CHARLES LINDBERGH

Answer: On April 15, 1926, legendary aviator Charles Lindbergh flew the first American Airlines flight – carrying U.S. mail from St. Louis, Missouri, to Chicago, Illinois. Nearly a year later, Lindbergh would make history by setting out on a 33.5-hour journey, becoming the first person ever to fly a solo transcontinental nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Lindbergh emerged from the virtual obscurity of a U.S. Air Mail pilot to instantaneous worldwide fame as the result of his historic transatlantic flight in his single engine, single-seat, monoplane named the "Spirit of St. Louis".

Did Earlier Speed Limits Exist in the Country?

As early as 1652, there were speed limits for non-motorized vehicles in New Amsterdam (which eventually became the State of New York). The speed limits were set for wagons, sleighs and carts and restricted the horses from going as fast as a gallop when pulling these vehicles. Since a horse can move from 25 mph to 30 mph while in a full gallop, this probably made a lot of sense. The fine for violating the speed limit in New Amsterdam was hefty, at the equivalent of $150 today. That would be reason enough to slow down.

When Was the National Speed Limit Restricted to 55 Miles Per Hour?

The bill was signed into law in 1974 by President Richard Nixon. Before it went into effect, individual states set their own speed limits, which ranged from 40 mph up to 80 mph. An embargo of oil shipments to different countries, including the United States, was the reason for the national speed limit, which aimed to reduce America’s need for foreign oil.

What State Now Has the Highest Speed Limit?

That would be Texas with one stretch of road between Austin and San Antonio that has a posted 85 mph speed limit. Texas not only has the highest speed limit but is at the top in the average speed driven at 78 mph. There are other states with posted speed limits of 80 mph, including Nevada, South Dakota and Montana.

What Countries Have Areas With No Speed Limit?

The Autobahn in Germany does have speed limits of 81 mph in some areas, particularly near cities, however, some parts of the Autobahn have no posted speed limits. What some people may not realize is that the Autobahn isn’t just one road, it is the name for the system of highways in Germany. The Northern Territory in Australia has no posted speed limits either.

What Future U.S. President Was Arrested for Speeding?

That president was General Ulysses S. Grant, and he was arrested or fined more than once for speeding a few years before he became president. The first time was on April 11, 1866, when he was stopped by a police officer for driving his horse and carriage too fast. The officer arrested him and took him to the police station after warning Grant about his speeding the day before. Grant paid the fine and promised to keep his speed down in the future.

Answer: Clara Barton was a pioneering nurse who founded the American Red Cross on this day in 1881. Barton worked with the sick and the wounded during the American Civil War and became known as the “Angel of the Battlefield” for her tireless dedication. While visiting Europe, she worked with a relief organization known as the International Red Cross, and lobbied for an American branch. When the American Red Cross was founded in 1881, Barton served as its first president. Barton headed the organization into her 80s and died in 1912.

LEMONADE

Answer: Lucy Hayes was an American first lady and the wife of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president of the United States. She was the first first lady to have graduated from college, receiving her degree from Wesleyan Female College. Her decision to ban alcohol from White House events earned her the nickname “Lemonade Lucy” from her critics, but she was a popular first lady, and her public support and dedication to a variety of causes, including adequate funding for mental health care and education, set a standard for political activity among first ladies.

OHIO

Answer: Ohio's flag is the only non-rectangular U.S. state flag. The Ohio state flag has a unique swallowtail design which is more correctly called a burgee rather than a "flag" or "banner." It is a rare example of a non-quadrilateral civil flag, another well-known example being the flag of Nepal. According to vexillologist Whitney Smith, it may be loosely based upon cavalry flags of the Civil War and Spanish–American War. Its shape, lack of text, and mirror symmetry allow it to be flown or hung in various orientations without affecting legibility.

