How about 666??

Answer: Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia is the fear of the number 666. This word is derived from Ancient Greek roots hexakósioi, "six hundred", hexékonta, "sixty", héx, "six", and phóbos, "fear"; literally meaning "fear of six hundred sixty-six". Severe sufferers may try to avoid the number at all times. For example, in 1989 Nancy and Ronald Reagan moved to a new home in the Bel-Air section of Los Angeles at 666 St. Cloud Road. They soon changed their address to 668 due to their fear of the former number.

When Was the 19th Amendment First Introduced to Congress?

Women's suffrage took a little while. The famous Women's rights convention at Seneca Falls, New York happened all the way back in 1848. And the 19th amendment wasn't first introduced in Congress until 1878, 41 years before it eventually passed.

By 1919, 15 states had already legalized women's suffrage. Which state was the first? That honor goes to Wyoming, who did it in 1890. They were also progressive enough to elect the country's first female governor: Nellie Tayloe Ross back in 1924. So the state was pretty justified when they settled on their official state nickname: The Equality State.

Who Was President When the 19th Amendment Passed?

The movement grew over time, eventually translating into larger and larger forms of civil disobedience. Hundreds of women were injured marching in protest of their still-voteless state on the eve of Woodrow Wilson's inauguration. But despite the mounting unrest, Wilson remained opposed to women's suffrage. But in 1918, seeing the role women had served in World War I, he changed his tune. His first attempt at a constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote fell two votes short in the Senate. But the following year it passed through the federal level with room to spare.

How Did Harry Burn's Mother Save Suffrage?

As any good Civics student knows, you don't just need federal approval for a constitutional amendment, you also need approval at the state level. And that was a bit tougher. The fate of the 19th Amendment would ultimately be decided by Tennessee. And to make the matter even more tense, the legislative body was split right down the middle on whether or not to legalize the women's right to vote. In fact, the entire amendment came down to the vote of exactly one man: That of Harry Burn, a self-proclaimed opponent of the 19th Amendment.  But the morning of the big vote, he got a letter from his mother. At the end of the note, she encouraged her son to "be a good boy and help Mrs. Catt put the 'rat' in ratification." Mrs. Catt would be suffragist icon Carrie Chapman Catt. We're not totally sure what it means to put the "rat" in ratification.

And as we all know, no boy wants to disappoint his mother. Harry Burn cast the deciding vote and the rest is history. He explained the next day, "I know that a mother's advice is always safest for her boy to follow, and my mother wanted me to vote for ratification."  Thank you, Mrs. Burn

Answer: In 1997, William Shatner became the spokesman for Priceline.com, agreeing to do the spots in exchange for stock in the company. The arrangement turned out to be quite profitable for Shatner, who has made approximately $600 million from Priceline.com. Shatner played “The Negotiator,” who uses his unusual-but-effective skills to negotiate the best travel deals for priceline.com customers. In commercials, Shatner's character dies however subsequent ads have featured his spirit still advertising Priceline.com from beyond the grave.

Trivia Questions about MLK's Historic "I Have a Dream" Speech

On Wednesday, August 28, 1963, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the most prominent leader of the modern civil rights movement, made an impassioned plea for equal treatment under the law in what has come to be known as his "I have a dream" speech. To celebrate the anniversary of that momentous occasion, we've put together a few trivia questions to test your knowledge on King's historic speech.

Who Was Behind the March on Washington?

Was the "Dream" a Part of King's Prepared Remarks?

How Was King's Speech Assessed by the FBI?

Who Was Behind the March on Washington?

Officially called the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the march \was one of the largest political rallies for human rights in America's history. Long a goal of civil rights activist A. Philip Randolph, founder of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the march was organized primarily by Randolph and Bayard Rustin. Although his contributions to the civil rights movement were significant, Rustin worked primarily behind the scenes because it was feared that his admitted homosexuality might reflect negatively on the movement.

Was the "Dream" a Part of King's Prepared Remarks?

As King worked on his speech in the days leading up to the March on Washington, he floated his idea for the "I have a dream" theme with some of his closest advisers, one of whom, Wyatt Walker, suggested he omit it because it was too trite. King's prepared text did not include mention of the "dream" theme, but in the moment of the speech's actual delivery, he was urged by famed gospel singer Mahalia Jackson to tell the assembled masses "about the dream." That ad-libbed portion of the speech is clearly the most powerful and most widely quoted segment of King's historic remarks.

How Was King's Speech Assessed by the FBI?

