Guest gem Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 I love the Hawaiian flowers. They're beautiful and exotic, especially the orchids. I love orchids. I used to grow and propagate them. I like any kind of Philanopsis because not only they're beautiful, the blooms last up to 6 months. No fragrance but the colors are so captivating. John, through the pictures you posted here, I've noticed that Hawaii have more orchid varities that we can't grow here in nothern america - too cold!!! This white ones with a little touch of blue color, I don't think I've seen this before. I used to go to an orchid show and could stare at the flowers all day. Back in 1982, there was a long drought in Asia that lasted 9 months and this particular orchid, I think the name was "Dancing Lady", didn't survive. When it blooms the fragrance is "Out of this World". Since then I have not seen that species anywhere. Could be extinct. Quote

Moderators John317 Posted June 7, 2008 Author Moderators Posted June 7, 2008 Gem, thanks very much for your comment. I thought you might be interested in seeing this sign describing the Orchids of Hawaii. I am only just now beginning to learn about Orchids. I knew absolutely nothing about them when I started photographing them-- only that they seemed to me to be the most interesting and beautiful flowers I've seen. I was astonished to learn of their fantastic variety. I still do not know the names of most of those I've photographed. So I have to apologize for titling so many of my pictures as simply, "Orchid," etc. I'll make a point of looking for "Dancing Lady" you mentioned. There are many that have become extinct, and many others that came within a single flower of being completely extinct but were brought back from the brink to become very populous. So do not give up hope just yet for the "Dancing Lady," because she may still be found among the thousands of her gorgeous peers. HeheheVandas are also popular. A lot of people like to have it in their garden because of the long stem of beautiful flowers. The blooms also last long. My avatar is one of many different kinds of Philaenopsis. Quote

Moderators John317 Posted June 8, 2008 Author Moderators Posted June 8, 2008 Gem, you obviously know a lot more than I do about Orchids. Feel free to jump in any time and identify them by name if you know them. This orchid appears to have something resembling a human face, a large nose, etc. I've noticed how others-- for instance, some among the "Slipper Orchids"-- also remind me of animals. Guest gem Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Re: Golden Wild Flower #2 is called Hibiscus. The real native one in Asia can grow up to 10 feet high and the color is red. Young petals are often hand picked and soaked in water for bathing - it gives a soft and soothing feeling to the skin. Quote