WHITE CASTLE

Answer: The first White Castle location opened in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas making it the first American fast-food burger chain. White Castle is also generally credited as the first fast food chain in the United States. Founder Bill Ingram used $700 to open the starting location and started serving the chain's signature burgers. The chain is known for its small, square hamburgers, sometimes referred to as "sliders". The burgers were initially priced at five cents until 1929 and remained at ten cents until 1949. On January 14, 2014, Time labeled the White Castle slider the most influential burger of all time.

ps:They had one right across the street from Roosevelt High and also across from the High School was Fordham University, where the NY Giants used to have there practice's and preseason camps!!

APOLLO 13

Answer: After returning Apollo 13 to the video store six weeks late and incurring a $40 late fee, Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings was inspired to create his own movie rental-by-mail company. Hastings was embarrassed about the fee, and thought there had to be a better way to do movie rentals. Netflix's initial business model included DVD sales and rental by mail but expanded its business with the introduction of streaming media. Hastings is often quoted saying that his decision to start Netflix stems from that $40 late fee he incurred from Blockbuster Video.

ps:So in reality it wasn't the movie itself that inspired the founding of Netflix!!! It was the $40 late fee!!!

THE EAST RIVER

Answer: Today marks the anniversary of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge which opened to traffic on May 24, 1883. The bridge connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, spanning the East River. Thousands of New York residents turned out to witness the dedication ceremony, which was presided over by President Chester A. Arthur and New York Governor Grover Cleveland. It has a main span of 1,595 feet and was the first steel-wire suspension bridge constructed. It was originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge and the East River Bridge, but it was formally named the Brooklyn Bridge in 1915.

The Empire is Striking Back With These Trivia Questions

On May 25, 1977, the words "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." lit up movie screens around the world for the first time. Today marks the 41st anniversary of the debut of Star Wars, and to celebrate, we've put together four intergalactic trivia questions for you. May The Force be with you...

Which Famous Actors Auditioned for the Role of Han Solo?

Harrison Ford wasn't always a shoe-in for the role of Han Solo. Ford worked with George Lucas on his most recent blockbuster success, American Graffiti, but wasn't initially being considered for the role of Solo. He was, however, invited to read lines with some of the famous auditioning actors, including Burt Reynolds, Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, and Robert Englund (who later played Freddy Krueger). Ford eventually landed the position and actually improvised one of the most famous lines from the film. When Leia (played by Carrie Fisher) tells Han she loves him for the first time, Solo responds, "I know." That remark was completely off the cuff and Lucas loved it so much he kept it in.

Which of The Film's Stars Called the First Star Wars "Fairy-Tale Rubbish"?

Despite the success of the film and its iconic place in film history, not everyone involved was particularly proud of their work. Alec Guinness—who played Obi-Wan "Uncle Ben" Kenobi—in the film, actually referred to it as "fairy-tale rubbish" and initially refused to return for The Empire Strikes Back. After much begging and pleading, Guinness agreed to reprise his role, but with possibly the sweetest deal in movie history: he would only work for one day, from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm and would earn a quarter of a percent of the film's gross earnings in return. His little 4.5-hour shift netted him millions as a result.

What Snowy Country Served as the Setting "Hoth" at the Start of The Empire Strikes Back?

That would be Norway. The second film in the Star Wars saga had a critical battle scene between Imperial forces and the Rebels which took place on a snowy planet called Hoth. The scenes were shot largely on location at Hardangerjøkulen glacier in Norway. During the shoot, the glacier saw the worst storm in over 50 years, causing the crew to improvise shots out of their hotel doorways and windows while shut-in from the whiteouts. Other shooting locations included Tunisia, Death Valley, and Croatia.

How Did Lucas Shoot the Famous Opening Scrawl?

The opening sequences of the Star Wars films are as iconic as Darth Vader's voice and George Lucas had to do a lot of work (and make a lot of sacrifices) to have them included. Lucas quit the Writer's Guild and paid a hefty fine to avoid including credits at the start of the film. To this day, he still has not returned to the Guild. Shooting the scrawl was also tough work: a crew laid out yellow letters across a black background and a camera operator had to manually drag the camera across the text. The whole process took over three hours (when today it would probably take two minutes).