Although 1963 was well past the mid-1950s anti-communist hysteria whipped up by Senator Joseph McCarthy, the Cold War was still very much a fact of life, and many in the Kennedy administration worried about subtle communist influences on the American public. King first came to the FBI's attention because of his close association with Stanley Levison and another adviser, Jack O'Dell, both reported to have been members of the Communist Party USA. Members of the Kennedy administration had subtly counseled King to cut his ties to these men, but King smiled politely, indicating his willingness to do just that, but in the end declined to do so. Eventually, that refusal prompted approval of FBI wiretap surveillance of King's telephone communications. However, even before the October 1963 approval of wiretapping King's communications, the FBI was keeping a very close eye on the civil rights leader. Two days after the speech, William Sullivan, head of the FBI's domestic intelligence division, wrote a memo characterizing King "as the most dangerous Negro of the future in this nation from the standpoint of communism, the Negro, and national security."

How Many People Participated in the March on Washington?

Although estimates of the crowds that participated in the event range from 200,000 to 300,000, the majority of sources seem to agree that at least 250,000 marched on Washington that historic day. Of that number, an estimated 60,000 were white men and women who felt strongly that the time had come for action to guarantee African Americans equal rights under the law of the land.

How Powerful a Hurricane Was Katrina?

At its strongest, Katrina was a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 175 miles per hour. As of 2017, it ranks as the third most intense tropical cyclone to ever make landfall in the United States. The storm developed out of a tropical depression that formed near the Bahamas off South Florida's Atlantic coast. Shortly after it was declared a hurricane, Katrina crossed over the southern tip of Florida from the Atlantic to the Gulf. Weakened by its trip across Florida, Katrina was downgraded to a tropical storm as it entered the Gulf. But within hours the warm waters of the Gulf had strengthened Katrina into a powerful hurricane, attaining Category 5 status in short order. By the time Katrina once again made landfall at the southern tip of Louisiana, it had weakened to a Category 3 hurricane with maximum winds of 130 miles per hour.

What Was the Primary Cause of Devastation in New Orleans?

While Katrina was a powerful storm when it reached New Orleans, its top winds of 125 mph were far from the highest the region has experienced over the years. However, the levees built to protect the low-lying city failed at multiple points, unable to withstand the powerful storm surge caused by Katrina. These breaches in the city's flood control system allowed water to gush into city streets, covering nearly 80 percent of New Orleans in floodwaters. The vast majority of Katrina's damages and death toll in New Orleans was caused by flooding.

22 hours ago, phkrause said:

How Extensive Was Katrina's Damage?

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Katrina was "the single most catastrophic natural disaster in U.S. history," causing total damages estimated at $108 billion. Private insurers paid $41.1 billion on 1.7 million insurance claims for damages to businesses, homes, and vehicles in six states. However, 63 percent of that total is said to have gone to Louisiana claimants, and the vast majority of those were in the metro New Orleans area. Even more pertinent to the damages in New Orleans, the National Flood Insurance Program paid claims totaling $16.3 billion, $13 billion of which went to Louisiana claimants. A total of 134,000 housing units -- 70 percent of the occupied housing in New Orleans -- were damaged by Katrina.

22 hours ago, phkrause said:

What Was the Death Toll from Katrina?

According to data from FEMA, deaths directly or indirectly attributable to Hurricane Katrina totaled 1,833 in five states. More than 86 percent of these deaths occurred in Louisiana, which recorded 1,577 storm-related deaths. Second in terms of human deaths was Mississippi, which reported 238 deaths. Alabama and Georgia each had two deaths related to Katrina, while Florida recorded 14 storm-related deaths.

In Louisiana, 40 percent of the state's storm deaths were attributed to drowning, 25 percent to injuries and trauma, and 11 percent to heart conditions. Interestingly, nearly half the storm-related deaths in Louisiana occurred in people over the age of 74.

How Much Did Katrina Cut New Orleans' Population?

In the wake of the devastating storm, the population of New Orleans dropped more than 50 percent from 484,674 in April 2000 to 230,172 in July 2006. The Census Bureau reported that by 2014, the population of the Big Easy had climbed back to 384,320.

Answer: Laugh-In was a sketch comedy television program hosted by comedians Dan Rowan and Dick Martin. During the September 16, 1968, episode, Richard Nixon, running for president, appeared with a disbelieving vocal inflection, asking "Sock it to me?" An invitation was extended to Nixon's opponent, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, but he declined. According to the show's creator, "Humphrey later said that not doing it may have cost him the election", and "Nixon said the rest of his life that appearing on Laugh-In is what got him elected. And I believe that.”
