What classic rock song’s first line urges you to “get your motor runnin, head out on the highway”?

BORN TO BE WILD

Answer: "Born to Be Wild" is a song first performed by the band Steppenwolf, and is one of the most iconic rock songs of its era. The song is often invoked in both popular and counter culture to denote a biker appearance or attitude. It is sometimes described as the first heavy metal song, and the second verse lyric "heavy metal thunder" marks the first use of this term in rock music. The legend of “Born To Be Wild” was enhanced enormously in 1969, when it was chosen for the soundtrack of the counter-culture film classic Easy Rider, starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. It’s been in dozens of movies since, and went on to be inducted into both the Grammy and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

When Did the 19th Amendment Become the Law of the Land?

Although both houses of Congress voted in 1919 to approve the 19th amendment, it would not become law until it was ratified by legislatures in at least two-thirds of the 48 states that were then part of the Union. On August 18, 1920, almost 14 months after Congress approved the amendment, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the proposed addition to the U.S. Constitution, giving it the two-thirds majority necessary to become law.

What States Allowed Women to Vote Before the 19th Amendment?

The women's suffrage movement found a much more receptive audience west of the Mississippi where several states gave women the vote even before Congress passed the 19th Amendment. Wyoming was first to give women the vote in 1890 and was followed that same decade by Colorado in 1893 and Idaho and Utah in 1896. For the next 14 years, nothing much happened on the women's suffrage front at the state level. But in 1910 Washington State gave its female citizens the vote and was quickly followed by California in 1911; Arizona, Kansas, and Oregon in 1912; and Montana and Nevada in 1914. Back east, New York approved women's voting rights in 1917. The next year, Michigan, Oklahoma, and South Dakota followed suit.

When Did the Women's Suffrage Movement Begin?

Although women began arguing for their right to vote in the early 1800s, it wasn't until the middle of the 19th century that the movement became well organized and a force to be reckoned with. In 1848 Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott held a convention to increase public awareness of the issue and to demand voting rights for women. This convention is often cited as the start of the organized movement for women's suffrage. Four years after the convention, activist Susan B. Anthony joined the movement and devoted the remainder of her life to the fight to win the vote for women.

Women nowadays take the vote fairly seriously when you look at numbers (political rivalries and insults aside, of course). Women voters outnumber male voters regularly, and while both male and female eligible voters don't have full turnouts (the percentages in presidential elections tend to be in the upper 50s to upper 60s percentage-wise), the gap between male eligible voters who actually cast a ballot and female eligible voters who actually cast a ballot has been growing.

OSKAR SCHINDER

Answer: What do Mahatma Gandhi, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Josef Stalin all have in common? They have all been—once or several times—Nobel Peace Prize nominees. That is right, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini were all nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Adolf Hitler, was recommended to the Nobel committee in 1939, just three short months before he led Germany to invade Poland and start World War II. Former Soviet Union leader, Josef Stalin, was nominated twice: in 1945 and 1948. Benito Mussolini was nominated for the 1935 Nobel Peace Prize, the same year the Italian Fascist Dictator invaded Ethiopia.

 D-DAY

Answer: On the morning of June 6, 1944, Allied forces staged an enormous assault on German positions on the beaches of Normandy, France during World War II. The invasion is often known by the famous nickname "D-Day," yet few people know the origin of the term or what, if anything, the "D" stands for. According to the U.S. military, "D-Day" was an Army designation used to indicate the start date for specific field operations. In this case, the "D" in D-Day doesn’t actually stand for anything—it’s merely an alliterative placeholder used to designate a particular day on the calendar.

NINTEEN  EIGHTY- FOUR

Answer: On this day in 1949, George Orwell’s novel of a dystopian future, Nineteen Eighty-four, was published. The novel opens with the following first line: “It was a bright day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.” The reference to a thirteenth stroke of the clock subtly alerts the reader that statements of truth in this fictional society should be called into question. The novel’s all-seeing leader, known as “Big Brother,” becomes a universal symbol for intrusive government surveillance and oppressive bureaucracy.

ARMAGEDDON

Answer: The Torino Scale is a tool for categorizing potential Earth impact events such as asteroids and comets. An integer scale ranging from 0 to 10, it is intended as a communication tool by the asteroid impact hazard monitoring community. The scale captures the likelihood and consequences of a potential impact event. Armageddon is a 1998 science fiction disaster film that follows a misfit team of deep-core drillers sent by NASA to stop a gigantic asteroid on a collision course with Earth. It stars Bruce Willis and an ensemble cast comprising, Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton, and Liv Tyler.

ADIDAS and PUMA

Answer: Two of the world's most renowned shoe companies were birthed from a bout of bad blood between siblings. In the 1920s, brothers Adolf and Rudolf Dassler were partners in the Dassler Brothers Sports Shoe Company, operating out of their mother’s laundry room in the German town of Herzogenaurach. In 1949, following a breakdown in the relationship between the brothers, Adolf created Adidas, and Rudolf established Puma. Puma and Adidas entered into a fierce and bitter business rivalry after the split. It's said that the brothers never spoke again.

Answer: Of all the notable celebrities who have died in plane crashes, Will Rogers may have the most unique legacy. An Oklahoma City airport is named for him, where millions of passengers each year board their flights at an airport named for the victim of a fatal plane crash. The comedian and legendary cowboy Will Rogers, was an Oklahoma native who died in an airplane crash near Barrow, Alaska in 1935. He was just 55 years old. Will Rogers World Airport is the busiest passenger airport in the state of Oklahoma.
