Members phkrause Posted July 1, 2025 Author Members Posted July 1, 2025 Israel-Gaza Monday was another deadly day in Gaza. At least 41 people were killed and 75 others injured when an Israeli airstrike hit a seaside cafe in Gaza City. The Al-Baqa cafe was a popular spot for students, journalists and remote workers to hang out because it offered views of the Mediterranean coast and internet access. Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, the director of Al-Shifa hospital, said most of the casualties were women and children. Journalists on the scene said freelance journalist Ismail Abu Hatab was also among the dead. The Israel Defense Forces told CNN that the incident was “under review.” Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Read more. What to know: Trump said Tuesday that Israel had agreed on terms for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza and urged Hamas to accept the deal before conditions worsen. But Hamas’ response, which emphasized its demand that the war end, raised questions about whether the latest offer could materialize into an actual pause in fighting. Hamas has said that it’s willing to free the remaining 50 hostages, less than half of whom are said to be alive, in exchange for a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and an end to the war. Israel says it will only agree to end the war if Hamas surrenders, disarms and exiles itself, something the group refuses to do. Read more. Why this matters: United Torah Judaism’s two factions said they were leaving the government over disagreements surrounding a bill that would codify broad military draft exemptions for their constituents, many of whom study Jewish texts instead of enlisting to the military. The issue has long divided Jewish Israelis, most of whom are required to enlist. The departure of a party that has long served as a kingmaker in Israeli politics doesn’t immediately threaten Netanyahu’s rule. But once it comes into effect within 48 hours, it will leave the Israeli leader with a slim majority in a government that could now more heavily rely on the whims of two far-right parties. Those parties oppose concessions in ceasefire negotiations with Hamas and have themselves quit or threatened to quit the government over moves to end or even pause the war in Gaza. Members phkrause Posted July 23, 2025 Author Members Posted July 23, 2025 Gaza The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has only worsened since Israel launched its blockade of aid last March, leaving millions of Palestinians facing starvation. Now, a coalition of international organizations says the blockade is also endangering the lives of doctors and aid workers. In a joint statement, more than 100 humanitarian groups called on Israel to restore the full flow of food, clean water and medical supplies to Gaza and agree to a ceasefire. The coalition warned that supplies were “totally depleted” and that their organizations were “witnessing their own colleagues and partners waste away before their eyes.” International news agency, Agence France-Presse (AFP), also announced plans to try and evacuate its remaining freelance staff from Gaza because they are starving and too weak to work. “Without immediate intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die,” AFP’s main journalist union said in a statement. War in Gaza tests ties between Israel and traditional European allies Outrage over Israel’s actions in Gaza has grown in Europe as images of suffering Palestinians have driven protests in London, Berlin, Brussels and other capitals. More recently, the almost daily killings of Palestinians while seeking aid have tested the EU’s friendly relationship with Israel like never before. But Europe remains divided on its stance toward Israel, and its limited sanctions and condemnations so far have had little effect. Read more. What to know: Britain threatened Tuesday to take further action against Israel if it does not agree to end the war in Gaza, a day after two dozen mostly European countries condemned Israel’s restrictions on aid shipments into the territory and the killings of hundreds of Palestinians trying to reach food. Despite the increasingly strong words, many are skeptical that Israel will yield to such pressure without more significant punitive action — and especially without the backing of Germany and the U.S., Israel’s strongest Western allies. If Israel does not change course, options could include fully or partially suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which would require a unanimous agreement by all 27 members of the EU. Other steps could be suspending an aviation agreement, blocking imports from settlements, limiting scientific and technological cooperation, and curtailing travel for Israelis in the visa-free zone known as Schengen, according to a leaked document sent by the EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, to member states. The document was seen by The Associated Press and verified by two EU diplomats.
