On Sunday, it said it would allow a “basic” amount of aid into Gaza to prevent a “hunger crisis” from developing.   Under the Trump administration, the United States — Israel’s top ally — has mostly avoided criticizing Israel’s steps in its war against Hamas, but it has increasingly highlighted the crisis in Gaza. President Donald Trump, on his recent trip to the Middle East, voiced concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, as did his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, who said on a visit to Turkey that he was “troubled” by it.   The decision to let in aid comes as Israel steps up its offensive in the Gaza Strip in what it says is a bid to pressure Hamas to agree to a ceasefire deal on Israel’s terms. Under the newly launched air and ground offensive, Israel plans to displace hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and secure aid distribution inside the territory. Netanyahu said Monday that the plan would include “taking control of all of Gaza” and a military spokesperson ordered the evacuation of Gaza’s second-largest city, Khan Younis.

Canada, France and the United Kingdom are threatening to take “concrete actions” — including targeted sanctions — if Israel doesn’t stop its renewed military offensive in Gaza and continues to block humanitarian aid from entering the enclave. Since Israel launched the offensive in northern and southern Gaza over the weekend, more than 400 people have been killed and over 1,000 others injured, according to a CNN count of this week’s Palestinian Ministry of Health data. Amid this increased pressure from allies, Israel announced it would allow five trucks into Gaza. UN aid chief Tom Fletcher described the delivery as a “drop in the ocean of what is urgently needed.”   Israel The United Kingdom followed through on its threat to take “concrete actions” if Israel doesn’t stop its military offensive in Gaza and continues to block humanitarian aid from entering the enclave. On Tuesday, the UK paused trade negotiations with Israel and sanctioned West Bank settlers. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said that while the UK backed Israel’s right to defend itself after the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, the conflict in Gaza was “entering a dark new phase.” With the European Union’s foreign policy chief describing the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic,” the EU also announced plans to review its relationship with Israel. According to the UN, on top of the military offensive, Israel’s monthslong blockade of aid has left one in five people in Gaza facing starvation.

View in browser When Hamas stormed across the Gaza border on October 7, 2023, it knew exactly what it was doing. The group had detailed maps of nearby Israeli military bases and forces, and quickly overran them. But the terrorist group did not stop there. Instead, Hamas advanced into civilian communities, butchering and burning whole families, shooting children in front of their parents, and parents in front of their children. Gunmen executed a grandmother in her home and uploaded the video to her Facebook page for friends and family to see. After discovering a music festival in the vicinity, the group diverted its paragliding fighters to massacre and kidnap the attendees. “I killed 10 Jews with my own hands,” one Hamas member ecstatically told his parents over the phone. As it turned out, the Israeli military was not the primary target of Hamas. It was just in the way of the real target: any and all Jewish people in the land of Israel. The terrorist group’s anti-Zionism turned out to be a flimsy cover for its anti-Semitism. Last night, another assailant used the Palestinian struggle as a pretext to harm Jews. In Washington, D.C., a man named Elias Rodriguez allegedly shot and killed two people as they were exiting an event at the Capital Jewish Museum. There is much we still don’t know about this terrible tragedy, but we do know that Rodriguez has been charged with first-degree murder and other crimes (he has not entered a plea), and that witnesses say he confessed to the crime, declaring, “I did it for Gaza.” The victims of this atrocity happened to be staff members at the Israeli embassy. But the gathering they attended was not an Israeli-embassy event, and it was not held in the Israeli embassy: It was a gathering of Jews at a Jewish institution. Rodriguez went to an American Jewish Committee event for young professionals and allegedly executed two people leaving the venue. “Police believe the shooter targeted the event but had not singled out any individual before arriving,” The Washington Post reported. It seems to have been mere happenstance that left the Israeli-embassy staffers dead and not someone else. One of the victims, Sarah Milgrim, was actually American. The other victim, Yaron Lischinsky, was born to a Jewish father and a Christian mother, and the family lived for a time in Nuremberg, Germany, a place with a dark legacy of anti-Semitism, before returning to Israel when Yaron was 16. Like Hamas, the perpetrator wrapped his anti-Semitic animus in the disguise of the Palestinian struggle, reportedly pulling out a keffiyeh and shouting, “Free Palestine!” But his depraved actions, like theirs, expose the lie of his lofty words. Neither Palestine nor Israel will ever truly be free until their societies are liberated from megalomaniacal men who perpetrate demonic acts in their name. The event that Rodriguez targeted reportedly featured speakers discussing “humanitarian diplomacy” for crises “throughout the Middle East and North Africa.” Despite his protestations to the contrary, Rodriguez did nothing last night for Palestinians. His alleged decision to murder guests at an AJC event suggests that what he wanted was simply to hurt Jews. Like other forms of bigotry, the problem of anti-Jewish prejudice will not be resolved by its targets. Anti-Semitism will not be expunged by the 0.2 percent of the world that is Jewish, but by the 99.8 percent that is not. The FBI and Metropolitan Police Department are investigating the shooting as a potential hate crime. But the larger question today is: Will our society provide excuses and justifications that fuel further anti-Jewish violence, or will it choose to stand against those who use such pretexts to brutalize Jews the way they’ve been brutalized for centuries? Many of Israel's closest international allies have broken publicly with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government for its relentless pummeling of Gaza and freezing of desperately needed humanitarian aid, Axios' Barak Ravid reports. Why it matters: Netanyahu had unprecedented international legitimacy to fight back against Hamas after the Oct. 7 attacks. But a gradual decline in support as the war dragged on has now turned into a diplomatic tsunami. ? The big picture: Outside of the U.S., many of Netanyahu's remaining friends in the West have turned away over the last two months after Israel terminated a ceasefire in March and blocked all deliveries of food, water and medicine to Gaza. President Trump and his top aides have signaled to Netanyahu that he should wind down the war and allow in aid, though Trump has mostly kept his concerns private. Several other leaders have gone public. What they're saying: "We will not stand by while the Netanyahu Government pursues these egregious actions. If Israel does not cease the renewed military offensive and lift its restrictions on humanitarian aid, we will take further concrete actions in response," French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a joint statement on May 19. Netanyahu responded with fury, accusing the three in a video statement of doing Hamas' bidding. ⚡ State of play: Israel's isolation is moving beyond mere rhetoric. The U.K. on Thursday announced it was suspending trade negotiations with Israel and imposed new sanctions against Israeli settlers involved in violent attacks against Palestinians. France is expected to co-host a conference with Saudi Arabia next month to push for a two-state solution, and is expected to formally recognize a Palestinian state. Spain already recognized a Palestinian state last year, along with Norway and Ireland, and Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez labeled Israel a "genocidal state" last week. 17 of 27 EU foreign ministers backed a motion on Tuesday brought by the Netherlands, another key Israeli ally, to reconsider the bloc's trade and cooperation pact with Israel. ? What to watch: While Trump seems to have cooled on his own plan to expel all 2 million Palestinians from Gaza to build a new "riviera," Netanyahu said last week that the war won't end until that plan is implemented. How is the new Gaza aid plan supposed to work – and why are so many aid groups against it? Why this matters: The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation is the linchpin of a new aid system that would wrest distribution away from aid groups led by the U.N., which have carried out a massive operation moving food, medicine, fuel, tents and other supplies across Gaza since the war began in October 2023. GHF said it moved trucks of food to its hubs on Monday and began distribution, without giving details on how much aid was distributed.   Jake Wood, the American heading the effort, said Sunday night he was resigning because it was clear the organization would not be allowed to operate independently. GHF said in a statement it is independent and apolitical and will not be part of any mass displacement. It said its system is fully consistent with humanitarian principles including impartiality and independence.   Israel has demanded an alternative plan because it accuses Hamas of siphoning off aid. The United Nations and aid groups deny there is significant diversion. They reject the new mechanism, saying it allows Israel to use food as a weapon, violates humanitarian principles and won’t be effective.

