The Stephen King thriller "Cujo" features a killer canine of which dog breed?

A St. Bernard

ST. BERNARD

Answer: Cujo is a 1983 horror film based on Stephen King's 1981 novel of the same name. It revolves around a rabid St. Bernard dog, who traps a mother and her child inside their car without food or water during a heat wave, and their attempts to survive. Despite receiving mixed reviews and being a modest success during its theatrical release, the film has gathered a major cult following in the years since its release. A total of five Saint Bernard’s were used during the filming of the movie in addition to a mechanical dog, and an actor in a dog costume.

 DIME

Answer: The front (obverse) of the dime pictures a left-facing profile of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the only four-term President of the United States of America. The reverse boasts an olive branch, a torch, and an oak branch, from left to right respectively. According to the U.S. Mint, the torch is a symbol of liberty, the olive branch is a symbol of peace, and the oak branch is a symbol of strength and independence. The Roosevelt dime has been minted since 1946, when it replaced the Liberty Head dime. As of 2014, the dime coin cost 3.91 cents to produce.

Answer: The fizz that bubbles up when you crack open a can of soda is carbon dioxide gas (CO2). Soft drink manufacturers add this tingling froth by forcing carbon dioxide and water into your soda at high pressures—up to 1,200 pounds per square inch. When the pressure is reduced, the carbon dioxide is released from the solution as small bubbles, which causes the solution to become effervescent, or fizzy.

MARY HAD A LITTLE LAMB

Answer: On this day in 1877, Thomas A. Edison unveiled his invention of the phonograph, a way to record and play back sound. Edison stumbled on one of his greatest inventions–the phonograph–while working on a way to record telephone communication at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. His work led him to experiment with a stylus on a tinfoil cylinder, which, to his surprise, played back the words he had recorded, “Mary had a little lamb”. Public demonstrations of the phonograph made the inventor world famous, and he was dubbed the “Wizard of Menlo Park.”

HAIRDRESSER

Answer: Very few people are born famous, which means that even celebrities were once regular people who had to pay the bills with normal jobs. In the late 1960s when he was still a struggling actor in New York, the future Rocky star took a job cleaning lion cages at the Central Park Zoo for a reported $1.12 an hour. Ironically, it all came full circle when he performed the voice of Joe the Lion in the 2011 comedy Zookeeper. On this day in 1976, the film Rocky, made its debut and would ultimately make Sylvester Stallone one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

FELIXTHE CAT

Answer: Felix the Cat was a star of the silent film era and had a comic strip in newspapers around the nation when he made his Thanksgiving Day Parade debut in 1927, the first year the event featured cartoon character balloons. Without a plan to deflate this massive balloon, NYC parade organizers simply let Felix fly off into the sky. Unfortunately, the Felix the Cat balloon got caught in some telephone wires and caught fire. In 2016, after a nearly 90 year hiatus, Felix made a triumphant return to the parade. Mickey Mouse did not join the parade until 1934. Snoopy and Uncle Sam also came along in later years.

In 1953, someone at Swanson made a mistake. He over-ordered turkey for the Thanksgiving holiday by 260 tons, which sounds like roughly how much our Uncle Frank eats in a standard year. But this was enough to leave Swanson with ten refrigerated trains worth of the bird that they couldn't sell. So along came a salesman named Gerry Thomas with an idea. He ordered 5,000 aluminum trays, hired an assembly line of women, and got everyone cranking on creating the world's first TV dinner: turkey, peas and sweet potatoes all for 98 cents. Swanson was skeptical about how the new product would do, but it turned out okay. In 1954, their first full year of production, they sold 10 million units.

Which President Pardoned the First Turkey?

As is the case with many Presidential pardons, this issue is a bit controversial. There are stories linking both Lincoln and Truman to the first pardon of a turkey, though both are unverified, and the Truman one has been disputed by the Truman Presidential Library. And, you'd think if anyone would be in favor of good press for Truman, it would be the library set up in his honor.

Others have credited JFK who, somehow, in a way that only JFK can, got credit for pardoning a turkey that he actually just sent back to the farm so it could put on a few more pounds before being eaten. Reagan joked about pardoning a turkey during Iran-Contra, but the long, proud history of pardoning a turkey started officially in... 1989 with George H.W. Bush. The tradition has continued every year since. Last year's pardoned turkeys were named Caramel and Popcorn. They were sent to live on an estate in Mount Vernon after the pardon. Which, frankly, sounds a lot like what you would tell a kid happened to the turkeys if they actually died.

Which U.S. President made Thanksgiving a National Holiday?

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, declared Thanksgiving a National Holiday in 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. While Lincoln issued the proclamation, credit for making Thanksgiving a national holiday should also go to Sarah Josepha Hale...

Who Was Sarah Josepha Hale?

Sarah Josepha Hale was a woman truly dedicated to the cause of there being a Thanksgiving holiday. So dedicated in fact that she spent 17 years campaigning for it and wrote letters to five different presidents.  Sometimes referred to as the “Godmother of Thanksgiving,” Hale wrote countless articles and letters to persuade President Abraham Lincoln to officially declare Thanksgiving a national holiday that recurred every year.  Hale mentioned in her letter that having such a national day of Thanksgiving would establish a "Great Union Festival of America."  What's another Sarah Josepha Hale claim to fame? She was the author of the nursery rhyme, "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

FORK

Answer: According to what traditionally is known as "The First Thanksgiving," the 1621 feast between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag at Plymouth Colony contained waterfowl, venison, ham, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, and squash. There is no definitive proof they ate turkey, and sweet potatoes were not yet grown in North America. The pilgrims didn't use forks; they ate with spoons, knives, and their fingers. Governor Winthrop of Massachusetts introduced the fork 10 years later, but it did not really catch on until the 18th century.

Bernie Sanders

Answer: Larry David and Bernie Sanders learned on PBS' genealogy series "Finding Your Roots" that the two are distant cousins. The revelation shocked both individuals, with Bernie Sanders asking the host of the show if he was kidding. The connection is even more astounding given that Larry David has played Bernie Sanders on Saturday Night Live numerous times, and Sanders at one point changed his Twitter picture to a photo of Larry David. Both are Brooklyn-born, bald-headed men in their seventies with Jewish ancestry and distinctive voices.
