when he fell out of a tree. Interestingly enough, because apartheid laws were in force at this time, the multi-racial man would not have been considered a candidate for a heart transplant.

Denton Cooley was working as a physician in Houston, Texas, at Baylor College of Medicine in 1968, where he performed the first heart transplant that was successful in the United States. The patient was an accountant, Everett Thomas, age 47. Thomas’ transplant was successful enough that he went home from the hospital and lived for about seven months.

Central Park in New York covers 843 acres. Such dimensions make the park larger than Vatican City and almost six times larger than Monaco. Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States, with 40 million visitors in 2013, and one of the most filmed locations in the world.

Answer: Algeria, officially the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, is a sovereign state in North Africa on the Mediterranean coast. With an area of 919,595 square miles, Algeria is the tenth-largest country in the world, and the largest in Africa. Its capital and most populous city is Algiers, located in the country's far north. Algeria extends southward deep into the heart of the Sahara, a forbidding desert where the Earth’s hottest surface temperatures have been recorded and which constitutes more than four-fifths of the country’s area.