It’s been 600 days since Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing more than 1,200 people and kidnapping 250 others. Since then, the militant group has released some of the hostages, but continued to fire rockets at Israel. Israel has responded by negotiating for the release of hostages, bombing much of Gaza and killing more than 53,000 people. In recent months, Israel has also halted access to humanitarian aid, which has pushed the enclave’s population of more than 2 million Palestinians towards famine. Although access to aid resumed this week, chaos broke out at a distribution site in southern Gaza on Tuesday as thousands of desperate Palestinians arrived to receive food from a controversial new US and Israel-backed aid distribution program. Israel has accepted a new ceasefire proposal with Hamas from US envoy Steve Witkoff, which includes the release of 10 living hostages and 18 deceased hostages, as well as a 60-day truce. Although Hamas said the latest framework doesn’t “respond to any of our people’s demands, foremost among which is stopping the war and famine,” the militant group offered three counterpoints:  1) Hamas will agree to the release of the hostages and a 60-day ceasefire if the US can assure that negotiations over a permanent ceasefire will continue and the fighting will not resume after the 60 days.  2) Humanitarian assistance will be carried out through the UN channels. 3) The Israel Defense Forces will agree to pull back to the positions that they held on March 2, before Israel re-launched its military operations. Amid these negotiations, Israel approved a massive expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. Peace Now, an Israeli non-governmental organization that tracks settlements, said it was the largest expansion since the signing of the Oslo Accords more than 30 years ago.

Gaza officials say Israeli forces killed 27 heading to aid site. Israel says it fired near suspects Palestinian health officials and witnesses say Israeli forces fired on people as they headed toward an aid distribution site on Tuesday, killing at least 27, in the third such incident in three days. Why this matters: The near-daily shootings have come after an Israeli and U.S.-backed foundation established aid distribution points inside Israeli military zones, a system it says is designed to circumvent Hamas. The United Nations has rejected the new system, saying it doesn’t address Gaza’s mounting hunger crisis and allows Israel to use aid as a weapon.   The Israeli military said it was looking into reports of casualties on Tuesday. It previously said it fired warning shots at suspects who approached its forces early Sunday and Monday, when health officials and witnesses said 34 people were killed. Israel has 'activated' some Palestinian clans opposed to Hamas, Netanyahu says The Israeli prime minister’s comments on social media were the first public acknowledgment of Israel’s backing of armed Palestinian groups within Gaza, based around powerful clans or extended families. Such clans often wield some control in corners of the territory, and some have had clashes or tensions with Hamas in the past. Read more.

Key points: Palestinians and aid workers have accused clans of carrying out criminal attacks and stealing aid from trucks. Several clans have issued public statements rejecting cooperation with the Israelis or denouncing looting.   An Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that one group that Netanyahu was referring to was the so-called Popular Forces, led by Yasser Abu Shabab, a local clan leader in Gaza’s southernmost city, Rafah. A bus carrying more than two dozen workers from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a controversial US and Israeli-backed aid initiative, was attacked late Wednesday. “We are still gathering facts, but what we know is devastating: there are at least five fatalities, multiple injuries, and fear that some of our team members may have been taken hostage,” the GHF said in a statement. The aid group accused Hamas of carrying out the assault; the militant group has not yet responded to the allegations. The GHF was established amid Israeli accusations that Hamas is stealing aid in Gaza and profiting off its sale but the organization has been controversial from the get-go and criticized by multiple international aid agencies.
