How *human* was Jesus?

Unlike ourselves, lost in our selfish pursuits, Jesus was consumed with his mission to save people from eternal death.

He had memories from his former life as a non-human. As a human, he learned to access the Holy Spirit which enabled him to know other's thoughts. Too much was at stake to succumb to mere human sexual desires. Every woman he looked at he loved. Every man he looked at he loved. He saw all humans as potential members of his Kingdom of the Stars.

To most of us, sexuality is so important, a primary motivator, something we're frequently conscious, or unconscious, of. To Jesus, I believe, it was nothing. He was able to suppress it, as we, too, can. There will be no sexuality in his Kingdom. There will be something far better.

Jesus was indeed 100% human. What made him so different from us was his unhindered access to the Holy Spirit, something we're too polluted to achieve. But it's not impossible, I believe.

Perhaps his spirit prevented him from harming himself, perhaps not.

If we went to another world to try to save its inhabitants from self-destruction, would we rise above the weaknessess of our humanity and become something far better by sacrificing our very lives in order to save others?

Pam--your question reminds me of a Rich Mullins song, "Boy like me/Man like you" in which he asks questions such as,

Did you grow up hungry?

Did you grow up fast?

Did the little girls giggle when you walked past?

Did you wonder what it was that made them laugh?

Did you wrestle with a dog and lick his nose?

Did you play beneath the spray of a water hose?

Did you ever make angels in the winter snow?

Did you ever get scared playing hide and seek?

Did you try not to cry when you scraped your knee?

Did you ever skip a rock across a quiet creek?

Did they tell you stories 'bout the saints of old

Stories about their faith

They say stories like that make a boy grow bold

Stories like that make a man walk straight

Those are not all the lyrics of the song, but I like it because it does focus on the humanness of Jesus as a child. Another couple of Mullins' songs that deal with Jesus as an adult are "Surely God is with Us" and "You Did not Have a Home." In fact, depending on the style of music you like, you should check out Rich's "Jesus Album." All of the music focuses on Jesus' life and ministry and humanity and divinity and is really quite powerful.

When Christ became a man in the incarnation He had to give up not His divinity, but His divine prerogatives, in other words, the independent use of His divinity. Even His God-consciousness had to be given up. Jesus discovered He was God only by revelation. He was not God-conscious as a baby. He had to grow up in knowledge. He had to grow up in everything because He had given up the independent use of His divinity and was made in all things like unto us (Heb. 2:17).

Therefore, He was totally God-dependent all through His earthly ministry. John 5:30 says, “I can do nothing of myself.” John 6:57 says, “I live by the Father.” See also John 8:28 and John 14:10. All these texts state very clearly that Christ was totally God-dependent.

What helps me to stay with Jesus by faith is two-fold:

1] I see a God who loves me more than Himself....His ambition is to live for me. Amazing!

2] The more I realize how sinful I am the more I need His righteousness in place of my unrighteousness. This doesn't mean that I am not growing in grace....
