Which 1972 film featured the line "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse"?

The Godfather

Answer: The quote, "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse," is one of the most famous quotes in film history. Marlon Brando was the actor who said, “I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse” as the character Don Vito Corleone in the movie The Godfather, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. In the film, Vito tells his godson, Johnny Fontane, that he will get that role in Mr. Waltz's picture. How? By making him an offer he can't refuse. The line introduced a lot of bad Vito Corleone impersonations into the world, and instantly became part of our everyday banter.

How Was the Design for the Memorial Chosen?

In 1867, only two years after Lincoln's death, Congress passed a bill to create a commission to plan and erect a monument honoring the 16th president. Chosen by the commission to design the memorial was sculptor Clark Mills. He proposed a 70-foot structure featuring six equestrian and 31 pedestrian statues, all dominated by a 12-foot statue of Lincoln. Unfortunately, efforts to raise sufficient funds for the project were unsuccessful, and the commission was eventually disbanded. With it died the proposed design of Clark Mills.

Then, early in the 20th century, Senator Shelby M. Cullom of Illinois led an effort to restart the campaign for a memorial to Lincoln. In the first decade of the 1900s, six bills were introduced calling for the establishment of another commission to undertake the memorial project. Although the first five bills failed, the sixth, introduced on December 13, 1910, passed, and the new Lincoln Memorial Commission met for the first time a year later. Not long thereafter, commission members approved a design proposed by architect Henry Bacon, which is essentially the monument as it looks today. Although Bacon was a successful architect with many monuments, public buildings, and statuary bases to his credit, his most famous -- and final -- project was the Lincoln Memorial.

Was There Any Controversy about the Proposed Design?

Not everyone was happy with the Lincoln Memorial Commission's plan for the monument, many arguing that the grandeur of Henry Bacon's Greek temple design was out of step with the humble man it was designed to honor. Some of the people in this camp suggested a simple log cabin shrine might be a more fitting memorial to Lincoln. Others quibbled with the commission's decision to locate the monument on land that had recently been reclaimed in West Potomac Park. Some said the land was too swampy, while others argued the site itself was not easily accessible.

What Is the Significance of the Memorial's 36 Columns?

The peristyle or open colonnade that graces the exterior of the Lincoln Memorial is made up of 36 columns, one for each state of the Union at the time of Lincoln's death in April 1865. At the time of the memorial's 1922 dedication, the Union had grown to 48 states, all of which are listed on one of the memorial's walls. Alaska and Hawaii, both of which joined the Union in 1959, are represented on a plaque that is also displayed on the same wall.

Each of the 36 fluted Doric columns in the memorial's peristyle has a base diameter of 7.5 feet and a height of 44 feet. The columns are made of limestone that was quarried in Indiana. The exterior of the memorial building itself is made of Yule marble, found only in the Yule Creek Valley of Colorado.

Were Any Lincoln Family Members Present at the Dedication Ceremony?

Robert Todd Lincoln, the firstborn of Abraham Lincoln's four sons and the only family member to survive into the 20th century, was a guest of honor at the dedication of the memorial to his father. Although the 78-year-old Lincoln made no remarks at the ceremony, he received an ovation from spectators as he took his seat.

Answer: It is one of the most famous landmarks in England. The famous tower clock known as Big Ben began ticking for the first time on this day in 1859. Big Ben was the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, but often extended to refer to the clock, the tower, and the bell. Big Ben’s tower was renamed “Elizabeth Tower” in 2012 in honor of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, her 60th anniversary on the throne. The tower has become one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom.

Robin Williams

Answer: In the Oscar-winning 1982 film Tootsie, Dustin Hoffman portrayed Michael Dorsey, a struggling actor so determined to prove his worth as an artist that he disguises himself as a woman named Dorothy Michaels in order to win a part on the soap opera Southwest General, where he quickly becomes a fan favorite character while falling for his co-star, Julie Nichols (Jessica Lange). The film was a major critical and financial success and was nominated for ten Academy Awards including Best Picture; Lange was the only winner, for Best Supporting Actress.

GROVER  CLEVELAND

Answer: Grover Cleveland became the first and only U.S. President to be married at the White House on this day in 1886. His new wife was a beautiful young woman 27 years his junior named Frances Folsom. At age 21, Frances became the youngest first lady in U.S. history. When she was 11, Frances’ father died and Cleveland became her legal guardian, remaining close friends with her mother. Although Cleveland was not the first president to marry while in office, he is the only one who had the ceremony in the White House.

CHICAGO

Answer: The city of Chicago is widely recognized as the "Windy City". The origins of Chicago’s famous nickname are not entirely clear. The most obvious explanation is that it comes from the frigid breezes that blow off Lake Michigan and sweep through the city’s streets. Interestingly, although Chicago may have gotten its nickname in part because of its fierce winds, it’s not the breeziest town in the United States. However, another popular theory holds that it was coined in reference to Chicago’s bloviating residents and politicians, who were deemed to be “full of hot air.”

NEW JERSEY

Answer: Have you ever wondered which state has the highest percentage of grown kids still living with their parents? The answer is New Jersey. Census data indicates that nearly 47% of New Jersey’s 18-to-34-year-olds are living in their parents’ home. While the Garden State has the highest proportion of so-called boomerang kids, they are not alone. More than 40% of Connecticut and New York millennials are living with their parents as well. Nationally, just over a third of adults under 35 are living in their parents’ home. North Dakota has the lowest percentage of grown kids living with their parents.

A whole lot of...nothing. If you've ever seen the movie Alien, then you probably remember the tagline: "In space, no one can hear you scream." And for the most part, that's true. Sound waves need a medium to travel through—like Earth's atmosphere—in order to be heard. Because Space lacks an atmosphere of its own, the universe is silent. Astronauts can communicate with each other because radio waves do not require the same atmospheric medium to move about.

How Many Stars Are in the Observable Universe?

Astronomers have no way of knowing for sure how many stars are out there. To put it in perspective, it would take over 6,000 years just to count the stars in our galaxy, so any figure stating the number of stars in the universe is a guess...at best. Notice that the question also asks about the "observable" universe. Because The Big Bang happened about 13.7 billion years old, we can only see stars within 13.7 billion light-years from us. Who knows how many are out there in the yet-to-be-explored universe! With all that in mind, the best estimates for stars in our observable universe hover around 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. Basically, the calculation goes like this: The Milky Way has about 100 billion stars, and there are about 10 billion galaxies in the observable universe. Assume most galaxies have about the same number of stars and you arrive at that figure.

How Long Will the Astronauts' Footprints Last on the Moon?

When you step in some mud, that footprint probably washes away within a few days. But on the moon, there's no atmosphere—and therefore no wind or rain—to erode the footprints left by the 12 astronauts who have walked on the moon. They won't be there forever, though. The moon is constantly coming in contact with heavenly bodies like "micrometeorites" that will slowly, over about 100 million years, erase the history of NASA's moon exploration.

When Will the Sun Burn Out?

Next year! Just kidding...you've got plenty of time—5 billion years, in fact—before the sun turns into a red giant and engulfs our planet. So far, the star that powers our solar system has burned about half of its hydrogen reserves, which is impressive considering the star converts about 600 million tons of hydrogen into energy per second. But beware: living creatures will likely need to high-tail it off the planet long before we get eaten up by the sun. Within the next billion years, the sun will grow so large it will boil our oceans and make Earth uninhabitable.

Answer: Baikal is the world's deepest lake. Also known as the "blue eye of Siberia", Lake Baikal is located in Southern Siberia, between Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and the Buryat Republic to the southeast. Famous for being the deepest lake in the world with a maximum depth of 5,369 feet, it holds a volume of water larger than that of all the great lakes combined. It is considered among the world's clearest lakes and is considered the world's oldest lake.. Geologists estimate that Lake Baikal formed somewhere 20-25 million years ago, during the Mesozoic.
